in Social Issues

Sometimes, the hardest feelings to admit are the ones directed toward the people we love most.

When someone’s mistake changes an entire family’s future, resentment can appear alongside love, guilt, and grief.

The original poster (OP) never expected her life to completely change because of one devastating accident.

After her sister suffered a life-altering injury, OP had to leave behind her own plans to become a caregiver and help raise her nephews.

While she still cares for her sister every day, the emotional weight of the situation has left her carrying anger and thoughts she feels ashamed to admit.

OP knows her sister is also suffering, but she cannot ignore the pain her choices caused everyone around her.

Scroll down to read the heartbreaking confession that left many people sharing their own experiences with caregiving and resentment.

'I hate my brain damaged sister.?'

I can't believe I am actually typing this out right now, it's making it feel very

real. And before you say it, I know, I know. I am probably one of the worst

human beings on this planet.

Around a year ago, my older sister (27), widowed mother of 2 boys (8) and

(5) decided to, against every single warning made, get drunk as s__t and

wreck her car into a rock embankment outside of our town. She was life

flighted to a ICU, spent weeks in a coma and awoke in vegetative state. In

the past year, she has SLOWLY began to see some progress.

Because of this accident, I was forced to quit my job, leave my friends, move

across the country and back in with my parents, to help take care of her and

raise my nephews. I love them dearly, but I have never wanted to have kids,

especially not forced upon me like this.

She had the mind of a child now, argues about silly things, can't cook for

herself, cries over everything, can't read, memory loss, partially paralyzed

on her right side, has aphasia, and a LIST of other problems with me as her

caregiver. She tell me how happy she is to be alive after such a bad car

accident. I want to scream that I wish she would have died. Her boys are a

wreck after losing their dad recently and now having a fucked up mom. My

parents are spending all of their retirement savings for her treatments. I

can see the years getting shaved off my dad and mom from the stress.

I don't treat her any differently, I still tell her stories and laugh with her and

do my best, but I hate the way I feel when I look at her. Did you even think

about your boys when you got in your car? She is smiling and completely

ignorant to the pain she has caused to my entire family. So I guess that's it.

That's my confession. I have a deep dark h__red and resentment for

someone I love. And I will never let her know.

Edit: I am a female btw.. and some people have said pretty horrid and cruel

things and I totally get it. But I already feel pretty f__king s__tty about my

feelings so you can't really make me feel any worse.

Everyone else. Thank you so much for the support, advice and feedback.

I've read and appreciated every comment. Alot of the medical and

healthcare advice I will be talking to my parents about and hopefully the

financial parts of this can be helped a bit. Thanks guys, much love.

Some of the heaviest emotions a person can carry are the ones they feel ashamed to admit.

Love and resentment can exist at the same time, especially when someone’s life changes overnight because of another person’s choices.

Feeling conflicted does not automatically make someone cruel; it often reflects the impossible reality they have been forced to live.

In this situation, the OP is grieving far more than her sister’s accident. She is mourning the life she expected to have.

She gave up her career, her independence, her friendships, and the future she had been building in order to become a caregiver and help raise two grieving children.

Every day she is reminded that this new life began because of a preventable decision.

Her sister celebrates being alive because she survived, while the OP sees the lasting consequences that survival brought to everyone else.

That contrast creates intense guilt because she still loves her sister, yet part of her cannot stop wishing things had turned out differently.

A different perspective is that the OP may be experiencing what psychologists call ambiguous loss.

Her sister is physically present, but the person she once knew is largely gone.

The OP is expected to care for someone who looks familiar but has dramatically changed, while also becoming a parent figure to children she never planned to raise.

Society often praises family members who sacrifice everything, but rarely acknowledges the resentment, exhaustion, and grief that can naturally develop under that kind of pressure. Loving someone does not erase caregiver burnout.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s thoughts are so distressing.

Wishing life had been different is not the same as wishing harm on someone out of malice.

Her resentment is directed toward the devastating consequences of a single reckless decision, not toward an innocent stranger.

The fact that she continues to care for her sister with patience, despite her private feelings, suggests that her actions are guided by compassion even when her emotions are not.

The most important lesson from this story is that caregivers also deserve care.

Constant sacrifice without emotional support can leave even the most loving person feeling trapped and hopeless.

The OP cannot change what happened, but she can recognize that her own well-being matters alongside everyone else’s.

Sometimes the bravest thing a caregiver can do is admit they are hurting.

Honest acknowledgment does not make someone heartless; it is often the first step toward finding the support needed to keep going without losing themselves in the process.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters reassured OP that sacrificing their entire life for family isn’t their responsibility and encouraged putting their own well-being first

time2goreddit − Damn is right. That is hell and sucks. You are not a terrible

person you are a selfless person and have given up so much for your family.

There has to be some light for you. Is there respite care so you can get

away? A plan for when the kids are older maybe?

2Tibetans − You are not required to set yourself on fire so others can stay warm.

my_psychic_powers − We get one life, it is your’s, not her’s or their’s. There

are services available. Seriously, not your responsibility. I tell sibs this all the

time, and they all face the family pressure that you do. Get out, but not in a bad way.

This group supported OP emotionally

Ami1ucrave − I don’t want to say you’re a terrible person because you’re

not. You did a very adult thing. We do adult things everyday but it doesn’t

mean we have to pretend to love and or like it. It’s a tough task that you

took on. I applaud you for it but I can empathize with your feelings.

I hope by releasing this you find it somehow cathartic.

FlowrollMB − It is so critically important, and healthy, that you can own up

to these feelings. Most people in your position wouldn’t be able to admit to

all this, and it would impact them in evermore fucked up ways. By coming to

terms with your feelings, you are taking steps in the right direction.

DownLikeSyndrom − That’s probably one of the most honest things I’ve

ever read. I think your actions are expressions of your love and your words

are expressions of your pain, as your sister not only altered the trajectory of

her life, but she also sort of stole yours in the process.

DankNerd97 − This is an extremely difficult thing to deal with. I understand

your frustration, and it has to be an absolute pain to have to expend so

many efforts and resources on her. Her impulsive actions led to severe

consequences. I’m am sorry for your entire family, and I wish you all well.

These users suggested practical solutions

texasusa − Your sisters kids should get social security survivor benefits for

their dead father and your sister should get social security disability

payments for herself.

As far as social security for your sister, they always say no, you get a

attorney, file a appeal and the attorney gets a one time payment of 25% of

the first check which is a considerable amount since the 1st check is

calculated from the date if the original application. You can file the initial

application on line.

IndiaLeigh − Step 1: Call disability claims lawyer Step 2: Call Social Services

and about applying for extra help. With the amount of people in your

household you should qualify. Also consider calling a home healthcare

nursing facility. It might be covered once you qualify for extra help.

If you can get her to qualify for disability then she might be able to go to an

assisted living home.

The OP’s confession isn’t about a lack of love, it’s about the crushing weight of becoming an unwilling caregiver after one reckless decision changed an entire family forever.

While her sister celebrates surviving, the OP is left mourning the life she lost, the future she gave up, and the burden now carried by everyone around her.

Many readers sympathized with the impossible mix of compassion, resentment, grief, and exhaustion she described.

Do you think the OP’s feelings are an understandable response to caregiver burnout, or do they cross a moral line?

How would you cope if one person’s choices permanently changed the course of your own life? Share your thoughts below.
