Objects from childhood can hold memories that are impossible to replace. To one person, something may look old or insignificant, but to another, it can represent comfort, history, and a connection to an important part of their life.

The original poster was preparing to move into a new apartment with her fiancé when she noticed that a beloved childhood item was missing from her belongings.

She assumed it had been misplaced during the packing process, but the truth left her completely devastated. Her fiancé admitted that they had thrown it away because they believed it was just an old, damaged object with no real value.

The poster was hurt not only because the item was gone, but because such a personal possession had been discarded without her permission. Now, she is questioning whether this action reveals a deeper problem in their relationship. Read on to see why she reconsidered the entire engagement.

'AIO for breaking off my engagement because my fiance threw away my "Night Night"?'

this is a throw away account because I don't want my family to find out yet.

we were preparing to move to a new apartment when I noticed that my beloved "Night Night" (my favorite childhood toy)

was no longer in my bin of childhood belongings. I thought that it might have been misplaced in the chaos of packing for the move.

When my fiance got home from work, I asked them if they had seen "NightNight" anywhere.

That is when they told me that they threw NightNight away because it was "a s__tty 90s cat pillow that is falling apart."

I couldn't believe that they threw NightNight away without talking to me first, and now I am distraught.

I told them that I can't get married to someone who could be so selfish. AIO for breaking it off?

Sometimes the smallest objects carry the biggest pieces of our history. To one person, an old toy may look like a worn-out piece of fabric, but to another, it can represent childhood, comfort, memories, and a connection to a version of themselves that no longer exists. The value of sentimental objects is rarely measured by their appearance.

In this situation, the OP was not devastated because a damaged cat pillow was thrown away. The pain came from the decision being made without their involvement. “Night Night” represented something emotionally significant, and their fiancé had enough information about OP’s attachment to know that personal belongings from childhood should not be discarded casually.

The moment revealed a deeper concern: whether their partner respected the emotional meaning of things they personally did not understand.

A different perspective is that the fiancé may not have realized the importance of the item. To them, it may have genuinely looked like an old, damaged object taking up space during a stressful move. Many people naturally evaluate possessions through practical value, while others attach memories and identity to objects.

Neither approach is automatically wrong. The problem is the lack of communication. A partner does not need to personally understand why something matters in order to recognize that it matters to someone they love.

Psychologist Dacher Keltner has researched the role of emotions and relationships, emphasizing that empathy involves understanding another person’s internal experience rather than judging whether their feelings are objectively reasonable.

People often build stronger relationships when they acknowledge what carries meaning for others, even when they do not share the same attachment.

This insight explains why the conflict may feel much larger than a single pillow. The fiancé’s action could have unintentionally communicated, “If I do not see value in something, I can decide it does not matter.” For someone preparing to marry, that can raise a frightening question: will my feelings be respected when my partner does not understand them?

A sincere apology and recognition of the emotional harm may matter more than replacing the object itself, especially because sentimental items often cannot truly be replaced.

At the same time, ending an engagement is a major decision, and the couple’s next step depends on the larger relationship pattern. If this was an isolated mistake followed by genuine accountability, repair may be possible. If it reflects a repeated habit of dismissing OP’s feelings, then the pillow may simply have revealed an existing problem.

The real issue is not whether a childhood toy deserves to be saved forever. It is whether two people about to build a life together can respect each other’s emotional worlds. Love does not require sharing every attachment, but it does require treating the things that matter to a partner with care.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

They saw the act as deeply disrespectful and a major relationship warning sign

xray_anonymous − NOR. It’s immensely disrespectful.

He deliberately threw away something irreplaceable and immensely sentimental of yours on purpose without telling you

because he knew it was wrong and you’d stop him. Knowing you’d be upset about it but doing it anyway.

He made a unilateral decision about your belongings. Do not marry this man. You’re making the right choice.

He thinks his opinion is the only one that matters.

Ok-Perspective-5109 − NOR Something like that is a dealbreaker for me. I have my favorite childhood stuffy and my baby blanket.

They live on the couch. I am middle aged and I dare anyone to touch either one.

JunkMaiden − No. F them for real. Any human with any amount of respect for you would've considered your feelings and at least talked to you about it.

This shows a lack of respect and a lack of consideration for you and your feelings at the most basic level. You can do better.

They believed destroying a sentimental item showed a serious lack of care

Foxygen6 − NOR, throwing out something with great sentimental value is unforgivable

Perfect-Sugar-6354 − NOR This was something they knew was important to you and they literally destroyed it.

Why would you want to spend your life with someone who demonstrated a complete disregard for your feelings?

They shared that a loving partner should protect and value sentimental belongings

ZealousidealChest796 − NOR, my husband has welcomed all my sentimental belongings with love and grace

he is a man who doesn’t like a lot of stuff but he made room for everything special to me, bought me a giant display cabinet

and stuffed animal chains and floating bookshelves so everything is neat and organized,. He upgraded my treasures.

A man worthy of spending your life with will love every piece of you and make room for them in your life together.

They viewed this incident as a warning of possible future behavior

EvaSirkowski − A warning of things to come.

They argued the issue was about respect, not just the item itself

Casual_Observer_62 − And don't listen to the gaslighting when he tries to say I can't believe you're throwing away this relationship over a pillow

it's not really about the pillow is it it's about the lack of respect the lack of empathy and back to the lack of perspect

I'll be God damned I had a father who used to do that s*** I was cleaning up you don't need that stuff it ain't yours to the side man

it ain't yours to decide don't put your grubby hands on my belongings and do anything with them but like they're not yours to

make a decision about that was absolutely no respect for you no consideration of

what your feelings would have been I'm with everybody else welcome to cut your losses now

They shared personal examples of partners valuing childhood keepsakes

zombie-magnet − NOR- I was distraught when my mom took away my beloved BaBa when I was a teenager.

My partner got me the exact same lamb for my Birthday a couple years ago because he knew how much it meant to me.

He doesn’t even judge me for sleeping with her every night. Your fiancé is an insensitive person.

Embarrassed-Order-83 − I would probably maybe definitely go to prison if someone threw away my Ratty that I’ve had since childhood. NOR.

They described losing a beloved item as a final breaking point

WolfRadish_Official − My first husband was very abusive in all the ways and also cheated multiple times.

But the thing that finally got me to the point where I didn't care anymore what the consequences of leaving him would be. ...

Was when, in a fit of cruelty, he threw my Paddington away. That bear had been with me through EVERYTHING. I considered him my son.

I will never, ever forgive him for that. NOR

They believed the choice was intentional and showed cruelty

Co319809 − NOR. He knew what it meant to you and threw it away anyway.

There is no way he didn’t think this would upset you. He’s either mean or extremely stupid.

GraphicRenn − NOR. Young children know better than to take other people's s__t, let alone throw it away.

The fact that it was in a bin tells me he went out of his way to purposefully be a d__k. Sorry your Night Night is gone.

I have a few things from my childhood that would be heartbreaking to lose.

They said crossing this boundary was enough reason to leave

NamasteNoodle − This is absolutely a reason to throw someone out of your house and break off.

He crossed the boundary and threw away something that was precious to you. People who care about you don't do that.

Years ago I was married and had to work 3 days later and when I got home from work

my new husband told me that he had found my box of memorabilia and thrown it away.

I told him if he didn't have it back in my house within 20 minutes he could get the hell out.

Luckily the dumpster in the apartment we lived in had not been emptied yet. He brought it back.

I told him if he ever touched any of my s__t again or crossed the boundary like that then I would absolutely

in the relationship immediately because it was so disrespectful. 6 months later he viciously SA me and I divorced him.

When people show you who they are, listen. He just showed you who he was, self-centered, petty, jealous and controlling.

Get out now while you can do so easily.

They considered throwing away a childhood toy a major red flag

Background-Gain886 − Throwing away a childhood toy without asking first is a huge red flag, you're not overreacting.

Was ending the engagement an overreaction to losing a childhood pillow, or was the missing toy simply a sign of a deeper lack of respect? Should partners always ask before throwing away sentimental belongings? Share your thoughts below.
