26-Year-Old Says Work Feels Unbearable, Then Wonders How Everyone Else Keeps Going

in Social Issues

Many people spend years searching for a career that feels meaningful, only to discover that work can sometimes feel more like a responsibility than a passion. While some people find purpose in their jobs, others simply learn how to separate their work from the rest of their lives and keep going for the things that matter outside of it.

The original poster (OP) is struggling to understand how so many people wake up every day and continue working jobs they dislike.

At 26, OP feels trapped in a career that drains them emotionally and wonders if everyone else has figured out a secret they somehow missed. Read on to see how Reddit users responded to this deeply personal question about work, purpose, and finding a way forward.

A person struggles to understand how others tolerate unfulfilling jobs and feels overwhelmed by the pressure of working life

not the actual photo

'I'm genuienly baffled at how people can get up and go to work and not want to k__l themselves everyday'

A job is a job and money is money, I get it to some degree because what is the other option?

But for the life of me I cannot understand how can majority of people not like their jobs and still do them?

Is it not gut wrenching to be stuck doing something you do not enjoy until you die for 40-50 hours a week?

I cannot bring myself to be okay with what I do and feel like vomiting every single day when I clock in.

I cannot understand how this became the standard and how can people even manage it?

I don't know what I'm missing and it feels like everyone else knows something I don't. I'm 26, but I don't feel like it.

I feel like a 20 year old who doesn't get it. And I don't. Any yes, maybe I am depressed.

It feels like that is the default because how can you not be? I worked so so so hard my entire life for what? What was it for?

To be in a field I do not like, to work in a place with horrible people, to not even want to get up in the morning?

I like my life other than the work but the work part is so disgusting to me that I can't think of anything else.

I don't have it in me to do something else. I don't even know what something else would be. How can anyone do anything? It doesn't make sense at all.

Many people spend years learning how to survive, but not always how to feel alive. The realization that a large part of adulthood is spent working can feel overwhelming, especially when someone wakes up every morning feeling disconnected from what they do.

The OP’s frustration is not simply about disliking a job. It reflects a deeper fear that life is passing by while they are stuck performing a role that does not feel meaningful.

The emotional weight of this story comes from the gap between expectation and reality. The OP worked hard believing that effort would eventually lead to a fulfilling life, yet they now feel trapped in a career that causes dread instead of satisfaction.

Seeing other people continue with jobs they dislike creates even more confusion because it appears as though everyone else has accepted a reality that feels unbearable to them. Underneath the anger and disbelief is a sense of grief: mourning the life they imagined they would have after years of trying.

A different perspective is that many people are not necessarily happier with their work; they have simply developed different relationships with it. Some people view a job primarily as a source of stability, allowing them to find meaning through family, friendships, hobbies, or personal goals outside of work.

Others need their career to provide identity and purpose, making a misaligned job feel much more painful. Neither approach is wrong, but the difference explains why one person can tolerate a routine that another person experiences as emotionally exhausting.

The OP’s intense reaction may also point toward burnout rather than simply ordinary dissatisfaction. Psychologists explain that burnout often involves emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feeling disconnected from one’s work.

Psychologist Lybi Ma, writing for Psychology Today, describes burnout as a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, often connected to feeling a lack of control, support, or alignment between responsibilities and personal values.

This perspective changes how we view the OP’s struggle. The problem may not be that they are unwilling to “grow up” or that everyone else has discovered some secret to adulthood.

They may be experiencing a situation where their daily environment conflicts deeply with their values. When work becomes a constant source of anxiety, the solution is not always forcing oneself to tolerate it better.

Sometimes it requires examining what specifically feels unbearable: the workplace, the career path, the lack of control, the people, or the absence of meaning.

At the same time, it is important to remember that a fulfilling life rarely appears as one perfect career choice. Many people build satisfying lives by making gradual changes rather than dramatic escapes. A different role, new skill, side project, or clearer boundary can sometimes create movement when everything currently feels impossible.

The OP’s question about how people keep going is one many adults quietly ask. The answer is often not that they love every moment of work. It is that they have found enough reasons, inside or outside their jobs, to keep moving forward while searching for something better.

The challenge is not accepting misery as normal; it is finding a path where work becomes one part of life rather than the thing that consumes it.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters shared frustration with work culture and feeling trapped in unfulfilling careers.

Wrong_Lab7714 − I'm 27 and I feel the same. I got a degree and found a job in something I used to like, because people saying you'll enjoy working like...

That's b__lshit I hate my job and it doesn't matter where I will work, everywhere is dreading and taking 40-50 hours a week. This is nightmare.

And once our parents could work to afford new furniture or a small home. Today?

I can't afford a vacation and I'm spending most of my money on therapy and sports so I do drown myself in my depression.

I feel like most of our generation think the same and it became unbearable to survive like that

shuppetupyoass − I honestly resonate with this. Everyone in my life pushed me to study towards a degree that I actually ended up hating.

I thought the work would be better than the studying but it has been worse for me.

I am only 25 and I just have no idea how people can do this kind of thing for the rest of their lives

BlueSpotBingo − I haven’t found joy in labor for well over 15 years.

I’m soon to be out of work (involuntarily) and searching for jobs has been a slog.

I read these job descriptions and that alone are enough to make me depressed.

I just cannot bring myself to continue this s__t. Humans were not meant to toil like this. I truly believe that.

These users argued people continue working because responsibilities and survival needs leave few alternatives

thornyrosary − You do it because you don't have a choice. This morning, I'm getting ready for a job I've held for a decade.

My makeup and hair will be nicely done, my clothing choices will be impeccable, my mannerisms will be above the tongue of reproach.

Inwardly, I'll be seething.

I have to begrudgingly give 8 hours a day of my life, just to be able to afford to live the rest of the time.

But I like being able to eat, I like having a place to live, I like being able to afford to take a vacation. And I like being able to...

So I don the nice clothes, I brush my hair, and I go to a place where a larger entity rents my brain for 8 hours a day.

The alternative is to starve, my friend. If you're going to work, at least do something you enjoy.

ContractorBk201 − Being homeless as a kid and then again as an adult later on taught me how bad it can really be.

The alternative right now is horrible enough that people just tough it out.

Especially when you have people relying on you like I do, they need me to do this day in and out and I love them.

I would do anything for them and I mean that so I go in everyday and thank god for it.

Jeffster54 − Responsibilities usually take over.

The other options are finding a job you like, working even harder in building a business so you retire earlier, or becoming a nomad?

These commenters described burnout, dissatisfaction, and struggling to find meaning in corporate jobs

WolfCola4 − You said it man, it's how a lot of us are feeling all the time. I'm in my early 30s, making good money in a respectable job.

I'm sitting in my office right now with the door closed, my team are out working in the main office and I'm just scrolling on Reddit bored out of my...

I lurch from panic attack to apathy to not knowing wtf I'm supposed to be doing.

This can't be what I was put on this earth to do, but I have people counting on me,

so I just put one foot in front of the other every day. We're all just faking it my friend.

Bobbsen − Well, yes. I’m in my early 30s and the feeling doesn’t go away much.

I found something that I can bear with that I don’t find particularly interesting, but at least I’m good at it.

Eventually reduced hours so I have a 4-day workweek to make it bearable.

I’m also taking some further qualifying exams to be able to run my own business in 1-2 years to at least work for myself. But corporate life is f__king b__lshit.

These users criticized modern economic systems and questioned why people struggle despite abundant resources

ChickinSammich − I've already died once and been brought back. There was nothing on the other side; it was just like going to sleep - your consciousness just stops.

I think a lot of religions sell the idea that there's some reincarnation or afterlife or something on the other side of all this suffering

to get people to behave and be good so they'll be rewarded for their suffering,

but once you realize you're not suffering *for* anything and that there's no reward for it, it really pivots your outlook.

This life is the only one we have.

And we have advanced our technology enough that we can provide housing for everyone, food for everyone, clothing for everyone.

There isn't just enough for everyone, there's so much that we throw things away

because we overproduce and we design things to break down so people buy new ones.

There's so much that we design tchotchkes people don't want or need - like little gifts people buy, give away, and immediately get thrown in the trash.

Or trading card games that produce multiple 200-300 card sets per year where 50-75% of the set is unplayable garbage. Or single use plastic *anything*.

And how do we afford all the stuff we don't need?

By dedicating, on average, 5ish days per week, 40ish hours per week to producing goods and services for a company that,

in turn, provides those goods and services to other people, other companies, or other organizations.

And we do this because western society has decided that if you don't want to dedicate that time - plus your unpaid morning commute,

because how dare you want to work from home when we spend this money on this cubicle for you to sit in - to a company,

then you don't deserve a house or clothing or food.

And, honestly, I could live without the clothing (if it weren't literally a crime)

but I'm kinda accustomed to the house (and, depending on where you live, not having that could be a crime)

and my body has developed an addiction to the food (which isn't a crime to not have, but *is* a crime to steal).

I guess I could play "splish, splash, toaster bath" on any given day. But, as I covered in the beginning - there's nothing on the other side of this.

And, what's worse, I could survive and then be saddled with the medical debt.

Not to mention the pain and anguish that would put on the loved ones I'd leave behind.

Being alive kinda sucks but I really don't actually want to be dead.

And so, five days a week, I set an alarm to get up earlier than I'm ready for, put some clothes on, get in my car,

spend 45 minutes wishing I didn't have to share the road with people who drive like they're trying to k__l you,

and then spend the next 9 hours of my day in a cubicle, all so I can earn money and keep paying my monthly fees for the house,

the gas and electric, the water, the food, and the ability to access content libraries full of TV shows they'll cancel abruptly

when they stop being profitable enough, because a large part of humanity determines my worth by whether *I'm* profitable enough.

All while people who have more than enough money to retire today if they wanted to spend their time figuring out who they can fire and

how they can make the products and services worse for all of us so that their bloated bank accounts get bigger.

Like I said... the only thing that keeps me going some days is that for as much as this life sucks, it's still the only one I've got.

Designer_Might3395 − I think push will come to shove in a few years. Humanity is at its limit.

Especially those working and still can't afford anything. The elites will be battered and deep fried with a side of fries and a milkshake.

Should the poster seek a different career, a shorter schedule, or professional support before making major decisions? Can a job remain “just a job” when it dominates someone’s mental health? Share thoughtful perspectives below.
