Cousin Demanded Grandpa’s House, Then Lost Everything After One Reckless Move

Many families have one person who believes they are the chosen favorite. Sometimes that confidence is harmless, but sometimes it grows into an expectation that everyone else should accept.

A Reddit user described his cousin Jake, who had spent years assuming he would receive special treatment from their grandparents. Because he lived nearby, he had more opportunities to spend time with them, and he interpreted that closeness as proof that he was valued above the other grandchildren.

At a large family reunion, Jake finally decided to test that belief by asking about his grandfather’s future plans directly. The answer surprised him, and the disagreement that followed exposed years of resentment and entitlement. Keep reading to see why the family reunion became a turning point.

An entitled grandson loses his inheritance hopes after a family reunion reveals the true will

'Entitled Cousin ruined his life after a family reunion'

My (31m) Cousin (30m), who I will call Jake, has always considered himself the “favorite” of all the grand kids

because of how our grandparents would always do stuff specifically with him.

The real reason why they “only spend time with him” is because he lives five minutes from them

whereas the rest of us live in different states, me being the furthest at a 13 hour car ride.

None of us know where this entitlement comes from, even Jake’s parents have called him out on his behavior but it doesn’t change.

So to the story, my grandma passed away 10 years ago and my grandpa is getting up in age (92m) but still amazingly healthy despite it all.

My dad, aunts, and uncles were having some discussions with him leading up to the summer family reunion regarding future funeral costs,

making sure his will was up to date, insurance, etc.

We get to the reunion this past August and all is going well until Jake starts to make a comment

about how he’s “totally getting the house and Grandpas refurbished cars”.

(My Grandpa rebuilds old cars with my Uncle, Jake’s dad).

We all ignore him like usual which seems to upset him so he decides to “prove it” to us and asks Grandpa directly about the will.

Grandpa gathers all nine of the grandkids together and tells us that his major assets, house and cars,

will be sold and divided equally among all of us grandkids.

Jake lost his s__t because, despite years of being told that he loves all of his grandchildren equally, he still believed he was the “favorite”

and would therefore get most everything from the inheritance.

It got even worse when he realized that this included our step cousin Erin (25f) who, despite being in the family since she was 12, “wasn’t even a real grandkid”.

TLDR: This devolved in to literally the entire family ganging up on Jake, hurling all kinds of insults at him for the things he said.

The reason I’m writing about this now is that I just got off the phone with another of my cousins an hour ago,

who told me that Jake was arrested last night for trying to steal one of our Grandpas cars.

But since he never once actually helped with those things, the i__ot tried to steal one that didn’t even work yet.

So from what I’ve heard, Jake is currently sitting in a jail cell with his parents refusing to bail him out

and my Grandpa has a meeting with his attorney on Thursday to remove Jake from the Will.

Sorry if this was all over the place but this is the basic gist of the drama currently taking place in my family.

Edit: Just to clarify, Grandpa had discussed this in advance with all of his kids (my dad, aunts, and uncles)

and as everyone is well established in life they were happy to let the money from the house and car sales go to the Grandkids.

Everyone will still be getting sentimental items too of course.

Edit 2: None of us know why or where Jake gets his ego from. He’s a college graduate, had a great job working for a local mining company,

his parents are honestly my favorite aunt and uncle to hang out with, he doesn’t do drugs,

and he’s the kind of guy to nurse a single beer for an hour and call it a night.

Few things reveal a person’s character more clearly than how they react when they do not receive what they believe they deserve. Many people hope to be appreciated by their families, but there is a major difference between feeling loved and believing love creates entitlement.

In this story, the inheritance was never the real issue. The deeper conflict was a belief that affection had created a special status that everyone else was supposed to recognize.

The emotional dynamic centered around expectation versus reality. Jake appears to have interpreted proximity and attention as proof that he held a unique position in his grandfather’s heart. Because he lived nearby and shared more daily experiences with his grandparents, he convinced himself that he was the obvious favorite.

The problem was that he transformed normal family closeness into a hierarchy. When his grandfather publicly explained that the estate would be divided equally, Jake did not simply experience disappointment. He experienced the collapse of an identity he had built for years.

A different perspective is that entitlement often grows from assumptions that are never challenged early enough. Jake’s family had apparently told him many times that all grandchildren were loved equally, but he continued believing the opposite.

This suggests the issue was not a lack of information. It was a refusal to accept information that contradicted the story he preferred. The inheritance announcement forced him to confront a reality where he was valued, but not elevated above everyone else.

Psychologist David Dunning, known for research on self-assessment and overconfidence, has explained that people can sometimes develop inaccurate beliefs about themselves when they interpret limited experiences as evidence of broader truths.

His research on the Dunning-Kruger effect is often discussed in relation to knowledge, but the broader lesson applies to self-perception: people may struggle to recognize when their personal interpretation does not match reality.

That idea helps explain why Jake’s reaction became so extreme. The disappointment itself was understandable. Anyone might feel hurt learning they were not receiving a particular sentimental item or larger share.

But turning that disappointment into anger toward relatives, rejecting a step-cousin’s place in the family, and allegedly attempting to take property crosses from sadness into destructive behavior.

The most important lesson from this family conflict is that love and inheritance are not the same thing. A grandparent can spend more time with one grandchild because of distance while still caring deeply for everyone equally. Being present more often can create more memories, but it does not create ownership over someone else’s belongings or decisions.

Jake’s story is a reminder that feeling special can be wonderful, but believing you are entitled to special treatment can damage the very relationships that made you feel valued in the first place.

Families often survive disagreements over money and possessions. They struggle much more when someone allows pride to become more important than the people around them.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors mocked Jake’s entitlement and felt he brought the consequences on himself

Interesting_Wing_461 − Guess Jake isn’t the “favorite “ anymore. What a d__fus.

Character-Novel7927 − What an absolute Dickbiscuit. Jake is getting what he deserves, F__k All.

HistoricalBrick8945 − FAFO. Simple as that.

These commenters praised the grandfather for being fair, standing up for himself, and updating his will after Jake’s behavior

SweetMaam − If he wants the house, he can buy everyone out. Frankly, most people leave their assets to their children , not their grandchildren.

He should be grateful grandpa loves his grandchildren so much he put them in his will. Grandpa sounds like a great guy.

marie585 − How rude to ask grandpa who he is leaving stuff to in the first place! Cousin is an i__ot!

Flimsy-Truck4033 − I’m so proud of your grandpa filing charges for the car incident and revising his will to cut Jake out.

Not to mention making things even in the first place! Good for grandpa for being fair and then seeing Jake for who he is acting accordingly. Wow.

These users shared examples of family members creating unnecessary conflicts over inheritances and possessions

isthisonetaken13 − When my grandmother died, she had arranged to give $1,000 to each of the grandkids.

One of my uncles threw a tantrum because two of the cousins were conceived by my uncle in a sperm donor situation,

so tantrum uncle tried claiming that they didn't count as family. What a f__king turd, burning bridges over $2,000.

ChrisIronsArt − My mom is one of 8, my grandfather used to own a steel company in southern Indiana.

Before my grandmother passed there were already sticky notes on the back of all the furniture claiming it. So funking m__bid in my opinion.

I live in metro Atlanta and all I got was my grandmas old dried up paints, whereas my cousins who live in southern Indiana got full bed room

and dinning room sets that they later sold. At least I never have to see those people again until someone dies.

These Redditors warned against assuming future inheritances, emphasizing that only official wills and documents matter

DirtFoot79 − Reminds me of my brother, about 10 years ago at a family dinner (I don't remember which holiday)

he asks me and my sister why we work so hard when we'll get all our parents money when they die.

Well I'm the executor of the estate and I've had several conversations about this with them.

We aren't going to be getting everything, a significant portion is going into a couple scholarship trusts,

and another significant chunk is going to the Canadian Kidney Foundation.

He wasn't so pleased to learn he's not going to be a millionaire any time soon. A few years ago he moved to the east coast about 1700 kms away.

I guess there's no point sucking up if your parents won't make you rich when they die.

Hush_of_Winter − My cousin (one of nine of us) said Grandma told her she was going to inherit my grandparents' house and land.

Grandpa died and left the business/building to my uncle, his partner. All else went to Grandma.

When she died, except for a few pieces of jewelry, all went to my aunt who had no children.

When she died, most was left to her estate, to be divided equally between the nine of us.

If we wanted something, we had to purchase it at the auction.

Like the rest of us, my cousin received 1/9 of the proceeds from the sale of the house & land. Moral: If it's not written in the will, don't count...

Many readers supported Grandpa’s decision to protect fairness and update his plans. But what do you think? Was Jake simply too confident, or did the family enable his expectations for years? Share your thoughts below!
