Woman Babysits For Free, Then Finds Her Sister’s Hidden Camera Recording Her Apartment

Helping family with childcare can feel rewarding, especially when it creates a close bond with nieces and nephews. But generosity depends on trust, and that trust can disappear quickly when someone crosses a private boundary without permission.

A 27-year-old woman had been watching her sister’s two young children every weekend for months without asking for payment.

Then, while cleaning her apartment, she discovered a hidden camera attached behind a picture frame. Her sister admitted placing it there so she could check on the kids, but she had never mentioned it because she expected an argument.

Now, the babysitting arrangement is over, their mother is defending the decision, and the sisters are locked in a bitter dispute over privacy and parental concern. Scroll down to see how Reddit responded.

A woman stops babysitting after discovering her sister secretly hid a camera in her apartment

'Am I wrong for telling my sister I won't watch her kids anymore after I found a camera she hid in my apartment?'

So my sister (34) has two kids, 4 and 6.

She works weekends at a hospital so I (27f) watch them every saturday and most sundays.

This has been going on for about 8 months.

I don't charge her anything, I actually like hanging out with my niece and nephew. We do crafts and stuff, its fine.

Last week I was moving my bookshelf to clean behind it and I found this small camera stuck to the back of a picture frame.

Like one of those tiny wifi ones you can buy on amazon for like 30 bucks.

I freaked out at first honestly because I live alone and my first thought was someone broke in. I almost called the police.

I texted my sister a picture of it and asked if she knew what it was.

She called me and was like oh yeah I put that there a few months ago. Just casually. Like it was nothing.

She said she wanted to be able to check in on the kids while she was at work and see what they were doing.

I asked her why she didn't tell me and she said she "knew I'd make it a big deal." Which. Yeah. Because it is??

That camera has been recording my apartment for MONTHS. Not just when the kids are there. I live there full time.

I watch tv in my underwear on that couch. I have people over. She's had access to all of that.

She says she only ever checked the feed when the kids were there and I told her I have no way of knowing that.

She got defensive and said I was acting like she was some kind of creep when she's just a concerned mother.

My mom is on her side saying I should understand because "she's a mom and moms worry" and that I'm blowing it out of proportion.

I told my sister I'm done babysitting until she apologizes and acknowledges that what she did was a violation of my privacy.

She told me I'm being selfish and now she has to figure out childcare last minute.

My brother thinks I'm right but won't say anything because he doesn't want drama.

I feel like I'm going crazy. Like am I actually wrong here??

She put a camera in MY home without my knowledge or permission. Thats insane right

Few violations feel more unsettling than discovering that someone has been watching inside a place where privacy should be guaranteed. The OP did not merely find an unfamiliar gadget in her apartment. She learned that her sister had secretly recorded the home for months, including private moments that had nothing to do with childcare.

The emotional conflict is built around trust, entitlement, and minimization. The OP generously provided free weekend care for eight months because she loved spending time with her niece and nephew. Her sister responded by installing surveillance rather than openly discussing any concerns.

Saying she withheld the truth because the OP would “make it a big deal” is especially revealing. It shows that she anticipated the boundary, understood consent might be denied, and deliberately avoided asking. Her anxiety as a mother may be genuine, but worry does not create ownership over another adult’s living space.

A fresh perspective is that ending the babysitting arrangement is not retaliation. Childcare requires trust in both directions. Parents must trust the caregiver, while caregivers need confidence that they are not being secretly monitored, judged, or recorded.

If the sister believed her children were unsafe, she should not have left them there every weekend. If she trusted the OP, hidden surveillance was unnecessary. Either interpretation exposes a serious contradiction.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline describes technology-facilitated surveillance as the use of connected devices, including hidden cameras, to observe people inside their homes without meaningful consent. Its guidance emphasizes that this kind of monitoring can undermine autonomy and create lasting uncertainty about what was seen, saved, or shared.

Psychologists also describe trust as accepting vulnerability based on an expectation that another person will behave appropriately. Secret recording breaks that expectation because the watched person never agreed to become vulnerable in the first place.

That insight explains why the sister’s reassurance that she “only checked when the kids were there” cannot repair the damage. The OP has no reliable way to verify when the feed was accessed, whether recordings exist, or who else received access. More importantly, the original betrayal was installing the device at all.

The realistic response is to remove and preserve the camera, change Wi-Fi credentials, check the apartment for additional devices, and document the sister’s admission. Local recording laws vary, so obtaining legal advice may also be sensible.

Babysitting should remain suspended unless the sister accepts responsibility without excuses. Being a worried parent may explain her motive, but it does not erase the OP’s right to privacy, consent, and safety inside her own home.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors said OP should never babysit again, even after an apology

dumplinglifesaver − I wouldn't babysit ever again even with an apology. She's nuts.

aroundincircles − Even if she apologizes, I would NEVER let her or her kids in my home again. you are NW.

laughter_corgis − You are not in wrong. Your mom can watch the kids for your sister. She violated your privacy and an apology is not enough.

You were doing a massive favor for her and she totally disrespected you.

These commenters called the hidden camera a serious privacy violation and possible crime

WestOffice3579 − Your sister put a surveillance camera in your home. Thats not "being a concerned mom" thats literally a crime in most states.

intellectual_dimwit − Are you kidding me? You should be making a huge deal of this, because it is that huge of a deal.

That's beyond insane to secretly plant a camera in your home and think nothing of it. How would she feel if it were reversed?

Sounds to me more like she didn't trust you taking care of her kids properly and was trying to prove herself right. YNW!

agirlfromgeorgia − Yeah, thats multiple felonies level of illegal where I live. She would be facing minimum of 10 years in prison if convicted.

I would NEVER babysit for her again and I'd probably go no contact if this happened to me, she would be dead to me after this.

This is an insane violation of your privacy and she knows it was wrong or she would have told you.

I would really consider reporting this to the police. This is insane.

These users advised checking the entire home and considering a police report

ElectricalBar5095 − Forget the babysitting argument for a second. Go through your entire apartment and check for more.

Bathroom, bedroom, everywhere. If she did it once without telling you she could have done it again.

justheretolurk3 − I would weigh the options about filing a police report.

You have no idea if she has recordings of your apartment and what she may do with them.

This is especially important because she’s not apologetic and she could use the recordings to blackmail you.

She did this without asking, and that is a major problem. ETA.

I’m saying file the police report, because it’s very important that she never feel comfortable doing that to anyone else.

Delicious_Umpire4799 − the "I knew you'd make it a big deal" part is what gets me.

She knew it was wrong. She did it anyway. And then got mad at YOU for being upset about it. Nah

Evening_Relief9922 − I’d still make a police report and have them talk with her about how that’s against the law and maybe put some scare into her.

Not necessarily get her arrested but just so she knows not to ever do that again.

Should she report the camera, or would permanent distance and written proof be enough? Could trust ever return after someone knowingly placed surveillance inside your home?
