Man Wants To Date His Ex-Wife’s Affair Partner’s Wife, But Revenge Isn’t His Only Motivation

Infidelity can end one relationship while creating an unexpected connection between the people left behind. Shared pain may bring two strangers together, but that does not always mean acting on those feelings is simple.

One man found himself drawn to the wife of his ex-wife’s affair partner after both marriages fell apart. Their first real connection came through the betrayal they had each endured, but a later coffee meeting revealed that they had more in common than anger and heartbreak.

Now, with his separation still relatively recent and his thoughts increasingly focused on her, he is wondering whether asking her out would be inappropriate or simply an unusual beginning. Scroll down to see why this complicated situation left Reddit divided.

A divorced man considers dating the wife of the man who had an affair with his ex-wife

'I want to ask my the wife of my ex-wife’s affair partner out. But I am not sure'

My ex wife cheated on me with her colleague. When I found out she begged me to forgive her and give it a try. We started therapy.

We have a daughter so I didn't want to leave immediately. We went out for dinner and her affair partner was there with his wife.

He got scared that we would make a scene so while his wife was outside he ran to us to say that his wife didn't know.

I asked "is that your wife?", when he said yes I laughed and asked him if he was mental to cheat on someone like her.

The wife is literally drop dead gorgeous. My wife became furious and she yelled all the way home about what I meant.

I told her I said what I said. Only a sick b__tard would cheat on that lady.

My ex wife asked for divorce by then, and she ended up telling the other woman.

She contacted me a few weeks ago. She left her husband. She probably wanted to know if I was oblivious. We ended up chatting for a while.

Then we met for coffee. This woman is as kind and sweet as she is beautiful. My head is full of her. Is it wrong to try my luck or...

I mean we are not related in anyway.

My wife and I have been separated for 6 months but really the marriage ended about a year ago when I found out.

Throw away, names and location are private

Sometimes two people meet through circumstances so painful that comfort can feel almost indistinguishable from attraction. The OP and the other woman were both betrayed by the same affair, which gives them an immediate understanding few outsiders could share. His interest may be sincere, but the unusual beginning makes caution more important than shame.

The emotional dynamic involves grief, validation, and sudden closeness. After being deceived by their spouses, both people likely experienced humiliation and damage to their trust. Speaking together may feel comforting because neither has to explain the entire story or defend why it hurt.

She already understands the lies, secrecy, and anger surrounding the affair. The OP also clearly noticed her before their marriages ended, which complicates his certainty that this attraction developed only afterward. His ex-wife’s jealousy may have intensified the moment, but it does not determine whether the current connection is genuine.

A fresh perspective is that asking her out would not automatically be immoral or an act of revenge. They are separated from their former partners, unrelated, and capable of making their own choices.

However, shared betrayal can produce accelerated intimacy. Feeling deeply understood during a crisis may create the impression of compatibility before either person has seen how the other behaves outside the aftermath of infidelity. A relationship built entirely around what their spouses did could weaken once anger fades and ordinary life returns.

Psychologist Randi Gunther explains that infidelity can produce trauma-like reactions, including intrusive thoughts, emotional instability, and repeated searching for information that might restore a sense of safety.

The Gottman Institute similarly describes recovery from an affair as a demanding process involving grief, emotional vulnerability, and gradual rebuilding of trust rather than a quick return to normality.

That insight suggests the attraction should be explored slowly rather than dismissed. Neither person must be perfectly healed before dating, but both should examine what the relationship represents.

Is the OP interested in her character beyond her beauty and their shared experience? Would he still pursue her if their former spouses never learned about it? Can they spend time together without repeatedly discussing the affair? Honest answers would reveal whether this is emerging affection or an emotional refuge from betrayal.

The realistic approach is to invite her to something simple while acknowledging the complicated context. He should avoid dramatic declarations, secrecy, or using the relationship to punish either ex-partner.

Because he shares a daughter with his former wife, discretion and stable co-parenting also matter. Dating this woman is not inherently wrong. The greater risk would be rushing forward before either of them knows whether they are choosing each other—or merely choosing someone who understands why they are hurting.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters believed the unusual relationship could work and was worth exploring

mhmmm8888 − Shania Twain ended up with the husband of the wife that her husband cheated on her with, and I’m pretty sure they’re still together.

It can work.

PoliteCanadian2 − Shania Twain has entered the conversation.

These Redditors encouraged asking her out while moving slowly and respectfully.

Dear_Parsnip_6802 − Your marriage might have ended 12 months ago but hers didn't.

I'd take it very slow and try to gauge where she's at in the healing process.

You don't want to be the rebound or to have your only connection a trauma bond.

UseObjectiveEvidence − Ask her out for another coffee. Keep it slow and don't be a jerk.

If she has integrity she will respect you more if you show some dignity.

sarahjustme − The old truism, about "rebound relationships " being ovetly dramatic emotional disasters, seems to be based on real life.

If you're both going into this knowing it's just about fun and "seeing what happens" and emotionally supporting eachother while you heal, it might be good.

More like friends with benefits, but still... Or you could blow off some stream for a few months (at least) and then ask her out.

These users supported pursuing happiness but stressed putting the children’s wellbeing first

OberKrieger − Turnabout is fair play. Think of your daughter first and foremost, though.

Grombrindal18 − Go for it, you both deserve to be happy. But you should definitely take it slow, even more so because there are children involved.

You don't want to jump back into a level of a relationship that one or both of you may not be ready for yet.

These Redditors encouraged OP to take a chance rather than wonder what might have happened

HarryCWord − "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Wayne Gretzky

Late_Ambassador7470 − Worth a shot honestly, your situation can't get much worse.

This commenter shared a similar story where the betrayed partners later built a relationship

shagidelicbaby − I had a friend in highschool and university that had a wonderful woman as a girlfriend.

We all lived in a big house for a while. He ended up having a one night stand with one of our highschool friends,

who I suspect was quite vulnerable at the time. She had a long term BF as well.

His GF ended up with the other fellow and got married. He ruined at least one other marriage only a few years later. Good job Dan!

Should he pursue the connection carefully, or wait until both divorces feel less raw? Could their unusual history strengthen a relationship, or would it always keep their former spouses in the room?
