Girlfriend Survived a Terrible Accident, But Her Boyfriend Became the Person She Resented Most

in Social Issues

A life she had worked hard to build suddenly changed in a matter of seconds.

After a serious car accident caused by her boyfriend’s mistake, she was left with a shattered wrist and a long, uncertain recovery ahead.

While he walked away with only minor injuries, she lost the independence she had taken pride in, the ability to write, drive, work, and complete simple daily tasks without help.

Just months after landing her dream job, she was forced to step away and take indefinite medical leave.

The hardest part wasn’t only the physical pain, but the feeling that everything she had built could disappear while she waited to heal.

Although her boyfriend has been caring for her every day, his presence has become a painful reminder of what happened. Instead of feeling grateful, she finds herself filled with anger, resentment, and even moments of satisfaction when he struggles too.

Now she is facing a battle beyond her injury: trying to understand the darker emotions that came after the accident and wondering whether she can find her way back to the person she used to be.

'I hate my boyfriend for our accident to the point I don't recognise myself?'

Long story short, my boyfriend did a very stupid thing while driving that

landed both of us in a pretty gnarly accident. He ended up with a few

scratches, but I got it worse. The worst thing is my shattered wrist. My

finegrs are working pretty fine, but, for now, I have almost zero strenght in

my right hand.

I just finished school not long ago and got my dream job that I've worked in

for just a few months before having to take indefinite medical leave. I'll

obviously recover one day, but nobody is able to tell me when exactly that

will be which drives me crazy because it feels like it'll somehow slip away

from me in that time.

Everything is so much more difficult for me. I can't do anything with my

right hand. Can't write, drive, use utensils or even tie my own shoelaces. It's

all just so humiliating and exhausting.

I was in a pretty good spot before all that, more or less satisfied with my

life. Now all I feel is anger and resentment, especially towards my

boyfriend. Whenever I see him, I want to scoff. He's helping me every day,

but honestly it makes it because I remember ever day that I wouldn't even

need this much help if it wasn't for him.

Few days ago, he had a panic attack at work and I didn't feel sorry for him.

Honestly? I felt satisfied that finally something got him too, that he got

some consequences too.

All those hateful and angry thoughts make me hate myself too because

that's truly not the kind of person I want to be. But somehow they

simultaneously bring me a sick sense of peace. I'm afraid that this is just

who I am now and I'm not sure if there's a way out of this hole.

Few experiences change a person’s emotional world as suddenly as a serious accident.

In an instant, someone can go from feeling independent and optimistic about the future to relying on others for even the simplest daily tasks.

When that loss is caused by another person’s mistake, especially someone they love, it is common for gratitude, grief, anger, and guilt to exist side by side.

In this situation, OP was not only recovering from painful physical injuries but also grieving the temporary loss of her independence, career momentum, and confidence.

The uncertainty surrounding her recovery likely made everything feel even heavier.

She had recently achieved a dream job, only to be forced onto indefinite medical leave with no clear timeline for returning.

Every time her boyfriend helped her eat, dress, or complete simple tasks, she was reminded that the accident, and many of these struggles, would not have happened without his decision behind the wheel.

It is understandable that those reminders became tied to resentment rather than comfort.

Many people are uncomfortable admitting emotions like the ones OP described, but they are more common than they might seem.

Feeling a sense of satisfaction when the person responsible experiences consequences does not necessarily mean someone is cruel.

More often, it reflects a deep desire for balance after feeling that life has become unfair.

The injured person may feel trapped in constant physical and emotional pain while watching the other person recover relatively quickly.

Seeing them struggle, even briefly, can create the feeling that the burden is no longer being carried alone.

Those emotions may be unpleasant, but having them is not the same as acting on them.

This perspective helps explain why OP feels caught between hatred and guilt.

The resentment is likely directed less at who her boyfriend is than at what his actions cost her: her independence, her routine, her career, and her confidence.

At the same time, she can recognize that he is trying to help and may genuinely regret what happened.

Both realities can be true simultaneously. Love and resentment are not mutually exclusive after trauma.

The most encouraging part of OP’s story is that she recognizes these thoughts do not reflect the person she wants to become.

That awareness suggests she has not lost her empathy, she is overwhelmed by grief that has not yet had the chance to heal.

As her physical recovery progresses, it may also be helpful to seek psychological support, particularly from someone experienced in trauma or rehabilitation, because recovering emotionally often takes as much work as recovering physically.

The accident changed OP’s life, but it does not have to define who she becomes.

Anger is a natural response to losing so much so suddenly.

Over time, with healing, support, and space to grieve what was taken from her, those feelings can soften without requiring her to pretend the pain never existed.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

Most commenters recommended therapy to help process the trauma, resentment, and uncertainty about the relationship

lilsproutmel − Therapy for both of you

Plantagirl − You really should address your resentment if you want to save

your relationship. The only one who can do work on that end is you, but

you really need to sit down with a therapist and figure out all parts of your

resentment.

Then once you have, I think couples therapy would be good so you can

address these parts in a safe environment for you and him. Neither one of

you deserve to be in a relationship, where you are not expressing yourselves.

Weary_Environment837 − Did he apologise or make any effort to

understand the impact his actions have caused you? I honestly believe you

should not be in this relationship because of the way you feel, this type of

resent will fester and grow deeper if not resolved by therapy (couple and individual)

Juliminnie − I was in the same situation as you. Three years ago I was in a

motorcycle crash with my ex boyfriend because instead of being in the

correct lane, he decided to use the middle of the road and not use the

correct protective motorcycle gear.

I still don't understand how it happened but I remember falling from the

motorcycle, hitting my head (Fortunately the helmet absorbed the impact)

and ended up standing in the middle of the road. By some miracle I wasn't

hit by the truck that was behind us.

He got a few scratches while I had to get reconstructive surgery on my left

hand that left me with around 60% of mobility and almost no strength in

my grip to this day.

It's difficult to even stretch my fingers or to pet my dog, and my index

finger is useless and I had to get used to use my middle finger for typing or other stuff.

It took me months of physical therapy to even get to hold something and

at the time I hated my ex, because he got nothing substantial, he didn't get

hurt enough in my perspective. He got emotional consequences of course,

he had a lot of panic attacks regarding my safety that gave me some sort of satisfaction.

But I fortunately had a therapist on my side to work through these feelings.

He didn't have a therapist and he redirected all those feelings towards me

and became abusive. It took me one more year to finally break up with him.

Please, if you can, get a therapist specialized in these sorts of accidents.

I'm not saying that if you don't you will become abusive, but you're already

experiencing hurtful feelings towards yourself. Don't feel bad about what

you feel, resentment is normal and will happen in these kinds of situations.

The important thing is to seek help, not because you're resenting him, but

because you're hurting yourself.

These commenters reassured OP that anger, resentment, and conflicting emotions are common after a traumatic accident

JollyHelmet466 − the panic attack satisfaction thing is just your brain

keeping score after surviving something traumatic, not a character flaw

beesfly − Whether you stay with him or not, therapy would be helpful in

helping you move past the resentment. The way you’re feeling is

understandable, but you don’t deserve to feel bad mentally while trying to recover

NoriPotatoChip − First off, I think admitting you’re feeling this is a great

first step. Shoving those feelings down won’t help you heal physically or

emotionally. Second: trauma is a motherf\*cker. You both went through a

traumatic incident and you came out with the lion’s share of physical

consequences. It’s completely understandable that you’d be angry.

You might even have PTSD or depression/anxiety that manifests primarily

in anger. These symptoms are in no way uncommon for car accident

victims, chronic pain sufferers etc. and your emotions are not your fault.

But if you want to stay in the relationship (and even if you don’t and want

to move on healthily) you need to tackle the anger and resentment.

Therapy for you, therapy for you both—you should learn to navigate life

after the accident now or that wound is gonna fester even if/when he’s out of the picture

Several commenters shared their own experiences with serious accidents or reckless partners to relate to OP

sollinatri − I can't comment on the resentment part, but as someone who

recently had orthopedic surgery, hang in there. I went through a phase of

pitying myself and feeling guilty for not recovering fast enough, it happens.

It is unfortunate, it feels like the progress is very slow, former daily tasks

feel impossible and people sometimes just focus on helping with the

physical side, they forget the mental aspect. You're not alone.

How_Many_Bothans − Not trying to take anything away from your awful

experience and fully valid feelings, but just because you say you're unhappy

with these emotions and don't recognize yourself: is there any chance you

had an unrecognized/untreated head injury as well? I've heard they can

cause big personality changes, mood swings, anger, etc. Relatedly, consider

looking into PTSD treatment if you haven't already.

crimsonphoto666 − First off I will have to agree that it may be helpful to

talk to a therapist about all of this and secondly I'm very happy you're okay

because that could have been so much worse for both of you.

I am also at a similar situation as about 2 days ago my partner decided it

would just be a really good idea to run a red light get pulled over they

approached my side of the car rather than his side which I don't understand

why but it is what it is so he decided to be stupid and get out of the car and

there was a lot of screaming calling for backup and a spotlight pointed at

him the whole time and I'm sitting there in the passenger seat just telling

him over and over just to stop just stop while he was grumbling cuz he was

angry over something he chose to do and was getting the consequences of

his own f__king actions and I haven't felt the same way about him since and

I can't shake this resentment that I have either.

I'm unsure if it's because he kind of ruined the entire night and

subsequently the rest of my life since then although it's only been two days

so I'm hoping I kind of blow off some steam in between now and then and

maybe the feelings go away or if it's the fact that he could have avoided all

of that had he not well obviously ran the red light but more importantly if

he just stayed in the f__king car and passed me his s__t to pass to the

officers well officer they wouldn't have had the f__king pull weapons or

call for backup if it weren't for his stupidity.

I think I'm angry because it was avoidable and his reactions could have

gotten him killed and I don't think he realizes that he could have gotten me

killed too and I was genuinely justified bystander because I was just a

passenger in the car.

All of us to say I understand where you're coming from from a different

perspective for a similar situation and I think I will be trying to work this out

with somebody if I can afford it and it doesn't go away.

So again I do recommend maybe reaching out to a therapist unpack and

get down to maybe a point where everything was a little bit easier to

digest perhaps. It's also I apologize I am not proofreading this I am sick and

I'm using talk to text so hopefully all this makes sense! Best of luck in your recovery ❤️

The accident didn’t just leave the OP with physical injuries, it also shattered the sense of independence and future they had worked so hard to build.

While their resentment toward their boyfriend may be difficult to admit, many readers felt it was an understandable reaction to a life-changing event caused by someone else’s mistake.

The real challenge will be whether that anger fades as healing begins or permanently changes the relationship.

What do you think? Could you forgive a partner whose reckless decision changed your life, or would the resentment eventually become too much to overcome? Share your thoughts below!
