Uncle Mocks His Bisexual Niece, Then Panics When She Names His Secret Girlfriend

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Family secrets have a strange way of surfacing at the worst possible moment.

One careless comment can turn an ordinary dinner into a confrontation, especially when the person making jokes has spent years expecting everyone else to ignore his own behavior.

The original poster had known for a while that her married uncle was seeing another woman, but her father advised her to stay out of it.

She followed that advice until Easter dinner, when her uncle made a humiliating joke about her bisexuality in front of her boyfriend and the entire family.

Angry and embarrassed, she responded with one simple question about a woman his wife had never heard of.

The room immediately changed, and the consequences followed long after everyone left the table.

Scroll down to see whether readers thought her retaliation was justified.

I'm F 20. My uncle (my father's brother) is 37. I remember

when I was a kid, he used to bring a different girl every time

he visited us (not that often, I'll admit). Until he suddenly

stopped visiting for a few years. I was a teenager at the time,

so I had no idea what was going on with him until he came

home for my dad's birthday. He didn't like it, but he let him in.

That night, my dad explained that my uncle was a serial

cheater and had stopped coming over after he called him out

on his behavior, and he didn't like it. But this time he seems to

have changed, but will not be involved in my uncle's business again.

Well, my uncle got married and made a happy home with his

new wife. Until last year when my uncle invited me to watch a

movie in the theater, but he wasn't alone, he had a girl with

him who wasn't his wife, I'll call her Marbella. I was too afraid

to ask about it, but he talked to me alone and told me not to

tell anyone about her. Except that I told my father. He was

disappointed, but told me to mind my own business, and that

he no longer cared what my uncle did.

So, on Easter we had dinner with my family, I brought my

boyfriend (M 20), we have been dating for a few months. One

thing you should know is that I'm bisexual, my uncle knows

this and makes jokes about it at my expense. He came to

dinner with his wife and during the night he made fun of me,

at one point he looked at my boyfriend and said to him "you

need to ask her for a threesome before she does one without

you mate" I was shocked and everyone at the table went

silent, even my grandma who always made snide comments

about everything didn't know what to say. I was embarrassed

and annoyed, so I said, "So, Uncle, how's Marbella?" His wife

asked "who's Marbella" He tried to say "nobody, I dont know"

but I replied "but we went to the movies together last year,

she looked nice" His wife looked at me like "if looks could k__l"

and she said "we're leaving" and they left just like that.

Later my uncle texted me about how immature that was, it

was none of my business to get involved, and now he had to

factory reset his phone because his wife will not stop asking to

see his phone unlocked and is still bothering him about it. He

also found my boyfriend's Instagram and DM'd him "Dude,

control your b__ch" I'm pretty offended, he never insulted me before.

My father told me that I should have minded my own business

because he would never learn and what I did would not teach

him anything. My boyfriend has done nothing but praise me

for my pettiness.. I'm kinda regretting it because seems like I

launched at nuke and I wasn't ready for the fallout. AITBF?

Humiliation can make even a normally restrained person reach for the sharpest truth available.

When someone turns another person’s identity into a joke in front of family, the wounded person may stop thinking about restraint and start searching for a way to restore the balance.

The OP was not only protecting her uncle’s secret when she attended Easter dinner.

She was also tolerating his hypocrisy. He expected her silence about his apparent affair while repeatedly mocking her bisexuality.

His remark to her boyfriend sexualized her identity, questioned her loyalty, and embarrassed both of them publicly.

Mentioning Marbella was therefore not a random attempt to destroy his marriage.

It was an immediate retaliatory response to being humiliated by someone who believed he could expose her private life while keeping his own conduct protected.

Many readers may celebrate the response as perfectly deserved, but another perspective makes the situation more complicated.

The uncle’s wife was the person most seriously affected by the revelation, yet she had not participated in his cruelty.

The OP used a truthful disclosure, but she delivered it during a charged family gathering rather than privately.

That does not make her responsible for the affair or its consequences.

Still, it shows how retaliation can involve innocent people when the goal shifts from revealing wrongdoing to making the offender feel the same shock he caused.

This insight explains why the OP now feels uneasy despite receiving praise from her boyfriend.

Her comeback may have felt powerful in the moment, but the expanding conflict has kept her emotionally tied to her uncle’s behavior.

She was not obligated to protect his deception, and his discriminatory joke deserved a firm response.

However, the safest next step is not another public confrontation.

She should preserve his abusive message, block his access to her boyfriend, and refuse gatherings where he is allowed to demean her.

The family can debate her timing, but the collapse of his secrecy belongs to the person who created the secret.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

This group agrees OP is not TA

dembowthennow − NTB. That was an awesome move. Next

time, Uncle should learn how to keep his mouth shut. If his

wife asks you about Marbella, don't lie.

dunicha − Why the f__k would he take you somewhere with his

affair partner? He's too stupid to get away with it. If his wife

didn't find out like this im sure she would have found out

some other way. NTB.

veloxaraptor − NTB. "He who lives in a glass house, shouldn't

throw stones. " He finally poked the wrong bear. He's a

misogynist getting his just desserts for the way he acts and

speaks. I wouldn't give it any other thought. He made his bed.

linerva − NTBF You never owe a cheater loyalty. He cheated in

front of you, likely used you as cover and had the indecency to

slutshame you in front of your partner and family. Honestly?

He deserves anything he gets.

CorrectAdhesiveness9 − NTB. This dude says something like

that about his NIECE? It’s exceedingly gross that he thinks

about your s__ life at all, let alone publicly. Meanwhile, he

shouldn’t try to make you complicit in his affair(s), and he

shouldn’t be surprised when his efforts blow up in his face.

DirtyPiss − NTB. Ask your dad why his brother is OK to imply

you'd cheat on your boyfriend, but you're not OK to bring up

his actual cheating. Is there a reason he'd rather defender a

cheater over his daughter? Are these values he'd want you to

instill in your children? Your boyfriend has good judgement,

and he's backing you for a reason.

Trust your gut on this one, you did good.

skydiamond01 − NTBF. I'd screenshot his texts and send them

to his wife. Especially after the "control your b__ch" text.

sci_fi_bi − Well he's clearly not bright enough for this

experience to teach him not to cheat, but it'll sure as s__t

teach him not to f*ck with you so lightly. NTB, keep being

gloriously petty!

DaniCapsFan − Your uncle, the serial cheater, who actually had

you meet one of his paramours, has the gall to constantly

bully you over your s__ual orientation. And he decides to bring

up your s__ life at a family meal and imply bisexuality means

you'll cheat? Oh, hell no. He deserves what he got.

His telling your boyfriend to "control" you and calling you a

"b__ch" are just beyond the pale. Your uncle may never learn

to stop cheating, but hopefully he won't bully you again. NTB

Old-Fox-3027 − NTB, but you and your bf need to set very firm

boundaries with your Uncle in the future. It should be made

very clear that sending that message to your bf I’d not

acceptable. I’d screenshot that & his text about the factory

reset and send it to his wife. He’s only being a royal duck

because he thinks he can get away with it.

Tori658 − NTB. If uncle didn’t want to be exposed, he

should’ve kept it in his pants. He created his own mess and

made it your business by dragging you with him to the movies

with said mistress. Not your problem.

figmentry − NTB. Your father is right that your uncle will never

learn that cheating is wrong. But he might learn not to insult

and antagonize you. If he doesn’t leave you alone I

recommend distancing yourself.

headmasterritual − NTB. Someone comes out swinging, they

shouldn’t cry when someone throws a dead cat on the table.

You didn’t ‘launch at nuke. ’ You responded to a series of

airspace incursions with a strong perimeter show of strength.

Uh, and other terrible military metaphors.

Anyway, your uncle is a bullying cowardly piece of s__t who,

like most bullies, dishes it out but really, really cannot take it.

Your father is also so very wrong — your uncle _made_ it ‘your

business’ by trying to swear you to secrecy and compromising your values.

You didn’t set out to form a c__spiracy of silence, he did; and

he tempted fate by needling the person who didn’t want to

cover his ass in the first place. Add idiocy to his cowardice. Not

atypical, really. NTB.

In the end, it became clear that standing up for yourself and calling out inappropriate behavior had consequences, but also set boundaries that were long overdue.

It’s tricky navigating family dynamics when personal values clash with long-standing patterns, but sometimes protecting your dignity and calling out hypocrisy is worth the fallout.

Do you think confronting someone like that was justified, or would letting it slide have been smarter?
