She Refused to Help When Her Neighbor Feared for Her Safety. Years Later, She Needed a Favor and Came Knocking

in Social Issues

Good neighbors can make life easier.

They help carry groceries, keep an eye on packages, and occasionally step in when someone is in a difficult situation.

While nobody is obligated to help the people living next door, many of us assume that kindness and support tend to flow both ways over time.

One woman thought she had built that kind of relationship with her neighbor.

For years, she drove her grocery shopping, helped her family when transportation was needed, and generally tried to be supportive whenever she could.

Then a frightening situation changed how she viewed the relationship.

After her toxic ex-partner threatened to break into her apartment, she desperately needed a way to monitor her home and protect her dog.

She turned to the neighbor she had helped so many times before.

The response she received was one she never forgot.

Now, years later, the same neighbor is asking for help.

And she’s struggling with whether she owes her anything at all.

Here’s the original post:

Not the actual photo

'AITAH for not wanting to help my neighbor who wasn’t there for me when I needed her?'

I used to help my neighbor a lot. I drove her grocery shopping and even borrowed a different car so

I could take her mom to the hospital because my own car only has two seats.

A few years ago, after my toxic ex threatened to break into my apartment, I bought a security

camera. Since I didn’t have internet yet, I asked my neighbor if I could temporarily use her Wi-Fi so

the camera would work. I explained the situation and how scared I was.. She said she didn’t want to

get involved. We didn’t speak for the next two years.

We’ve only recently started talking again, well she started, I am just being polite. This evening, she

called because the person who was supposed to drive her and her cat to the vet tomorrow canceled

last minute. I technically could help, but it would also mean waiting with her (for 1-2 hours the cat

gets teeth surgery) and spending time together, acting like nothing happened, and I’m not that shallow of a person. I don’t really want to.

Part of me feels guilty because it was a last-minute cancellation and I know she’s in a difficult

situation. But another part of me feels used. When I really needed someone, she wasn’t there for me and we never talked about that.

I know she didn’t owe me anything, but I think I don’t owe her anything either. If I were the one

asking for help tomorrow, I genuinely don’t believe she’d do the same for me.. **AITA if I tell her I’m

not available, even though I probably could make it work?**

**EDIT: I forgot to mention that my ex threatened to break in just to k__l my dog. I’m not scared of loosing material stuff.**

**I told her I have a meeting and I’m busy, now she asked me if I can make some time next week. I

said I have to look into my calendar. A taxi to the vet and back would be around 150€ and she makes

only 1.300€ a month. She said she can’t and I told her about uber and she said she never heard of

uber. Also I am not sure if uber is available in our area**

The Moment Everything Changed

Before their falling out, the woman described herself as someone who frequently helped her neighbor.

She drove her on errands. She helped transport her mother to medical appointments. She went out of her way to make life easier for the family whenever she could.

Then her personal life took a frightening turn.

According to her, a toxic ex-partner threatened to break into her apartment specifically to harm her dog.

Wanting some peace of mind, she purchased a security camera.

The problem was that she didn’t yet have internet service installed.

She approached her neighbor with what she considered a temporary and modest request.

Could she briefly use the neighbor’s Wi-Fi connection so the camera could function until she arranged her own internet?

She explained the situation.

She explained why she was scared.

And she explained why the camera mattered.

The neighbor’s answer was short.

She didn’t want to get involved.

For the woman, that response was devastating.

This wasn’t a disagreement about lending money or taking sides in a personal dispute.

From her perspective, she was asking for help during a situation involving fear, safety, and concern for her pet.

After that interaction, the two neighbors stopped speaking.

The silence lasted roughly two years.

An Unexpected Request

Recently, communication between them resumed.

Not because they resolved their issues.

Not because they had a meaningful conversation about what happened.

According to the woman, her neighbor simply started talking to her again, and she responded politely.

Then came a phone call.

The neighbor explained that the person scheduled to drive her and her cat to a veterinary appointment had canceled at the last minute.

The cat needed dental surgery.

She needed transportation.

And now she wanted help.

Technically, helping was possible.

But it wasn’t as simple as a quick ride.

The appointment would likely require waiting for one to two hours while the procedure was completed. It would mean spending extended time together, acting as though the previous hurt never happened.

That was where the woman found herself conflicted.

She recognized that the situation was stressful.

She understood that veterinary care can be expensive and difficult to coordinate.

At the same time, she couldn’t shake the memory of being told “I don’t want to get involved” during one of the most frightening moments of her life.

Expert Insight: Why Reciprocity Matters in Relationships

According to psychologist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne, healthy relationships often develop through reciprocity, the mutual exchange of support, trust, and assistance over time.

While relationships should not function as scorecards, people naturally evaluate whether support is one-sided, especially during moments of vulnerability.

Psychology Today – The Psychology of Reciprocity in Relationships

Researchers note that trust is often built not during ordinary interactions but during moments when someone genuinely needs help.

When support is absent during those critical situations, it can permanently alter how a person views the relationship.

This perspective helps explain why the woman’s hesitation wasn’t really about transportation.

The deeper issue was emotional.

The neighbor’s refusal years earlier created a lingering sense that the relationship lacked mutual care. Now, being asked for a significant favor without ever addressing that history felt uncomfortable and unfair.

People are often more willing to help when they feel valued, respected, and supported in return.

Reflection & The Bigger Picture

One interesting aspect of this story is that the woman repeatedly acknowledged something important.

Her neighbor didn’t owe her access to the Wi-Fi.

Legally and practically, that was true.

But relationships aren’t built solely on obligations.

They’re built on choices.

The neighbor chose not to help when she felt unsafe.

Now the woman is considering making the same choice.

That doesn’t necessarily make either person wrong.

But it does highlight a reality many people recognize.

When someone repeatedly receives kindness without offering it in return, the relationship often changes.

Sometimes permanently.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

Most commenters felt the woman was under no obligation to help. Many pointed out that she had consistently supported her neighbor in the past, while the neighbor refused a relatively simple request during a situation involving personal safety and concern for a beloved pet.

brittdre16 − Tell her you don’t want to get involved. NTA

GrassRunner29 − She can take an Uber. NTA

Feeling-Invite7953 − NTA. When you were in a life-threatening situation,she wasn’t willing to help.

You owe her nothing, not even an empty emotion like guilt. Anyway, whether you’re “available “ or not is irrelevant, and none of her business.

Others noted that the renewed friendship appeared to coincide with the neighbor needing another favor, which made some readers skeptical of her intentions.

Repulsive_Tone_2484 − NTA. But be honest. "You weren't there for me when I needed your help, so

I'm not prepared to help you now" You're probably right about why she is reaching out now.

Ellen_vdAZ − You’re right. You don’t owe her anything. You’re also right that the only reason she’s

reaching out to you is because she needs something. FFS “don’t want to get involved’ by letting you

use her wifi until you get things sorted out? Scr#w her. NTA let her organize another ride or reschedule. Not your problem

Dlodancer − NTA, tell her, “no. Sorry, I don’t want to get involved”

Several commenters jokingly suggested responding with the exact phrase, “I don’t want to get involved.”

PrincessBella1 − NTA. Actions have consequences. If you do this, she will think that

you will be available to help her more. She can find a ride share.

AnonAttemptress − NTA she wouldn’t let you use her f__king wi-fi? ? She can go to hell. She’s only

friendly now because she misses the favors you did for her. She never checked in with you on the

situation with your ex? You should feel zero guilt about not helping her out.

imf4rds − Taxi's exist for a reason. She showed you who she is. Lending her wifi would of been so simple. Just say you are not available. NTA

EnvironmentalBug5525 − NTA "I don't want to get involved", let your petty flag fly.

Not every relationship survives disappointment.

Sometimes trust is damaged by a single moment when someone reveals who they are under pressure.

The neighbor may have had her own reasons for refusing help years ago. But actions leave impressions, and those impressions often shape future choices.

The woman isn’t deciding whether her neighbor deserves help.

She’s deciding whether she wants to invest time and emotional energy into a relationship that never fully recovered from a painful breach of trust.

And those are not the same thing.

Would you help someone who wasn’t there for you during one of the most frightening moments of your life, or would you consider that chapter closed?
