MIL Holds a Months-Long Grudge and Takes It Out on the Bride’s Family at the Wedding

by Leona Pham
August 6, 2026
in Social Issues

Some family conflicts don’t start with one big explosion.

Instead, they build slowly through small comments, excuses, and moments where someone feels unsupported.

Eventually, there comes a point where ignoring the problem no longer feels possible.

The original poster (OP) has spent years accepting her MIL’s difficult personality because she believed that was simply “how she is.”

But after her son’s wedding, OP reached a breaking point when she felt her MIL crossed a line and her husband refused to hold her accountable.

Now, OP is wondering if protecting her peace means walking away from her in-laws or if she should try to repair the relationship.

Keep reading to see how Reddit responded to this complicated family situation.

Woman goes no contact with her mother-in-law after wedding-day

'AITAH for going no contact with my in-laws after my MIL did things out of spite at my son’s wedding?'

AITAH for going no contact with my in-laws after my MIL did things out of

spite at my son’s wedding? Buckle up….its a long one….

Me (48F) & husband, Ryan (42M) have been together for years. My grown

children are not his biologically but he has always treated them (& our

grandchildren) like his own. My son (28M) got married June 2026 & had a

beautiful wedding! My in-laws have always from day 1 been invited to any

kind of my family functions, we’ve alway welcomed them with open arms.

Things have been fine in the past, my MIL (65F) has always been kind of a

rude person but overall we just overlooked her comments & let it go. My

husband always just said “it’s just how she is.”

Come this past May it was my husband’s birthday & we had dinner

reservations with his parents for Saturday evening to celebrate. The night

before (Friday) my husband had a little too much birthday celebration & we

ended up having a disagreement….over me seeing a male gyno. (I work at

an OB office so we all see the docs, makes life much easier for us & we

don’t have to pay for the visit) well my husband made a really rude & stupid

comment that hurt my feelings really bad. So I told him I was canceling

going to his birthday dinner. I left Saturday morning & he texted me asking

when I’d be home. I asked him what time he was leaving & he said about

2:30p, I replied “I’ll be home after 2:30p then”

I then nicely texted his mom & told her I apologized but wasn’t going to

make it to dinner that night. Now I don’t know what Ryan said to her, but I

got home about 3p he was still home & was on the phone with his parents

in the garage. I went in the house & he came in later & no lie looked me

straight in the eyes and said “you can leave” (he’s NEVER said that to me in

all the years we been together)

The way my head spun around & I think I spit fire must have scared him lol

because he froze & I said “I’ll burn this house down before you will ever tell

me to leave”

By the end of the evening, and a whole lot of yelling later we worked it out.

Now his mom used to call me atleast 2 times a week. Faithfully for years.

After that, I didn’t get one text or one call for 5 weeks. Until the wedding.

Now here’s where the drama starts….wedding days are BIG. Ceremony is

4:30p, guests arrive starting at 3:30, my in-laws show up & my FIL sees us

and tells how us how beautiful everything is & how wonderful we look! My

MIL, her first words are “oh look at your boobs hanging out, I bet Ryan

loves those!” For context I had a beautiful silk navy blue long formal dress

on with a low plunge neckline with spaghetti straps! Very elegant, and yes I

have 38 D cups but the dress made them look great lol

Strike one…anyways the wedding starts & all of it goes off without a hitch,

then it’s reception time. My parents, my in-laws & some of my extended

family is at our assigned table. Typical reception stuff & it comes to the

maid of honor & best man speech. Now my oldest son was the best man

(29M) and my boys are 19 months apart so they have been best friends

since they were born! So my son’s speech was cute & funny & from the

heart. Now in the middle of it, my MIL has the audacity to sigh as loud as

she could not once but twice, pick up her plate & fan herself & loudly say

“I’m so hungry” meanwhile my mom & aunt are watching her & side eyeing

me like WTF? It was all I could do to keep myself together….but I did.

Then it’s time for a quick prayer before dinner…and my MIL is like “oh god

come on” like really? Ok strike 2.

We get dinner & the DJ announces the dances coming up. Well anyone who

knows me knew how much the mother/son dance meant to me! I picked a

super special song for it & I was so excited to have this moment with my

son. As soon as my MIL heard that, she got up & said “ok, well we’re leaving

now” I was like “don’t you want to stay & see the dance with Riley?” She

said just a blatant “nope” and grabbed 4 cupcakes & cookies on her way

out. That was it! The rest of the night was a blast & everything I had hoped

it would be for my son & DIL.

The next day comes & my other DIL (28F) calls me & says “Nana (my mom)

called her” I was like “oh boy what now?” She said my MIL (Donna) walked

up to my mom in front of my family & told her “your dress is terrible, it

looks like you’re going to a funeral”. Stunned, my mom didn’t know what to

say or anyone else, she just said “thanks” lol

That was the last straw….I marched in the house told my husband what

happened & said you better do something about this. And his response was

“What do you want me to do? She’s my mom” I said I want you to call her

out on her behavior, which is completely unacceptable!

After 4 days of us having this conversation about how he should handle it,

he said he wasn’t. So I did. And I sent her a long text outlining all the things

she did mentioned above & how very rude she was when she was

graciously invited to the wedding as family. I told her that as of now, I’m

going no contact with them & as far as I’m concerned they are not welcome

to anymore family functions until she can apologize for her behavior. It’s

been 6 weeks and she refuses to apologize & told my husband that they do

not care about me at all. Now my husband says he stuck in the middle & I

should just apologize for my text. I refuse to apologize for anything

because I did not create this situation. My MIL did this all out of spite for

being mad at me over the birthday dinner & my husband agrees with that,

but still enables her behavior. He refuses to stand up to his parents for me.

So AITAH for going no contact with my in-laws?

Few things hurt more than watching someone disrespect a person or moment that matters deeply to us.

When a major family milestone is involved, people often expect disagreements to be set aside for the sake of celebration.

Instead, OP experienced what felt like a deliberate attempt to diminish a day that was supposed to be filled with love, pride, and happiness.

The emotional conflict in this situation is not only about the MIL’s comments at the wedding.

OP appears to be carrying the pain of feeling unsupported by her husband as well.

The wedding incidents became especially painful because they represented a larger pattern: OP felt her MIL was allowed to behave however she wanted because “that’s just how she is,” while OP was expected to tolerate the consequences.

For OP, the issue was not one rude comment or one awkward moment.

It was the feeling that someone was allowed to hurt her family during an important event without accountability.

A different perspective is that family conflicts often become less about the original offense and more about loyalty.

OP’s MIL may have been reacting from resentment after the birthday disagreement, using the wedding environment as a place to express anger indirectly.

However, another possibility is that the MIL’s behavior reflects a long-established communication style where criticism and dismissive remarks are normalized.

In some families, people excuse hurtful behavior for years because confronting it feels more uncomfortable than tolerating it.

This idea is important in OP’s situation because going no contact is not necessarily about punishing her MIL.

It appears to be OP’s attempt to create distance after feeling repeatedly disrespected.

However, the long-term challenge is not only the MIL’s behavior but also the disagreement between OP and her husband about how to handle it.

When one partner feels abandoned during family conflict, the hurt can become more damaging than the original insult.

At the same time, reconciliation does not have to mean pretending nothing happened.

An apology, acknowledgment of harm, and a commitment to behave differently would likely matter more than simply returning to normal contact.

OP’s decision to step back from her in-laws is understandable, especially after a painful event where she felt her son’s wedding was disrespected.

Moving forward, the healthiest outcome may come from focusing less on winning the conflict and more on creating clear expectations for future interactions.

Family relationships can survive disagreements, but they usually cannot survive when one person is expected to repeatedly accept disrespect to keep the peace.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters agreed OP was right to distance herself but believed her husband was the bigger issue

Stock_Particular6525 − NTA but you do have a husband problem.

askashleythatsme8 − NTA for going non contact, she sounds awful. Your

husband is the problem. He’s obviously talking s__t about you to his

parents when you fight and chooses to allow MIL to act out of line. Sounds

like he is more like MIL than you think…

Vegetable_Title5889 − NTA, but do you really want to stay with a man who

doesn't defend you? or have your back in any meaningful way? sounds like

whatever mommy says, he agrees with.

ItsAllALot − NTA for going no contact with your in-laws, but I have to

wonder why you're not having similar boundaries with your husband! His

behaviour towards you is absolutely not okay, and tbh is a much bigger

problem in my eyes.

These commenters suspected the husband had been speaking negatively about OP to his mother and creating the conflict

FoofTheBunny − That man has been bad mouthing you to his Momma

forever and a day ago for her to feel this comfortable being so rude. Do

not apologize. Do not go to any family functions. And have a very long

conversation with hubby that he can go live with his Mommy if he wants to

continue to trash you to his family.

OneTrackLover721 − So, your hudband got drunk, yelled at your for seeing

a doctor, bad mouthed you on the phone to his mom, and told you to leave

your house.   She stopped regularly calling you after that because he was

telling her how awful you are.   This isnt a MiL problem. This is a husband problem.

He didn't get upset that his mother was being rude and trying to ruin his

son's wedding? ?  I would be so embarrassed! Instead he's acting like you

(and your mom, and the other wedding guests) are the issue and not his mom.

These commenters criticized the husband for failing to defend OP and prioritize their marriage

tattoovamp − Your husband doesnt care about you. If he did, he would be

protecting you from his mom. HIS MOM.

No-Carob4909 − Why exactly do you want to be shackled to this pathetic,

spineless loser? He’s never going to back you, ever. He will never stand by

you. He doesn’t love or respect you enough to insist that his mother show

you respect. Which, by the way, is not even the bare f__king minimum.

He talks s__t about you to his mother (so unattractive btw), then lets her

treat you like s__t and demands you ask for more? Get bent. So again, why

do you want to stay married to a loser that neither loves, nor respects you?

NTA but you are to yourself if you continue to put up with such a pathetic mammas boy.

These commenters suggested couples counseling or deeper conversations because the husband’s behavior was damaging the relationship

Ecstatic-Highway-246 − NTA! And he is not “stuck in the middle” — he is

choosing his mother’s side. Couples counseling might be helpful.

Kamikazisqurl − NTA but the comment “you can leave” should have been

where you drew the line with him and your in laws. Because you have to

know that that is exactly where he got the audacity to say such a thing to

you. Especially after a fight over what doctor you were seeing. Does he not

realize how incredibly invasive a gynecological exam is.

The last thing anyone thinks about is s__ during one of those.

These commenters viewed the husband as immature and unwilling to take responsibility for the conflict

Odd_Welcome7940 − NTA. .. Your husband sounds like a weak pathetic

man. Tell him to read the replies to this post which I am sure will be

illuminating. I am also sure your telling of this story isnt with out it's own

bias, you are likely not some perfect angel.

That said, the fact she used her own grandson's wedding as a way to get

back at you is pathetic and your husband is a c__ard for allowing it and

trying to justify it. For God sake man, grow the hell up and defend your

family. Even if you thought your wife was wrong, it was never your son's fault.

Take your balls back from mommy's purse and defend your family.

West_Economist_2195 − NTA. You married a complete wet wipe though.

The apple seems to have never fallen from the tree at all. Let me get this

straight: 1. Your maladjusted husband got a little tipsy and made

crude/n__ty comments about your upcoming gynaecology appointment.

I'm assuming this was degrading and s__ual in nature due to his issue being

the male doctor.

2. You then rightfully declined to celebrate the widdle birthday boy

because of his s__tty behaviour the night before. And his response was to

b__ch about you to his mommy and demand that you leave your own home.

3. His ingrate of a mother, who quite frankly received a charitable invite to

a huge event for your actual family, decided to behave like a vindictive

trash bag and he did NOTHING to mitigate that at all. In the five weeks

between the two events, he didn't reach out once to undo the damage he

did on the call on his birthday either.

4. You then, again, rightfully confronted him about his mother's behaviour

and he basically didn't care and refuses to amend the situation he created

by disrespecting you (& your marriage), instead insisting that you apologise

to his degenerate mother. Yes, his mom is horrible, but HE did this. Why are

you married to a selfish, disrespectful and spineless a__hole?

Throughout this story, which spans a couple of months, there have been

zero redeeming points about this man. He has consistently behaved and

treated you poorly, refusing to take accountability for his actions. If I were

you, not only would his mother no longer be welcome to any function or

around me, but he'd be getting shipped off with her. What an absolute helmet.

commonsense_good − This all starts over a gyno exam? Jesus. NTA.

A wedding day is supposed to be about celebrating the couple, but OP’s MIL turned several meaningful moments into opportunities for criticism and disrespect.

What makes the situation more painful is not only the hurtful comments, but the lack of support from OP’s husband when his mother crossed obvious boundaries.

OP didn’t cut contact over one rude remark; she reached a breaking point after repeated behavior and feeling unsupported.

Do you think OP’s no-contact decision was a fair boundary, or should she have handled it differently to protect the family relationship?

Should her husband have stepped in sooner? Share your thoughts below!
