Woman Gives Her Ex-Friend a “Perfect” Reference, Then Watches Her Dream Job Slip Away

Friendships can survive a lot of things, but mixing personal relationships with professional opportunities can reveal a completely different side of someone.

Sometimes, helping a person succeed can become complicated when trust has already been broken.

The original poster (OP) once helped her longtime friend get career opportunities, but that support ended after her friend’s actions damaged OP’s professional reputation.

Years later, the same friend returned asking for help getting another job. OP agreed to provide a reference, but the way she handled the conversation left many people questioning her intentions.

Read on to see whether OP was simply being honest or quietly getting revenge.

Woman gives her former friend a carefully worded job reference

Woman Gives Her Ex-Friend a “Perfect” Reference, Then Watches Her Dream Job Slip Away
not the actual photo

'AITA for giving my ex-friend a glowing reference that accidentally tanked her dream job offer?'I have already posted the same post this one now has all the correct dialog.

Let’s start by saying: I didn’t lie. I just didn’t warn them. And maybe I

enjoyed it a little too much.

So I (28F) used to be best friends with “Marley” (28F). We met working

retail in college and stayed close through breakups, bad haircuts, and one

extremely chaotic roommate situation. Marley is the kind of person who

has main character energy — she’s magnetic, stylish, funny… and also a

complete snake when it suits her.

Anyway, two years ago, I got my first big girl job at a mid-sized marketing

firm. I worked my way up, made connections, and was starting to build

something I was really proud of.

Marley hated her job and asked if I could let her know if anything opened

up. She said she wanted to get into “branding,” and even though she had

no real experience, I gave her tips, helped with her resume, and even got

her a contract gig with a small client through my side hustle.

She completely half-assed the project. Turned stuff in late. Lied about

being sick, then posted stories from a bar. The client pulled out and I ended

up refunding them out of my own pocket. I told Marley it really hurt my rep.

She rolled her eyes and said, “It’s not that deep. They were probably

looking for a reason to bail anyway.”. Yeah. That was kind of the last straw.

I stopped working with her after that and slowly distanced myself. She

noticed. She got petty. Started making passive-aggressive posts, sending

“accidental” texts meant for someone else (like “I hate fake people who act

all professional but are actually jealous af”). Whatever.. We didn’t talk for

months.

Then last fall, out of nowhere, she emails me and asks if I could put in a

good word for her at my company — because she saw a job opening and

thought she’d be “a perfect fit.”. I stared at that email like it had personally

insulted my dog.. But I said, “Sure :)” and left it at that.. Here’s where it gets good.

The company actually did reach out — and here’s the thing: I know

someone who works in their hiring team. Not a close friend, but friendly

enough that they called me instead of just emailing a standard reference

form.. They asked, “So, what’s she like to work with?”. And I said, “She’s very

creative, has a lot of personality, and brings a unique energy to projects.”.

That’s it. That’s all I said.

No lies. Just… the truth she wanted to hear, delivered with no follow-up

praise. No “she’s reliable,” no “great teammate,” nothing about deadlines

or accountability. Just vague sparkle words.

Then I added, “I’d recommend giving her a small trial task — she really

shines when she can show what she brings to the table.”. I knew exactly

what I was doing.

Marley bombed the interview task. Missed the deadline, blamed unclear

instructions, and sent in a rushed, half-done version. The same behavior

from before — just now under a microscope.. My friend later told me,

“Yeah… she really tried to bluff her way through. It didn’t go well.”. Marley

didn’t get the job.

A week later, she posted some melodramatic Instagram story about “fake

friends” and “people who don’t want to see you win.” Then unfollowed me.

Now mutuals are split — some say I was being “sneaky” and should’ve just

refused to be a reference. Others say I was too generous.

So Reddit… AITA for letting my ex-friend blow her own shot at her dream

job — while technically giving her a glowing reference?. And if your reading

this charlottes I love you soo much. And stay petty

Sometimes the hardest betrayals come from people who once knew us best.

When someone we trusted damages our reputation, the pain is often not only about what happened, but about feeling that our kindness was taken for granted and never truly appreciated.

In this situation, the OP was not simply deciding whether to help an old friend find a job.

She was carrying years of frustration from a friendship where she felt she had repeatedly offered opportunities, guidance, and support, only to have those efforts dismissed.

Marley’s failure was not caused by a single comment from the OP; it came from a pattern of behavior that continued into the hiring process.

However, the emotional conflict comes from the fact that the OP intentionally chose a middle ground: she did not lie, but she also did not advocate for someone she no longer trusted.

A different perspective is that this story reflects the complicated space between forgiveness and accountability.

Many people assume helping someone means protecting them from consequences, especially when there is a shared history.

But professional environments often work differently.

A recommendation is not a favor owed because of a past friendship; it is an endorsement based on someone’s actual ability to perform.

The OP may have felt she was giving Marley the chance to prove herself without interfering, while others may view the lack of a warning as a quiet form of revenge.

This insight highlights the complicated part of the OP’s decision.

She was justified in refusing to provide a false recommendation, especially after previous professional damage caused by Marley’s actions.

However, intentionally creating a situation where someone is likely to fail can also keep the OP emotionally connected to a friendship that has already ended.

True distance often comes when a person no longer feels the need to prove a point.

The most important lesson is that boundaries do not require revenge.

If someone has shown they cannot be trusted professionally or personally, it is completely reasonable to step away and decline involvement.

A simple, honest refusal to recommend someone can protect both parties without carrying the emotional weight of trying to teach them a lesson.

Ultimately, the OP’s frustration is understandable because she was hurt by someone she once considered family.

But the strongest form of moving forward is often not watching someone fail; it is reaching a place where their choices no longer have the power to affect your peace.

Here’s the input from the crowd:

These commenters defended OP’s recommendation as honest, professional, and not sabotage

vbligh − Movin' in the shadows, bestie. Best moves of all and that

'recommendation' was Chef's Kiss spot on.

sevenumbrellas − NTA. Here's the thing. If you had refused to be a

reference, Marley still wouldn't have gotten the job, and she'd be dragging

your name around saying you wouldn't help her. It was incredibly poor

judgement to ask you to be a reference at all, given how badly things went

when you DID get her work. I don't think what you did was petty.

I think it was actually very professional. When someone is applying at your

company, your reference counts more. Plus, it can affect your reputation

negatively if you get a crappy person hired. You gave a truthful reference,

and you left the door open in case Marley had improved her work habits.

If she had actually been a good fit for the position, she would have

committed to doing a good job at the trial task. Any of your friends saying

you were being sneaky should explain what they thought you should have

done. You gave her a good, honest reference and a chance to show her skills.

Apprehensive_War9612 − You told them to give her a shot and she blew it.

If you had given her a glowing recommendation and she had been hired,

she’d have blown it AND your reputation would have taken a hit. You didn’t

impugn her in anyway. You said to try her out and she failed. That’s on her. NTA

Ginger630 − NTA! You didn’t lie. You actually said lovely things about her.

SHE failed the task. SHE chose to lie and make excuses. Not you. You did t

say one negative thing about her. I’d tell your mutuals exactly what you

said. Ask them where the problem is. If they don’t apologize, they aren’t

your friends either. Block her and them.

These commenters agreed Marley failed because of her own performance, not OP’s actions

Sorry-Scratch-3002 − NTA If you worded the way you wrote it was a good

word she asked. She got the opportunity to show her skills, which she

might have not gotten without those. It’s not your fault she can’t deliver

what she promised.

PuzzleheadedTap4484 − NTA. You didn’t say anything bad, in fact on paper

without tone it looks positive. She hung herself and showed everyone what

she was capable of. It’s not your fault her capability is half assed projects

and lying about her ability to do tasks. She did it all to herself.

_boo_bunny − NTA… You gave her exactly what she asked for she

fantastically failed herself. Absolutely wild.

These commenters argued the trial task revealed Marley’s true abilities and would have exposed problems later

rez2metrogirl − NTA. She screwed herself with the test, which is perfectly

normal in your industry. Honestly, you still did her a favor.

SpiderByt3s − NTA wouldn't have made it through the probationary period

at work anyway if she couldn't handle a trial task.

No-Function223 − Nta. If she had passed the interview task, then your

recommendation would have likely landed her the job. Failing that was her

own fault.

A friendship that started with years of memories eventually turned into a quiet battle of trust, professionalism, and revenge.

OP didn’t sabotage Marley with a lie; instead, she gave a carefully neutral recommendation and let Marley’s own work habits speak for themselves.

While some people felt OP should have refused to be a reference entirely, others argued that protecting someone’s career doesn’t mean pretending they are a great employee when past experiences suggest otherwise.

In the end, the biggest question isn’t whether OP was petty, but whether she crossed a line by staying silent.

Was this a justified consequence, or a revenge move disguised as honesty? Share your thoughts below!
