Couple Bans Thieving In-Laws After They Keep Taking Small Items From Their Home

A couple is questioning how to handle family members who repeatedly take things from their home without permission.

This Redditor says her sister-in-law and her husband have a habit of taking small household items whenever they visit. At first, the missing objects were minor things like candles or utensils, but the situation escalated when a complete James Bond DVD collection disappeared after a family dinner.

After repeatedly denying they had it, the couple eventually admitted they took it only after the parents-in-law confronted them. The collection was returned damaged, leaving the Redditor unsure whether she should stop allowing them into her home.

'My SIL thinks everything we own is hers'

My SIL and her husband consistently steal small or (they think) unnoticeable things from our house.

We don’t live in a big house nor are we well off, but every time they come over for family dinner (every 3 months or so), something is missing.

Usually it’s something very small, like a tea candle or small fork. Months ago, they took our DVD collection of every James Bond movie.

It was originally $90 so while not the most expensive thing, it was something we missed.

Especially since the night they took it, we told them how much we were looking forward to watching all the movies!

We confronted them and parents-in-law (PIL) a week later when we confirmed we hadn’t misplaced it.

Everyone denied it; my MIL mentioned a couple days later she saw SIL put it in her car.

We asked for it back because we wanted to watch it. They “couldn’t find it.”

We did this three separate times over the course of 6 months and they “couldn’t find it.”

PIL eventually asked SIL and husband about it and they gave it up right away.

We had recently bought it when they stole it. It came back with black footprints on the outer box and scratches on half the discs.

She’s the only SIL I have but I’d rather not have her in my house again if she and her husband will keep stealing from us.

Maybe it’ll be another tea candle, maybe it’ll be something bigger. Does anyone else have a klepto in-law they have to keep in check?

Trust is often damaged not by one dramatic betrayal, but by a pattern of small violations that slowly change how safe we feel around someone. When a person repeatedly takes things that do not belong to them, the emotional impact is rarely about the object itself.

A missing candle, fork, or DVD collection may seem insignificant to an outsider, but each incident carries the same message: “Your boundaries do not matter.”

In this situation, the original poster is not simply upset about losing household items. She is reacting to a repeated breach of trust inside her own home. The most troubling part is not only that the items disappeared, but that her SIL and husband denied taking them even after being confronted.

The DVD collection became especially meaningful because OP had openly shared her excitement about watching it, making the situation feel less like accidental borrowing and more like a deliberate disregard for her feelings.

The damaged condition of the returned items likely reinforced the sense that her belongings were not respected.

Some people may view banning family members from the house as an extreme response to small thefts. However, another perspective is that boundaries are not determined only by the financial value of what is taken.

Psychologically, repeated small violations can create the same feelings of insecurity as larger betrayals because they force a person to constantly monitor their environment. OP is not only protecting objects; she is protecting her ability to relax in her own home.

Psychologist and author Dr. Henry Cloud, known for his work on personal boundaries, explains that healthy boundaries are created by deciding what behaviors people will and will not accept in relationships. He emphasizes that boundaries are not punishments but ways to protect emotional wellbeing and create clearer expectations.

Relationship researchers also note that trust depends heavily on consistency and honesty, meaning repeated dishonesty can damage relationships even when each individual incident appears minor.

This insight applies strongly here because the core issue is not the cost of a DVD set or a missing household item. It is the repeated experience of being ignored after expressing a concern. If someone takes something, admits it, apologizes, and changes their behavior, trust can often be repaired.

But when someone denies obvious actions and only returns items after outside pressure, the problem becomes accountability.

OP does not necessarily have to permanently cut off her SIL, but she is reasonable to reconsider allowing unsupervised access to her home. Future visits could happen in another location, or belongings that are meaningful could be stored away before family gatherings.

A relationship should not require someone to treat their own home like a place where they must hide their possessions.

Family connections can be valuable, but family status does not remove the need for respect. The healthiest relationships are not built on avoiding conflict at all costs; they are built when everyone understands that kindness and boundaries can exist together.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters believed OP should stop inviting the SIL back because the behavior was unacceptable

Southern-Interest347 − Do not invite them back over.

Talithathinks − I would not continue to invite them into my home. This is inexcusable.

Laquila − Who cares if she's the only SIL you have. She's a n__ty thief along with her husband.

They're disrespecting you. Treating you like dummies that they can steal off of, because they know they get away with it.

Laughing at you. Ban them from your home for at least 6 months. And tell them why.

You can try having them over again after that, and if they do it again, it's a permanent ban and tell them to get help.

These Redditors supported banning them from the home and explaining the reason to complaining relatives

CaliPirate − Sounds like no contact with kleptomaniac SIL. When they complain, be sure to remind them why.

Original_Rent7677 − Ban them from the house. When the rest of the family complain, tell them why.

Plane_Practice8184 − Why do you keep letting them into your house when they are disrespectful and thieves? From now on your PIL host them.

This group suggested moving future gatherings elsewhere so OP no longer has to host

FrostiePi − Arrange all future meet ups at her parents place. They can lose their s__t as a condition of having family nights.

MrsMoeNo − All future meet-ups can take place outside your home. You are not obligated to host them ever.

These users recommended stronger home boundaries, including restricting access and improving security

Momof41984 − Nope never in my home again.

And I would sure as hell have new locks, preferably one with programmable codes so in case of emergency is one time access and cameras.

If in laws want to know why I would simple say Bond. James Bond. Every time.

datmanrighthere − You only get ONE opportunity to steal from my house. You will never get a second chance to do it.

Steal once and you will NEVER be allowed in my house no matter what anyone says, plain and simple.

Do not invite them and if they show up don't let em in (or turn on the sprinkler 💦 ) and if anyone has feels about it they can stay...

Should family members receive unlimited chances, or does repeated disrespect deserve a permanent boundary? Share your thoughts below!
