Twins Trick the Thermometer to Attend Their School Party, Then Immediately Regret Their Clever Plan

Children can be surprisingly inventive when something important is at stake.

A day at home may usually sound perfect, but even feeling sick can seem worth hiding when friends, songs, and a special school celebration are waiting.

One parent thought her eight-year-old twins were too unwell to attend school after they felt unusually warm during the night.

The girls, however, were desperate not to miss their end-of-year party and the goodbye song they had practiced for weeks.

After both appeared to have normal temperatures, they quickly got ready and joined their classmates.

Everything seemed fine until one twin became tearful during the celebration and admitted she did not feel well.

Then, a classmate revealed a detail about the morning temperature check that left the parent completely stunned.

Scroll down to see how she responded.

Parent discovers her twins secretly fooled a thermometer to attend a special school event

'My daughters tricked me into going to school?'

Recently our eight year old twins both felt hot at night. In the morning, I

sent a message to school that they were ill. When they woke up I told them

they could go back to sleep. Usually this would be met with enthusiasm, but

not that day.

As it turned out there was a party for the end of the year where they were

going to the playground. They were also going to sing a goodbye song for

the teacher. They practiced a lot with their friends memorising the lyrics, and

were singing it at home so much that it was permanently stuck in my head.

I told them they can go to school if they do not have a fever. I was going

around the house trying to find the thermometer, and when I finally found it

the girls were sitting nicely on the sofa waiting for their temperature to be

taken. It was a perfect 36.8 and 36.7. So they hurriedly got ready for school

and went off.

Parents were also invited to the party. They sang the song, it was very cute. I

was talking with some of the parents when I saw that one of the girls was

crying. I went over and she said she wasn't feeling good. I put my arms

around her.

A friend of her was next to her and told me that he knew the girls' trick. I

was like, what trick?? After some convincing he told me that the girls drank

some cold water before I took their temperature, so that the thermometer

would not show that they had a fever. My daughter started crying. She asked

if I was angry.

I did not know what to say! I was ... very impressed. I was not sure if telling

her that would be the best parenting decision. But I thought that she was

experiencing the consequences of her actions already by not feeling good.

So I told her I am very impressed, it was very clever, but that it probably

would have been better to stay at home. She agreed, and hugged me.

Children can make surprisingly sophisticated choices while still lacking the judgment to understand their consequences.

That combination often leaves parents caught between concern, disappointment, and a reluctant admiration for the creativity involved.

The twins were not trying to avoid school.

They wanted so badly to attend an important end-of-year celebration that they devised a way to influence the thermometer reading.

Their plan showed determination, cooperation, and practical reasoning, but it also placed their health behind an immediate emotional reward.

Once one daughter became unwell at the party, the deception stopped feeling clever to her.

Her tears and anxious question about whether her parent was angry suggest that she already understood she had crossed a boundary.

A fresh perspective is that the parent’s response did not necessarily reward dishonesty.

By acknowledging the intelligence behind the plan while also pointing out that staying home would have been wiser, the parent separated the child’s ability from her decision. That distinction matters.

Calling her “bad” could have created shame, while pretending the deception did not matter would have missed an important safety lesson.

The natural consequence, feeling ill during the event she had worked so hard to attend, had already made the cost of the choice concrete.

That guidance supports the parent’s instinct to avoid turning the moment into a harsh confrontation.

The daughter was sick, embarrassed, and already confronting the outcome of her plan.

A severe punishment might have shifted her attention away from health and honesty toward fear of being caught.

Still, a later conversation was necessary.

The girls needed to understand that fever is not merely a number blocking access to fun; it can signal that the body needs rest and that attending school while ill may affect other people.

The most useful response would combine warmth with a clear future rule: never manipulate a health check, and always tell an adult how the body feels.

The parent could also praise their resourcefulness while explaining that cleverness becomes wisdom only when it is used safely.

The twins’ scheme was impressive, but the deeper parenting victory was creating a moment where one child could admit what happened, expect honesty in return, and still feel safe enough to ask for a hug.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters shared funny childhood attempts to manipulate thermometer readings

xenophilian − Your kids are smarter than mine. Mine tried the cup of hot tea

trick, but it was pretty obvious she didn’t have a temperature of 90 C

gazagirl1979 − I once caught my son in his room assuming the ski jump

position gingerly tryna put his forehead on the radiator to fake a temperature 😂😂😂

jlhinthecountry − I put it on a lightbulb. This was in the 1970s, so the bulbs

got super hot. Mom said that according to the thermometer I was dead.

Then she sent me to school.

Spokeswoman − I held the thermometer by a light bulb so it would read

higher! It worked.

queendecaffeine − My brother and I put the thermometer against the

lightbulb of the lamp in our room. Then we always had to worry we had

gotten it too hot 😂

Technical-Respect533 − I tried the opposite, put the thermometer in a cup of

tea. Mum said that as I had a temperature of 90 degrees and wasn't dead, I

was probably well enough to go to school

These Redditors praised the mother’s response and found the children adorable

Personal-Yesterday77 − You sound like a lovely mum. And your kids are

clever. Win win.

Civil_Asparagus7591 − This is adorable. ❤️

Hot_Sherbet_1603 − This story was amazing. Funny kid, and amazing

reaction as a parent - lucky kids you have there

These users recalled childhood events they desperately did not want illness to spoil

Francie_Nolan1964 − When I was 5, I was excited for a friend's birthday

party. I was crabby and my mom made me take a nap first. When I awoke I

had a fever and chicken pox all over. I'm 62 now and I still remember missing

that party. So I'm kinda glad that your kids got to go.

Vegetable-Card-3561 − My mother took me to kindergarten when I was sick

because it was picture day. She stayed until my pic was done and then took

me home. I look terrible in that photo!

This story shows a surprisingly complicated parenting moment hidden inside a funny childhood scheme.

The twins were clever enough to find a loophole because the school event mattered so much to them, but they also learned that being clever does not always mean making the right choice.

The parent’s response focused on understanding rather than punishment, turning a small act of dishonesty into a lesson about listening to their bodies and making better decisions.

Do you think praising their creativity was the right approach, or should the parent have been stricter about the deception?

How would you handle a child who was determined to avoid missing an important moment? Share your thoughts below.
