Her Neighbors Claimed They Needed to Find a Lost Drone. She Refused to Let Them Into Her Apartment, and Things Got Strange Fast.

Most people expect the occasional awkward interaction with neighbors. A misplaced package, a noise complaint, maybe even a favor now and then.

What they don’t expect is being repeatedly approached by near-strangers who seem unusually determined to get inside their home.

That’s exactly what happened to one woman living alone in an apartment building. At first, the request sounded harmless enough.

A child had received a drone for his birthday, crashed it onto the roof, and the parents were hoping someone could help recover it.

But as the days passed, the situation became increasingly uncomfortable.

The neighbors kept asking. They tracked her down multiple times. They seemed unwilling to take “no” for an answer.

And for a woman whose apartment represented safety and peace after surviving domestic violence, their persistence started to feel less like a simple favor and more like something she couldn’t ignore.

Here’s what happened.

Her Neighbors Claimed They Needed to Find a Lost Drone. She Refused to Let Them Into Her Apartment, and Things Got Strange Fast.
Not the actual photo

'AITAH for not letting my neighbours into my flat?'

About two weeks ago my neighbours stopped me outside my flat and started asking some weird questions…

they initially asked if I could let them into my block, I asked why. They wanted to speak to the woman in

the upstairs flat (that’s me) to ask if they can access the roof from my apartment. I said no, they wouldn’t

be able to because the ceilings are like 12feet high, why? Their son had been bought a drone for his

birthday and crashed it on its maiden voyage somewhere on the roof (it hasn’t fallen back down). I said I

would have a look myself on my balcony and see if I could spot it - I couldn’t.

I had been on my way out to head to a work meeting and arrived 15 minutes late

because I’d taken the time out to look for them when they had asked.

Then yesterday, I was walking home and the woman chased me down in the shop next to my flat. They

approached me negatively and said they had tried to shout me down (I had headphones in), the woman

asked me to come outside. When I had paid for my stuff, I exited and she and her boyfriend were there.

He starts walking towards me like yeah that’s great thanks very much, I was just like what? She asked me

to come outside? The woman goes, yeah I’ve not asked her anything yet. So then the male goes, ahh is it

alright if I come into your flat to have a look for the drone? i just can’t get it out of my head. I said no. I’m

not open to having people coming in and out of my flat. I’ve had a look on the roof myself multiple times

over various days from different windows and from my flat, it is not visible on the roof.. They didn’t take it

very well and tried to negotiate, ‘it will only take 2 mins.’

They are quite aggressive with their approach and I have PTSD from living in DV so my home is my safe

space. I don’t feel inclined to let strangers in for any reason.

There is a man who lives on the other side of me on the top floor and they don’t seem to be asking him for

access to his flat.. AITA for not letting people into my flat to look for their lost drone on the roof?.

**Edit**: thank you for all the comments, you guys really do take home safety seriously!

I’m going to speak with my building management and let them know as well as giving my actual upstairs

neighbour a heads up. Otherwise, I’ll be standing firm if they accost me again. Thank you, all <3

**Edit 2:** Wow, it felt like some kind of therapy to read NTA like 200 times over today. I read every

comment and really appreciate all the sincere concern and conversations about women’s safety in general.

Thank you to people who shared experiences or messaged me to check in. You are all so nice. Thanks again. :)

A Simple Request That Didn’t Feel Quite Right

The first encounter happened about two weeks earlier.

The woman was heading to a work meeting when her neighbors stopped her outside the building.

They explained that their son had recently received a drone as a birthday gift and had managed to crash it onto the roof during its very first flight.

They wanted access to her apartment because they believed it might provide a route to the roof.

The explanation sounded reasonable on the surface, but there was a problem.

She lived in the upstairs apartment and knew the building layout well. The ceilings were extremely high, roughly twelve feet, and there was no practical way to access the roof through her home.

Still, trying to be helpful, she paused her own plans and spent time looking from her balcony and various windows to see if she could spot the drone.

She couldn’t find it.

The search even made her late for an important work meeting.

From her perspective, she’d done what she reasonably could.

Case closed.

Or so she thought.

The Second Encounter Raises Alarms

Days later, things took a turn.

While returning home, she noticed the same woman pursuing her through a nearby shop.

The neighbor later complained that she had tried shouting to get her attention, unaware that the woman had been wearing headphones.

After paying for her items, she stepped outside.

Both neighbors were waiting.

The interaction immediately felt different.

The male neighbor began walking toward her before she even knew why she had been asked outside. Then came the request.

Could he come into her apartment and look for the drone himself?

She said no.

Politely but firmly.

Her home was private. She wasn’t comfortable with people entering. She had already looked multiple times and had found nothing.

For many people, that would have been the end of the discussion.

Instead, they pushed.

“It’ll only take two minutes.”

They tried negotiating.

They didn’t appear happy with her answer.

And that’s when her instincts started screaming that something wasn’t right.

Why the Situation Felt So Unsettling

Part of what made the encounter difficult was the woman’s personal history.

She explained that she suffers from PTSD following domestic violence. Her apartment isn’t just a place where she sleeps. It’s her sanctuary.

For someone who has experienced trauma, feeling secure at home can be incredibly important.

The aggressive tone of the interactions only intensified her discomfort.

What also stood out was a detail she couldn’t stop thinking about.

There was another resident living on the top floor, a man whose apartment might have offered similar access opportunities.

Yet the neighbors didn’t appear to be pursuing him.

They kept focusing on her.

That inconsistency made the entire story harder to accept at face value.

Trusting Your Instincts Matters

Psychologists often discuss the importance of recognizing and respecting personal boundaries, especially for individuals who have experienced trauma.

According to mental health experts at Psychology Today, trauma survivors frequently become highly attuned to situations that feel unsafe or coercive.

While this heightened awareness can sometimes feel uncomfortable, it often serves as a protective mechanism rather than an overreaction.

Similarly, experts at Verywell Mind note that healthy boundaries are essential for maintaining emotional safety and personal well-being. A person’s home represents one of the most important physical boundaries they possess.

That context matters here.

The issue wasn’t really about a drone.

The issue was that someone repeatedly requested access to her private living space, refused to accept her answer, and continued applying pressure after multiple refusals.

Even if their intentions were completely innocent, boundaries still deserve respect.

“No” is a complete answer.

The moment someone begins negotiating after hearing it, the conversation stops being about the original request and starts becoming about respecting another person’s autonomy.

That is precisely why the situation felt so unsettling to many readers.

When a Favor Becomes a Boundary Issue

At its core, this wasn’t about whether recovering a lost drone is important.

Of course it is.

Children get attached to their toys, and parents naturally want to help.

But there are proper channels for solving those problems.

Building management can often access roofs. Maintenance staff can investigate. Property managers can coordinate retrieval efforts safely and legally.

None of those solutions require repeatedly cornering a neighbor and pressuring her to allow strangers into her apartment.

The more the neighbors insisted, the more reasonable her refusal became.

Reddit Had Plenty to Say About This One:

The overwhelming majority of commenters sided with the woman. Many felt the neighbors’ behavior had crossed the line from asking for help into outright harassment.

MotherOfLochs − NTA. They can approach the other neighbour instead. You do not owe them a thing, especially given how aggressive they approached you.

TobyADev − NTA. if they think you have it that badly they’ll just call the police who can deal with it

Alternatively if they start harassing you, you can ring the police to get them to back off

Clevergirluk − NTA. Why would they need you to leave the shop to ask if they can go into your flat to look

for the drone? There's something weird about their interactions so I wouldn't entertain their approaches.

If they ask again, tell them you've said no and the conversation is over.

Since they are obviously watching you so they can "bump into you", I'd probably let the police know in case this escalated.

Several users pointed out that building maintenance would almost certainly have roof access if a drone actually needed retrieving.

NightVisionsII − NTA, but report this to to your landlord if you are renting, get pics of these people, and

file a police report to get this on record. Next time they come at you, TELL them you have filed a

harassment complaint (whether you do or not). Stop entertaining their approaches.

It's clear they are lying in wait for you, so watch your back.

You could also simply ask them why they're not asking anyone else for access just to feel them out. Their

response to this should help you get a feel for what they really want. If it's allowed in your area, put a

security camera in and do not answer the door for them again. You're feeling threatened because you are being threatened.

Listen to your instincts. No conversations without witnesses moving forward!

_Sovaz99_ − Building maintenance can get onto the roof, guaranteed. But there is no drone and never

was. They are looking to see if there is a man also living in the flat, because that will make a robbery that

much more dangerous for them. Thrre is a reason for this pushiness, and it aint no drone.

ravenlovesart − Nta. Do not allow them on your safe space. There is no drone. They are doing

reconnaissance missions to see if you can be robbed.

Others found it suspicious that the neighbors seemed focused solely on her apartment while ignoring other potential access points.Disastrous_Ad869 − Harassing women is easier than going after fellow men. Seems that's what's

happening here. If it happens again. Point out your other neighbour,

then tell them you'll sue them for harassment if they don't stop chasing you down. NTA

Lilylake_55 − NTA. There’s something not quite kosher there. They asked, you looked and found nothing.

That should be the end of it. But now they’re being aggressive about getting into your apartment? No

way. And why aren’t they approaching your male neighbor about going into *his* apartment to gain roof

access? In your place, if they approached again I would report them to the building manager.

Designer_Thought2907 − NTA, they sound very sus

ladycroft_ − Do not let them in. Ever. If they want to look for the drone they can contact a building

maintenance. Simple. And tell them that. Even then building maintenance can look in their behalf. They never need to enter your suite.

Good neighbors respect boundaries.

They ask favors. They accept answers. They move on if the answer is no.

What made this story resonate with so many people wasn’t the missing drone. It was the feeling that something was off long before anyone could prove exactly what.

Maybe the neighbors were simply desperate to recover an expensive toy.

Maybe there was nothing more to it.

But nobody is obligated to open their home to people who make them feel unsafe.

Especially when those people have already demonstrated that they don’t respect a simple boundary.

Sometimes the safest decision is also the simplest one: trust your instincts, lock the door, and let building management handle the rest.
