He Finally Left His Cheating Fiancée, But Her Final Letter Left Him Carrying Everyone Else’s Guilt

Infidelity can leave lasting scars, even when the relationship survives the initial betrayal.

Rebuilding trust requires honesty, accountability, and time, and even then there are no guarantees that things will ever return to the way they were.

Sometimes the hardest decision a person can make is accepting that love alone is no longer enough.

That is the position one Redditor found himself in after discovering his fiancée had broken his trust more than once.

'I (M28) broke up with my ex-fiancée (F27) of 4 years 2 weeks ago after catching her in a huge lie and then finding out 3 days ago that she...

Hey guys,

I need some serious advice as i'm pretty much being cornered by basically everyone and i really don't know what else to do as my mental state is declining and...

A little background:

Me and my ex-fiancée had been together for almost 6 years and engaged for 4 out of those 6 years. I was introduced to her by a close friend at...

Back in April of this year i started noticing little changes in her, she started wearing more revealing clothes to work, started putting more make-up and etc.

Tbh i had no problem with any of that stuff as it's her body, she can wear whatever and put how ever much make-up she wanted to but what made...

I once had asked her why she never invited me to come out with her to which she replied that it's only girls night out and that her other friends...

It all came crashing down when me and her had a huge fight in June because she decided that instead of going out on a date with me she told...

That was it for me, i f__king blew up at her and we had huge fight which resulted in her packing her bags and leaving. I didn't hear from her...

Imagine my surprise when she confessed to me that there was another guy involved and how all this time she was hanging out with him when all this time she...

I f__king blew up, i wanted nothing to do with her and was going to break up with her until she got on her knees and begged me to give...

It made me f__king sick to my stomach but in the end i forgave her and told her to delete all contact with the other guy and that i expect...

Heck, we were even spending more time together but that feeling, that trust wasn't there anymore.

Everything was kinda OK until 2 weeks ago a friend of mine who was visiting another city which was 3 hours from where i lived sent me a picture with...

The picture was of my ex-fiancée at a mall 3 hours away from where we lived holding hands with some stranger who i didn't know.

I f__king broke down, i was heartbroken. She was a b__ch, a piece of s__t especially since i thought she was at work while in reality she was 3 hours...

When i got home from work i waited for her and right away confronted her which she denied and called me a p__cho for not believing her and that i...

Her face told me everything and when the waterworks started i knew that i had made a huge mistake in taking her back so i ended it.

She cried and f__king begged me to think it over and not to throw away everythink that we have together which made me f__king angry and i'm not going to...

I was not proud, i'm still not but she saying s__t like not to throw away everthing when it was her who threwaway everything pissed me off.

I told her to pack her s__t and leave, called her parents and mine and told them everything, her parents came to help her and i told them to basically...

She begged me not to end things but i did, had to for my own piece of mind.

I did not hear from her or her parents until 3 days ago when my parents called me to let know that ex-fiancée had comitted suicide.

Her parents found her hanging and she had left a letter apologising to everyone including my parents and me and how she is sorry from the bottom of her heart...

I am at a f__king lose, ex-fiancée friends and family are blaming me and my own mother told me that it was my fault, she told me that i should...

I am f__king disgusted, i have currently taken some time off from work and have not a single clue what to do.

The ending of this story is devastating, but it also raises one of the hardest questions people ask after a suicide: Could someone else have prevented it? That question often brings overwhelming guilt, even when the answer is far more complex than it initially feels.

The OP’s relationship had already suffered a profound breach of trust before the tragedy occurred. After discovering that his fiancée had been secretly seeing another man, he chose to forgive her and attempt reconciliation—a decision that required considerable emotional vulnerability.

When he later learned she had continued the deception, the second discovery shattered what little trust remained. Ending the engagement was a painful but understandable response to repeated dishonesty.

At the same time, the OP acknowledges something he deeply regrets: in the heat of the breakup, he slapped her. That act of physical violence should not be minimized or excused, regardless of the emotional circumstances.

However, it also should not automatically be interpreted as the sole cause of everything that followed. Multiple difficult truths can exist simultaneously.

It’s also understandable why the fiancée’s family is searching for someone to blame.

Suicide often leaves survivors desperate to construct a clear narrative because accepting that a loved one’s death resulted from a complex mix of psychological, emotional, and situational factors can feel unbearable.

Assigning responsibility to one person may offer an illusion of certainty during overwhelming grief. Unfortunately, grief-driven blame rarely reflects the full reality.

Research consistently shows that suicide is rarely caused by a single event.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), suicide is the result of multiple interacting factors, including mental health conditions, emotional distress, relationship difficulties, life stressors, and individual vulnerabilities.

While a breakup may act as a precipitating event, it is generally one part of a much broader picture rather than the sole cause.

Similarly, the World Health Organization (WHO) describes suicide as a complex public health issue influenced by biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors rather than one isolated incident or one person’s actions.

Psychologist Dr. Thomas Joiner, whose Interpersonal Theory of Suicide is one of the leading models in suicidology, argues that suicidal behavior typically develops through a combination of feeling like a burden, experiencing profound social disconnection, and acquiring the capacity to act on suicidal thoughts. \

A relationship ending can intensify those feelings, but it does not by itself explain why one person dies by suicide while countless others facing similar heartbreak do not.

This perspective is echoed by psychiatrist Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, who has repeatedly emphasized that “Suicide is rarely caused by a single event.” Instead, she explains that it usually results from multiple risk factors converging during a period of crisis.

Applied to this situation, that distinction matters enormously. The OP was entitled to end a relationship after repeated betrayal. Remaining in a relationship out of fear that a partner might harm themselves is not a healthy or sustainable foundation for either person.

At the same time, acknowledging his own regrettable behavior during the breakup—particularly the slap—is important. Taking responsibility for one’s actions is different from accepting responsibility for another person’s suicide. Those are separate moral and psychological questions.

Moving forward, the healthiest course for the OP would likely involve seeking trauma-informed counseling. Survivors who lose someone to suicide frequently experience what clinicians call complicated grief, marked by persistent guilt, intrusive “what if” thoughts, and self-blame.

Therapy can help distinguish appropriate remorse for one’s own behavior from misplaced responsibility for another person’s final decision. Limiting exposure to hostile accusations from grieving relatives, while painful, may also be necessary until emotions have settled.

Ultimately, this tragedy reflects the collapse of a relationship already damaged by deception, broken trust, and escalating emotional pain on both sides.

Through the OP’s experience, the story illustrates a difficult reality: people are responsible for how they treat one another, but they are not omnipotent over another person’s mental health or final choices.

Compassion for the woman who died, accountability for harmful actions during the breakup, and recognition that suicide almost never has a single cause can all coexist without reducing an extraordinarily complex human tragedy to one person being entirely at fault.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors backed OP, emphasizing that the breakup was a reasonable response to a long-term affair, repeated lies, and broken trust.

[Reddit User] − You did not do this. Her death is not, in anyway, AT ALL your fault. This is the only thing you need to focus on.

Secondly. You need therapy. These, are TWO major trauma events happening in very quick succession and you can’t do this alone. Therapy therapy therapy

LucyShoes2222 − I'm very sorry for your loss. None of this is your fault. Your fiancee was carrying on a longterm affair, lied to you about it repeatedly, took off...

No one stable behaves like that and no one mentally well commits suicide over a breakup.

She clearly had other mental health issues that she kept hidden. You are not responsible for her choice to take her life. It was her decision. Her guilt over her...

For all she knew you might have changed your mind but she didn't give you that chance, she didn't try to prove herself trustworthy or give you time, she thought...

She wasn't thinking about you, or her family, or her friends---all of whom are now upset and devastated and probably blaming themselves for not realizing how sick she was.

Mourn the loss of your relationship, the future you had planned to have together, and her life---but do not blame yourself for this. You are not at fault in any...

TherealMSK343 − Agreed. Look brother this isn’t your fault. Nothing I say is going to make a difference, but you are a victim here.

My best advice I can give you is to get the f__k away from this situation and protect yourself. You are not to blame nor should you feel responsible for...

Please be good to yourself, and if you need a place to run to/live near Northern Va hmu. I got you.

These commentors criticized the ex-fiancée’s family and friends for directing their grief at OP instead of recognizing that her actions—and ultimately her decision—were her own.

MamaHuntress − So I'm pretty sure this is a copy and paste story since I've heard this one like 3 times, but I'll still give my advice.

This is not 'your" fault and everyone except the mom are just grieving. Sooner or later they will realize that she did this on her own and it's not your...

The only thing you can do is wait it out. As for the mom. 'you' need to tell her in no uncertain terms that she is allowed to be sad...

Only a terrible mother would say something like that and she needs to apologize before she loses a son, too.

akali1987 − I know I’m not supposed to speak ill of the dead but Jesus what a p__cho. Look, this isn’t your fault (obviously).

Don’t let her decisions on her life put you down. You did what’s right for your own mentality. As for her friends and family, shame on them for using her...

Tell them to go to hell if they don’t like decisions you clearly were entitled to.

This heartbreaking story leaves no easy answers. While many readers felt deep sympathy for everyone involved, most agreed that one person’s decision to end their life cannot be placed solely on the shoulders of a partner who chose to leave after repeated betrayal.

At the same time, the revelation that the breakup turned physical added another painful layer that shouldn’t be ignored. What do you think?

Is the OP responsible for what happened afterward, or are grief and guilt causing others to look for someone to blame? Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments.
