Woman Finds Secret Inheritance From Biological Father, Then Family Demands a Share

in Social Issues

Inheritance can bring unexpected emotions, especially when the money is connected to years of family secrets and complicated relationships.

Sometimes, the hardest part is not deciding what to do with the money, but figuring out who truly has a right to ask for it.

The original poster (OP) discovered that her biological father had secretly prepared an inheritance for her before his death.

However, the news came with painful revelations about hidden family history, betrayal, and relatives who suddenly believed they deserved a portion of what was left behind.

Now, OP is struggling between protecting what her father intended for her and feeling guilty about refusing her family’s demands.

Read on to see why this inheritance created such a difficult situation.

'WIBTA of I don't give my mom and sister a portion of my inheritance?'

Buckle up, this is a messy one. I (34f) recently learned that my biological

father left me an inheritance in the form of a trust. My biological father

passed when I was 16, before I found out he was my dad, and he was my

sister's (35f) biological fathers brother. So yes my sister and I are in fact

half sisters but also cousins. Well it turns out that he knew and left me my

inheritance, but never said anything per my mother's request (they had an

affair while she was still married to my sister's biological father). Well, I

found out for certain about the paternity when I was 25, (I remember this

because my husband and I were about to celebrate our 1 year anniversary).

I found out a few weeks ago (a couple of weeks after my 34th birthday)

that I was getting an inheritance. I was so surprised because my sister's

biological father (my dad's brother) had hidden everything from me, and

since his name is on my birth certificate, he claimed to be my legal guardian

and would "hold on to everything" for me. He sold what he could and spent

all of the money. I didn't want to sue him as I wouldn't have been able to

get much of anything, and what I would get, wouldn't even be enough for

the legal fees. But it seems as if my bio dad knew this would happen and

set aside some money for me in a trust. My mom and sister know this, and

have been telling me that they deserve some of it. They don't. My mother

thinks she is entitled to back child support, even though on my birth

certificate it still says my sister's biological father and he paid child support.

She was also incredibly abusive until I got married and my husband forced

me to grow a spine (thank you, Babe) and my sister is no better. She thinks

she deserves some of the money because, in her words, "I'm still your

sister". But I wonder where this mindset was when she was the one

instigating the abuse and when she said "I don't care about family, they

only care when they want something". Say it with me "IRONY". Honestly, I

don't feel like I should give either of them anything, however I feel bad.

Maybe it's just my people pleaser tendencies, but now I'm incredibly

confused.. For clarification,. 1- It's not a lot of money, but it would make a

difference in my life. Less than $300,000. 2- No, it is not familial wealth, he

worked hard (blue collar) his entire life and saved his money.

3- he passed before I knew he was my dad, and he was never on my birth

certificate, so legally, he is still technically my uncle

I will answer any other questions to the best of my ability without

disclosing anything that can identify me or my family.. So WIBTA if I don't

give them anything?. UPDATE

Is it ok to have two conflicting ideas at the same time? Over this past little

while, I have realized two things. One: I hate lawyers!!! Two: I am beyond

thankful for mine... I cannot discuss anything else about this, at this time.

Will update when I can.

Money often has a strange way of exposing relationships that were already complicated.

An inheritance may look like a financial gift on the surface, but it can also carry years of hidden emotions, unanswered questions, and unresolved pain.

For OP, this was not simply about receiving money.

It was about finally receiving recognition from a biological father who was absent from her life and learning that someone had intentionally protected something meant for her.

The emotional conflict in this situation comes from OP being pulled between gratitude, guilt, and old family trauma.

She spent much of her life believing one version of her family history, only to discover that important truths had been hidden from her.

The inheritance represented more than financial security; it represented a connection to a father she never had the chance to know.

Meanwhile, the people asking for a portion of it were not approaching the situation from a place of repairing their relationship with OP, but from a belief that they were automatically entitled to something that was specifically left for her.

A different perspective is that family members sometimes confuse shared history with shared ownership.

Being related to someone does not automatically create a claim over everything they receive.

OP’s mother and sister may have their own feelings about the past, but those feelings do not erase the intention behind the trust.

The inheritance was not a reward for the family as a whole; it was a decision made by one person who wanted to provide for his child.

This perspective helps explain why OP feels conflicted.

Her hesitation does not necessarily come from believing they deserve the money.

It may come from years of being conditioned to prioritize other people’s feelings over her own.

When someone grows up managing conflict, abuse, or emotional pressure, saying “no” can feel cruel even when it is reasonable.

At the same time, choosing not to share the inheritance does not mean OP lacks compassion.

She can acknowledge that her mother and sister are part of her history while also recognizing that they have not necessarily acted as supportive family members.

Financial generosity is meaningful when it comes from genuine choice, not fear, guilt, or pressure.

The deeper issue is that money cannot repair years of hurt.

Giving away part of the inheritance may temporarily reduce conflict, but it may not create the love, accountability, or healing OP has been missing.

Keeping the trust intact does not make her selfish; it may simply mean honoring the purpose behind the gift.

Ultimately, family is built through care, honesty, and respect, not just shared DNA.

OP has the right to decide what happens to something that was intentionally left for her.

Sometimes protecting what someone gave you is also a way of finally protecting yourself.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters agreed that the inheritance belongs entirely to OP and the family has no right to demand any share

carmelfan − Hell, no, NTA. Part of your inheritance has already been stolen.

Tannim44 − NTA, tell them they can collect what you're owed from their ex/father, no more no less.

wistfulee − Oh no no no no. That money is yours. PERIOD. End of story.

OJ_Marsh − NTA - you owe them NOTHING! And if your bio dad wanted

them to have anything he would have made the same arrangement for

them. Tell them that they can speak to your sister's bio dad about the $$ he

stole from you and get him to pay them out.

This group believed OP had been mistreated for years and encouraged cutting off toxic relatives

Special_Lychee_6847 − I would seriously refer them to your snake of a

'legal guardian daddy', that squandered any part of your inheritance that

you would've been inclined to give them. Know that you will probably not

inherit anything from your legal parents, because they sound bitter and

vile. Make peace with that. And just bite the bullet and cut them off.

'Clearly, you all value money over family. That's not the kind of family I

want to be part of. I wish you all a happy life. Try not to stab eachother in

the back too much' NTA Edit to add Remember that it's your mother that

caused this mess. Not you.

Environmental_Art591 − No OP you WNBTA, DO NOT HAND OVER A

SINGLE CENT to those women. Your sister father might have been on the

BC as your father but both he and your mum knew better because they

have been punishing you your entire life and your h__ocrite sister treated

you the same because she knew she could get away with it.

They aren't family, ironicly the father you didnt know about loved you more

than them because he had your back, he gave his brother a chance to do

right by you but kept a back up for you just incase because he knew what his brother was like.

That money is payment for all the abuse you suffered, spend it wisely, I

suggest therapy to get to a place where you can cut those toxic people out of your life but that's just me.

asamue16 − NTA, that’s your money and I would go LC or NC with them,

especially because of the abuse. They aren’t going to change, but you

have… they can’t control you anymore. Live a good life…

GoodWin7889 − I’d still go after your former father for what he stole.

These Redditors advised protecting the money, keeping financial details private, and using the inheritance for OP’s own future

bino0526 − You OWE them NADA, ZILCH, NOTHING, LESS THAN

ZERO‼️‼️‼️ Your dad left you an inheritance probably to make up for

you, not knowing that he was your bio dad. Keep the money honor your

dad and use it to better your future, not your mom's or your sisters.

Don't be guilted or bullied by the flying family monkeys into giving them a

dime because if you do, they will not stop asking until you're broke‼️. MY

mom used to say that if you have a quarter, everybody wants a piece of

that quarter. Stop discussing your finances with people.

The more they know about your money, the more they feel like you should

share. Girl, TAKE THE MONEY AND RUNNNNN🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️‼️‼️ Definitely NTA Updateme

MissMurderpants − NTA Mother had child support from her husband. No

double dipping. Your sister I’d tell she can get her ‘share’ from her father

since he already skimmed it from YOUR inheritance. And I’d cut them off.

questions4u2judge − They deserve ZERO. You already had a portion of the

money stolen. Child support does not apply, considering support was paid

to your mother. Which very well could have come from that portion of

money taken by the man/uncle who raised you. Also, the fact they covered

up, that he was your father. As for your sister, she is just being greedy.

He wasn’t her father. Honor your bio father’s wishes, keep the money for

yourself. Don’t allow them to guilt trip you into anything. Remember, “no”is

a complete sentence. There is no reason to debate, discuss or justify your

reasons to either of them. Keep it to yourself as to when you receive the

money & any plans you have to use the money.

It is a private matter & not one you will discuss. Stay strong! P. S. As a

financial advisor, please be smart with the money. Have a game plan. Pay

off any high interest debt first, invest in wise choices. A diversified

portfolio of index funds are always a smart move. Avoid mutual funds,

much more costly with hidden fees & internal portfolio turnover.

Index funds are a one time fee to purchase, money grows faster without all

these expenses with mutual funds, and they perform better. Utilize a ROTH

IRA to the max based on your income, look up the limits. Also, traditional

IRA are available. Talk to a advisor or accountant to know the amounts to

place in retirement.

Use a retirement calculator to know what you will need in your retirement

years. This money is a good opportunity to set aside, allowing compound

interest to really benefit you in the future. Good luck.

Slow-Cherry9128 − If you haven't told them how much you're inheritance

is, don't tell them anything and downplay the amount if they ask. They

don't have any right to the money. .It's all yours and it's what your father wanted to give you.

Put it into a bank account separate from your husband and use it for what

you want whether it be for a down-payment on a house or traveling with

your husband. It's your money, not theirs.

OP’s inheritance represents more than money; it is a connection to a father she never had the chance to know and a final decision he made to provide for her.

While family members may argue that they deserve a share because of their relationship, many readers would question why support only appears when there is something to gain.

OP spent years dealing with pain and secrecy, and this trust was specifically left for her.

Do you think OP is wrong for keeping the inheritance, or should family ties outweigh past betrayals? Share your thoughts below!
