Mom Says Family Vacation Turned Into Free Babysitting Because Cousin Never Watched Her Kids

Family vacations are supposed to create memories, but they can quickly become exhausting when responsibilities are not shared.

This Redditor says she joined a large family beach trip expecting everyone to relax while still contributing to childcare, cooking, and cleanup. Instead, she felt that her cousin and her boyfriend treated the vacation like a couples getaway while everyone else helped raise their two sons.

Although she was happy to include the children, she became frustrated after repeatedly taking responsibility for them while their parents were absent. Now she is questioning whether she is being unfairly critical or whether setting boundaries for future family trips is completely reasonable.

A mother questions future family trips after relatives leave others caring for their children

'AITAH for expecting parents to actually parent on a family vacation?'

I (29F) recently went on a beach trip with my husband, our four kids, my older male cousin (42M),

his wife and their four kids, plus my other cousin (36F), her boyfriend, and her two sons.

I love planning trips, so before we left I even made an itinerary and meal ideas. Everyone wanted to do their own thing, which was totally fine..

What wasn’t fine was that we barely saw my cousin all week.

The first beach day they said they’d come with us, but never did.

Instead they stayed in their room while her boyfriend told the boys they weren’t allowed to come with us. The next day they were suddenly allowed to go.

That pretty much set the tone for the trip.

While everyone else was cooking, cleaning, taking kids to the beach, fishing, and hanging out together,

my cousin and her boyfriend were usually in their room or off by themselves.. Her boys, however, were almost always with us.

We took them to the beach, made sure they ate, included them in everything, and kept an eye on them.

I don’t mind helping family, but after a few days it felt less like helping

and more like everyone else had quietly become responsible for their kids while they enjoyed a couples vacation.

The moment that really got me was when she casually asked if I’d taken a nap. I laughed. I have four kids.

Not only was I taking care of mine, but I constantly felt like I was helping with everyone else’s too.

At one point her older son repeatedly picked on my son in the pool.

After correcting him several times, I finally stepped in and told him he’d be getting out if it continued because neither of his parents was around.

She also slept through one evening while everyone else was together,

and another night she and her boyfriend left around midnight to go to the beach while their boys stayed behind with the family..

Checkout morning pushed me over the edge.

The rest of us spent hours cleaning the Airbnb, doing laundry, packing shared items, taking out trash, and loading vehicles.

My cousin came downstairs around 8:30, packed only her own things, and never offered to help with the shared cleanup.

Her boyfriend sat outside in the sun until I finally asked if he planned on helping.. Then I noticed their SUV was spotless.

Mine was full of sand because we’d actually been hauling kids back and forth to the beach all week.

I sarcastically said it made sense they didn’t have sand in their car since they never really took the boys.

After we got home, she texted saying she had an amazing time and thanked us for spending so much time with her boys because they looked so happy in the...

Honestly… that bothered me.. Of course they had a great time. The rest of us made sure they did.

Even my older cousin later said it felt like everyone else was on a family vacation while they were on a separate couples getaway.

Now we’re talking about another family trip, but I’ve already decided every family will be responsible for their own kids.

I’m also hesitant to invite her over because I don’t want to end up supervising her boys again, especially when one repeatedly ignores adults.

I don’t necessarily think she’s a bad person, but I definitely left questioning her parenting after watching this for an entire week.

AITAH for judging her as a mom, not wanting to vacation with her again,

and not wanting to invite her over because I don’t want to end up responsible for her kids?

Many people imagine family vacations as a chance to relax, reconnect, and create memories together. But those trips can reveal something important: shared family time only works when everyone shares the responsibility that comes with it.

When some people enjoy the benefits of a group while quietly leaving others with the work, resentment can build quickly.

In this situation, the frustration was not simply that one cousin spent time away from the group. Adults on vacation are allowed to have their own space and enjoy themselves. The deeper issue was that her children became part of the group’s responsibility without a clear agreement.

While the rest of the family was cooking, cleaning, supervising activities, and caring for their own children, the cousin and her boyfriend appeared to step back while others naturally filled the gap. The mother who posted the story did not seem upset about helping family; she felt exhausted because the help became an expectation rather than a choice.

A different perspective is that some parents may underestimate how much support they are receiving in group settings. They may see relatives spending time with their children as a positive family experience rather than realizing that supervision, meals, and activities are still forms of labor.

In large family gatherings, responsibilities can become unclear, especially when everyone assumes “someone” is watching the kids. However, parents still remain responsible for making sure their children are safe, included, and properly guided.

Family therapist Dr. Susan McHale, who has researched family relationships and caregiving dynamics, explains that healthy family systems depend on clear roles and balanced participation rather than one person consistently carrying more responsibility than others.

When expectations are unclear, resentment can grow because people feel their contributions are unnoticed or taken for granted.

Similarly, psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner has written extensively about boundaries in relationships, emphasizing that saying no to unfair expectations is often necessary to maintain healthier connections.

These ideas help explain why the mother’s reaction is understandable. Setting a boundary for future trips does not mean she dislikes her cousin or her children. It means she recognized a pattern that left her feeling overwhelmed. A family vacation should allow adults to enjoy themselves while still remaining accountable for the children they brought.

At the same time, the most productive solution may not be cutting someone off completely but creating clearer expectations before the next trip. Each parent should know they are responsible for meals, behavior, transportation, and supervision unless someone specifically volunteers to help.

The bigger lesson is that family support works best when it is offered freely, not quietly assigned. Helping relatives can be meaningful, but it should not require one person to sacrifice their own rest and enjoyment every time everyone gathers.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters advised OP not to invite the cousin again because she may repeat the same behavior

beepbeepboop74656 − NTA day 2 I would have told kids they need to find a parent to take them to the beach.

Not my kids not my problem. I would have called her out on her selfishness loudly and in front of everyone.

Teamtunafish − Do NOT invite them. They consider you suckered now.

briomio − You have now set this as a pattern so if you invite them don't be surprised when she once again delegates her parenting to you.

witchymoon69 − Just don't invite her . If she asks tell her how horrible she was the last trip and you're not her free babysitter on a FAMILY vacation!

These Redditors believed the cousin should have been confronted for leaving others to handle her parenting duties

Pedal2Medal2 − NTA. , but that s__t would go on for less then an hour if anyone in our family did that & then they’d be told.

AkkmanB − YTA. To yourself. Why did you not confront them one the first day? Why allow yourself to be abused?

Do not ever vacation with your cousin again.

Do not put yourself in a position she can take advantage of again. Learn the lesson and act accordingly with her.

iluvcats17 − NTA they will do the same thing next year. Don’t invite them again. If you do, don’t complain since now you know what you are signing up for.

This group suggested discussing the issue directly and reconsidering large group vacations

Purple-Impression-23 − NTA. Are you guys close?

If so, talk to her one one one about what you observed and how it made you feel then give her space to explain.

I don't blame you at all for not wanting to, or being hesitant to, invite her on the next trip. I wouldnt make a decision on that until you talk...

tropicsandcaffeine − Why go with anyone other than immediate family? I never understood the whole "lets bring everyone" on a trip.

Way too many people for anyone to have a good time.

Important_Count8954 − NTA but do not invite them again and if they ask why they aren’t invited TELL THEM exactly why. “

I and everyone else do not feel like being responsible for your children all week as we have our own kids to watch.

We also don’t want to be the only ones cleaning up as you did t help with that either so we all think it’s best if you sit this one...

Should the cousin be given another chance with clearer rules, or was this vacation enough proof that future trips should stay separate? How would you handle a relative who expects everyone else to step in? Share your thoughts below!
