MIL Loses Babysitting Privileges After Ignoring Parents’ Rules and Blames Mom for “Destroying Her Life”

in Social Issues

When it comes to raising a child, trust between parents and caregivers is everything.

Even small decisions can become much bigger issues when someone repeatedly ignores boundaries that were clearly explained.

The original poster (OP) had relied on her mother-in-law to help care for her young child for over a year, but she eventually reached a point where she no longer felt comfortable with the arrangement.

After discovering that MIL had been giving their child food without permission despite serious allergies, OP realized the issue went beyond a single snack.

She says there had been a pattern of hidden decisions, ignored instructions, and behavior that made her question whether her parenting choices were being respected.

When OP explained her concerns, MIL responded by ending the childcare arrangement and later accused OP of “destroying her life.”

Now OP and her husband are divided on whether everyone should apologize and move forward. Read on to see what next.

Mother ends her mother-in-law’s childcare role after repeated boundary issues

not the actual photo

'We ended MIL's babysitting. Her final text: "Thank you for destroying my life."?'

DH and I decided to transition our nanny to full-time care. MIL had been

watching LO for about 2 hours every weekday for the last year, but I no

longer felt comfortable with her providing childcare. We were planning to

end MIL's babysitting next week.. We didn't make it that far.

A couple of days ago, I texted MIL asking her not to take LO on afternoon

walks because of the heat. Instead of simply saying okay, she questioned

my decision and said the real reason was because she had given LO a snack

without asking us first. And honestly, that was partially true. I had just

found out she was giving LO snacks during their walks without consulting

us, despite LO having severe food allergies.. That opened the door to a

much bigger conversation.

I explained that my concerns were not about one cookie. The cookie was

simply the latest example. Over the past several months there had been

repeated issues with transparency, dismissing our parenting decisions,

making decisions about LO without telling us, sneaking things instead of

asking, and what often felt like an unnecessary competition with our

nanny. The stroller issue was another example. We had asked that LO stay

in the stroller during walks, but I later realized MIL had been taking him out

anyway without telling us. Finding out afterward instead of hearing it from

her really damaged my trust.

MIL denied everything and told me I make "a very big deal about very small

things" said my words were hurtful and that she didn't feel appreciated.

She then said:. "Obviously, this is not working out well... you need to work

on another childcare option.". At that point, I decided there was no point

continuing to argue over who remembered what. I replied:

"It's too bad that this is how you feel. DH and I appreciate the time you've

spent helping care for LO.

We have the rest of this week covered, including today, so there's no need

for you to come by. We'll finalize full-time childcare for LO very soon..

Thank you again for everything."». Then she sent this text:. "Thank you for

destroying my life.". Honestly... I laughed when I read it. I couldn't believe a

real person had actually typed those words.

MIL then called DH crying and yelling about me. DH told her to stop, and

she hung up. Since then, she hasn't spoken to either of us.. I'm exhausted.

DH thinks we're all at fault and that everyone just needs to apologize and

move on. I don't see it that way. Right now I don't want to speak to MIL, I

don't want her in my home, and I don't feel comfortable with her having

any access to my baby. I told DH that she would need to be the one to

apologize, but I don't think that's likely to happen.. WWYD? Would you

expect an apology? Would you be able to move past it?

Trust is one of the most fragile parts of any relationship, especially when it involves someone caring for a child.

Many disagreements between parents and grandparents are not truly about one snack, one rule, or one decision.

They are about whether parents feel respected as the people responsible for their child’s safety and wellbeing.

In this situation, OP’s frustration appears to come from a pattern rather than a single incident.

The cookie was not the entire problem.

The deeper issue was that OP felt her parenting choices were repeatedly ignored, including decisions involving food allergies, stroller safety, and communication.

For a parent, discovering that someone has made choices behind their back can create a feeling of losing control over their child’s care.

At the same time, MIL seems to be experiencing the situation emotionally, interpreting the criticism as rejection after spending a year helping with childcare.

A different perspective is that both sides may be reacting to different fears. OP is focused on safety, trust, and parental authority.

MIL may be focused on feeling valued and included in her grandchild’s life.

Grandparents sometimes struggle when the role they once imagined for themselves does not match the boundaries established by the parents.

However, feeling hurt does not automatically make someone’s actions acceptable.

Good intentions cannot replace respect for agreed-upon rules, especially when allergies and safety concerns are involved.

This perspective is important because OP’s decision to change childcare arrangements was not necessarily about removing MIL from the family.

It was about responding to a loss of trust.

A grandparent can be loving, helpful, and deeply attached to a child while still needing to respect the parents’ decisions.

Being involved in a child’s life is a privilege that depends on reliability and communication.

The phrase “thank you for destroying my life” likely felt shocking because it shifted the focus away from the child and onto MIL’s personal pain.

OP was trying to address childcare concerns, while MIL responded from a place of feeling rejected.

That emotional reaction may explain her words, but it does not resolve the original problem.

Moving forward, the bigger question is not whether someone should apologize first.

It is whether everyone involved can recognize their role.

OP may need acknowledgment that her concerns were valid.

MIL may need reassurance that changing childcare arrangements does not mean she is unloved.

DH may need to help create a balanced approach instead of treating the conflict as something that disappears through equal apologies.

Family relationships survive difficult moments when people can separate hurt feelings from accountability.

A boundary is not a sign that love has disappeared; sometimes it is the thing that allows love to continue in a healthier way.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed the child’s safety comes first and MIL ignored serious allergy concerns

madempress − Ask DH how, exactly, you're at fault. It is your responsibility

to guarantee your child's safety and it sounds like MIL was taking some

pretty major risks on top of ignoring your authority as the parents. You

weren't mean or unreasonable, you protected your child and didn't take it further.

You have nothing to apologize for, so there is nothing to be done on your end.

spankthegoodgirl − LO possibly dying due to allergies or MIL'S

feeeeeelings. .. DH better get a clue. Children come before tantruming

adults every time. I don't trust your DH at all if he thinks you are the issue,

OP. Let him read these comments. He needs a reality check and to be on

the side of his CHILD and his WIFE. Edit cause I can't spell.

Optimal_Piglet7832 − SAFETY OF THE BABY TAKES PRIORITY OVER

GRANDMA'S HURT FEELINGS. How would Grandma feel if she was a cause

of baby's severe allergic reaction to something, would she blame you

because you allowed her to babysit?

naranghim − Why do you need to apologize when you haven't done

anything wrong? All you've done is maintained boundaries and called MIL

out for stomping all over them. You and your DH aren't at fault here, MIL is

solely to blame. She has ignored the fact that your child has food allergies,

she has fed them things behind your backs and not told you.

This is for your DH: Your mom is a problem. She's dismissive of your child's

food allergies and rather than acting like an adult and asking what food is

safe for LO, she's just randomly giving them snacks. So far, she's gotten

lucky and your child hasn't had an allergic reaction, but eventually her luck will run out.

Would you let her continue to dismiss an allergic reaction as a "small

thing"? I really hope not. Rather than admit that she's undermined your

parenting decisions, her lack of transparency and other sneaky behaviors,

she's trying to blame your wife for the consequences of her own decisions.

The only person at fault here is her, the only person who needs to

apologize is her.

Don't let her twist it around to you and your wife owing her an apology.

These commenters criticized the husband for siding with his mother instead of supporting his wife

RelativeFondant9569 − Your hubby is WRONG WRONG

WROOOOOONGITY WRONG! !!!!

Lauraustralopithecus − Your husband needs to get a grip, he wants to

apologize and move on so that he doesnt have to put in actual effort into

dealing with his mother.

MaggieJaneRiot − DH needs to come on here and read some of the

responses. DH needs to realize how serious this is. DH needs to understand

that his mom is an immature jerk.

These commenters highlighted that the issue is about boundaries, trust, and unhealthy family dynamics

_gadget_girl − Let MIL stew for a while, and do not apologize. This is really

about her lack of respect for your boundaries. It’s fair for grandparents to

want to spoil grandchildren, it’s not okay for them to ignore reasonable

rules, especially when the factual valid reason for those rules has been

explained. Severe documented food allergies is about as real and valid as it gets.

boundaries4546 − “DH thinks we're all at fault and that everyone just

needs to apologize and move on. ” This is because DH has been conditioned

to manage her emotions, for his own emotional safety. He had to do this

when he was a child. It was a matter of survival. Now that he is older her

needs to manage his guilt differently.

He needs to put his actual child’s safety and feelings over his Mom’s

feelings. DH needs individual therapy. You both need couples therapy.

Breaking these dysfunctional family dynamics will require professional support.

Sudden-Ad-3460 − I would be really curious what your husband would say if

you asked him articulate what exactly you did wrong and need to apologize

for. Sometimes if I ask my husband for specifics he literally can't answer,

and he can see (or I can point out) that it's just a knee jerk response to his conditioning.

Sounds like your husband has internalized a pattern that when his mom

throws a tantrum that he/everyone else needs to apologize and fix things

to placate her and "move on". Also, you and your husband should be

mindful that the tantrum wasn't about the childcare discussion. She only

went into full tantrum mode when she tried to pull a power move.

She tried to withdraw childcare as a "punishment" for you setting

boundaries, and it backfired.

These commenters supported refusing to apologize and letting MIL face consequences for her choices

wifemomretired − Tell your husband, "I don't feel the need to apologize for

protecting my child from possible harm. If you feel the need to apologize

for being our baby's father, then go ahead. "

silverwick − "If you wanted to be trusted, you should have been

trustworthy when you had the opportunity"

NorthPossibility3221 − Love how she tried to pull the power move trying to

with hold childcare, and you just went ok doki thank you

MIL’s childcare arrangement ended because the issue was never just one snack or one walk.

The bigger problem was trust: the parents felt their instructions were repeatedly ignored, especially around a child with serious allergies.

While MIL felt unappreciated, her reaction turned a boundary-setting conversation into a personal attack.

Some may argue both sides needed a calmer conversation, but others feel grandparents still have to respect parental decisions.
