Dying Woman Books A Family Holiday, But Her In-Laws Accuse Her Of Being Irresponsible

A woman facing terminal illness is defending her choice to make memories with her children while she still has the chance.

This Redditor explains that she was diagnosed with incurable cancer but has responded well to treatment so far. Knowing her current health may not last forever, she has been taking affordable trips with her own savings and recently booked a last-minute family beach holiday.

Her in-laws reacted angrily, accusing her of being irresponsible with money and suggesting she should save everything for her children instead. She feels hurt that they are focusing on a future inheritance instead of understanding that she wants to create meaningful memories with her kids while she is still able to travel.

'MIL and FIL lose it because I booked a holiday- while I still can'

So I was diagnosed with incurable cancer about a year ago.

I have responded well to treatment, so have been going on quite a few cheapo trips this year with my own savings.

At some point this treatment will stop working, usually within 2 years, then it will be on to something else, maybe chemo.

Although my husband was made redundant and we are living fairly frugally on disability and welfare,

we have life insurance which will pay out near the end of my life, and I will be able to take a pension lump sum which will be arriving in...

So finances are complicated but not desperate. Get critical illness cover NOW, people.

I have been wanting to take my kids on a pool-and-beach holiday, and keeping an eye on last minute deals.

The in laws have been dead against this, wondering aloud why anybody would ever want to leave their home ever.

Well when they found out I hadn't done as they wished, and spent £1000 on a (bargain) holiday next week using an interest free

credit card they hit the roof, bellowing at me that they will end up having to pay,

(not true, I have never asked them for money and I have a reasonable lump sum coming.)

FIL stormed out and MIL chose to follow me around asking inane questions, as if I hadn't considered our situation carefully.

She also asked "Shouldnt you be saving your money for the children?" The more I think about that the worse it is.

The kids will be getting money down the line, but no I shouldnt try to enjoy the rest of my life with them

but instead lie around the house until I die saving every penny so they have a bit more in the bank. The f__king cheek of it.

Sure, if I wasnt ill I would never buy a holiday on credit when we arent working. We've never not been working before or claimed any benefits.

But this could very well be the last Summer in my life that I can travel abroad!

I am sure I won't regret this relatively small expenditure, and we always bond on our holidays. I am generally very frugal and sensible with money.

Anyway, she sends a text to my husband the next day- and the a__ault on my character is haw dropping. Bear in mind, she is a klepto shopaholic.

She described how "OP's glee in their new credit card is genuinely terrifying!" (I wasnt gleefull, I just explained that this was how I paid.)

She said I have a "Frantic need to spend money."

Now you dont know me, but hell I veer on the side of stingy, the projection from this shopaholic is gobsmacking.

She said that FIL is "incandescent with disgust!" Soooo over the top and offensive.

Oh yes she also asks if I'm having counselling and spends a paragraph intimating that I've basically gone mad and asking if he needs help.

We have since made arrangements over the phone for them to see the kids on Monday, they pull s__t like this every

so often so we will be very much ignoring their dramatics and grey rocking.

I've got serious cancer ffs and want to spend some of my own money on a family holiday.. Thanks for the vent.

Few moments force people to reconsider what truly matters more than facing the possibility that time may be limited. A serious illness can change the way someone views money, experiences, and memories. For many people, the question is no longer only “Can I afford this?” but also “Will I have another chance to do this?”

In this situation, the original poster was not making a careless financial decision simply because she booked a holiday. She was making a decision while living with uncertainty about her future. After receiving an incurable cancer diagnosis, she began prioritizing meaningful experiences with her children while she still had the health and opportunity to create those memories.

Her in-laws focused on the financial risk, but OP was looking at a different kind of value: time spent together that cannot be replaced. Their disagreement was not really about a £1,000 holiday. It was about two completely different ideas of what responsible living looks like during a life-limiting illness.

Some people may understand the in-laws’ concern because financial security matters, especially when children are involved. However, another perspective is that fear can sometimes make people focus so heavily on protecting the future that they forget the present is also part of a child’s life.

OP’s in-laws may believe they are being practical, but their comments appear to dismiss the emotional reality of someone who does not know how many healthy summers remain. Meanwhile, OP seems to have carefully considered her circumstances rather than acting impulsively, especially since she describes a history of being financially cautious.

Psychologist and grief researcher Dr. David Kessler explains that when people face serious illness or loss, they often experience a shift in priorities and begin searching for meaning, connection, and moments that feel significant. He describes the importance of allowing people to create meaningful experiences rather than judging their choices only through fear or practicality.

The American Cancer Society also recognizes that maintaining quality of life, emotional wellbeing, and meaningful activities can be important parts of coping with cancer.

This perspective helps explain why the holiday represents much more than spending money. For OP, it is an investment in family memories during a period when the future feels uncertain. That does not mean finances should be ignored, but it does mean financial decisions should be evaluated within the full context of someone’s life.

A person dealing with terminal or incurable illness may reasonably place a different value on experiences than someone planning decades ahead.

The most constructive approach would be for the family to separate concern from control. The in-laws can care about their grandchildren’s future without criticizing OP’s choices or assuming she is acting irrationally.

OP can continue making thoughtful decisions while accepting that others may struggle with her situation. When time becomes uncertain, there is no perfect balance between saving and living. Sometimes the memories created today become part of the legacy people leave behind.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters encouraged OP to prioritize family memories and spend meaningful time with loved ones

sharonH888 − I have a relative that had incurable cancer. He didn’t take the trip. And he felt so badly so quickly, that he couldn’t.

And now he’s gone. Go. You’re making memories that will be remembered forever. After you’ve left the physical plane.

Do it. But stop telling your in-laws anything. It’s none of their business and they don’t have a say. They are truly horrible people.

rnpink123 − Good for you! Life is meant to be lived while you can. We all have an expiration date, you just happen to know that yours will be coming...

Please do not let her make you feel guilty. Give your kids all the good memories that you can.

W1ldth1ng − I am sorry for your situation and admire your courage.

Your kids will appreciate the memories more than the money, take so many photos and make those memories with them.

Fight with all you have to be with them for as long as you can. Tell your husband to get his parents in check.

Block them on your phone and tell them all communication needs to go through their son.

You do not need their negativity in your life. Re your kids Make journals for them.

Not knowing their ages think about what will happen in their lives and speak to them in the journals about what will happen in their future.

My friend was given one of these journals after her father died (cancer) he offered advice

and wisdom for key future events guidance for navigating some of the curve balls life throws at you.

How you felt when they were born/ you found out you were pregnant etc, the events in their lives and how you feel about them.

Give them to someone to keep safe for them. She treasures hers and feels it is her father still speaking to her and offering her help as she grew up.

These Redditors supported canceling visits and distancing from relatives causing additional stress

no12chere − I would cancel. The monday visit. Enjoy the holiday. Make all the best memories as for those kids.

Every special moment is something they can look back on with joy

CADreamn − Why are you letting them see the kids? You know they are going to bad-mouth you to your own kids.

They should be cut off for the comments they made about you.

G3N3RICxUS3RNAM3 − Please never see them again. Like just cut them off cold turkey. If you only have a few years left why waste any more with them

This group criticized the in-laws’ behavior and suggested cutting off contact

Regular-Message9591 − What in the ever loving f__k 😂😂

First of all, I am so sorry about your diagnosis and the fact that you are dealing with such self involved AHs on top of it.

Obviously you're aware that your choices, family and finances are none of their goddammit business, but I'd be cutting them off after this horseshit.

I'm so mad for you! !!

londonscottish79 − Why are you even speaking to them? Literally, block them on your phone and do not visit them or allow them to your home.

These commenters believed the relatives’ actions deserved consequences rather than continued access to OP and the children

LouieAvalonMac − I’m so sorry They need a hard consequence - not an organised visit with the grandkids.

That’s a reward You take the visits away to give a consequence

Katya_ − Your husband should be putting her in her place and getting her the f out while you are sick. Feck her seeing the grandkids.

You absolutely have every right to make memories with your kids before you get too sick to do anything.

I would block them everywhere and your husband should be banning them from the house til they can be decent people.

Should loved ones prioritize protecting someone’s finances, or support their choices when time is limited? Share your thoughts below!
