Aunt Refused To Take Time Off For Her Niece, And Her Sister Didn’t Like The Reason Why

Family vacations can create complicated expectations, especially when one person assumes others will rearrange their schedules to make the visit special. Wanting to spend time with a loved one is understandable, but so is wanting that effort to be appreciated and respected.

The original poster (OP) wants to spend time with their niece during her summer visit, but they no longer want to take unpaid time off after previous experiences where plans were changed at the last minute.

When OP offered their only available day off, they were accused of not making enough effort because the niece was “on vacation.” Read on to find out how Reddit viewed this family disagreement over time, effort, and boundaries.

A woman refuses to take unpaid time off for her niece’s vacation after years of canceled plans leave her feeling unappreciated

'AITAH because I won't take time off for my nieces vacation?'

My sister sends her daughter, my niece. To my other sister's house for a few weeks, every summer. My sister lives over an hour away.

This year, I explained, to my nieces mother, I won't be able to play taxi or coordinator.

I also mentioned that I am off Mondays and hope that we can either go to the beach or some other options.

My niece said, I don't know, I am going to be really busy. I said, okay, I hope to see you but Mondays are the only day I can do...

My sister said, My nieces mother said, I am being ridiculous and she is on vacation. I should take time off for my niece..

I said, yes, I agree but the last few years, I do take off and then I am told, " no can do, I am doing this instead." My time...

I dont get paid. So, I would love to spend time with her but on my day off. If she makes plans to do other stuff, that is okay.

Its her vacation but I am not going to take time off to do it again. I did warn you last year when it happened again. I was going to...

There is a long history of my sister, her mother, canceling plans on me when I had plans with my niece so she could do things with other people.

I hope she enjoys her time here and that I get time to see her.. .

Time is one of the few things people cannot get back, which is why repeated disappointments can turn even loving gestures into sources of frustration.

The OP’s situation is not really about refusing to spend time with a niece. It is about feeling that their effort and availability have been treated as optional for years. Wanting to be involved in a child’s life and wanting that effort to be respected can exist at the same time.

The emotional conflict here comes from a mismatch in expectations. The OP appears willing and excited to spend time with their niece, but they no longer want to rearrange their work schedule and lose income for plans that may later be canceled.

From the sister’s perspective, she may see the summer visit as a special opportunity and feel that family should make sacrifices to create memories. However, from the OP’s perspective, the issue is not one missed vacation activity. It is a repeated pattern where they make sacrifices, only to find out that their time was not prioritized.

A different perspective is that family members sometimes confuse availability with obligation. Because the OP loves their niece, others may assume they will always adjust their schedule.

But generosity works best when it is voluntary. When someone repeatedly gives up time, money, or personal plans without feeling appreciated, resentment can eventually replace the joy that originally motivated them.

Psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner, known for her work on family relationships and boundaries, explains that healthy boundaries help people maintain relationships by preventing hidden resentment from building.

She emphasizes that saying no to certain requests does not mean someone cares less; it can mean they are trying to create a healthier and more sustainable relationship.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s decision is not necessarily a rejection of their niece. In fact, setting this limit may protect the relationship. The OP is still offering time, just within realistic boundaries. They are saying, “I want to be part of your life, but I cannot keep sacrificing my own responsibilities for plans that may not happen.”

The niece’s comment that she will be “really busy” also adds another layer. A vacation should be enjoyable for everyone involved, including the child. If she has other activities she wants to prioritize, that is understandable. But it also means the OP should not be expected to take unpaid time off simply to remain available in case there is a free moment.

The healthiest family relationships are built on mutual consideration. Love does not require someone to constantly prove their commitment through sacrifice. Sometimes the most caring choice is creating a clear boundary so that future time together feels special instead of forced.

The OP is not saying, “I do not want to see my niece.” They are saying, “I want the time we spend together to matter.” That distinction is important. A relationship built on respect will usually survive a reasonable boundary. A relationship that depends on endless flexibility may need to be reconsidered.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors agreed OP shouldn’t rearrange work for someone else’s vacation plans

Vegetable-Cod-2340 − NTA Why would you be required to take time off ‘just in case ‘ they want to spend time with you? !?!

That’s ridiculously entitled.

Anxious-Routine-5526 − NTA. *She's* on vacation, not you. *She* has more flexibility because she's on vacation.

If she can't/won't use that flexibility to make it possible to meet up, you don't meet up.

AtheneSchmidt − NTA, maybe I'm wrong, but usually the person on vacation plans around the person *not* on vacation.

And having you take time of just to cancel on you is incredibly rude.

These commenters pointed out confusion around which sister was changing plans and wanted more details

BirdCatLizard − NTA - but it sounds like your sister won't be prioritizing you, so I wouldn't expect to see her on Monday

Kind_Ad_3336 − Im confused as to which sister said you were ridiculous and which sister always changes plans.

Is this the same sister, your niece’s mom? Is the second sister just where they stay when they’re on vacation?

judgingA-holes − INFO: You should put fake names. Who is the "she" that is making plans to do other stuff?

IDK how old the niece is so I'm unsure if it's the niece or if it's the aunt that she's staying with that has the plans.

You say your sister says it's ridiculous and she's on vacation, is that her mother saying that or the aunt that she's staying with?

These users supported OP setting boundaries after repeated cancellations and wasted time

Distinct_Cap4622 − NTA why would you let someone dictate your life.

She's screwed you over in the past, costing you money and wasting your time, no is a whole sentence.

IceDragonPlay − NTA The sister that is hosting your niece seems to be inconsiderate of your availability.

Nothing wrong with you saying you will visit on Mondays IF they want to plan things with you that don’t subsequently get cancelled.

grayblue_grrl − Sounds like your only "purpose" is to be of use to your sister. Enjoy your summer and your Mondays off. NTA

FrontenacRacer − What is the deal with nieces. They're not immediate family and IMHO, unless you raised her, they don't rate this kind of obligation.

You've introduced a reasonable boundary. It's up to them to accept it.

They'll throw a tantrum, of course, because you're limiting the cookies you are willing to give them.

Don't back down. No matter how much they try to guilt you.

Be the iron fist in the velvet glove. Anytime they come back at you, no matter who's support they elicit,

simply restate your position and go on about your business. They'll ultimately get the message. They'll have no choice.

Should the poster protect every Monday without further effort, or choose one firm date with a cancellation deadline? How many broken plans should family loyalty be expected to finance?
