Mother-In-Law Shares Private IVF News, Then Acts Like She’s The One Being Hurt

Some personal struggles are not just stories to share, they are experiences people have the right to reveal on their own terms.

The original poster is going through IVF after years of trying to conceive and says the process has been physically and emotionally overwhelming. She chose to tell only a small circle of trusted people, including her in-laws.

However, she discovered that her mother-in-law had shared the details with friends and extended family because she was struggling with questions about the process. Now the poster feels her privacy was taken away during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.

'AITA for getting angry at my mother‑in‑law and ignoring her calls after she told everyone about my IVF journey?'

I (34f) have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. We are now in an IVF process. It’s very hard, physically and emotionally and I feel very vulnerable.

My husband is amazing and a few friends and my parents know about it. They support me. My in‑laws also know.

My relationship with my mother‑in‑law is not great. She often has the main character behavior. She wants to be the center of attention all the time.

When I had a traumatic birth with my daughter, the first thing she said was: “She looks just like me.”

At my baby shower she made everything about herself.

At a family party she even took out an old photo album to show everyone how much my daughter looks like her, or her daughter,

or her aunt, or some distant relative. Her curly hair? Apparently she got that from her grandmother’s sister. Even though I have a full head of curls myself.

Because this IVF journey is so heavy, I want to keep it small. This is my privacy and my process.

But recently she told me she had told all her friends about it. Because she finds it hard??

And she doesn’t like that people ask her every month if it worked and she has to say no.. She also told other family members.

I cried so hard afterwards.

The idea that at a family party with 80 people, people might know about my IVF without me choosing to tell them… it feels like my privacy is gone.

I texted her and said that it was up to me/us to decide who knowsand that she crossed a boundary.

I told her it gives me extra pressure. Her answer was:. “Sorry IF you find it hard. This is nothing to be ashamed of.”

She wants to call me now but I’m ignoring her calls. I feel betrayed, like she used my IVF story as her own.

My husband says he understands me, but that I should let it go because it’s a waste of my energy. AITA?

A private medical and emotional journey does not become public information just because someone else feels affected by it.

The OP’s frustration is not about IVF being something shameful. In fact, she clearly understands that there is nothing embarrassing about needing fertility treatment. The issue is that she lost control over her own story.

IVF can involve physical procedures, difficult emotions, uncertainty, and repeated disappointment. People handle that experience differently, and some choose to share widely for support. Others prefer to keep it limited to a trusted circle. Neither choice is wrong. The important part is that the person going through the treatment gets to decide.

The mother-in-law may genuinely feel stressed when people ask her questions or when she wants support from her own friends. However, the solution was not to share someone else’s medical information without permission. She could have talked about her own feelings without revealing details about OP’s fertility journey.

The response of “sorry if you find it hard” also adds another layer to the hurt. A sincere apology usually acknowledges the action that caused harm. Saying sorry only for the other person’s reaction can make it feel like their feelings are being dismissed rather than understood.

This situation also seems connected to a larger pattern. OP describes repeated moments where her mother-in-law centers herself during important life events. Whether intentional or not, those experiences may make this breach of privacy feel less like a single mistake and more like another example of her boundaries not being respected.

That does not mean the relationship cannot be repaired. A conversation may eventually help, especially if the mother-in-law can recognize that this was not about shame or secrecy. It was about consent and ownership of personal information.

OP’s husband’s point about protecting her energy is understandable. IVF is already emotionally exhausting, and ongoing conflict can add more stress. But letting go of anger does not mean pretending a boundary was not crossed. Sometimes taking space before having another conversation is a reasonable way to process hurt.

OP is not asking her mother-in-law to feel nothing or to have no support system. She is asking for the basic respect of being allowed to share her own story when she is ready.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters criticized the husband for failing to defend OP and enforce boundaries

DenizenKay − your husband is choosing the middle where he doesn't have to put his foot down to enact consequences for his mother.

you have a husband problem here, lady. He needs to grow a spine and tear a strip off his mom for making something

thats already hard, even harder and for spreading your personal news around like its her right. NTA.

but your husband and his mom sure are - him more so because its HIS responsibility to have shut this down long ago.

If i were you i'd never tell her another word about your IVF again and demand your husband do the same if he cares about you in this at all.

His daughter is watching her dad not stick up for her mom - hell of a s__tty thing for a daddy to teach his daughter- that when she's married,

her feelings stop being important, and it's a 'waste of energy' to stick up for herself or expect her spouse to.

SeniorEngineer2392 − NTA. Your husband needs to shut her down.

justtirediguess11 − NTA. But your husband is. Why isn't he talking to his own mother? Why can't he keep her in check? Why is he letting you down like this?

You shouldn't have had to message MIL. Your husband should have done it himself and also called her to tell her off.

It's not MIL problem entirely, it's husband problem too.

toyodditiescollector − Nta. But your husband needs to call his mom and ask for his testicles back.

These commenters advised limiting personal information shared with the mother-in-law

SlinkyMalinky20 − NTA. She’s never going to change if there’s never a consequence for her actions.

Please do not tell her anything personal again. Assume that she will be the town crier with any information.

When she centers things bout your children, quietly and clearly say, “we don’t need to look further than me for the curls” or whatever.

Don’t give it oxygen but don’t let her or your husband decide or define how you react to her. But also stop giving her access. She can’t be trusted with...

PhillipGOes − NTA. Leave her out of the information loop going forward which probably means your father-in-law as well.

Sounds like your husband will understand and support that decision. Tell even fewer people than you currently do, to keep it from spreading.

The more people you tell, leaks are inevitable. Privacy within extended families is often hard to protect.

Big-Squirrel-8994 − I’m so sorry and I can completely relate.

My MIL showed no interest in my fertility journey, surgeries, difficult pregnancy, but when baby arrived big Facebook announcement

SHE was a grandma and a picture of my son.

This was whilst I was still recovery mere minutes post birth in intensive care and hadn’t had a chance to let my wider family know.

Absolute main character energy, all I can suggest is ensure you’re not railroaded further and only share on a need to know basis

These users argued the MIL’s apology was insufficient and accountability was needed

brentwoodbreeder − NTA. IVF is your private medical information, not her family update to share.

Her “sorry if” response shows she still doesn’t understand the issue—you’re not ashamed, you’re angry that she took away your choice.

Your husband needs to stop asking you to “let it go” and clearly tell his mother she crossed a serious boundary.

Until she can offer a real apology and respect your privacy, taking space is completely reasonable.

I would also add, please be kind to yourself. It’s too much to take.

PanicAtTheGaslight − F__k her and f__k your husband. She shared YOUR personal and private medical information without your consent.

And she’s not sorry about it. Do NOT speak to her unless you want to. And it’s fine if that time is years away.

And the thing you need to take away from this is that she CANNOT be trusted with your personal information.

Lay down the law with your husband, because his attitude is not OK. He needs to be on your side.

He needs to realize that YOUR private medical information is just that…yours! You and only you get to decide whom you share that information with.

If he can’t be trusted to protect your information, then he doesn’t get to have that information either and then you obviously have much bigger problems.

I’d consider marriage counseling to work through this with your husband, but don’t you dare be coerced into letting this go. NTA

bythebrook88 − And she doesn’t like that people ask her every month if it worked and she has to say no.

If she hadn't opened her big mouth in the first place, she wouldn't be asked this question every month!

Was ignoring the calls a reasonable pause, or should the poster hear her out? What role should her husband play now? Share the hot takes below.
