Neighbor Sued Over Six Inches of Fence, So This Rancher Gave Him Exactly What He Asked For

Good neighbors can make life easier, while bad ones can turn even the quietest countryside into a battlefield.

Most property disputes are settled with a simple conversation, a handshake, and a little compromise.

But every so often, someone decides that lawyers are a better way to say hello, and that choice can have consequences they never saw coming.

That was the lesson one family learned after their new neighbors moved in beside their Colorado horse ranch.

Neighbor Sued Over Six Inches of Fence, So This Rancher Gave Him Exactly What He Asked For
Not the actual photo

'Never mess with a rancher and a neighbor. My father had the ultimate revenge when I was a kid…?'

I grew up on a horse ranch in Colorado. We had a long piece of property, about 80 acres, and we raised Missouri fox trotters.

We had lived there for almost 20 years when some folks bought a strip of property way at the back of our land. I

t was a strange plot of land as it was very narrow, and was sandwiched between our back fence, and a busy county road. We were surprised anyone would buy...

Well we never meet these new neighbors until once day my dad gets a notice from a lawyer telling us that after having surveyed the property lines, our back fence...

These folks had never met us, never introduced themselves, our first introduction was this legal demand.

My father was a salt of the earth kind of man, very kind, but also very strong-willed. He called these folks, arranged a meetup, and tried to talk some sense...

First did 3 to 6 inches really matter that much, and why had they not come to us to talk it through? He even offered a number of different compromises.

These folks were hostile from the get-go. They demanded he move the fence immediately, or they would sue.

Apparently the law stated they had to put their house so far away from our fence line, and they wanted to push it as far back from the road as...

I still remember when my dad got home from the meeting. He hung his hat up and shook his head when he told my mom in his slow way. “Well...

They sued, and won, and we were forced to move the fence in 2 weeks. I say we because I was the free slave labor as all farm kids are...

All that fencing material, and the time, were a big cost for my family. But we got the work done in early spring.

Here is where the fun comes in… So the new neighbors broke ground and built all through the end of winter and into spring.

The very next weekend after they had moved into their house, Dad rousted me out of bed and we took the big truck into town to the lumber yard.

I was extremely puzzled as we loaded up a bunch of fencing material, and building supplies.

We didn’t have any big projects going that I knew about, and I kept asking him what it was for, but he just told me to wait and see with...

We build a pen and a small enclosure very near our back property line, directly behind the neighbor's new shiny house. The next day once of our farm friends delivered...

Dan insisted on feeding those hogs table scraps and all the things that would go in the composter, as well as some good balanced h__ feed to keep them healthy.

Now you may not know this, but the smell of pig excrement is directly related to what they eat, and their pen. Table scraps make them smell BAD. I mean...

I had to drive the four-wheeler back there every day to take care of them, and within a month halfway there and my eyes would start watering it smelled so...

When we mucked out the pen with the bobcat we also made the pile right next to the pen. I can’t even imagine how bad the smell was living in...

The neighbors, of course, freaked out, and again without ever even trying to talk to us, went the legal route.

They lost, the area was zoned agricultural, and my dad had done his homework to make sure he was breaking now laws or regulations.

The pigs were far enough from us, and our other neighbors that it didn’t bother anyone but the people he wanted it too bother.

Come fall when winter moved in we sold the pigs to slaughter, and dad stacked up a bunch of building supplies next to the pen and let the neighbors know...

The new neighbors sold their new house in January when the ground was frozen and the new owners would not smell the pen.

Though as soon as the old neighbors were gone we tore down the enclosure, spread the n__ty stuff on the hayfield, and the new neighbors never had any bad smell...

EDIT: Since I have gotten this question a bunch of times... This is what my dad proposed to the neighbor after getting the letter to move the fence, but before...

He really did want to try to cultivate a good relationship with a new neighbor, even though they started on such a lousy foot.

1. He offered to sell them 5 acres of land at the back of the property at a super affordable price so they could have a better plot, and get...

Our back fence line was almost 5 acres long, so it would have shaved an acre long line off is all, and that was wooded land that was not good...

They were not interested. (The had plenty of funds too btw, as they were sitting on a million-dollar payout from selling their home in CA which we knew as they...

Statements that "They had all the money they needed to take us to court if we didn't comply immediately!")

2. My dad asked if he could move the fence over time them, rather than being hit for the cost all at once. Ranchers are not made of money.

We could move the section right behind the proposed building site immediately to help with planning etc first. They were not willing to do that. It all had to be...

3. Lastly, my dad was friends with the two guys that did the inspections for the county for this kind of stuff. We had built many additions and changed on...

They were all in the volunteer fire department together as well. He offered to get all of them together and see what options they had for dealing with the offset...

The neighbor refused, again demanding the fence be moved immediately.

If you see a theme here, so did my dad. There is no pleasing some people, so my dad let him take us to court.

I later found out dad was using the time to save up some money since he figured he would have to move the fence and that was expensive, and he...

I know my dad reached out a couple more times to the neighbor before things went to court too.

Sometimes a disagreement isn’t really about a few inches of land—it becomes a test of pride, communication, and how people choose to treat one another.

That’s exactly what happened here. On paper, the dispute centered on a fence that encroached just three to six inches onto a neighboring property.

In reality, it became a story about first impressions, legal rights versus neighborly goodwill, and the consequences of escalating conflict before attempting genuine conversation.

Legally, the new neighbors were within their rights to insist that the fence be moved. Property boundaries exist for a reason, and accurate surveys help avoid future ownership disputes.

Organizations like the American Bar Association note that boundary disagreements are among the most common conflicts between neighbors, and while the law generally favors enforcing surveyed property lines, attorneys frequently recommend direct communication and negotiated solutions before resorting to litigation.

Many disputes that become expensive courtroom battles could have been resolved through simple compromise and mutual respect.

That recommendation becomes particularly relevant here because, according to the story, the rancher repeatedly offered alternatives.

He proposed selling additional land at a favorable price, offered to move only the section affecting construction first, and even suggested involving county inspectors to find a practical solution.

Whether every detail unfolded exactly as remembered or not, the important point is that negotiation appeared to be on the table before lawyers became the primary method of communication.

This highlights an important principle in conflict psychology: people are far more likely to cooperate when they feel respected than when they feel threatened.

Researchers studying negotiation consistently find that beginning interactions with demands instead of dialogue often triggers defensive behavior and encourages retaliation rather than collaboration.

The Harvard Program on Negotiation has long emphasized that preserving relationships is often just as valuable as winning individual disputes because damaged relationships frequently produce long-term costs that far exceed the original disagreement.

Ironically, that’s exactly what seems to have happened here. The neighbors won their lawsuit and obtained the few inches they wanted—but their legal victory ultimately exposed them to something they hadn’t anticipated: perfectly legal agricultural operations taking place next door.

Many suburban homeowners underestimate just how different life beside an active farm can be. Livestock produce odors, machinery creates noise, and farming schedules rarely align with suburban expectations.

Colorado State University Extension specifically advises people moving into rural areas to understand that smells, dust, insects, slow-moving farm equipment, and animal operations are normal aspects of agricultural living rather than exceptional nuisances.

The guide encourages prospective rural homeowners to research surrounding land uses before purchasing property because farms often predate nearby residential development.

That context also explains why the neighbors’ second lawsuit reportedly failed.

Every state approaches agricultural nuisance claims somewhat differently, but Colorado—like many agricultural states—has legal protections commonly known as “Right-to-Farm” laws.

These laws generally shield established agricultural operations from nuisance lawsuits when they are operating lawfully and following accepted farming practices.

The National Agricultural Law Center explains that these statutes exist precisely because residential development has increasingly expanded into farming regions, leading newcomers to object to ordinary agricultural activities that have existed for years.

In other words, the rancher’s decision to raise pigs may have been motivated by spite, but motivation alone doesn’t necessarily determine legality.

If the operation complied with zoning requirements, livestock regulations, and applicable Right-to-Farm protections, the unpleasant smell alone would generally not be enough to force its removal.

From a legal standpoint, the neighbors encountered the reality that rural property comes with rural neighbors.

From an ethical perspective, however, the story is more nuanced than a simple tale of justified revenge.

The father deliberately chose an action designed to make life miserable for one specific household. While many readers find that deeply satisfying because it feels like poetic justice, retaliation rarely improves relationships.

Had the neighbors attempted a friendly conversation first, they might have gained six inches of land without years of resentment.

Likewise, had the rancher remained focused solely on compliance instead of revenge, the conflict might have ended after the fence relocation.

Still, there’s another lesson buried beneath the humor. The father’s response wasn’t impulsive.

According to the account, he carefully researched zoning regulations, understood agricultural law, and ensured every aspect of the livestock operation complied with local rules before acting.

Rather than breaking laws, he simply exercised rights that had always existed on his property.

That distinction matters because it illustrates how legal knowledge can become a powerful form of self-protection—sometimes more effective than courtroom arguments alone.

Ultimately, this story serves as a reminder that living next to someone is different from merely owning property beside them. Boundaries may be measured in inches, but trust is measured in behavior.

The neighbors may have won the first legal battle, yet lost the larger war because they treated every interaction like a lawsuit instead of the beginning of a long-term relationship.

In contrast, once they moved away, the next owners reportedly became lifelong friends of the family—suggesting that the real difference wasn’t the fence or even the pigs. It was simply how people chose to treat one another before conflict had a chance to grow.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors cheered OP’s father for pulling off what they considered a masterclass in petty revenge.

SoggyAlbatross2 − Now THAT is pro level revenge and some suitably considerate behavior for your new neighbors too. Well done to your dad.

These commenters agreed that being hostile to neighbors from day one is incredibly shortsighted.

[Reddit User] − I'd put 50 bucks on those neighbors being cali transplants

Wasnt but a year or so and there was enough shade to entice the cows to return to this end of the pasture.

These commenters roasted different parts of the story with a dose of humor.

shell1212 − Aww yes. Growing up we had pigs, I even showed pigs in 4-H and FFA, pigs are cute, ornery, and smart but. Holy hell they stink.

Keep them far far way from the house a good gust of wind will make your eyes water.

My show pigs were keep cleaner and were shown more attention than the botcher hogs, but that's to be expected.

Your story made me laugh, your dad is a smart man. Don't get mad get even, in a legal way.

Omsus − We had a long piece of property, about 80 acers Wow. That's a lot of computing power.

Sometimes revenge isn’t loud—it’s legal, patient, and smells absolutely terrible. Readers loved this story not because the rancher “won,” but because he exhausted every reasonable compromise before giving his difficult neighbors exactly what the law allowed.

In the end, the dispute wasn’t really about six inches of fence; it was about respect, communication, and discovering that being technically right doesn’t always make you a good neighbor.

What do you think? Did the rancher’s father deliver the perfect dose of petty justice, or did he take things too far by making the neighbors’ lives miserable? How would you have handled a dispute that started with lawyers instead of a simple conversation? Share your hot takes below!
