Bride Warns Spoiled Sister Not to Wear White, Then Plans a Red-Wine Backup Anyway

in Social Issues

Weddings can bring out old family dynamics in ways nobody expects, especially when one sibling has spent years getting away with behavior everyone else would be called out for.

Setting boundaries can feel necessary, but revenge plans can create a whole new problem.

The original poster (OP) is planning her wedding and already worries that her much younger sister will try to make herself the center of attention.

After hearing that her sister intends to wear white, OP decided she needed a backup plan in case the warning is ignored. Her idea involves red wine, water guns, and a group of willing groomsmen.

Some friends think that would be cruel, while OP believes her sister would only have herself to blame. Read on to see whether others think this plan goes too far.

not the actual photo

'WIBTA if I gave my fiances groomsmen water guns filled with red wine to soak my little sister on our wedding day?'

So bit of back story, my (31f) little sister C (21f) is 10 years younger than me and the baby of

the family. Ever since she was born she has been spoilt rotten. Especially by my mum. She

could literally get away with m__der in our mum's eyes. When ever she did anything wrong as

a kid she used to tell our mum that it was either me or one of our other siblings (there's 8 of

us) that did it not her and mum would believe her. Anything she ever wanted she would get (still does).

Now on to the issue at hand. My fiance and I are getting married in 2 years. We've set the

date and are now starting our planning. I have 5 bridesmaids, he has 5 groomsmen. C is not

in our wedding party. Recently, C got a lift from my best friend I (34m) to go for a night out. C

had already been drinking before going. The next day, I's mum called me and told me that C

had been speaking to I about my wedding and had told him that she was planning on

wearing a WHITE dress to my wedding! Now I know what people are going to say, "she was

drunk, she probably didn't mean it". Wrong. C likes to be the centre of attention. She totally

will do this. I phoned my older sister (V) who is my MOH, and told her what C is planning. She

told me not to worry because mum would never let her do that. I don't believe this for a

second because mum let's C do whatever she wants. So, I told my fiance that I want to give

his groomsmen water guns filled with red wine on the day of our wedding incase she does

turn up in white. He's all for it. He doesn't particularly like C for various reasons. I told a

couple of friends that I'm going to do it and I've been told that I shouldn't because that's a

horrible thing to do to anyone, especially my little sister, and I'd be ruining a dress that she's

paid for. I have warned C not to wear white to my wedding so I feel like if she does then she's

doing it to hurt me. But I don't know if that would make me look bad. Would it make me the

AH?. Edited to add. I have said infront of my mum, C and V that this will happen

Also edited to add: I posted this on a FB group before posting here and I had alot of

comments suggesting that I hate C and/or resent her. This is absolutely not the case. I love

my little sister and want her to be at my wedding and celebrating our special day with us. I

just don't want her drama

Few family conflicts are really about the dress, the seat, or the single dramatic moment everyone remembers afterward.

Often, they are about years of feeling overshadowed, dismissed, or forced to accommodate one person because “that’s just how they are.”

In OP’s case, the fear that her younger sister might wear white to the wedding carries the weight of a much older family pattern.

OP does not seem to hate her sister. In fact, she repeatedly says she wants her there.

What she fears is being placed in the familiar position of watching C break a boundary while their mother excuses it.

That history explains why the possible white dress feels less like a fashion mistake and more like a deliberate challenge.

OP is trying to protect a once-in-a-lifetime event from becoming another situation where everyone revolves around C’s behavior.

A different perspective, though, is that the red-wine plan could accidentally give C exactly what OP fears she wants: attention.

If C appeared in white and several groomsmen dramatically sprayed her with wine, the story of the wedding might quickly become “the fight with the sister” rather than the marriage itself.

Retaliation can feel satisfying beforehand, but it also turns a boundary violation into a public spectacle and gives both sides something to resent long afterward.

That insight makes OP’s anxiety much easier to understand.

She is not reacting only to something C might do two years from now.

She is reacting to a lifetime of seeing boundaries become negotiable whenever her younger sister pushed hard enough.

But breaking that family pattern may require doing something different from the old cycle rather than escalating it.

A more effective plan would be simple and unemotional: tell C clearly that white is not acceptable, make sure the parents know the rule, and designate one trusted person to handle it if necessary.

If C arrives in an inappropriate dress, she can be asked to change, cover it, or leave. That protects the wedding without destroying clothing or creating a scene.

OP is justified in wanting one day where her sister’s drama does not become everyone else’s responsibility.

The strongest boundary, however, is usually the one that removes attention from disruptive behavior instead of rewarding it with an even bigger performance.

Let’s dive into the reactions:

These commenters favored security and refusing entry over creating a dramatic wine-spraying scene

Major_Zucchini5315 − I am all for spilling red wine on someone, but I fear that spraying it out

of a water gun might cause some innocent people to be caught in the crossfire. Instead hire

security and give explicit instructions that ANYONE who shows up in white is not allowed entry.

Prior to the wedding, make sure everyone knows about the dress code, and reiterate that no

one is to wear white. That way she can’t say that she didn’t know. Don’t let anyone know

about the security you’re hiring, let that be a surprise if she decides to try to be the main

character in your wedding day.

Puzzleheaded_Gear622 − The problem with letting her come to the wedding in a white dress

and having the groomsmen armed with water guns and red wine is that this will define your

wedding. You are still letting her be the center of attention. This is what people will remember

of your wedding. I would tell her she's not coming and I would have security at the wedding.

Your parents might not show up a lot of people might be pissed but at least it would be your

wedding and you wouldn't be trying to wrestle the attention back from her. Go ahead and

nip it in the bud now and let her know that she's not going to be there.

AniCameo999 − Having 5 groomsmen spray a young woman with water guns is borderline

abusive even if she is a complete btch & sht disturber. Also possibly very triggering to

anyone present who has a history of abuse. Be mature and the better person: Tell her if she

shows up in white she is not allowed in and be ready to enforce this rule.

My_best_friend_GH − Why don’t you just have her escorted out if she shows up in white?

Odd_Beautiful2506 − Just uninvite her and hire security. Doing this will allow her to play

victim and get the attention she wants.

These commenters cheered the petty revenge idea and felt the sister deserved consequences

Safe_Space_Ship − Why waste wine? Water with fabric colorants, different colors! Make her

bright as a clown she would be for all the wedding.

Chehairazode − NTA. .. Do it. Karma is a b__ch, and it's time your sister met her. ..

grumpymuppett − F__k around and find out. Actions have consequences, and sometimes said

consequences come in water guns.

JoyPill15 − Ignore your friends. Spray that b__ch if she shows up in white. And when you're

done, collect her tears for the speech and toast at the reception. You should also buy her a t-

shirt that says "this is my 'I'm an attention-seeking crybaby' shirt"

These commenters supported enforcing the dress code after giving everyone clear advance warning

gringaellie − Personally I would let everyone who RSVPs yes know that anyone who turns up

wearing white or cream or anything that looks vaguely bridal will be squirted with water guns

filled with red wine. That way your little sister can't wail and moan that she didn't know the

dress was not acceptable.

Djinsation − NTA. Warning has been served. Your wedding, your rules.

notbonusmom − Lol this is a COMMON response to someone wearing white at your

wedding. Your friends sayings it's horrible need to understand she brought it upon herself.

How many stories have we all heard about accidentally spilling wine on the white dress

wearing offender? It's only horrible if a person does the one thing that's known you shouldn't

do at a wedding, and then it's deserved.

OP’s wedding planning took an unexpected turn when a long history of family favoritism collided with a potential bridal drama.

After years of feeling like her younger sister was allowed to get away with anything, OP is worried that her wedding could become another situation where C tries to take the spotlight.

Her solution was to prepare a dramatic response if C shows up wearing white, but some people feel that turning the moment into a public spectacle would only create more chaos.

Do you think OP is justified in preparing for her sister’s possible behavior, or would the “wine gun” plan make her the one causing drama on her wedding day? Share your thoughts below!
