Teen Explodes at Brother’s Funeral Music Outburst, Then Realizes He May Have Broken His Spirit

in Social Issues

Grief can bring out emotions we never expect, especially when we are already carrying years of complicated feelings.

In those moments, even a small action can become the thing that finally breaks someone’s patience.

The original poster (OP) was mourning the loss of his mother when a difficult situation unfolded during her funeral.

His younger stepbrother, who expresses himself through music, made a decision that OP felt was completely inappropriate at the worst possible moment.

Overwhelmed by sadness and anger, OP reacted in a way that left both of them hurt.

Read on to find out how OP is now trying to balance his own boundaries with his stepbrother’s feelings.

Teenager grieving his mother loses control at the funeral

not the actual photo

'I killed my brother’s only passion and now he is nonverbal?'This is a long story so settle in. I (17M), have a younger brother(9M), he’s

my stepbrother and he’s been in my life for a few years now. Recently, my

somewhat estranged mother passed. My stepbrother never met her, and

has never felt any true grief or sadness so of course he had trouble

empathizing. Most of his time is spent making music. And it’s honestly, it’s

so bad. I think it’s because he has never felt human emotion before. (No,

really) back when I was in psychosis you could’ve really convinced me he

was an alien lol. Anyways… music is my brothers passion. He has been

hooked on “ska” I didmt even know what this was until I met him. It’s all i

hear all the time. He has big headphones but he always uses speakers.

Sometimes when his speaker dies, he uses them on such high volume you

can still hear from meters away. My dad and stepmom let it just happen

(weak) and even encourage it. My brother recently got a trumpet and some

recording kit. It’s all day, he is so bad. He has poor motor control and slow

reflexes so his timing is awful. He has no technical skill, even know he is

only 9, I don’t think he will ever get better.

As I previously mentioned, my mom died. We were close when we were

younger but after my parents divorced and remarried she wasn’t really in

the picture. Part of me thinks it’s my stepbrother, although I know it’s the

real reason is because she was in poor health and didn’t take good care of

herself and therefore didn’t get custody.

Her funeral was on Saturday. My stepbrother was instructed to wear

headphones and black attire but he had a meltdown (as always) and got his

way. This kid is f__king weird im just so mad. And I feel so awful. He insisted

on wearing his “ska-ing” outfit. We managed to get him to wear the black

top but unfortunately he can’t go f__king anywhere without a kilt. (We

aren’t even Irish) a stupid f__king boots with stupid socks. (Don’t get me started)

During the procession I noticed him fiddling with tablet. I told him nicely to

stop. I was already holding back tears mourning my mother. I don’t know

what he was thinking, maybe trying to lighten the mood?! But he started

playing his music, yes, HIS music. The ska he wrote and recorded HIMSELF.

Right in the middle of my aunt giving her EULOGY. I told him to stop again

but he turnedthe volume up. It was so loud and embarrassing I felt my eyes

go red with fury and I took his tablet from him and shouted. I don’t

remember what I said because I was just so emotional. Everything was pent

up and I just let it all out on him. Everyone was staring for the rest of

funeral. For the first time I saw my stepbrother truly cry. Slow silent tears,

nothing like his meltdowns, I felt like truly saw him as a person. In the car,

he didn’t ask to play any music, a silent hour long car ride. Nobody said a

word and my stepbrother silently cried.

When we got home he threw off his kilt and went straight to his room. In

the morning I slept until noon. Crickets. No loud trumpet or upbeat drums.

I had the best sleep in years and I can’t help but feel guilty. My dad told me

he is worried that my brother has given up, not just his music but his life.

He didn’t eat breakfast. He hasn’t been talking. My stepmom said that

before ska he was nonverbal but Ska gave him an avenue to express

himself. I’ve been feeling so guilty. But my quality of life is also better. I

don’t know anymore. What do I do? Do I apologize to him, tell him his music

is good? I don’t want to lie or take it back because I do believe that what he

did was wrong and at 9 years old he should know that, but I guess don’t

want to be the person responsible for crushing his dreams even if those

dreams are Ska. I don’t know what to do but I cannot go back to how things

were. Please help me.

Grief can make even small moments feel impossible to carry.

When someone loses a person who once mattered deeply, emotions often become tangled with anger, exhaustion, regret, and a desperate need for control.

OP was not only dealing with the death of his mother; he was also carrying years of complicated feelings about his family, his younger stepbrother, and the feeling that nobody was protecting his space.

At the center of this situation is not really a disagreement about music.

OP’s frustration comes from feeling invisible during a moment when he needed support.

The funeral was supposed to be a place where he could mourn, but instead he felt forced to manage a child’s behavior while everyone else seemed to accept it.

From OP’s perspective, the tablet incident was the final breaking point after years of loud music, disrupted peace, and resentment that had been building quietly.

However, his stepbrother likely experienced the moment very differently.

For a child who uses music as a major form of expression, especially one who may struggle socially or emotionally, having that passion rejected in such a painful moment could feel like a rejection of himself.

A different perspective is that both people were hurting, but in completely different ways.

OP was grieving the loss of his mother and needed quiet, respect, and emotional space.

His stepbrother may have been trying to participate in a world he did not fully understand.

Children often do not process funerals, grief, or social expectations the same way adults do.

A nine-year-old may understand that someone died without understanding the emotional meaning behind a funeral ceremony.

This does not mean OP’s stepbrother’s behavior was acceptable.

Playing music loudly during a eulogy was disruptive and hurtful.

Boundaries still matter, especially during important family moments.

But understanding the reason behind the behavior changes how someone responds afterward.

If music gave this child confidence, communication, or a sense of identity, then attacking the music itself may unintentionally feel like attacking the child.

The healthiest path may be separating the action from the person.

OP does not need to pretend the music was amazing or apologize for needing respect at the funeral.

He can apologize for the way the anger came out while still explaining why the moment hurt him.

Something simple like acknowledging that the funeral was painful, admitting he lost control, and telling his stepbrother that his passion matters could repair some of the damage.

At the same time, OP deserves boundaries.

A child’s passion should be supported, but a household also needs quiet hours, appropriate volume levels, and respect for important events.

The solution is not forcing OP to silently suffer or forcing the child to abandon music.

It is finding a balance where one person’s expression does not completely overwhelm another person’s needs.

This situation is painful because nobody involved seems to be trying to hurt the other.

They are two people struggling with grief, communication, and needs that collided at the worst possible moment.

Here’s the feedback from the community:

These commenters suggested the brother may have autism and emphasized the need for evaluation, support, and understanding of his behavior

BrooBu − Your brother obviously is on the spectrum…. Has he ever been

diagnosed? Where were his damn parents not removing him for being

extremely disrespectful during the funeral? It sounds like they just let him

do whatever he wants. Even kids with autism need rules and boundaries,

someday he won’t be a cute little kid anymore. I read a really good

parenting book, “no bad kids.

” What stuck out to me was the advice to talk to them not like they’re

dumb or don’t understand, not with anger, it talk to them like if you were a

manager and he was an employee.

Tell him that when he did X during your mom’s funeral it made you feel Y

Apologize for losing your temper, but try to explain it was a very emotional

time and he needs to know when it’s appropriate to play music or not. In

the future, if he’s not sure, he can ask or use headphones.

But he needs some therapy WITH the whole family. He seems to not have

enough guidance at all (or understanding of his condition from his family).

Edit: I probably butchered the explanation of the book. It advocates

treating children with authentic human respect, similar to how you would

respectfully speak to a peer or employee.

Not talking in baby talk, being direct, acknowledging their feelings without

trying to distract or bribe them, set clear boundaries and hold them accountable.

RollingKatamari − Your parents completely failed you in this. Because of

their inaction they made an already stressful and sad day even sadder.

Don't let them guilt you into thinking you're the sole reason he's gone non

verbal again. They should have never brought him to the funeral especially

when he was already having meltdowns up front.

His mum should have stayed with him at home or at least stayed outside

during the funeral so ppl could mourn in peace. Is this kid even diagnosed

and in therapy? Or are your parents just letting him do whatever he wants?

This kid is never going to be able to live on his own and you wil not be his

carer when your parents can't look after him anymore.

actualbagofsalad − I’m extremely sorry for your loss. I work with kids who

have autism, and if your brother hasn’t been diagnosed, he should be at

least evaluated based on what you’ve written here.

You mention yourself that you’ve experienced psychosis in the past, so it

seems to me that you’ll be able to understand him/his behavior better with

the lens of his mental health condition since you may have one of your own.

He may not fully grasp your grief and likely is not able to take the

perspective of another person to understand how you feel, so it would be

helpful for you to calmly explain how you feel and what he did to make you feel that way.

That being said, your parents should not have brought him to a funeral

where he would need to abide by very strict social etiquette rules. He

clearly is not able to do that at this time, and they’re at fault for that completely.

You may want to invest in some noise cancelling headphones for your own

peace and you would probably benefit from seeing a mental health

professional to help you process this grief.

xgemmax − The kid is Autistic right? So being 9, with social &

communication issues that seem somewhat significant for him to be non

verbal and to have also regressed back to this, you have also said he lacks

the capacity to empathise or feel emotion, I’d say no he doesn’t “know better”.

I think his ability to read the room and understand the feelings of others

and what is appropriate to do is seemingly non-existent so he did what he felt.

You were not wrong to be upset, your Dad and step mother seem to be

pretty s__t if they let him go unchecked and did not remove the tablet or

him if he wasn’t able to cope.

Maybe go to him and just say you were very upset that day and you could

not contain your emotions and relate it to a time when he does similar

during his melts so he gets it and that when you are angry you do things

without thinking. Its up to you if you want to say anything else or apologise.

These commenters blamed the parents for not setting boundaries or managing the situation during the funeral

kamariwatson − Your parents are to blame for this. I know it's easier just to

give in and not fight with him, but somewhere along the way he has

learned that if he puts up a big enough fight, you all will just back off and

allow him to do whatever. No real structure, no real discipline, no real boundaries, nothing.

.. And that isn't fair to you to suffer in silence while he gets what he wants.

You were not wrong for standing up for yourself or for asking that he

respect your family's grief. He doesn't get a pass to be disrespectful.

jollyramble − Stop feeling guilty. Honestly I think some of this is on his

mother. He shouldn't have come to the funeral if he can't behave, his

parents should have made other arrangements for him because what went

down at your mum's funeral was absolutely unacceptable. I'm not surprised

you lost your sh1t! It's also not your fault that be has so many complex

needs and difficulties.

The music might have been helping him in small ways, but it isn't going to

make him ok. Whereas having silence is helping you enormously. Just enjoy

it. He'll be ok, and he'll bounce back - hopefully with other, quiet interests.

Username00555 − Yeah naw your parents are slackin haaard, sounds like

they’re neglecting both yall a lil bit. Not empathising w your loss, and the

awful ska disrupting your peace. And they’re not giving your brother any

rules, which eventually will cause for chaos as he gets older specially if he’s

as on the spectrum as you’ve made it sound

These commenters encouraged calmer communication

DarkQueenQuinn − Be honest. Tell him you’re sorry but he also hurt your

feelings. Tell him it’s ok to enjoy his music, but he needs to learn to be

respectful of others space and emotions. Send like a complete lack of

communication from everyone in the picture here, including the adults.

AGuysPal − Yeah…you are almost twice the age of him, you definitely need

to be smarter about how you interact with him in the future. You are also

not his parent, if somebody was going to get him to stop playing with the

tablet, it should’ve been your father. With that being said you are 17, you

are also just a kid yourself.

You lost your mom and are very understandably o__rwhelmed and lashed

out, you are not a criminal, you are grieving. It sounds like your brother has

some form of autism, and you aren’t helping your “I feel awful” case by

calling him “f__king weird” and actively talking down on him while your

trying to state that you feel bad.

Give him time, give him space, and it will be okay. You are all going through

a lot right now and stuff like this is very normal when something like losing

a mother happens.

But stop bashing your brother, if you really can’t stand him that much get

headphones for sleep, stop focusing so much on what he’s doing that’s

frustrating you and start focusing on yourself. You need to keep yourself

mentally stable and find new ways to be happy.

The attitude towards your brother is horrendous though, you are a kid but

you are old enough to know that. I’m sorry for your loss, and I hope as a

household you guys are all able to grieve and heal properly. The OP was carrying a huge amount of grief, anger, and frustration when the funeral incident happened, but the situation also revealed something deeper: a 9-year-old child lost the one thing that helped him express himself and connect with others.

While playing music during a eulogy was inappropriate, the answer likely isn’t to destroy his passion.

A sincere apology can acknowledge the hurt without pretending the behavior was acceptable.

Do you think OP’s outburst was understandable given the circumstances, or did it go too far?

How can someone set boundaries while still protecting a child’s confidence? Share your thoughts below!
