Man Ordered His Dream iMac Without Paying, Then Couldn’t Believe Apple Delivered It Anyway

Sometimes, unexpected situations feel like winning a lottery, but the reality behind them can be much more complicated. When expensive purchases involve payment systems, mistakes can happen, leaving people unsure about what they should do next.

The original poster (OP) wanted to buy a dream computer but could not afford the full price upfront. After being denied for an Apple credit card, OP assumed the order would fail when the payment appeared to be declined. However, days later, the expensive computer unexpectedly arrived at the door despite repeated messages saying the payment had not gone through.

Now OP is left wondering whether this was a lucky mistake, a future financial problem, or something that could cause legal trouble. Read on to see what Reddit advised OP to do with the unexpected delivery.

A customer’s expensive Apple order arrives despite failed payments, leaving him unsure what to do next

'Ordered an Apple iMac, purchase was declined, still showed up at my door'

So last week I customized my dream computer, fully upgraded, with logic installed, and applied for an Apple credit card. I was not approved lol

I then just decided to press Apple Pay and put my Face ID in because I figured it would decline and I could move on.

Say what you want I wanted to watch it decline maybe it’s a kink or something idk. I don’t have $3k to buy a computer.

Once I did that though, it immediately said it was being processed, I scrolled down to try to cancel it,

and I saw something that said if the payment doesn’t process in a week the order will be canceled.

So, like any normal person, I assumed it’d be canceled and I’d be good.

All through the week, pretty much everyday, I got text from Apple saying “payment declined for order (numbers) please resolve issue

through email” but since it said it’d be canceled I didn’t think anything of it.

Yesterday I received a text saying it was shipped and would be here Monday.

I thought there’s no way, must just be an error, probably will be canceled soon.

This morning I get a knock on the door, the computer is here, it’s in my living room. I’m just a bit confused.

I’m hoping it’ll just get picked up by a debt collector and I can eventually pay it off as if I was financing it,

but why the hell would they ship it if it didn’t get paid for? Moreover am I going to get into trouble for keeping it?

This is my dream computer after all I don’t want to just give it up.

UPDATE: Mac Demarco goes hard he’s my favorite artist all time probably.. Sunscape. (With the period) is a sick band check them out.

I’m gonna keep it and see what happens! Thanks to everyone who gave advice without malice! Peace and love ✌🏽

This situation is a great example of why online purchases can feel confusing when automated systems are involved.

From the OP’s perspective, it looked like a strange stroke of luck: the financing application failed, payment warnings appeared, yet the expensive computer still arrived at the door. It is understandable why the temptation to keep it feels strong, especially when it is something they genuinely wanted.

However, the key issue is that receiving an item does not automatically mean ownership has transferred. A company accidentally shipping a product because of a payment processing mistake does not usually create a free purchase. The computer was ordered, configured, and delivered as part of a transaction that appears incomplete. The missing piece is payment.

The OP’s confusion is understandable because many people assume large companies would have safeguards preventing this. Companies like Apple Inc. generally have complex order systems involving authorization, inventory, shipping, and payment verification.

Occasionally, those systems do not sync perfectly. A payment failure message may not immediately stop fulfillment if an order has already entered another stage of processing.

The biggest mistake would be assuming silence means the situation has resolved itself. Keeping the computer and waiting to see what happens could create complications later.

The company may contact the OP for payment, request a return, or correct the billing issue. Ignoring those communications could make the situation more stressful than simply addressing it early.

There is also an ethical question. Many people would argue that the OP did not intentionally steal anything because they did not sneak around, hack a system, or deceive anyone.

They placed an order through normal channels, assumed the system would cancel it, and the company shipped it anyway. That matters. Intent is an important factor.

At the same time, the OP now knows the likely reason the computer arrived: a payment problem. Continuing to treat it as a free gift after discovering that would be harder to justify.

A reasonable response would be contacting Apple, explaining exactly what happened, and asking how they want to resolve it. They may provide a payment option, correct the order, or arrange a return.

This is also a good reminder about “too good to be true” situations. Large companies do make mistakes, but those mistakes usually get corrected eventually. The fact that the system failed does not necessarily mean the customer has received an unexpected reward.

The community reaction would likely split into two groups. One side would sympathize with the OP because the mistake was entirely created by Apple’s system and because the computer represents a personal dream purchase. The other side would argue that the computer still belongs to Apple until the transaction is completed.

The bigger lesson is simple: enjoying the excitement is fine, but the safest move is transparency. If the OP reaches out and handles it honestly, they avoid future problems while still having a chance to keep the computer through a legitimate payment arrangement.

A dream computer is much better when it does not come with months of anxiety wondering when someone will come asking for it back.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors advised waiting, checking for later approval, and contacting the company before keeping the item

Necessary_Earth7733 − If you haven’t already opened it then just hold on.

I know it will be hard, but wait a week and see what happens. If you’ve had no correspondence in a week then I say it’s fair game

Due-Contact-366 − The bill will come eventually. I would check to see if a credit approval happened later.

Perhaps it was brought to the attention of a human for further review and then approved.

Mew151 − My take? Reach out to them, explain the situation, offer to return it and if they say don't worry about it, keep it.

If they request you send it back, send it back no harm no foul. Save up for it later and enjoy buying it for real!

Or enjoy the gift on them if they decide it's too inconvenient to have you send a custom item back

you might be surprised they could legitimately give you a free and clear on this and if you do you'd have nothing to worry about at all.

These commenters shared personal stories of accidentally receiving expensive items and unusual shipping mistakes

rfh2001 − I bought a new iPhone for Black Friday a few years ago from WalMart.

My CC kept declining because the transaction presented itself as being in Arkansas (Walmart HQ). I gave up and moved on.   I got no purchase confirmation.

Phone shows up anyway.  I chat with WalMart to see what to do.

They had no record of my purchase because it never processed and they couldn’t initiate a return.

They suggested I take the phone to a store and speak to customer service there.

At the store, they said the same thing and they were not allowed to accept the phone from me.   I felt I did what I could and activated the phone.

I used it for a couple yrs and then traded it for one of those $800 trade-in promos.

I was worried it’d be flagged at that point, but it wasn’t. So I got paid $800 to use that phone for 2 yrs.

casualAlarmist − Once had my dream TV I special ordered from Sony lost in transit. Just Gone. Sony couldn't find it.

Weeks past. I ended up calling a couple of shipping services I knew from my job at the time and found it.

It had been setting in their warehouse with messed up paperwork. They delivered it to my house that day.

I I called then emailed Sony to let them know the TV was found and in my possession.

Sony's response several weeks later was an email informing me the TV was officially lost in transit,

that I had been given a full refund and that they hoped I would order from them again. Best free TV ever.

Witty_Razzmatazz_566 − I once ordered a $9.00 clearance purse, but, a $900.00 Tumi suitcase showed up. I still own a Tumi suitcase. 🤣

rocketmn69_ − Obviously I got declined. . I don't know what computer that you're talking about

These users joked about the situation while suggesting OP document the declined payment and company communication

Traditional-Toe3738 − It's a real pity that you were declined for that Mac and have the documentation to prove it. A real pity.

christal_meth − Was the card you actually charged yours?

You got rejected from the CC, wanted to ApplePay anyways just the see it decline for a “kink” lol, and instead of canceling your order directly,

just assumed that if the payment doesn’t process in a week, it’d get cancelled. Do you still have a pending transaction on your card?

If it shipped already that means it already posted. If you don’t know, I feel like it wasn’t your card that was charged lol. Seems fishy.

Adventurous_Exit_835 − NAL (not a lawyer) but as the top comment said, DO NOT open that or set it up but for like 3 weeks.

1 week isnt enough time for you to receive legal documents just incase you get some in the mail.

OR worse they realize and call the police and file a charge for grand larceny (theft of $3000-$50000), which is a class D felony and carries fines and up to...

People are getting caught more and more every day for stuff like this, when in reality you didnt steal, some i__ot sent you something you shouldnt have.

There is a chance though that if you do set it up and make it officially yours, the law might consider is officially stolen.

Again NAL, but i have had friends get sent bills for things they thought they got for free in some lucky mix up.

Was keeping it a harmless gamble against a massive corporation, or did the decision become dishonest once he knew payment had failed?
