Sister-In-Law Unplugged His Security Camera, Then Panicked When He Mentioned Hidden Ones

Living with relatives can test even the strongest household boundaries, especially when someone begins treating another person’s home as though the rules are optional. Security devices may feel intrusive to some people, but homeowners usually expect them to stay exactly where they were installed.

The original poster (OP) had allowed his wife’s sister to live in their house for three years when a new camera triggered an unexpected argument. The device faced the back door, but the sister-in-law accused OP of spying and later unplugged it while the couple was away.

When she openly said she would disable it again, OP responded with a threat involving hidden cameras that sent her searching through the house. Read on to see whether Reddit found his warning clever, excessive, or a sign of a much bigger family problem.

A homeowner’s sister-in-law disables his security camera, then vows to do it again

'Sister in Law antics'

My wife's sister has been unfortunately living in my house for the last three years. I recently upgraded my home security with Ring.

The kit came with an extra camera so I plugged it in facing my back door. SIL saw it and lost her damned mind. Accused me of spying on her.

So we had a vacation planned and I felt like all my bases were covered back home when I received a notification that my camera was offline.

It's hard wired, and the wireless was still working, so I knew it had been unplugged.

We arrived home and, sure enough, it had been unplugged and turned around.

I told her to not disable my security camera and she snapped back that she doesn't like being spied on.

I told her that it's not watching her, it's monitoring my back door for security. Then she actually said she would do it again.

So, I casually dropped that if it did happen I would buy 10 hidden cameras and place them where she couldn't find them.

Empty threat, because my wife would throw a fit, but SIL doesn't know that. I can hear her in her room checking the closet and door frames...lmao.

Trust tends to unravel when people stop assuming good intentions. A home security camera can represent peace of mind for one person and an invasion of privacy for another. The disagreement in this story was never really about a small camera facing a back door. It became a conflict over control, boundaries, and whose expectations should prevail inside someone else’s home.

The emotional dynamic is understandable on both sides, at least initially. The OP installed a security system to monitor an exterior entrance, a common and reasonable use for home cameras. The sister-in-law, who has been living in the home for several years, apparently interpreted the device as surveillance directed at her.

Had she simply expressed discomfort and asked questions, the disagreement might have ended with reassurance. Instead, unplugging and turning the camera around while the homeowners were away transformed a conversation about privacy into one about trust.

Once she openly stated she would do it again, the issue shifted from misunderstanding to deliberately interfering with the home’s security.

A different perspective is that long-term guests can sometimes begin to feel psychologically like co-owners, even when they are not. After living somewhere for years, routines become familiar and boundaries can blur. The sister-in-law may genuinely feel that the house is partly her home, giving her a voice in decisions that affect her daily life.

Even so, feeling at home does not extend to disabling another person’s security equipment without permission. If privacy was her concern, the appropriate response was discussion and compromise, not unilateral action.

Psychologist Dr. Henry Cloud, co-author of Boundaries, argues that healthy relationships depend on clearly defining responsibilities and respecting what belongs to each person.

Strong boundaries are not about controlling others but about protecting one’s own responsibilities while recognizing that other people have authority over theirs. In shared living situations, this distinction becomes especially important because blurred boundaries often lead to repeated conflict rather than mutual respect.

Applied here, the OP had every reason to insist that the camera remain operational. At the same time, threatening to install “10 hidden cameras” escalated the conflict unnecessarily, even if it was meant as a bluff.

Humor can sometimes relieve tension, but in an already distrustful situation it is more likely to reinforce fears than encourage cooperation. A calmer response would have been to state that tampering with security equipment was unacceptable and that continued interference would require a serious discussion about living arrangements.

Ultimately, this situation highlights a broader challenge of extended family sharing a home. Privacy matters, but so does respecting the homeowner’s reasonable security measures.

The healthiest solution is not winning a battle over cameras. It is establishing clear expectations about what decisions belong to the homeowners and what concerns should be addressed through honest conversation instead of quiet acts of defiance.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors agreed the sister-in-law had overstayed her welcome and should be made to leave

Most-Artichoke6184 − Three years? Three weeks is too long.

goddessofspite − Why is she still there. Be clear with the wife if she stays you won’t.

These commenters urged OP to set firm boundaries, begin eviction if necessary, and make the issue non-negotiable.

ProfessionalBread176 − Your SIL needs to leave yesterday. I have a BIL like her. And my sister (his wife) refuses to enforce boundaries with him.

Further, get an armored enclosure for the camera so she can't mess with it. A glass (thick glass) box

davehal2001 − If you're in the US contact an attorney and start eviction proceedings. If your wife objects tell her this is non-negotiable.

I'm guessing SIL lives with you because no one else will tolerate her. You've been putting up with this *way* too long and I think you know it.

Puzzleheaded-Call351 − I'd be wondering what she's doing that she's worried about you finding out. Is she bringing in someone she shouldn't be?

These users criticized the sister-in-law’s entitlement and said the real issue was the lack of household boundaries

Truebeliever-14 − Your SIL is very entitled for someone who can’t afford a roof over her head.

CocoaAlmondsRock − You have a wife problem. She needs to get her sister under control -- and out of your house.

SCR_RAC − You have bigger problems than cameras if your sister in law has been living in your house for 3 tears. Sounds like she is running the place.

These commenters emphasized that OP has the right to enforce house rules and remove an uncooperative guest

YouCanShoveYourMagic − Your house, your rules. She can leave if she didn't like it. If she unplugs it again you can ask her to leave.

If she doesn't pay rent then she is a guest and has no rights of tenancy so you could simply call the cops if she doesn't leave.

parodytx − Two words - Eviction Notice.

Is unplugging the camera enough to end a three-year living arrangement? Or should the couple first offer written privacy protections and one final opportunity to comply?
