Boyfriend’s Family Thought Her Dog Business Was “Their Money” Until She Shut It Down

in Social Issues

When money enters a relationship, disagreements can quickly reveal deeper beliefs about ownership, independence, and expectations for the future.

What one person sees as a shared life can look very different to someone who built something entirely on their own.

The original poster (OP) is a young dog breeder who turned her passion into a successful business through years of work, investment, and dedication.

After reaching financial stability, she started facing pressure from her boyfriend’s family, who believe her earnings should be shared with him.

OP insists that the business, expenses, and responsibilities are hers alone.

But when a family conversation crossed a major boundary, she finally decided to speak up.

Read on to find out what happened next.

Woman defends her income after her boyfriend’s family demands a share of her earnings

Boyfriend’s Family Thought Her Dog Business Was “Their Money” Until She Shut It Down
not the actual photo

'Wibta if I didn’t split my income with my boyfriend like his mother keeps trying to have me do ? Help /advice is needed?'

I 21 (f) and partner 26 (m) have been together for 3 years living together for

2 years , and what I make yearly has been the topic since we moved in

together. For context I am a dog breeder I started breeding about three

years ago and have come quite a long way . All of my dogs go through

extensive checkups, boarding/training, and all of my dogs are titled in agility

,rally , scent work and tracking which costs me thousands a year. I started out

making 36k yearly then the following year 67k and now I make about 140k

yearly. I have 4 dogs (3 females and 1 male. I also have a stud I use from

another breeder) . Here is where this issue started . I bought a puppy last

year after I moved in with my boyfriend. She is solely mine legally and I take

care/ pay for everything just like I do with my other dogs . I went on a trip to

visit family and asked my bf to watch my dogs and if anything came up just

call me . Well 2 days after I left Millie ( the puppy I bought) became very

lethargic. Stop eating and over all looked ill . He and his mother took her to

the vet and come to find out she had eaten an extension cord and part of a

blanket . The surgery was 6k with a 500 deposit to start the surgery until I

arrived. I told him to pay for it and I’d pay him back . I got back two days later

gave him the 500 deposit back and paid the remainder 5500 when I picked

her up . Since then his mother says whatever I make from the dogs it need to

be split even as it is his dogs as well. I’ve told her multiple times he has no

right to any money I make just as I have no right to anything he makes. As

well as It would be different if we both bought the dogs together and we

both did equal amounts of work / time and money into the dogs . Last week I

got a bank statement and had it opened on my countertop and his mother

saw what I had saved which was roughly 160k , and brought it up at a family

dinner she hosted three days ago and said “ I don’t know why you won’t split

half of it with him it’s not like it won’t become both of your money when u

get married “. I will admit I did snap a little bit . I told her that my money is

none of her business. And that she could kiss my ass if she thought my

boyfriend would get a damn thing from me . Now I being told by my side and

his side of family that I ATA . So wibta if I didn’t share any other the money I

make ?. Update !

For those who have made statements on saying im AH because I am a

breeder. Educate yourself on ethical breeding ,puppy mills , and backyard

breeding. Puppy mills breed and don’t care for the well fair of the mothers

and the puppies themselves. Breeding the mothers until they serve no

purpose then either giving them away or euthanizing . I’ll give an example of

each and yall can do the research ( inkydinkdalmatians) that is a puppy mill.

Backyard breeding

Includes very little health testing, having 10+ dogs breed at once having

multiple litters a year, no title of any sort , and don’t have homes lined up

prior to the breeding, and not breeding dogs who are not in standard, as

well as breeding mixed dogs . Here is my example. (Crockettdoodles) do

what you want with this information. Ethical breeding

Health clearance from multiple generations, titling of all dogs with multiple

titling, ofa’s, linking every ounce of information/ proving what is being told

/shown, breeding to breed standard, not adding to the shelter population

and not mass producing , as well as planning litters carefully, and

temperament testing. Here is my example. (Cosmic caliber standard poodles)

As well as some people commented that is way to much money to be

making off of 3 dogs let’s do the math on this real quick 5500 x 14 which was

my average =77k

77k x3 =231k (I don’t breed all of them yearly )so if I did 77k x 2=154k after

travel , vet check ups, dock, cropping ( I make 140k) yearly that is just a rough

estimate

On to the actual update though. My bf didn’t say anything on the matter until last night when I snapped and lost my s__t . I asked him why didn’t...

stand up for me and put her in her place and his response to that was “ she is

going to say something whether or not I say something to her about it “. And

I said okay don’t be mad at me when I lay into her .his response was “ don’t

do that she’s sensitive you know how she is “ this morning she texted me

saying “hey can we meet up for breakfast?” I said “ actually that’s perfect as I

have some stuff to say to you” she responded with 👍🏻 . We met and

immediately she was like “ so have you come to your senses on splitting your

money with z (bf name ) and I lost it I told her that if she is so worried about

me giving him half of my money then I think it’s fair he split his money . Z

makes 80k yearly . Her response was like “ why should he “ I said “ why

should I then “ she said “ because he can manage money better and women

shouldn’t have that much money to themselves”. And I just laughed in her

face . I told her she can have her son back and she can dictate what he does

with his money, but it sure as hell wasn’t going to be me .

Money can reveal the hidden expectations people carry into relationships.

Many couples discover that financial disagreements are rarely only about dollars.

They are often about control, fairness, independence, and what each person believes they are entitled to receive from another person’s hard work.

In this situation, the OP was not simply protecting a bank account.

She was defending the idea that her career, investment, and personal responsibilities should still belong to her.

The conflict began because the OP’s income grew dramatically from a business she built herself.

Her dog breeding operation requires significant time, financial investment, and careful planning.

While her partner helped during one emergency by taking the puppy to the vet, his mother interpreted that single event as evidence that he deserved ownership over the entire business.

For the OP, that felt unfair because she had spent years building the foundation before that moment ever happened.

What makes this situation more complicated is that both sides may be viewing “partnership” differently.

Some families believe that once two people live together or plan marriage, everything automatically becomes shared.

Others believe that commitment does not erase individual ownership, especially when one person creates a business independently.

The disagreement is not only about money; it is about where the boundary between support and entitlement should exist.

A fresh perspective is that the boyfriend’s mother may not only be asking for financial fairness.

Her comments suggest a deeper belief about traditional roles, especially when she argues that women should not manage large amounts of money independently.

That shifts the issue away from the dogs and toward a broader question of autonomy.

The OP’s reaction was not just frustration about being asked to share income; it was a response to feeling that her independence was being questioned.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s boundary is understandable.

Sharing a future with someone does not automatically mean giving up ownership of everything created before marriage or everything one person independently builds.

A couple can choose to combine finances, but that decision should come from mutual agreement rather than pressure from family members.

At the same time, the situation raises an important question for the OP and her partner: what does marriage actually mean to them financially?

If he believes her business will become “their” money after marriage, they need to discuss that directly before taking the next step.

Marriage can involve shared assets, but it also requires respect for each person’s contributions and expectations.

Ultimately, the biggest concern may not be the mother’s opinion. It is whether the boyfriend is willing to stand beside his partner when outside pressure challenges their relationship.

Financial disagreements can be solved, but feeling unsupported by the person closest to you can create deeper wounds.

A healthy future depends on both partners deciding together what belongs to them as a couple and what remains individually theirs.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed OP should leave the relationship because the boyfriend failed to defend her and allowed family interference

This_Tradition_9221 − NTA. Also, dump the bf. He was at LEAST negligent in letting your puppy eat things out shouldn't have. If you do decide to marry this list, make...

Ancient_Star_111 − Not only should you keep all your money, you need to dump him. You don’t have a MIL problem, you have a BF problem. He should be intervening...

Now start looking for a new place to live 🫶🏼

Main-Syrup-1334 − You are not married to him! Do not split anything with him! And his mother needs to b__t out, mind her own business, smf shut up! !!

This group supported keeping finances separate and only sharing agreed household expenses

lun4d0r4 − I say this to EVERYONE. .. If neither party is a prearranged stay at

home partner, do not mix finances. Get a joint account that BOTH contribute

equally to for household and life admin costs, but otherwise your money is

your money as their money is their money.

I do not believe in mixing money fully unless you've both agreed for

someone to be a stay at home.

Adventurous-Bee4823 − If, and I’m saying, if again, you two get married keep

your finances completely separate. Hell, I even suggest a prenup. His mother

is nuts. What did your boyfriend have to say about the situation?

These Redditors focused on the boyfriend’s silence and suggested it showed possible agreement with his mother’s demands

LongMathematician656 − Absolutely not, the fact that he isn’t saying

anything to stop him tells me he agrees with her. I’d think hard about the future of this.

ELShaw1112 − The bigger question is WHY HASN’T YOUR BOYFRIEND

OPENED HIS MOUTH! Does he agree with his mom? Why hasn’t he told her

to shut up and mind her business. She wants HIM to have more money so

SHE can get money from him. Why else would she think that YOUR livelihood

should be shared with him when he doesn’t do anything.

This is a glimpse of your future. Get that PRENUP! Lastly, HELL YEAH for

shutting her nosy ass down! NTA!

These users highlighted multiple warning signs and advised OP to reconsider a future with him

saltcrown − You are 21 cut your losses and run. If you marry him it’s never

going to change.

GlitteringClass6634 − NTA lots of red flags 🚩 though

These commenters emphasized protecting OP’s financial information and preventing others from accessing her money

BeeFree66 − Do not let -anyone- else know your finances. That includes your

current bf, future bf, your family, bf's family and all friends. Now you know

why. Your statement must be shredded once you're done with it. Get it in

the mail and put it away til you can read it.

No more leaving it out, even in the closed envelope - cuz that envelope

might "accidently" open by itself! Verify what you need to verify and shred it

right away. If you need info, the bank will happily help you with that. That's

what customer service is for at the bank.

Hide alllll of your financial info, including your tax bill and tax form you do in

April. Nobody else needs to know your financial business. End of my "hide

your assets" rant. Wtf should you give ANY money to a bf? ? This is your

career, your business that you built up. bf is just along for the ride \[so to speak\].

Lock down all your financial stuff so bf and any greedy family member can't

help themselves to your accounts. You left out your statement; your

account# is now known by others. Keep an eye on your finances. Shred your

statement. Don't give any money to any person. Well, this has me all aggravated.

Silly_Bug_2696 − short : NO ! !! Long: why does his f mither has anything to

say in this matter ? Wtf? ??? You worked and work hard to make that money,

it’s your f money! Don’t you EVER spend those if it’s not for you or your

business! ! Wtf? !! Entitled MIL B ! !!!! The nerve! !!! Omg! !! And he I presume

doesn’t say a word because he agrees to it!

Everyone wants easy money just from sucking dry someone! ! Omg! Please

dumb this man and his mother ! !!! Take care OP! I hope you choose wisely!

OP’s situation was never just about money. It became a question of boundaries, ownership, and whether her hard work would be respected.

She built a business, invested thousands into her dogs, and maintained responsibility for every expense, yet her boyfriend’s family felt entitled to claim part of her success.

While some may argue couples should eventually share finances, others believe that should happen through mutual choice, not pressure from outside voices.

Do you think OP was right to defend her earnings, or should she consider her boyfriend’s future role differently? Share your thoughts below.
