She Was Forced Out of Her Family Home, Then Her Parents Asked Her to Babysit Her Adult Stepbrother

Sometimes, the hardest family conflicts are not caused by one single event, but by years of feeling overlooked.

A decision that seems practical to one person can feel deeply personal to someone who has spent a long time questioning where they truly stand.

The original poster (OP) had been living with his mum, stepdad, and younger stepbrother until a housing change forced everyone to make a decision.

Although there were affordable three-bedroom homes available, his parents chose a two-bedroom property, leaving OP to find somewhere else to live.

Now, shortly after being pushed toward independence, they want him to return for a week to look after his 18-year-old stepbrother while they go on holiday.

OP feels conflicted because he cares about his family, but he also feels like he is only needed when it benefits them.

Read on to see whether people think OP is wrong for refusing.

Man feels hurt after being left out of his family’s new home, then asked for a favor

'AITA for refusing to "babysit" my younger brother after my family effectively kicked me out?'

I'm 26 and until recently I was living at home with my mum, stepdad, and my 18-year-old

stepbrother (my stepdad's son).

For as long as I can remember, it's always felt like my stepbrother has been the clear

favourite. I've tried to ignore it over the years, but recent events have really brought those

feelings to the surface.

My family rent, and our landlord recently told us she needs the property back because her

son is moving in. We had to find somewhere else to live. There were multiple three-bedroom

properties within the same budget, but my mum and stepdad decided to rent a two-

bedroom house instead.

That decision meant there was no room for me, so I was effectively told I needed to find

somewhere else to live. As a result, my girlfriend and I are now having to bring forward our

plans to buy a house by about a year. We'll make it work, but it's added a lot of financial

pressure and stress that we weren't expecting yet.. Now here's the part that's really annoyed

me.

My mum and stepdad are going on holiday for a week, and they've asked me to move back

into their new house for that week just to stay with my 18-year-old stepbrother because they

don't want him to get lonely.

He's 18. He's legally an adult. And after choosing a house that had no room for me, they now

expect me to come back and play house-sitter and keep him company.

Part of me feels guilty because it's only a week, but another part of me feels like I'm only

being included when it's convenient for them. When it came to choosing a house, I wasn't

important enough to have a bedroom. But now they need something from me, suddenly I'm

expected to help.

Am I overreacting for not wanting to do it? Would you go back after feeling like you'd been

pushed out, or is it reasonable for me to say no?

One of the deepest hurts in a family is not always a major argument or a dramatic betrayal.

Sometimes it is the quiet feeling that someone only remembers your importance when they need something from you.

That feeling can stay hidden for years, until one moment brings every old disappointment back to the surface.

In this situation, the OP was not only reacting to being asked to babysit an adult sibling for a week.

The request represented something much bigger: years of feeling overlooked and less valued than her stepbrother.

When her parents chose a two-bedroom home despite having other options, she interpreted that decision as a message that there was no longer space for her in their lives.

Then, when they needed help, they expected her to step back into the family role without acknowledging how painful that choice had been.

Her frustration came from feeling like she was treated as optional when convenient but essential when useful.

A different perspective is that the parents may not have viewed the housing decision in the same emotional way.

They may have seen their 18-year-old son as someone who still needed stability during a major transition, while assuming their 26-year-old daughter was ready to build her own life.

In many families, younger children continue receiving extra attention because parents feel responsible for guiding them longer.

However, that does not mean the older child’s feelings should be ignored. Adults can still feel rejected when family decisions appear to prioritize someone else.

This insight helps explain why the OP’s reaction may feel stronger than the immediate situation suggests.

The week of house-sitting is only the visible issue; underneath it is a history of feeling like she had to accept less while still being expected to give more. Saying no is not necessarily about refusing to help. It may be an attempt to protect herself from repeating a pattern where her needs are ignored until someone requires her support.

At the same time, refusing the request does not have to mean ending the relationship with her family.

The OP can acknowledge that her stepbrother may not be responsible for these feelings and that the parents’ choices may have been complicated.

But she can also recognize that her own hurt deserves attention. Healthy family relationships require mutual consideration, not just one person always adjusting.

Sometimes adulthood changes the way people relate to their parents.

Moving out can create space to build independence, but it can also reveal unresolved feelings from childhood.

The OP’s challenge is not deciding whether she is “good” or “selfish” for saying no.

It is deciding what kind of relationship she wants with her family and what boundaries are necessary for that relationship to feel respectful.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters argued that an 18-year-old should be capable of taking care of himself and does not need a sibling to babysit him

KatzAKat − NTA. They don't get to demand your presence when they demanded your

disappearance. Cat/dog sitters get paid $50 to $100 a day. An adult human needing

"babysitting should require more money for watching him. Tell them that you'll do it for $150

day and meals.

FairyFartDaydreams − NTA if an 18yo can't survive for a week they have failed him

ChestnutDecay − NTA, it's absolutely reasonable for you to push back. The 18 year old adult

is not your responsibility.

Glassy-Eyed-Quinn − Nta. He's 18 and should be old enough to look after himself. ...

LabInner262 − NTA. At 18 your bro is old enough to house sit for a week. If they don’t trust

him, they can either take him with them or stay home themselves. It’s really not your problem

to solve. Good luck with your own plans and don’t let them guilt trip you.

This group advised OP to set boundaries, keep the refusal simple, and avoid being pressured into doing something unwanted

PracticalPrimrose − NTA. Keep your response short. Don’t add the other details (though they

are valid; it will add conflict). “Sorry I can’t. My schedule is more full these days given some

recent life things. I hope you guys have an awesome trip though. ”

AlvinOwlHirt − NTA. No. Don't do it. There should be no need to babysit an adult and esp.

under the circumstances. I will tell you what I once told my mom (the Queen of Guilt Trips)

many years ago: I don't want to do Thing. Doing Thing will make me unhappy. You are

deliberately trying to make me unhappy so that I will do Thing.

Vike-Me-TX − If there’s no room for you, there’s no room for you. An 18 year old is legally

fine to stay on his own; whether or not this one is mature enough is another question. But,

you do not live there, and have no obligation to move back for a week. They kicked you out,

and that has consequences for everyone.

If the 18 year old needs supervision, they need to find someone else.

These users suggested that if the parents need supervision for the 18-year-old, they should find another solution rather than relying on OP

MarionberryPlus8474 − NTA. This was crappy behavior on your parents' part. An 18 year old

man needing someone to stay with him to keep him from getting lonely is pretty pathetic.

Your parents are probably more worried that your brother will trash the house while they're gone.

Mytweezer − NTA but all they did was ask. Suggest bro stay with a friend or friend stay with

him if this is about being "lonely. "

These commenters focused on OP’s age and argued that the parents were reasonable for expecting their adult child to move out and begin an independent life

Allergictosquirrels − You're 26. They chose the 2-bedroom house because it was past time for

you to leave the nest. Even if you were going to move out in a year (questionable), then

they'd be stuck with an extra bedroom they didn't need. Don't babysit your brother if you

don't want to. It's a weird and unnecessary request. Does your step brother even want you there?

AnonymooseVamoose − Your brother is 18, there is zero need for a sitter. Full Stop. But

you're also 26, you have your plans for your future and new life, they have theirs.

When kids grow up, they aren’t the only ones with a life that is altering, your parents need to

start living a life as a household of 3 not 4. Family is 4, household is 3. You're old enough to

not be part of their “next chapter of our lives”.

The next chapter is …hopefully 2-4 years of the, with your stepbrother living at home, JUST

LIKE YOU DID. They lost their rental home…they HAVE to make a good plan for the next few

years of their lives and it doesn’t include keeping a room for you until you are good and

ready…well into your later 20’s to leave.

You are closer to 30 than 20. Don‘t conflate your feelings of lesser treatment…it’s not ok to be

biased when it comes to kids. It‘s very ok for parents to expect adult kids to deal with life. You

were getting ready to move on in your life…getting married and buying a home.

You really believe they ought to consider your current needs when grappling with their living situation?

If I am going to be unhappy anyway, I may as well be unhappy doing what I want to do\--and

that is NOT Thing.

evantom34 − There's two things here. You're 26, cut the woe is me bs. If your parents want

you up and out, that's perfectly reasonable. You also don't have to agree to watching little brother.

The decision about the house seems to have reopened years of feelings about being overlooked.

While caring for a sibling for a week may sound like a small favor, the OP feels hurt that they were not considered when their family made a major living decision but are still expected to step in when help is needed.

Was refusing to house-sit a reasonable boundary, or should family obligations come before personal resentment?
