Brother Trashes Every Home He Gets, Then Demands His Sister Fund His Lifestyle

Some people ask for help when they are struggling. Others demand a complete lifestyle upgrade from anyone willing to tolerate their behavior.

The difference often becomes clear when boundaries are finally introduced.

The original poster (OP) never expected her own brother to make such extreme demands after being kicked out of multiple homes for causing damage.

After refusing to work or take responsibility for his situation, he decided OP’s home was his next solution.

But instead of simply asking for a temporary place to stay, he presented a list of demands that included free housing, food, transportation, vacations, and even entertainment expenses.

Read on to see how OP handled his shocking sense of entitlement.

Woman refuses to let her irresponsible brother move in after his past behavior and extreme demands

Brother Trashes Every Home He Gets, Then Demands His Sister Fund His Lifestyle
not the actual photo

'My brother wants to live in my house rent free?'

He [M36] was kicked out of my [F34] parents house for trashing it and generally being very disrespectful.

My aunt let him move into their tiny home for about 2 months that they had in their

backyard and he trashed that as well. They went to check on something in there and saw

that he had destroyed the carpets, stained the walls, broken the counter tops, and some

door hinges. I honestly don’t know how he did so much damage on his own, he never had

any visitors as he’s kind of a loner.. Well they kicked him out as well and had to spend

thousands of dollars to get everything fixed.

Now he wants to live at my place since my husband and I have a guest bedroom. He doesn’t

have a job and refuses to get one.

The kicker is how entitled he feels to my life style. He said I HAD to let him live rent free,

my husband and I had to pay for his all his groceries, pay for any time he wants to order

delivery, I have to drive him wherever he wants since he doesn’t have a car, I have to pay for

his cell phone bill, we need to take him on any vacations we go on, and last but not least,

pay for his monthly WoW subscription. Then he “graciously” offered to write up the contract himself.

I practically laughed at him and told him absolutely not. He can get a job, find his own living

arrangements and pay for his own s__t. He said I was being selfish and that as his “rich”

sister (Im not rich) I owe it to him.

Now he’s telling our whole family about how I abandoned him and how I’m the worst sister

ever. He even tried calling my best friend to try to make them turn on me.. Not a single

family or friend believes his b__lshit and support my decision.

Many people struggle with the idea that saying “no” to family can feel cruel, even when the request is unreasonable.

The strongest emotional conflicts often happen when love, guilt, and responsibility become mixed together, making people question whether protecting their own peace means abandoning someone else.

In this situation, the OP is not simply refusing to help a struggling sibling.

She is responding to a long pattern of behavior where her brother has damaged other people’s property, avoided responsibility, and expected others to absorb the consequences.

The emotional weight comes from the family connection: he is not a stranger asking for help, but someone she grew up with.

However, his expectation that she should provide housing, food, transportation, entertainment, and financial support transforms a request for temporary assistance into a demand for a completely different person to manage his life.

A different perspective is that the brother may not view his demands as unreasonable because he has likely become accustomed to others rescuing him.

When people repeatedly avoid consequences, they can begin to interpret basic boundaries as personal attacks.

From his point of view, the OP’s refusal may feel like rejection.

From the OP’s perspective, it is a necessary step to avoid becoming another person responsible for problems she did not create.

The conflict is not really about a bedroom; it is about whether one adult should be expected to sacrifice their stability to protect another adult from the results of their own choices.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s decision is reasonable.

She is not refusing help because her brother is facing difficulties; she is refusing to become his replacement for personal responsibility.

Offering limited support, such as helping him search for employment or resources, would be different from accepting a permanent role as his provider.

The brother’s attempt to involve extended family and friends also shows how difficult boundaries can be when someone is used to getting their way.

Sometimes people who lose access to one source of support try to create pressure through guilt or public sympathy.

Ultimately, family does not mean unlimited obligation.

Caring about someone does not require allowing them to damage your home, finances, or emotional well-being.

Real support sometimes means refusing to enable harmful patterns and allowing another adult the chance to finally take ownership of their own life.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters supported OP’s decision and argued that the brother must learn independence instead of relying on family

SheiB123 − Excellent! ANYONE who says you should support him is welcome to have him

move into their home. HOW did he get to be so old without learning that you have to

support yourself?

JMarchPineville − Hold firm and do NOT give in. If he wants free room and board and

entertainment, they have all of that in jail 😉

Aspect_Basic − If you're looking for validation from anonymous strangers for your decision

to not let your brother freeload, you got it from THIS anonymous stranger!

Dismal_Value8874 − Finally a story where the family are actually supporting the right person!

These commenters suspected deeper issues behind the brother’s behavior and warned that allowing him to move in could create serious problems

rednail64 − He’s on drugs.  That’s why he’s destroying things and can’t hold a job.   You did

the right thing.

lusotano − I moved to a bigger home earlier this year. I have a room that right now has no

furniture. My older brother who is an a__oholic and isn't able to pay off his bills, told me

right away he can come live with us because I had the room.

I felt no remorse in saying right away I have got no room or intentions to have him move in.

He didn't like it. I didn't feel bad one bit. I saw how he was living under my parents roof and

the problems he was creating. OP, it isn't worth it.

If you have a marriage this will also create all sorts of problems between you and your

spouse. Also, if you have smaller kids, this will be an example for them to learn from. From

the way you are describing your sibling, looks like he likes to live off from being a leech.

Re-think your relationship if necessary, until they are ready to help themselves, you don't

need to help them. They will just be using you until that day comes.

These commenters mocked the brother’s unrealistic demands and suggested responding with firm rejection and boundaries

2cents0fucks − "He said I HAD to let him live rent free, my husband and I had to pay for his

all his groceries, pay for any time he wants to order delivery, I have to drive him wherever

he wants since he doesn’t have a car, I have to pay for his cell phone bill, we need to take

him on any vacations we go on, and last but not least, pay for his monthly WoW subscription.

Then he “graciously” offered to write up the contract himself. " "That's cute. But no. " "He

said I was being selfish and that as his “rich” sister (Im not rich) I owe it to him. " "I'm not

rich: I'm employed and self-sufficient; you should try it.

And the only people I owe are myself and my husband, to not allow ourselves to be used by

a mannerless, destructive, overgrown manchild. You owe it to yourself to get your own

s__t in order, but I wash my hands of you. "

CaptainLucid420 − Ask him to write up the contract then take it out to the front yard and p__s on it.

The OP’s brother has burned through every place that offered him help, leaving behind damaged homes and unpaid responsibilities.

After being kicked out by their parents and aunt for destroying property, he expected his sister to provide him with a free home, transportation, food, entertainment, and even his gaming expenses.

When she refused, he accused her of being selfish and tried to turn the family against her.

Was the OP wrong for refusing to enable his behavior, or should family always step in when someone is struggling?
