Coworker Calls Sunglasses “Unprofessional,” Then Starts a Workplace Feud Over the Word “Toque”

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Workplace conversations can become unexpectedly tense when a harmless comment turns into an argument over language, culture, or who is supposedly correct.

What begins as casual small talk can quickly feel personal when one person refuses to let the issue go.

The original poster (OP) was walking to get coffee with three coworkers when one of them criticized him for wearing sunglasses outside.

The conversation soon shifted to the word “toque,” which OP used to describe a winter hat.

After explaining that the term is commonly used in Canada, his coworker repeatedly insisted that the word was made up or only used where OP came from.

OP eventually called it a “Canadianism,” but later learned the coworker felt insulted and was complaining about him at work.

Read on to see whether people thought OP crossed a line.

Coworker questions a common Canadian term for a winter hat

Coworker Calls Sunglasses “Unprofessional,” Then Starts a Workplace Feud Over the Word “Toque”
not the actual photo'AITAH for using the word "Canadianism" with a coworker?'I (36M) went to get coffee with 3 coworkers, we'll call them Jill (\~45F),

Jane (\~45F), and Jack (\~50M). We left the office to go get coffees on a

sunny day and I put on sunglasses. I have sensitive eyes and had laser eye

surgery last year, so I generally protect my eyes going out.

Jack commented it was weird that I had on sunglasses. I said that I have

sensitive eyes. Jack replied that it wasn't workplace appropriate. I said

we're outside going to get coffee, I'm not wearing them in the office, I

don't see the problem? Jack continued saying he just thought it was weird I

even brought them to work. So I made a joke that I'm a crazy kind of guy, I

wear sunglasses in the summer and he might even catch me wearing a

toque in the winter. Jill and Jane gave a small laugh.

Jack then asked me what a toque is. Jack is an immigrant, but has been

here (Canada) for at least 20+ years I believe from previous conversations.

So I was a bit surprised he never heard of a toque. I said, like a beanie, a

winter hat. He said he's never heard someone call it a toque before. I said

oh, it's a word used in Canada for it. Jack again said that he never heard it

referred to as a toque and then said I must be making it up or that they call

it that where I'm from. I said, no it's just a Canadian word for a winter hat

basically. He said no one here calls it that, he's never heard it before in his

life. Jill chimed in and said that yes, people call it a toque but in the US it's a

beanie usually. Jane didn't really say anything. Jack continued to say how

that's not true and no one calls it a toque. We kind of let the issue go, but

Jack wouldn't and just kept saying how he never heard of it. I eventually

said toque is just like a Canadianism, I guess. He said that wasn't true and

just kept going on and on, which I ignored at that point. We got our

coffees, walked back to the office and I didn't think much of it.

Apparently Jack is mad and telling people that I was a real AH about it,

using the word 'Canadianism'. I asked Jill and Jane both and they said I just

tried to explain what it was, I didn't really say anything about him, but he

must not know what Canadianism means.. AITAH for saying toque is a Canadianism?

Sometimes the strangest workplace conflicts begin with something so minor that it is difficult to understand why anyone remained upset afterward.

A pair of sunglasses and a winter hat should have produced nothing more than casual coffee-break conversation.

Instead, the exchange became uncomfortable because one coworker repeatedly treated his own unfamiliarity as proof that someone else must be wrong.

OP’s decision to wear sunglasses outdoors was reasonable, especially after laser eye surgery and with light-sensitive eyes.

Jack’s claim that bringing sunglasses to work was somehow inappropriate seems less like a legitimate workplace concern and more like an unsolicited judgment about a harmless personal choice.

OP initially responded calmly and then used a light joke to defuse the criticism.

Nothing in the account suggests that he mocked Jack’s background or deliberately tried to embarrass him.

The conversation about “toque” followed the same pattern.

Jack had never heard the word, but instead of accepting a simple explanation, he insisted that OP must have invented it or that nobody in Canada used it.

Yet “toque,” also commonly spelled “tuque,” is widely recognized as a Canadian term for a close-fitting knitted winter hat.

It has even been described as one of the best-known Canadianisms.

The word “Canadianism” itself is not inherently insulting.

In this context, it simply means a word, expression, custom, or linguistic feature associated with Canadian English.

OP was describing the term’s regional usage, not suggesting that Jack was less Canadian because he did not know it.

People can live in the same country for decades and still encounter unfamiliar slang, particularly when vocabulary varies by province, generation, community, and social circle.

The deeper issue may be that Jack experienced the correction as a challenge to his knowledge or belonging.

Research on communication conflict shows that people often begin with different assumptions and interpret disagreement as a personal or values-based attack rather than a simple gap in experience.

Once that happens, they may defend their original position even when another person offers clarification.

That possibility explains Jack’s reaction, but it does not make OP responsible for it.

OP answered the question, another coworker confirmed the explanation, and the group attempted to move on.

Jack was the one who continued arguing and later complained to others.

OP was not the antagonist for using “Canadianism.”

At most, this was a minor misunderstanding that Jack escalated unnecessarily.

A calm private conversation could still help: OP might say that the word referred only to regional vocabulary and was not intended as a comment about Jack’s identity.

Not knowing a word is ordinary. Turning that unfamiliarity into a prolonged dispute is a choice.

Workplace respect requires enough humility to accept that personal experience is not the limit of what exists.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters dismissed Jack as irritating, strange, and unable to make a meaningful point

boxesofboxes − Man Jack sure has a lot of words and nothing meaningful

to say.   NTA

mailforkev − Jack sounds like a dique.

SpaceWolves26 − NTA

Jack sounds insufferable

These commenters found Jack’s objection to wearing sunglasses outdoors completely unreasonable

SomeoneYouDontKnow70 − NTA. Jack is just looking for things to be

offended about. Also, wearing sunglasses for medical purposes is

completely normal. Jack really has no business complaining about your

doing that. My family has a history of macular degeneration, and my

optometrist recommended that I wear sunglasses whenever I go outside, too.

Calm_glas609 − I’m still stuck on Jack having a comment about anybody

putting on sunglasses when outside in the daylight. WTF is Jack’s problem? NTAH

Impressive_Moment786 − NTA-Jack seems to be a bit weird. Who is

surprised or annoyed by a person wearing sunglasses when it is sunny?

Ok_Smile9222 − NTA. Jack seems like a real a__hole though. Who the hell

cares if you wear sunglasses and how in gods name is it inappropriate to

bring sunglasses to work? ! I've never heard of such a thing

These commenters believed Jack was embarrassed about not knowing the Canadian term “toque” and reacted defensively

glutenisnotmyfriend − NTA. I don't understand what Jack's real issue is. You

tried to explain it. You used "Canadianism" in that effort and that's not a

bad word or anything. I think he's embarrassed he has never heard of it and

is taking it out on you. That said, it's very weird he hasn't. ETA: fixed a

sentence for clarity

Outrageous-Main8781 − NTA even a little bit. Seems to me like Jack was

trying to pick a fight from the jump. You handled it well. Come winter you

should REALLY trigger him and wear sunglasses and a toque at the same time! 🤯🤯🤯

EmberKasai − NTA and Jack needs to chill out? ? I live in Canada now too

after migrating, and even I've heard toque used a few times. It's so weird

he's so gung ho about the toque thing even when someone else

corroborated it. And unless I'm just ignorant, I don't think Canadianism is a bad word?

It's also not that weird to bring sunglasses and wear them outside? ?? I

don't understand Jack lol It sounds like you've been patient and

considerate of him in the conversation, and he's just being dismissive. Like

we live in a multicultural country, does it matter what people call their

winter hats omg

catskilkid − NTA He's the AH for living in Canada for 20+ years and not

knowing what a touque is. The way he just couldn't accept you and the

other two associates is really bordering on the deranged. But its Canada, so

no hating on the hoser.

OP’s comment about wearing sunglasses turned into a strange argument over a very common Canadian word.

A toque is simply a regional term, and the fact that one person hadn’t heard it before didn’t mean it was invented.

OP explained the meaning, coworkers confirmed it, and the conversation only became awkward because Jack refused to accept that different places use different words.

Do you think OP was rude by calling it a “Canadianism,” or was Jack making a simple explanation into a bigger issue than it needed to be?
