Wife Tells Her Husband Their Marriage Can Still Be Saved, Then Leaves Town With the Man She’s Been Seeing

Infidelity can make a marriage feel as though the entire past has suddenly been rewritten.

It becomes even more painful when the person who cheated insists the relationship was already over, while the other partner was still being told there was something worth saving.

One father is facing that reality after discovering his wife had been involved with a mutual friend while they were still in couples therapy.

The couple shares two young sons, ages nine and seven, and the poster says his wife even lied to the children about taking a trip alone when she was actually away with the other man.

She has since argued that it was not really an affair because she had emotionally checked out months earlier.

Now the marriage is ending, and he is trying to process the betrayal without dragging his children into the conflict.

Scroll down to see why his main focus has shifted from saving the marriage to staying stable for his boys.

A devastated father struggles after his wife leaves on a secret trip with their mutual friend

Wife Tells Her Husband Their Marriage Can Still Be Saved, Then Leaves Town With the Man She’s Been Seeing
not the actual photo

'Wife of 14 years cheated?'

We have two boys, 9 and 7, and she cheated. She has been having an affair

with a mutual friend (whom belittles me and I don’t respect) and is saying

it’s all my fault. She is out of town with him as we speak while I’m at home

with my boys. This is a mutual friend and one of her best friends is his ex

wife; they just got divorced themselves a month ago or less. She lied and

said she was going on this trip alone to our boys. I don’t know what to do or

how to feel, I’m so incredibly lost and devastated. We were in couples

therapy and she said we had a chance to fix our marriage, but she cheated and is unapologetic.

I loved her and I don’t know how to carry on dads, especially being

expected to lie to my kids. I know she’s not alone like she said, but I obviously can’t say who she’s with.

EDIT: She now believes it was not an affair. She apparently checked out of

our marriage months ago while gaslighting me into thinking it was

salvageable. She says to everyone it was not an affair, including me,

because of this. We are getting a divorce, and I will do my best to be stable for my kids.

Sometimes the cruelest part of betrayal is not only what happened, but being told afterward that it somehow does not count.

The OP is already carrying the shock of discovering that his wife was involved with a mutual friend while he remained home caring for their two boys.

What makes the situation even more painful is that she now appears to be rewriting the timeline, claiming she had emotionally left the marriage months earlier and therefore did not see what happened as an affair.

At the center of his distress is a collapse of trust on several levels.

He believed they were still actively trying to repair their marriage through couples therapy.

She apparently allowed him to continue believing reconciliation was possible while becoming involved with someone else.

Then she left town with that person and gave their children a different explanation.

That creates a particularly destabilizing combination of betrayal, confusion, and powerlessness.

He is not only grieving the marriage; he is questioning which parts of the recent past were genuine.

There is another perspective worth considering.

Whether she personally labels the relationship an “affair” may no longer be the most useful argument for him to win.

If one spouse believes the marriage is still active and reconciliation is underway, while the other privately considers it finished, that disconnect itself is enormous.

Her internal decision to “check out” did not automatically communicate a separation to him or erase commitments he believed were still in place.

The OP cannot repair a marriage alone, and reconciliation requires two people who agree about what happened and genuinely want to rebuild from it.

At the same time, his strongest role now may be less about proving who was morally right and more about protecting stability for his sons.

For the OP, that means he does not need to lie to his boys, but he also does not need to give them adult details about the affair.

Age-appropriate honesty, consistency, and emotional steadiness will matter more.

His marriage may be ending, but his ability to give his children a reliable father is not.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters urged the OP to contact a family lawyer immediately and protect his parental rights

fantumn − Lawyer up. One of the big "don't do's" of potential divorces is

leaving the shared home and kids, particularly with the affair partner. Do

what you need to do to protect your kids, their stability, and your relationship with them.

Hairy_Garbage_6941 − Lawyer. Now. Before she comes back. You will not have a better position than right now.

lucascorso21 − Well it depends on how you want this to proceed. If you

think it’s over (which it certainly sounds like she feels that way), then you

should be going to an attorney asap and figuring out how to proceed for

next steps. Don’t wait on this - you want to protect your parental rights and ensure you aren’t going to be taken advantage of.

I’m sorry, brother.

These Redditors emphasized that the wife’s absence gives the OP time to prepare before she returns

Pure_Choice_8459 − Excellent shes out of town. When is she back? Should

give you time to talk to a lawyer. Edit for bad advice on changing the locks

This group advised relying on professional legal guidance rather than Reddit when making major decisions

The_GREAT_Gremlin − 1. This sucks and I'm sorry. You and your boys

deserve better. 2. Don't take advice from reddit. Take advice from an attorney.

Wonka_Stompa − Get a lawyer and a therapist in that order. That’s so cruel. I’m so sorry for you and your kids.

caohbf − 1) get an attorney. 2) listen to what he has to say. 3) do what he

tells you to do. 4) document EVERYTHING. Text friends about your distress.

Text her about this. Avoid calls. Text is great, it's already recorded, no

consent needs addressing. 5) you do not have to lie to anyone. Especially not to the two people who rely on you most.

Mom is on vacation with x person who is her boyfriend. Be matter-of-fact about it. 6) don't call her anything.

These commenters encouraged the OP to focus on his children, stay grounded, and remember that his life is not over

electricmop − I’m sorry brother. Hang in there. Focus on the kids and put all your energy into them.

Apprehensive_Gap3673 − First off - I am sorry you are going through this.

I'm not going to downplay it, I've gone through it myself.   It can feel world

ending, and in some sense it is.   I can't help you through every detail, but

what I can say is that you never really lose it all, you just trade it for something different.

You still have your job, your friends, your kids.    You will feel pain and it

may be short or you may feel it for a while, but through all that try to

remember that you retain all the things you need to build and have a

beautiful life.    Regardless of what happens, be stoic and firm and reasonable.

Keep your moral core intact and getting through this could be the start of something great

ThatDadLifestyle − Mate. .. That's absolutely heartbreaking. Please repeat

the mantra to yourself: "This is not my fault. " You did not do this. Even if

you were a crap husband, that does not force her to deceive and lie. If she

really is attempting to assert that you are the reason she cheated, it says a lot about why she cheated.

When someone says “you made me cheat, this is your fault”, psychology

usually frames that as blame shifting and cognitive dissonance reduction.

Cheating violates most people’s self-image as a decent human being. To

resolve that internal conflict, the brain looks for a justification that

preserves their self-concept. One way is to externalise responsibility. If the partner is framed as neglectful, controlling, distant, etc.

, then the cheating can be mentally reframed as a reaction rather than a

choice. It reduces guilt and protects ego. In simple terms: the behaviour

might be influenced by relationship problems, but the act itself is still a

personal decision. Saying “you made me do it” is usually a psychological

defence mechanism to avoid owning the choice. This was not your fault.

This was her choice. Blaming you is her way of trying to make herself feel better about her disgusting behaviour.

This commenter suspected the affair may have started earlier than the wife admits, given the timing and connection between the people involved

McCool303 − Does her friend know how long she’s been banging her ex-

husband? Because something tells me this has been going on a lot longer

than she’s leading on. I mean the ink is barely dried on their divorce papers.

And the dude is already out scheduling trips away to bang her best friend in secret?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the belittling started with the affair a longtime

ago out of jealousy. Sure would explain the s__tty husband he was to his

wife. With friends like her who needs enemies I guess.

Commercial-Co − Whoever suggests changing the locks is really ignorant of

how things work in the west. It might fly in the east where certain

countries infidelity is illegal, but usually not in the west

This commenter questioned why the affair partner is described as a “mutual friend” despite openly belittling the OP

ChrisP_Bacon04 − How is it a mutual friend if they belittle you and you don’t respect them? How is that a friend?

The marriage may be ending, but his role as a father is becoming even more important.

Whether she calls it an affair or says she had already emotionally left, he was still being told the relationship could be repaired while she was involved with someone else.

That contradiction is understandably devastating. He does not need to protect her version of events by lying to the children, but he can keep the explanation age-appropriate and focused on stability.

Do you think divorce is the healthiest path here, or was there still anything left worth trying to save?
