A chance meeting while traveling can become a wonderful memory, especially when both people expect it to remain a single moment in time. Occasionally, though, life takes an unexpected turn that neither person could have predicted.

One young woman shared that she met a man while visiting Rome and spent an unforgettable day getting to know him before they went their separate ways. They agreed their connection would stay casual, and she returned home believing that chapter of her trip was over.

Then she missed her period and received news that completely changed her future. Now she is trying to figure out what to do next while knowing almost nothing about the man she met. Keep reading to see the advice people gave her.

'I got pregnant by a one-night stand in Italy'

Hi, please be kind as English isn't my first language and i am trying my best not to pass out from shock.

Last month, some friends and I went to Italy since it wasn't tourist season.

I am 19, university student from Belarus, so I was really excited to get a break for a few days.

We had a great first day, and then my friends wanted to do something I didn't want to do one day so I did my own thing.

I was walking around and this really handsome italian guy approached me. He asked me to coffee, we walked around the city centre and went to a museum.

One thing led to another and we hooked up. It was my first time so i can't say it was amazing, but he actually made me feel special.

We agreed it would be casual and the next morning, I left and I haven't seen him since.

I missed my period a few days ago, took a test, and it was positive.

All I know about him is he has brown curly hair, hazel eyes and his name is Antonio.

We were in Rome, and he was from the Piedmont region (he was on a work trip to Rome.)

I have no idea what to do, how I would find him, what to do for my body. Is there a way I could find him? I am so scared.

Few moments in life feel as overwhelming as discovering that a single unexpected event has changed the future overnight. Panic often arrives before clarity, filling the mind with impossible questions and worst-case scenarios.

In this story, the OP is not simply processing an unplanned pregnancy. She is facing it while far from the father, in another country, at just 19 years old, and without knowing what comes next.

The emotional conflict is driven by uncertainty rather than regret. The OP does not describe the encounter as coercive or deceptive. Instead, she remembers feeling respected and cared for, which makes the situation even more emotionally complicated.

Now she is trying to reconcile two very different realities: a pleasant memory of a brief connection and the frightening responsibility of an unexpected pregnancy.

It is natural that her first instinct is to search for Antonio, not only because he may be the father, but because finding him represents a way to make an overwhelming situation feel less lonely and more understandable.

A different perspective is that the search for Antonio may actually represent a search for certainty. When people experience sudden crises, the mind often focuses on solving one concrete problem—finding a person, getting an answer, or creating a plan—because uncertainty itself is psychologically exhausting.

Yet even if she were able to locate him tomorrow, many difficult decisions would still remain. His reaction cannot determine what is healthiest for her body, her future, or her emotional wellbeing. Those decisions ultimately belong to her, supported by trusted people and qualified medical professionals.

Psychologist Susan David explains that emotionally difficult situations become easier to navigate when people acknowledge their feelings without allowing those emotions to make every decision.

Rather than rushing toward certainty, she encourages recognizing fear, confusion, and grief while gathering reliable information step by step. This process, which she calls emotional agility, helps people make choices that reflect their values instead of reacting purely from panic.

That perspective is especially relevant here. Before worrying about whether Antonio can be found, the OP’s first priority should be confirming the pregnancy with a healthcare provider, learning about available medical care, and understanding all of her options.

If she wishes to locate him, practical avenues such as reviewing travel photos, messages, social media, or mutual places they visited may help, but none should come before her own health and safety. Finding him may provide answers, but it is not a prerequisite for receiving medical care or making informed decisions.

The most reassuring truth is that she does not have to solve her entire future today. Right now, she is frightened because every question feels urgent at once.

Breaking the situation into manageable steps—medical confirmation, emotional support from someone she trusts, and then deciding whether and how to search for Antonio—can make an impossible situation feel survivable. Whatever path she ultimately chooses, she deserves support, accurate information, and compassion rather than judgment.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors felt finding the father was unlikely and urged OP to focus on her own options

Icy_Calligrapher7088 − Even if you managed to find this guy, you’d just be giving him bad news.

It seems impossible that you’d be able to collect any sort of child support. You don’t have to be a teenaged mom, it would be insane to choose that.

EmceeSuzy − You are either going to abort or you are going to be a single teenage mother. No you are not going to find this man.

I think you should terminate the pregnancy. You are in the middle of your studies and you're not in a position to raise a child.

These commenters warned that becoming a young single mother could bring major financial and personal challenges

MaksimMeir − Coming from expat of Belarus, it is not a great country to be a single mother

Away-Meet5954 − Don't be like me- you're way too young to give up your youth for a child.

I love my son but I really made a mistake by thinking the father would do anything for us.

Embarrassed-Wafer667 − Girl , 1) you don’t know his last name - so how are you going to find him. ?

2) he didn’t even ask for your number after it was over , so obviously he didn’t care to see you again , so what makes you think he wants...

3) you’re 19, you have no money, how you going to feed the child Summary ; get an a__rtion and move on

This user offered practical help finding the man through Italian platforms and gave OP emotional support

Deaceleste − Girl I got you. I’m 26F from Italy. Do you want me to post something? I can traslate in italian if you’d like.

I can help you post on italian platforms but you have to decide of course what to say.

Take a breath, I know that there are ppl that love you that will support you no matter what. My DMs are open tho.

Take care, you have your whole life ahead of you and you’ll figure it out

These Redditors pointed out that adoption is another possible path besides parenting or ending the pregnancy

nimbogrimbo − There is a third option between a__rtion and being a single mother: if you don't want to abort your child then you can always choose adoption.

TYGRDez − If you didn't exchange contact info, I think it's extremely unlikely you'll ever find or see him again.

The way I see it, you basically have two options: 1. Carry your baby to term and raise it as a single mother

2. Assuming it's legal where you live, get an a__rtion Personally I'd recommend option #2, but only you can make that decision.

These commenters urged OP to get tested for STIs after the encounter.

wishingforarainyday − This is very dangerous behavior. Please get tested for STIs. Some are especially dangerous for the baby.

smokeseshhhh − A__rtion + STD testing.

What advice would you give someone facing an unexpected pregnancy after a vacation romance with virtually no way to contact the other person?
