Boyfriend Demands More Attention, Then Sends “Bare Minimum Girlfriend” TikToks While She’s Already Exhausted

in Social Issues

Small messages can expose much larger expectations inside a relationship. A social media clip may seem harmless, but when it repeatedly touches an existing source of tension, it can feel less like entertainment and more like a warning about the future.

The original poster (OP) cares deeply about her boyfriend but struggles to balance their relationship with her strong need for independence and quiet time. Between work, shared commutes, weeknight visits, and household tasks, she feels that nearly every free hour already belongs to someone else.

Her boyfriend still wants more attention and has started sending videos suggesting that a good girlfriend should cook, serve, and organize her life around her partner. OP now feels irritated, guilty, and increasingly nervous about moving in together. Read on to see whether Reddit viewed this as a communication problem or a sign of deeper incompatibility.

An introverted woman feels drained when her boyfriend demands more attention and sends “bare minimum girlfriend” videos

Boyfriend Demands More Attention, Then Sends “Bare Minimum Girlfriend” TikToks While She’s Already Exhausted
not the actual photo

'My 23F boyfriend 23M wants more of my time, but I feel like I barely have any left. Now he’s sending me “bare minimum girlfriend” TikToks'

I feel like I’m going slightly insane over this.

My boyfriend (23) and I (F23) have been together for a little over a year now. Overall, I absolutely adore him.

He’s smart, caring, handsome, I never have to worry about him in social situations and he’s genuinely a great guy.

As sad as it sounds, I don’t know if I’ve ever truly been in love with anyone, so I’m not even sure what that feeling is supposed to be like.

I am aware that I have a very avoidant attachment to people but I care about him deeply.

One thing is that I don’t find him particularly funny. I know that sounds horrible.

He laughs a lot, and we do have fun together, but I’m usually laughing at situations we end up in

or when he’s being unintentionally stupid rather than at his actual jokes. If anything, I think I’m probably the funnier one in the relationship.

The bigger issue is that I’m a huge introvert and I really value my alone time. I genuinely enjoy spending time with him,

but I also really look forward to going home and having my own space.

We commute to and from work together three days a week, so we usually spend those evenings together too.

The other two weekdays he works remotely, which means I realistically only get one evening completely to myself each week.

By the weekend, I often feel like I haven’t had enough time to mentally recharge.

It’s not that I don’t want to see him (I do) but I end up feeling drained because I never seem to get enough time alone.

When I do choose to spend a weekend focusing on my own hobbies (painting, drawing, playing video games),

he’ll sometimes complain that I’ve been sitting at my desk all day, don’t want to go out, or should be doing chores instead.

The frustrating part is that I often *can’t* get those chores done when he’s at my place because he mostly sits on his phone

and either I feel bad about not giving him attention or he complains that I’m not giving him enough attention.

It feels like I’m expected to either entertain him or ignore everything else I need to do.

Essentially, I have one evening after work each week to get all my chores done and try to mentally recharge before the next day,

I’ve managed to get the weekends to myself so at least I don’t have to leave my house then.

On top of that, I know I need to start working out because I’ve gained some weight, but with so little time to myself,

I end up prioritising the hobbies that actually help me unwind. It makes me feel guilty for wanting time alone, and honestly it’s becoming exhausting.

Now for the thing that’s actually driving me crazy.

Lately, he keeps sending me TikToks that are basically along the lines of “come cook my husband’s lunch with me at 5 a.m.”

or “things that are the bare minimum every girlfriend should be doing for her boyfriend.” Every single time I see one, I get irrationally angry.

Maybe it’s because we both work full-time. Maybe it’s because we don’t even live together yet, although we’re planning to move in together soon.

Whatever the reason, these videos make me feel like he’s trying to push some expectation

that I should be taking care of him in a way I have absolutely no interest in doing.

I genuinely don’t think anything he’s done in our entire relationship has irritated me more than these TikToks.

And because I’m already feeling drained by the lack of alone time and the comments about how I spend my free time, those videos hit a nerve every single time.

Do you think this is something that can be talked through?

Love can become exhausting when closeness leaves no room for either person to remain an individual. The OP clearly cares about her boyfriend, but affection does not eliminate her need for solitude, hobbies, chores, and mental recovery.

Her irritation is not appearing out of nowhere. It is building because the little free time she has increasingly feels monitored, negotiated, or treated as evidence that she is failing as a girlfriend.

The central emotional conflict is a mismatch in how the couple experiences connection. Her boyfriend may interpret frequent time together, focused attention, and practical acts of care as proof of commitment. She experiences those same expectations as pressure because commuting and spending several evenings together already consume much of her social energy.

When she finally paints, plays games, or handles responsibilities, he appears to experience her independence as rejection. She then feels guilty for resting, which turns time with him into another demand rather than a source of comfort.

A fresh perspective is that the TikToks may be indirect complaints disguised as entertainment. Instead of clearly saying what he needs, he sends videos defining a “bare minimum girlfriend,” allowing strangers online to deliver the criticism for him.

The cooking examples also suggest a gendered caregiving model she has no interest in adopting. Her anger may therefore be less about the videos themselves and more about the future they imply: living together while remaining responsible for his attention, meals, emotional reassurance, and perhaps most domestic work.

The Gottman Institute describes requests for attention and affection as “bids for connection.” Responding to those bids can strengthen emotional trust, but healthy connection also requires partners to express needs clearly rather than relying on criticism or indirect pressure.

Psychologist Sophia Dembling similarly explains that introverted partners may require solitude to recharge, while the other partner can mistakenly interpret that withdrawal as rejection. Compromise is possible only when both needs are treated as legitimate.

Applied here, the boyfriend is not wrong for wanting more connection, and the OP is not wrong for needing substantial time alone. The real test is whether he can hear “I need solitude” without translating it into “I do not love you,” and whether she can offer intentional time together without feeling permanently available.

They should not move in together until they agree on protected alone time, household labor, weekends, and what care actually means to each of them. She should also state plainly that the “bare minimum girlfriend” videos feel insulting and that she will not accept a traditional caretaker role.

This can be discussed, but compatibility matters as much as communication. A relationship cannot remain healthy if one person’s preferred level of closeness consistently feels like abandonment to the other and confinement to their partner.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors said the couple seems incompatible and warned against moving in together

After-Past-9404 − As a fellow introvert, let me tell you one thing:

Your partner is supposed to be one of the very few people whose presence does not feel draining to you.

Sure, having time alone to be your own person is valid and important as well.

But if you feel you need that time alone just because you need to recover from being with him.

.. I would start reconsidering whether he is the right person for you.

psyfuck − Why are you planning on moving in together when you require alone time and he seems deadset on not giving you any and then guilting you about it?

What alone time do you think you will ever get if you live together?

After-Distribution69 − No I think you’re essentially incompatible and it would be wisest to end it now.

A relationship should not take over your life and it should make you a better version of your true self.

He wants to turn you into a different person entirely.  That’s not healthy for him or you.  Time to call it a day

These commenters urged OP to end the draining relationship and enjoy her twenties.

rose-buds − you’re only 23, you’ve only been together a year. he drains you, you don’t find him funny, and the tiktoks (rightfully) made you upset.

at 34, all i can think is, why would you ever blow your twenties and move in with this guy? break up! !!

you are not 20 years into a marriage. you’re in a 1 year relationship where you aren’t happy.

end it. live your life. he will be fine and you will be too.

Aladdin_Caine − Don't move in with this man - his quality of life will go up 100% and yours will go down 2000% Start sending him equivalent better boyfriend tik...

Revolutionary_Ad1846 − His TikToks have infuriated me.

Keep in mind the women who are making their husbands lunch at 5 am are doing so bc they don’t work.

Their husband is the bread winner and this is how they show the gratitude / support him.

Your bf doesn’t want a partner but a bangmaid/court jester. Girl, break up. You are NOT compatible.

These users said her anger was reasonable because the TikToks felt manipulative

ShimmeringNothing − "Lately, he keeps sending me TikToks that are basically along the lines of “come cook my husband’s lunch with me at 5 a. m. ”

or “things that are the bare minimum every girlfriend should be doing for her boyfriend. ”

Every single time I see one, I get irrationally angry. " Well, no. You get rationally angry. That's objectively infuriating.

When I was younger, if my partner upset me, instead of drawing the conclusion, "I'm upset, this must be a sign his behaviour is bad,"

I'd wonder, "I'm upset, is that something wrong with me? How do I get less upset?

How can I work on myself to not feel this way? " You may be in the same trap. You're clearly irritated by him.

Maybe it's not because you're avoidant or whatever. Maybe he's just irritating.

TermAggravating8043 − Have you considered telling him to stop trying to manipulate you with tradwife TikTok’s?

Point out the obvious that he’s not making enough money to support you both and he hasn’t asked you to marry him.

So these are irrelevant and a waste of time

These Redditors mocked his double standards by suggesting equivalent “ideal husband” videos

blue_eyes_forever − I would ask my bf why he is not waking up at 5 am to make my lunch- since we are both working and it’s the bare minimum...

TheRealTimTam − Just send him tiktoks about how real men earn enough for their wife to stay home and cook and paint etc all day.

Should the couple postpone living together until they successfully test a more balanced schedule? Or does her relief whenever she returns home already reveal an incompatibility that conversation cannot repair?
