Man Refused To Fund His Ex-Wife’s Vacation After She Ignored His Job Concerns

Divorce and co-parenting can become complicated when former partners still depend on each other for support. Helping someone you once loved is one thing, but continuing to make sacrifices becomes difficult when your own responsibilities are treated as less important.

The original poster (OP) was asked by his soon-to-be ex-wife to watch their children while she traveled for a friend’s birthday celebration. He agreed to adjust his work schedule, but the plan changed when a new workplace responsibility made those arrangements impossible.

When OP explained that he could no longer take the extra time off and refused to fund a trip he could not support, his ex accused him of being selfish. Read on to see whether Reddit thought OP was being unreasonable or simply protecting his own stability.

'AITA for not paying for my ex's holiday?'

I (38M) got into a big fight with my soon to be ex wife (42F) because I wont pay for her to travel for her friends 50th birthday.

A bit of context, just over a month ago my ex came to me and said she wanted to travel to her home town

to celebrate her friends 50th birthday and asked me if I will be able to look after the kids during that time.

I spoke to my work and all seemed to be ok, I leave home an hour before the kids school starts and get back 3 hours after their school closes.

This means i will have to be 2 hours late (due to traffic) and leave 3 hours early on the days she will be gone.

My ex also asked if you could lend her the money for the trip as she cant afford it and will pay me back when a project finishes

Jump to the current, the head of the department resigned and the new head is starting on one of the days she will be gone

as such I cant be late or leave early as this will reflect badly and HR revoked my "leave" for that day.

I explained this to her and informed her she will have to cut her trip short and return on the Sunday instead of the Tuesday,

the birthday in question is the Saturday. She then proceeded to shout at me and tell me I am selfish and I need to make a plan.

This spiraled to the point that she told me she doesn't care about my job security and the repercussions of me coming in late on those days in question.

Yesterday she told me she has made a plan with people I don't know well to transport the children on the Monday,

I said to her that as I explained Monday was out of the question and won't work for me.

She informed me that its tough and she is going, so I said that is fine but i won't be lending her the money then

as she has shown that my job that gave me the money is not important to her.

Now I am selfish and an a__hole because I wont pay for her to go on a trip when she can't afford it. So AITA?

Many conflicts after a relationship ends are not really about the specific request being made. They are often about expectations, boundaries, and whether two people still see themselves as partners or as separate individuals.

In this situation, the OP was not only deciding whether to lend money for a holiday. He was trying to understand what responsibilities still exist between two people who are moving toward divorce.

The emotional tension comes from competing priorities. The OP’s ex-wife sees the trip as an important personal event, a chance to reconnect with a longtime friend and celebrate a milestone. From her perspective, she may feel disappointed that a logistical problem is threatening something meaningful to her. However, the OP sees the situation differently.

He was willing to rearrange his work schedule and take responsibility for the children, but circumstances changed when his workplace expectations shifted. His concern is not that she wants to go. His concern is that she appears to expect him to absorb the consequences, even when doing so could damage his own stability.

There is also a deeper issue around financial boundaries. During a marriage, couples often make decisions based on shared resources and mutual support. After separation begins, those expectations usually need to change.

Continuing to financially support an ex-partner’s personal choices can create resentment, especially when the other person does not appear to consider the sacrifices involved.

Relationship therapist Terri Orbuch has explained that healthy relationships depend heavily on respect, communication, and the ability to recognize a partner’s needs rather than only focusing on personal desires. She emphasizes that long-term relationship satisfaction is connected to feeling valued and understood by the other person. Terri Orbuch official website

Applied to this situation, the important question is not whether the birthday trip matters. It likely does. The question is whether the OP’s ex-wife is acknowledging that his job, financial security, and parenting responsibilities matter too.

A healthy compromise would involve both people recognizing the impact of their decisions on each other rather than treating one person’s plans as automatically more important.

The OP also needs to separate two different issues: childcare and financial assistance. He may still have a responsibility as a father to ensure the children are safe and cared for. However, that does not automatically mean he must fund his ex-wife’s vacation. Helping with parenting responsibilities is different from paying for personal expenses.

The ex-wife’s reaction is the most concerning part of the situation. Asking for help is reasonable. Expecting help while dismissing the consequences for the person providing it creates an imbalance.

The OP’s refusal to lend money does not appear to come from spite. It appears to come from realizing that he cannot be expected to sacrifice his job security and finances for a decision he did not make.

Moving forward, both sides would benefit from clearer boundaries. As they transition into co-parenting, decisions should focus on the children’s needs rather than maintaining the expectations of marriage.

The OP can support his children and remain cooperative without becoming responsible for his ex-wife’s choices. A respectful separation requires kindness, but it also requires recognizing where one person’s responsibility ends and another person’s begins.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors believed OP should prioritize his children and honor the childcare commitment he made

temperedolive − ESH You have no obligation to lend her the money.

But as a parent, there are going to be days when you need to have your kids or commit to having them regardless of what's happening at your job

and you need to figure out a way to make that work. Don't lend her any money. But keep the commitment you made to your children.

redd-junkie − You made plans a month ago. You cleared it with work. Work changed the script. That's not your soon to be ex wife's fault.

Figure it out. Single parents have to do it all the time. You are about to be one. YTA

Candi_Kane33 − YTA. If hers aren’t good enough, you need to make childcare arrangements while she is gone.

You made a commitment to your children. You should uphold that.

These commenters criticized the workplace for canceling approved leave and creating the conflict

Supermathie − HR revoked my leave for that day Nope. You have child care duties. Sorry, HR, no can do.

A-Rational-Fare − They shouldn’t be able to just revoke your planned leave ‘because it reflects badly. ’ That’s ridiculous. It was approved!

lilybobtail − "I leave home an hour before the kids school starts and get back 3 hours after their school closes.

This means i will have to be 2 hours late (due to traffic) and leave 3 hours early"

You told her you'd cover for her, then at the last minute backed out, so her frustration is understandable.

I find it hard to believe that HR rescinded your time off like that. Did they make all employees cancel their vacations too? That's absurd.

Couldn't you just tell them you have childcare obligations that you cannot change? Has your wife always had to ask you for spending money?

You guys are still married so technically I don't see why she needs to ask you for money now unless it's just the status quo in your marriage.

Was she a SAHM and you were the breadwinner who kept control of the money? YTA.

It sounds like up until this point, your wife was always in charge of taking the kids to and from school, and you've never worked out

a way to get the kids to/from school without her? Once you become a single parent, you'll certainly have to figure something out.

These users argued OP needed to find a solution and follow through because he agreed to care for his kids

Fuzzy-Sort1884 − YTA my guy. I think she overstepped big time in asking for a loan, but you agreed to it.

So be a man and keep your word. You had a transportation problem that you couldn't solve. It happens.

But she solved it. It just wasn't good enough for you for reasons.

Presumably your ex trusts those people, so unless you have no trust in your exes judgement it shouldn't be a problem.

laja7 − YTA, you said you would do those things, do them.

I'm sure you are capable of finding a way to sort out your kids getting to and from school one day. Plenty of people out there have jobs and do...

FringeAardvark − They’re your f__king kids. Be a decent dad and human.

Keetamien − INFO - What is the issue exactly? 1. She asked if she could *loan* money, so you will get it back.

You are thus not paying for her vacation. 2. Work changed things around so you cannot take care of your own children on Monday,

but a solution was found and offered by your ex so this issue is solved.

HOWEVER, you do not agree with the solution offered that would work for the both of you,

so you rescinded to offer the *loan* so that there is now only a solution that only works for you. Why?

Was withdrawing the loan a reasonable financial boundary or retaliation? Should the mother have shortened the trip once the original arrangement changed?
