His Roommate Expected Him to Leave His Own Apartment for 10 Days. When He Refused, She Sent Him the Bill

by CTV4
July 22, 2026
in Social Issues

Sharing an apartment requires compromise.

Most roommates understand that living together means balancing different schedules, habits, relationships, and expectations.

Sometimes that involves giving each other space. Other times, it means accepting that the apartment belongs to both people equally.

One man found himself at the center of an increasingly bizarre conflict after his longtime roommate’s long-distance boyfriend came to visit.

At first, he thought everything was straightforward. She wanted her boyfriend to stay at the apartment for ten days. He had no objection.

Then she began repeatedly asking whether he planned to leave town during the visit.

When he explained that he couldn’t afford to take an unplanned vacation and needed to work, she seemed to accept the answer.

Until she didn’t.

What started as a simple question eventually escalated into demands for money, accusations of selfishness, and an argument that left him wondering whether he’d somehow missed an unwritten rule of roommate etiquette.

Here’s how it all unraveled:

His Roommate Expected Him to Leave His Own Apartment for 10 Days. When He Refused, She Sent Him the Bill
Not the actual photo

'AITAH for refusing to leave my apartment while my roommate has a guest?'

First, some context – I (36M) have been living with my roommate (32F) for 4 years.

We share an apartment because the cost of living in my city is high, and besides, it just worked for us until now.

Our apartment has three rooms – I occupy the largest bedroom, and she has the small bedroom plus the living room

(which I also have access to but don't use – it only holds her stuff and she decorates it however she wants).

We arranged the split this way because I work from home and needed a room big enough to set up an office as well.

I'm also a homebody, so I really value my own space and spend a lot of time in it ,

I only leave the house for grocery shopping, dates, and jogging.

She, on the other hand, spends most of her time out, she works in the city for 10-12 hours

each day and is very outgoing; she doesn't like staying in and often goes out with friends.

I am in a relationship with my girlfriend (33F), who visits me regularly, about twice a week, and sometimes stays the night.

We plan to move in together once our life situations stabilize a bit

(I don't want to get into details here, as they are irrelevant to this post).

My roommate was single for most of the time we lived together, but a year ago she met a man (34M)

from another country online, and they are in a long distance relationship.

During this time, they have seen each other in person once, when she visited him in his country.

Recently, a conflict arose between us because her boyfriend decided to visit her for 10 days and,

by default, stay at our apartment. I didn't mind this. However, as the arrival date approached,

my roommate started asking if I was planning a vacation or a trip during the time her partner would be visiting,

which was in July. I answered truthfully that I had been on vacation in June and had trips planned for August

and September, so I wasn't planning on leaving the house in July.

Especially since my work is freelance/contract-based, and when I'm not working, I simply don't earn money,

for this reason, spontaneous trips are out of the question for me.

I have to plan everything in advance to manage my finances well

My roommate acknowledged this and didn't bring up the topic again. Until recently.

A few days before his arrival, she asked again if I was planning a vacation while her boyfriend gonna be here.

I answered again, though a bit annoyed, that I wasn't – I had already told her before that

I couldn't afford a spontaneous trip and needed to work more this month.

She didn't comment on it and walked away. The next day, however, she started the conversation again.

She told me that because of me, she had to rent an Airbnb for 10 days to stay there with her boyfriend,

and she believes I should pay her for it because it was because of me – since I refused to leave the apartment.

She told me that she was "forced" to do so, and it is a significant burden on her budget.

I told her she must be joking and can forget about it. I also mentioned that she didn't have to do anything,

as I had no problem with her boyfriend staying with us during his visit.

She replied that they needed privacy and my presence at home was unwanted, so she had no other choice.

When I told her I wouldn't pay for her choices, she changed her tactics.

She said that since my girlfriend visits regularly, she should contribute to the rent because it's as if she lives with us.

I told her that was out of the question too, and that my partner only stays over a few days a month, she is a guest,

not a resident. This angered her again, and my roommate claimed that she was suffering financial losses because of me. Finally, she brought up another argument in the heat of...

She said that since I have a larger room, I should pay more (even though during the initial renting and

every annual lease renewal, she was always fine with a 50/50 split, especially since

we also agreed she could treat the living room as her second room).

I told her that if she felt that way, she should have said so at the time of renewal (in February),

then we could have renegotiated the rates. However, I stated that as long as the old agreement with an equal rent

split is in place, I have no intention of paying her anything extra,

especially since she had absolutely no problem with it for so many years.

Seeing that none of her attempts to stick me with the bill for her meeting with her boyfriend worked,

she said she thought "we were friends" and that it wouldn't be a problem for me to do her a "small" favor.

She said she was wrong about me and that I turned out to be a classless person.

My partner and all my friends I've vented to about this situation say I have every right to live in the apartment

I pay for and that my roommate is completely overreacting. Still,

I'm looking for validation from people who have no personal connection to me. AITAH?

A Reasonable Visit Became an Unreasonable Expectation

The 36-year-old man explained that he and his 32-year-old roommate had successfully shared an apartment for four years.

The arrangement worked well. He worked from home as a freelancer and spent most of his time indoors. She worked long hours outside the home and maintained a busy social life.

Their apartment consisted of three rooms. He occupied the larger bedroom because it doubled as his office, while she used the smaller bedroom and effectively treated the living room as her personal space.

They had agreed to split the rent evenly from the beginning and renewed the arrangement every year without issue.

For years, neither considered the setup unfair.

The conflict began when her boyfriend, who lived in another country, planned a ten-day visit.

The roommate started asking whether he intended to travel during that period.

He explained multiple times that he had already taken a vacation the previous month and had future trips scheduled later in the year.

As a freelancer, taking ten unexpected days off wasn’t simply inconvenient. It directly affected his income.

The answer seemed clear.

He wasn’t going anywhere.

Yet the question kept returning.

Only later did he discover why.

The Surprise Airbnb Invoice

Shortly before the boyfriend’s arrival, the roommate revealed her actual concern.

She and her boyfriend wanted privacy.

More specifically, they didn’t want him present in the apartment at all.

Since he refused to leave voluntarily, she claimed she had been forced to rent an Airbnb for the duration of the visit.

Then came the shocking part.

She expected him to pay for it.

According to her reasoning, the expense existed because he wouldn’t leave the apartment he legally rented and paid for.

The man was stunned.

He reminded her that he never objected to the boyfriend staying there. She had chosen the Airbnb herself.

But rather than backing down, she doubled down.

She insisted that because his presence made privacy impossible, he was responsible for the financial consequences.

When that argument failed, she switched tactics.

Suddenly his girlfriend became the issue.

His roommate claimed that because his girlfriend visited regularly and occasionally stayed overnight, she should be contributing to rent as though she lived there.

When that argument also failed, she moved on to another grievance.

Now the problem was the larger bedroom.

Despite agreeing to the rent split for four years and renewing the lease only months earlier, she argued that he should have been paying more all along.

To him, the timing seemed impossible to ignore.

None of these issues had existed before the Airbnb dispute.

When Friendship Becomes Leverage

Perhaps the most revealing moment came near the end of their argument.

After her financial arguments failed, the roommate appealed to friendship.

She said she thought they were friends and that doing her this “small favor” shouldn’t have been a problem.

For the man, that framing felt deeply unfair.

A favor is something requested.

This wasn’t a request.

It was an expectation.

And not a small one.

She wasn’t asking him to spend a weekend elsewhere.

She wanted him to leave his home for ten days, lose work opportunities, rearrange his schedule, and potentially spend money he didn’t have so she could enjoy private time with a boyfriend she had only met in person once before.

Many readers felt that distinction mattered.

A favor offered voluntarily is generosity.

A favor demanded becomes something else entirely.

Expert Insight: Why Clear Boundaries Matter in Shared Living Arrangements

According to psychologist Dr. Henry Cloud, healthy boundaries help define where one person’s responsibilities end and another’s begin.

Problems often emerge when individuals attempt to shift the consequences of their own choices onto someone else, especially in close relationships where social pressure can blur those boundaries.

Psychology Today – The Importance of Healthy Boundaries

Shared housing arrangements rely heavily on this principle. Each tenant has equal rights to occupy the home they pay for, regardless of whether another resident would prefer temporary privacy.

This is what made the roommate’s argument difficult for many readers to accept. She wasn’t dealing with an emergency or an unavoidable circumstance. She simply preferred a different living arrangement during her boyfriend’s visit.

Rather than adjusting her plans around existing realities, she attempted to make someone else responsible for solving the problem.

When personal preferences become obligations for other people, conflict is almost inevitable.

Reflection & The Bigger Picture

One reason this story attracted so much attention is that it highlights a common misunderstanding about compromise.

Compromise requires participation from both sides.

The roommate seemed to view compromise as him leaving.

There was no discussion about alternatives, no negotiation about timing, and no effort to schedule the visit during one of his already-planned trips.

Instead, she treated his refusal as an offense.

Ironically, that approach likely made cooperation less likely than it would have been if she had simply asked honestly from the beginning.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

Most commenters sided strongly with the man. Many pointed out that the apartment belonged to him just as much as it belonged to his roommate, making her expectation unreasonable from the start.

nw826 − NTA. Does her bf know she has a male roomie? Sounds like she’s trying to hide you from him.

MissBandersnatch2U − NTA. Her boyfriend can chip in for the Airbnb if she insists on getting one. The only person making her get one is her

bythebrook88 − NTA. She isn't expected to leave the apartment when your girlfriend visits,

so why should you leave when she's hosting? I wonder if she hasn't told her boyfriend that

she lives with a male roommate, and somehow thought you leaving for 10 days was better than

being honest about her living arrangements? Either way, it's her problem to solve.

Others questioned why the boyfriend wasn’t contributing to the Airbnb costs if privacy was so important.

PrideCompetitive8758 − nta, that relationship makes her toxic, in your place I would look for another accommodation soon.

ottbud − She is in a long distance relationship with a dude in another country that she met online and

has only met in person once over the course of a year. I'd put down a $1000 that

even if you left the apartment, that they'll be broken up within those 10 days.

If she wants "privacy" because her online boyfriend is uncomfortable with you, then why isn't HE paying for the Airbnb?

Why is she paying the full cost and coming at you for it and not her internet boyfriend?

LauraLethal − NTA-your roommate sounds like an entitled fruit loop.

Several readers also noted the suspicious timing of her complaints about rent, room size, and overnight guests, observing that none of those concerns existed until money became involved.taewongun1895 − If she expected you out of the apartment during his visit, she should have included you in the planning.

You will be on vacation in August, so his visit could have been planned for then. NTA. Her lack of proper planning is not your problem.

Kind_of_Bear − Let me clarify a few points that kept coming up in the comments.

The post received so much attention that I am unable to reply to everyone. Also, thank you for the words of support.

That means a lot. Does her boyfriend know about me?

Yes. I was present during one of their FaceTime calls and was introduced to him.

However, I do not know what she told him about me or how I was introduced. He likely knows I am not gay,

but I cannot say for sure. Why is she covering the costs instead of her boyfriend?

Because from what I know, her boyfriend is unemployed or facing financial difficulties.

She has occasionally expressed frustration about this to me in the past.

Besides, he might actually be contributing - don't know for sure.

She simply used the argument that these were "her costs" during our discussion.

Timeline update: It is worth noting that their meeting has already taken place.

I am writing this after her boyfriend returned to Turkey and they spent time together.

Currently, my roommate is back in our apartment and giving me the silent treatment.

*Why didn't I stay at my girlfriend's place? *

Because my roommate was not satisfied with me leaving for just a night or two.

I suggested this at the beginning of our conversation, but she wanted me gone longer.

I refused, and once it turned into an argument, I decided not to leave even for a single night.

*Am I the a__hole for splitting rent 50/50 while having the bigger bedroom? *

The truth is, this was never an issue before. We have lived together for 4 years and renew the lease annually.

She could have brought this up during a calm discussion, and I likely would have agreed to changes.

For instance, I already pay for the high-speed internet just myself because I use it the most, working at home.

However, she only brought up the room size now because of the situation with her boyfriend.

She had never said a single word about it before.

I understand that some people might view this split as unfair

(despite the other concessions I made because of it, which I described in the main post),

but I believe such things should be renegotiated at the right time. Like when signing the lease.

Not changed halfway through the contract because of an argument.

Why did I need validation if the situation seems so obvious?

*I am on the autism spectrum. This sometimes causes difficulties in social interactions and reading emotions.

I strongly feel that I handled things correctly, but the situation was still weighing on me. That's why I made that post.

Hannah_Schwanbeck − NTA If she wanted a favour she should have asked for one instead of demanding it

and pretending as if it is you that owes it to her. She could have just ecplaoned the situation an tried to find a compromise.

Now she just made you mad with baseless demands and you probably don't want to do any favors anymore.

To give her some grace: I can imagine, that she wanted to ask you to leave and

had an inner conflict because she knows deep down that this is unreasonable.

To get what she wants (you out of the Apartment) and also not go against her own view (you can't just throw a roommate out)

she has to delude herself, that this is a special case in which you can indeed expect the roommate to move out for a while.

VinVenture87 − It’s hilarious to me that she thinks even though you can’t afford a vacation for yourself,

that you would be willing to pay for hers. What a dumbass. NTAAAAA stand firm!

Living with roommates requires flexibility, patience, and occasional sacrifices.

But it does not require vacating your own home because someone else’s romantic plans would be more convenient that way.

The roommate had every right to want privacy.

She did not have the right to demand it at someone else’s expense.

In the end, the dispute wasn’t really about an Airbnb or a boyfriend’s visit. It was about entitlement, expectations, and whether friendship can be used as leverage when logic fails.

Do you think refusing to leave was unreasonable, or was the roommate asking for far more than any tenant should ever expect?
