Sister Attacked Her Over Socks, But Their Dad Still Told Her To Be The Role Model

in Social Issues

Growing up with siblings can create lifelong friendships, but it can also create painful relationships when conflict goes unresolved. While parents often hope their children will eventually reconnect, forcing closeness after repeated harm can sometimes have the opposite effect.

The original poster (OP) explained that she has reached a breaking point with her younger sister, who she describes as having severe anger problems and a history of explosive behavior. After an incident where OP says her sister physically attacked her, OP felt abandoned when her parents focused on OP’s reaction rather than the violence that happened beforehand.

During a conversation with her father, OP admitted she no longer feels like her sister is truly a sibling to her and does not want a relationship in the future if nothing changes. Now OP wants outside opinions on whether she is being cruel or simply setting a necessary boundary.

The father was asking his oldest daughter to repair a sibling relationship while refusing to address why she felt unsafe inside their home

'AITAH for telling my dad I don’t see my sister as my sister?'

So I F21 live at home with my Parents, Two younger sisters and my gf.

I’m gonna use fake names for this. My two younger sisters are twins (non identical), Hannah and Faith.

Faith has undiagnosed anger issues and has since a baby. She’s turning 16 in a few months and she’s only going to get worse.

There’s days where she’d be so angry she’ll throw a chair or vase at someone.

Last week I wore her socks that I thought were mine as they literally looked identical.

She see me and immediately started raging calling me the r and f slur right off the bat.

She then punched me in the face before I could react. She was wearing silver rings, I ended up with bruises and a scar on my face.

I called her the r slur back after slamming my door shut. My parents only heard the part about me calling her that, not the fight.

I told them yet they sided with her, telling me to take the socks off and let it be, not to rile her up.

That’s happened about a million times, she gets her way every damn time.

I’ve practically given up telling my parents what she’s done and what she’s like bc I know I won’t get justice.

This morning my dad was driving my to work on his way to work.

My dad was giving me a lecture about how faith is a young teen and has a lot of her plate with friends, school and future exams

(that aren’t for three years for her, and it’s still summer she’s not in school rn).

I told him simply that she has needed help or meds of some kind for years now but nothing has been done about her and I’ve given up.

He told me sisters are for life and that I need to be a role model for her.

I told him that she doesn’t care about anyone except herself, I could tell her anything and she’d tell me to f__k off.

He kept insisting that I just be nice to her and that I act more like a sister and less than a stranger.

I told him that the minute she comes home I feel uncomfortable and unsafe.

That I lock my door and I avoid her so she doesn’t drag me into something that isn’t my business and have to pay the price for it.

He told me that in the near future she’ll be my best friend and that I should make these years count as his older brother is still trying to be

more brotherly to my dad after being the mean older brother for years.

I told him that his brother was a year older than my dad, that there isn’t an age gap like my sisters and I,

that yous had no choice to get along bc you both had to care for their younger baby sister.. I don’t have to do that with faith or hannah.

I told him that unless faith changes in the next couple of years she’s a lost case and nothing is worse than a mean adult.

I told him that she’ll fail with friendships like she already is,

she’ll be fired from every job bc she doesn’t understand taking orders from ppl etc and that I won’t be there to save her.

That If she doesn’t change I won’t communicate with her, I won’t talk to her, she won’t be part of my life when I’ve moved out.

He told me that’s mean and my opinion will change but I told him it won’t.

He’s now giving me the cold shoulder and mentioning out loud how he’s bringing faith shopping or out and about. AITAH?

Family relationships are often described as unconditional, but that does not mean every family member has unlimited access to someone else’s life. Love and boundaries can exist at the same time.

In this situation, the OP was not simply rejecting a younger sibling. She was expressing the emotional exhaustion that comes from feeling unsafe, unheard, and repeatedly expected to tolerate behavior that has caused real harm.

The central conflict is not really about whether siblings should be close. It is about what happens when one person’s struggles begin affecting another person’s sense of security. The OP’s father appears to view the situation through the lens of family loyalty and future regret. He believes patience now may lead to a stronger relationship later.

However, the OP experiences the relationship differently. She sees a pattern where her sister’s anger leads to aggression, her parents minimize the consequences, and she is expected to be the mature one regardless of what happens.

Her statement that she no longer sees Faith as a sister seems less like a lack of love and more like a response to feeling emotionally abandoned by the people who were supposed to protect her.

A different perspective is that both the OP and her father may be reacting from different fears. Her father may fear that his daughters will become permanently disconnected and that he will regret not encouraging reconciliation. Meanwhile, the OP may fear that being forced into forgiveness without accountability will continue a cycle where her own wellbeing is sacrificed.

In many families, the “responsible child” is often expected to absorb more because adults believe they can handle it. Over time, that expectation can create resentment because being older does not automatically make someone immune to harm.

Psychologist Nedra Glover Tawwab has written extensively about the importance of boundaries in relationships. She explains that healthy boundaries are not punishments or signs of rejection; they are limits that protect emotional wellbeing and define what behavior a person is willing to accept.

Her work emphasizes that maintaining a relationship does not require tolerating repeated disrespect or harmful actions.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s desire for distance is understandable. Rebuilding a sibling relationship requires more than telling one person to be kinder.

It requires accountability, support, and a genuine effort to address harmful behavior. The younger sister’s struggles may deserve compassion, but compassion does not mean ignoring the impact her actions have had on others. At the same time, predicting that she will never change may also come from years of frustration rather than certainty about her future.

Ultimately, family bonds are strongest when they are built on safety and mutual respect, not obligation alone. The OP may not be able to force closeness with her sister, and her father cannot force forgiveness before trust has been repaired.

The most realistic path forward may involve protecting personal boundaries while leaving room for change if her sister eventually takes responsibility for her actions.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters agreed that OP’s sister needs accountability and professional help rather than having her behavior excused

SrAlan1104 − If she has these sort of anger issues and is unhinged you love her more than your parent whenever you recommend her get help.

She will grow up alone and miserable if she can't control herself.

I've seen it before and if she ever gets help later in life she will hate your parents for their negligence.

She is still a child under their care and it's their responsibility to make her accountable for her actions

and get her the help an guidance she needs to improve and get better.

Shinez − Children and teens learn through boundaries and consequences. Doesn't sound like she is getting any of those,

but it does sound like her behaviour is being enabled with the 'hope' she grows out of it. It very rarely works, and your advice is solid.

She will become an angry adult and likely come across someone meaner and nastier

that will teach her the consequences for her actions that she needed before adulthood that your parents should have taught her.

You are not the responsible adult here that should be taking this behaviour on to correct or rectify, that is your parents job.

Move out and don't look back, because it is going to get worse because she isn't being taught that it is wrong to hit abuse someone.

Hitting you is a__ault even if you are family.

You are also experiencing family violence and could get help to leave from services if they do have those in your country.

Family violence re physical a__ault (in my country) comes with a serious lawful penalty if you were to report her.

The justice system takes this seriously, even if your family does not. NTA

These users encouraged OP to prioritize safety, move out, and create distance from the unhealthy situation

shammy_dammy − Time to move out.

PositiveCompetition8 − NTA your sister needs help but that’s not your problem. Get out if you can.

Ornery_Donkey_7156 − Move out ASAP. If you still have marks, make a police report.

If not, the next time she does it (which she will, because she has no repercussions) call the police immediately.

Press charges. Maybe the system will force her into the therapy she so deeply needs. Someday there will be a Netflix program.

Whether they're talking to you or about you depends on what you do now. NTA.

These Redditors criticized the parents for blaming OP instead of addressing the sister’s harmful actions

busyshrew − As a parent to a now young adult.

I wonder, hearing what your father said, if your parents simply do not want to acknowledge who your sister really is and what she is going to become.

Because it would be an admission of failure on their part.

They are making excuses to the extent of blaming YOU, the victim, OP.

Of course asking you, the well behaved child, to be compliant and to appease the troublemaker, is easier than confronting

and trying to fix the problem head on. But it's you who is expected to bear the cost of that. And that is not fair.

I am so so sorry that your parents, the very people you should be able to trust to shield you

and protect you and be in your corner, are unwilling to do the hard work of helping to fix the family.

Because really doing something would be very very hard and very very uncomfortable for them.

OP, you are going to have to bide your time. Protect yourself the best you can, avoid as much as you can.

Be canny. Be careful. Make a plan and get yourself out of there when you can. Sending a big mom hug. NTA.

Adelucas − Sadly the only thing you can do is move out and go low contact. Your dad is stupid.

This isn't a bit of sibling fighting, this is someone continuously using you as a punching bag and being coddled

because she creates problems. Instead of dealing with the problems everyone else is treating her like bone china.

She's going to have a bad time of it soon. At the moment she's treated like a child but the adult world can be harsh to people who cause trouble.

You need to be away from it or you'll always be blamed for her issues.

Your dad has this Hallmark movie in his head of sisters becoming each others best friends and hugging it out in tears.

That's never going to happen. Your assessment of her future is spot on and it'll always be your fault instead of placing the blame on her and your parents.

Stoic_STFU − So basically - he blames you the victim of a violent a__ault for not being “nice” to the assailant?

He thinks that her physically attacking her sister warrants a shopping trip after he spends the duration of the ride telling

you that you need to be a better sister because he can’t parent his child who clearly has mental health issues by getting her the help she needs?

What’s he going to do when she hits the wrong person and ends up in jail and both parents get named in a civil suit because of her unhinged behavior?!

You don’t have to engage in the delusion and you should definitely defend yourself by any means necessary.   NTA

These Redditors shared sympathy for OP’s trauma and supported choosing self-protection over maintaining a forced family relationship

Due-Yoghurt4916 − Call the police.   Every time she touches you. She needs help and they dont care

ThatFatGuyMJL − NTA. I detest my brother with a passion.

Hes better than he used to be but he spent his life bullying me and drove me to attempt suicide twice.

My parents dont understand this and insist hes my brother and blah blah blah.

But accept I dont like him and dont want to be around him. And you know what?

It doesn't matter that he has changed for the better in the last few years. It doesnt matter how good a person he becomes in the future.

He was an evil s__t to me most my life and made my life hell. Youre scarred physically and mentally by her and that might never go away.

You need to focus on yourself and tell your parents to stop prioritising them before they lose you. I wish you the very best.

Can a sibling relationship recover after years of violence if the aggressor eventually changes? Or have the parents already damaged that possibility by demanding forgiveness before accountability?
