Woman Let Her Sister Live Rent-Free, Then Asked Her To Leave After She Refused To Help

Family members helping each other can be a wonderful support system, but problems often appear when an arrangement that started as temporary quietly turns into a long-term expectation. When boundaries are unclear, both sides can begin feeling taken for granted.

The original poster (OP) invited her younger sister into her home during a difficult period, offering financial support, transportation, and a place to recover after an abusive relationship.

However, after two years, OP feels frustrated because the original agreement has changed and her sister no longer contributes to the household while also pushing back on childcare responsibilities. Read on to find out how Reddit weighed in on this complicated family situation involving support, gratitude, and boundaries.

A woman considers asking her sister to leave after years of free housing turn into conflict over childcare expectations and family responsibilities

'AITH for asking my sister to move out after she ignored our agreement?'

A little background story. I (27F) married my husband (32M). Have two kids (11F) and (2M).

Two years ago I asked my little sister who was 20 at the time and she will turn 22 in a month to come live with us and help out...

She was in an ab**** relationship she needed a place to stay. At first it was for her to get back on her feet since shes getting out of the...

The initial thing was that we will pay her $200/ week to watch our 4 months old at the time( M-F 6:30am till 2pm)

and she could use my car anytime she needed to and she wanted an afternoon job that was totallyfine, she happily accepted.

A month had passed and she told her shes getting depressed being inside every day she can't do this anymore.

I told her that's ok her mental health is very important.

But she should be able to watch the kids when we need her to like date night, ect... found someone else to watch our kid.

Fast forward two years later, she works full time, doesn't pay any bills, doesn't help around the house,

not even washing the dishes or take out the trash or cook dinner or even buy groceries or things the house needs. Like no help at all.

Last week my husband and I went out for a bit, mind you we asked her the weekend before if she could watch the kids and she said yes.

Within an hour of us being out. My husband and I received this:

'i just want to say this to get this off my chest this isnt an attack and this isnt me being ungrateful i just want you guys to try to...

and my point of view is that i don’t appreciate being used as a service whenever it’s convenient for yall, i understand this is “all im good for “

but there are some days where i dont want to come home after a 9 hour shift and watch a baby. i didnt decide to have children.

you guys did . and the only person who ever appreciates me for it and only thanks me for it is (my husband)

so it has been building up inside me and causing resentment that my own sister will refuse to recognize my accomplishments

because its “what im supposed to do” i appreciate staying here rent free and ive appreciated the opportunity being given to me

but i dont feel like i should dedicate my life to you guys. its like now im being asked to watch the kids like its already a given and that

its not something i can ever say no to because when i do say no im treated like voldemort.

it feels like an obligation when it should feel like a choice. i felt like the time frame should have been more discussed

because i was under the impression i was watching him till 630 not 930 .

thank you for taking the time to read this again im not attacking i just want to ask for more clarity."

At this point, that is all she's good for watching the kids for us for a few hours once or twice a week.

And the accomplishment she's referring to is getting her high school diploma at the age of 21

because she dropped out of school a few months before graduating. She still uses my car when needed to go to her BF house or work.

At this point I am fed up and just can't take it anymore.

My husband tells me she is my sister and I need to handle it and he is tired of taking care of a grown as adult.

So would i be the AH if i ask her to leave my house since she refuses to watch the kids when needed?

I know that is long but feel free to ask any questions.

Helping family through a difficult moment is often an act of love, but love can become complicated when temporary support slowly turns into an expectation.

The OP’s situation is not simply about childcare. It is about a favor that began with compassion but gradually became an arrangement where one person feels relied upon and the other feels taken for granted.

The emotional conflict comes from two different interpretations of the living arrangement. The OP believed she was offering her sister a safe place to recover while receiving some practical help in return. Her sister appears to feel that the arrangement changed from support into an ongoing responsibility she never fully agreed to.

From her perspective, being asked to watch the children after working a full day may feel like an obligation. From the OP’s perspective, however, the issue is that the original agreement was never properly reset. The sister stopped providing regular childcare but continued receiving the benefits of the arrangement: housing, transportation access, and financial support.

A different perspective is that both sisters may be carrying valid emotions, but the imbalance is what created resentment. The younger sister escaped an abusive relationship and likely needed stability, so the OP’s initial offer was meaningful. However, recovery support and permanent dependence are very different things.

When someone receives help for a long period without contributing in other ways, the person providing that help can begin feeling more like a caretaker than a sibling.

Family therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab, author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace, explains that boundaries are necessary in relationships because they clarify what people can realistically give without creating resentment. She emphasizes that boundaries are not punishments; they are a way to maintain healthier relationships by making expectations clear.

This perspective helps explain why the OP feels exhausted. The problem is not that her sister does not want to babysit every single time. A person should be allowed to have limits, especially after work. The deeper issue is that the entire arrangement appears to have continued without a new agreement.

The sister gained independence through employment while still depending on the OP’s household, but the responsibilities she originally agreed to were no longer happening.

At the same time, the sister’s message reveals something important. She does not seem to view herself as refusing to help; she feels unseen and unappreciated. The OP may benefit from separating two issues: acknowledging her sister’s progress and struggles while also being clear that support cannot continue without mutual contribution.

Asking her to move out does not necessarily mean abandoning her. It may actually be the step that allows both sisters to rebuild a healthier relationship. Continuing an arrangement filled with frustration and resentment could damage their bond more than creating a reasonable transition plan.

The strongest family relationships are not built on one person endlessly sacrificing. They are built when people can help each other while still respecting each other’s limits. Support is meaningful when it is freely given, not when one person feels trapped and the other feels entitled to receive it.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors encouraged OP to maintain the deadline and avoid letting the arrangement become permanent

Lamberly − NTA. If you extend the deadline once, they're just going to keep pushing you to extend it every single time.

You gave reasonable boundaries on a very generous offer, don't let them question yourself

ImmediateEscape31 − Stick to your guns. Also, if family helps family, your parents have a house she can live in.

oldleolady71 − Stick to the plan before she gets too comfortable.

As of now she’s just another person for you to pay for and clean up after. Let her go live at mom’s.

These commenters argued that the sister has taken advantage of free housing and should be responsible for moving out

2mankyhookers − So she gets free rent , free utilities and free food . .. and you are asking if you are being too strict ?

NTA , you are being taken advantage of , and you don't need strangers to tell you that.

Rabt_FTS − NTA. She was treating your house like a teenage dependent and she's not your child.

She's had 4 months to save up for a place with little to no outside expenses. If she doesn't have the money by now, what did she spend it on?

REMwoman70 − She’s had four months to get her own place.

Plenty of time, especially since she wasn’t wasting any of her time keeping up her end of your agreement.

These users suggested setting firm conditions or having the sister find another place to live

aaseandersen − Tell your parents that you would have been more than willing to help further if these last six months had not felt like

living with a spoiled and ungrateful teenager. Its time for her to grow up and trash her own place. Serve her with an official eviction. NTA.

putuffala − NTA. Your parents should not be contributing opinions without contributing to the mortgage/utilities/feeding of their daughter.

I’d sit down and consider what terms (if any) would make me willing to continue to host a selfish freeloader.

Id tell her those terms and she can agree or leave. Maybe give her a month to find a place or move in with your opinionated parents.

fpuk69 − If she was still out of work then that would be harsh but she’s got a job so can afford to move out

If your parents want to get involved then they can help her with a deposit or first months rent for her own place

santana0987 − Squatter's rights. .. that's all I'm saying. And NTAH of course, OP.

STICK to your guns before she decides the move was permanent and you then will have to get the law involved

Should the younger sister contribute rent and chores while keeping babysitting optional, or has too much resentment already accumulated for shared living to continue?
