Man Hears His Childhood Bathroom Story In College, Then Realizes His Professor Was The Stranger

Some childhood memories disappear almost completely until one random detail brings them rushing back. What makes those moments even stranger is when the reminder comes from someone who was there too, years later and in a completely different setting.

One Reddit user remembered being around seven or eight when he copied a stranger’s behavior while using an unfamiliar hand dryer at a gas station. The interaction seemed odd enough to stick somewhere in the back of his mind, but he eventually forgot about it.

More than a decade later, while sitting in a college psychology lecture hundreds of miles away, his professor began telling a story that sounded strangely familiar. Scroll down to see why he suddenly realized he may have been part of an experiment without ever knowing it.

'Something I did as a kid ended up in a psychology lecture I sat in years later'

When is was 7-8 years old my family went on a road trip to another city a few hours away.

On the way we stopped at a gas station where I used the restroom.

When I went to dry my hands there was a man in front of me using an air hand dryer, something I had never seen before.

I watched him as he used the dryer so I could see how it was done, and I noticed that he was rubbing his hands together as he dried them.

That seemed a little weird but I figured he knew what he was doing, so when I got up to the dryer I did it the same way including rubbing...

I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the man was hanging around the door looking back at me.

I probably wouldn’t have remember the interaction at all, except it was a little off putting that the man was looking back at me.

I didn’t think he had bad intentions or anything, just thought it was odd, and once I climbed back in the car I shrugged it all off.

Fast forward 12-13 years and I’m sitting in a psychology course in college (abnormal psychology I think, but I tool 4-5 of them so I’m not entirely sure).

The professor is talking about monkey see monkey do phenomenon and mentions that he once performed his own experiment at a gas station restroom.

He says that he noticed a young boy watching him use an hand dryer, and he rubbed his hands together to see if the boy would do it also.

He peaked back before he left and saw that the young boy was indeed mimicking the hand rubbing! I was stunned.

I’d completely forgotten about that time when I was a kid and noticed the man watching me dry my hands,

but here i was many years later and hundreds of miles away from where it had happened, listening to the same story in a psychology class!

Unbelievable! The few people I’ve told this too in the years since haven’t seemed to react nearly as strongly to it as I did,

but it must be the biggest coincidence I’ve ever come across In my life..

Edit: I have been trying to get in contact with the professor, who is now a psychologist only and no longer faculty at the university.

So far no luck—the area has been hit by an ice storm and most businesses are closed right now.

I’m going to try to get a receptionist to give me his email once they reopen.

I will make an update post when I am able to get in contact with him.

Some childhood moments seem too small to matter until years later they suddenly return with an entirely different meaning.

The OP probably would have forgotten that gas-station bathroom completely if the stranger had not lingered near the door. Instead, a mildly strange memory survived just long enough to collide with an astonishing explanation more than a decade later.

The emotional appeal of the story comes from recognition. As a child, the OP saw an unfamiliar hand dryer and naturally copied the adult who appeared to know how it worked. The rubbing motion seemed unnecessary, but children routinely use nearby adults as models when they encounter something new.

The oddest part was the man looking back afterward. At seven or eight, the OP could not explain that behavior, so the moment remained filed away as slightly uncomfortable and unimportant.

Years later, hearing a professor describe deliberately testing whether a child would imitate him suddenly connected every detail.

A fresh perspective is that the coincidence feels extraordinary because both people preserved opposite halves of the same memory. The child remembered being watched. The adult remembered conducting an informal imitation experiment.

Neither had any reason to expect their paths would cross again, let alone inside a psychology classroom hundreds of miles away. What was a tiny demonstration for the professor became a forgotten childhood experience for the student, until chance placed them in the same room again.

Psychologist Albert Bandura’s work on social learning showed that people, especially children, acquire behavior partly through observing and imitating others.

His famous research demonstrated that learning does not always require direct instruction or rewards; seeing another person perform an action can be enough for that behavior to be reproduced.

Later research has continued to show how strongly observation influences children when they are uncertain about what to do.

That insight makes the original restroom interaction almost perfectly suited to a classroom example. The OP had never used that kind of dryer, so watching another person provided an immediate behavioral template.

Copying the unnecessary hand rubbing was precisely what made the observation interesting: the child reproduced not only the useful action but also an arbitrary detail.

The remarkable part, though, is not the psychology experiment itself. It is the probability of the same child later becoming one of that man’s students and recognizing the story. Memory is full of forgotten fragments, and most never receive an explanation.

This one did. Whether the professor eventually confirms every detail or not, the experience captures something wonderfully strange about human life: sometimes a moment that seemed meaningless at eight years old turns out to have been sitting in somebody else’s story all along.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters wanted OP to confirm whether the professor was actually the same person

[Reddit User] − This is the kind of content I come here for. Please tell me you told the prof you were the boy.

gurneyguy101 − Come on OP reply :) !RemindMe 12 hours

The-Soldier-in-White − This is really incomplete and a definite cliffhanger if you didn't confront (or reach out) the professor.

These Redditors loved how tiny, random moments can stay memorable for years

Sugalitestare − This is the kind of 'Slice of Life' reality that I find to be the most fascinating.

These incidences took up maybe a few seconds of OP's and the speakers life, yet they both still remember the interaction over a decade later.

Humans are strange in their dealings, but this particular benign strangeness is certainly my favorite.

[Reddit User] − This is not the same thing. But I once realized my father was on the same flight as my French teacher Years ago, my father was landing...

As the plane was about to touch the ground, for whatever reason the plane shot back up.

It was very sudden, no one expected it, and outright chaos and panic ensued on the plane, but everyone was okay

Maybe a few years after that happened, my French teacher told the exact same story.

Like down to the letter, and the time frame would have been the same as my dad being on that plane

This commenter made a ridiculous monkey joke about confronting the professor

rossiterpj − You should have banged your chest and thrown poop at your professor to show him just who the monkey was.

These commenters joked about the possibility that the professor’s story was coincidence or far stranger than it sounded

bloobidy − How weird would it be if he wasn’t the professor who did that. Lol. Like a complete coincidence.

50Bullseye − What are the odds the prof only actually tried his experiement once?

"For the last 15 years I've been handing out in public restrooms waiting for young boys to wash and dry their hands," is a super pervy story that makes him...

But isn't that more likely than "I tried this once, it worked, and I never tried it again. "

These users questioned whether rubbing hands under a dryer was unusual enough to prove anything

infadibulum − It sounds like there is a good chance it was him, but wait. .. Doesn't everyone rub their hands in an air dryer?

It's just logical because it will spread and thin out the water on your skin so it will evaporate faster. .

TheBlueLeopard − Isn't there a sign on the dryer instructing users to rub their hands together?

Coincidence or confirmed reunion? What would convince you?
