Bride Finds Out Her Future Sister-in-Law Copied Her Wedding Dress Before She Even Walked Down the Aisle

A wedding dress is not just a piece of clothing to many people.

It often represents years of imagining a specific moment, so it makes sense that Ella felt upset when someone close to her chose something almost identical before she even had her wedding day.

OP’s aunt had been planning her wedding for nearly two years and had already found a dress that felt personal and meaningful.

Then her future sister-in-law chose a nearly identical style and brushed off her concerns as “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

While copying a general trend is one thing, wearing a dress that closely mirrors a family member’s wedding gown can easily feel like crossing a personal boundary.

Scroll down to see what Reddit had to say about this family wedding drama.

Bride-to-be is upset when her future sister-in-law chooses an almost identical wedding dress before her big day

'AITA for telling my brother’s fiancée she can’t wear a dress that looks just like mine?'

So, I Ella(28F) am getting married this October. My fiancé (29M) and I have

been planning for almost two years, and I finally found the dress last

winter. It’s a very specific style satin, sweetheart neckline, and dramatic

lace sleeves, I cried when I put it on. It’s unique, romantic, and very “me.”

My older brother (31M) got engaged a few months ago to “Sophie” (30F).

She’s always been competitive with me? Not outright mean, but if I get a

certain bag, suddenly she’s “always wanted” it. If I post a hairstyle, she’s

suddenly “been thinking about trying” the same thing. I’ve just brushed it off.

Anyway, last week we had a small family dinner at my parents’ house, and

Sophie excitedly announced that she’d picked her wedding dress (they’re

getting married next year). She pulled up a photo on her phone and my jaw

actually dropped. It was almost identical to mine same fabric, same

neckline, same lace sleeves, same long train the only difference was a

slightly different beading pattern.

I tried to keep my face neutral but my mom immediately glanced at me like,

oh no. My fiancé actually said, “Wait, isn’t that basically Ella’s dress?” Sophie

laughed and said, “Yeah! When I saw hers, I realized how gorgeous that

style is. I hope you don’t mind imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!”

I told her, as calmly as I could, that I did mind. I said I’d spent a long time

finding something that felt special to me and I wanted to be the only one

wearing the dress. She rolled her eyes and said, “It’s not like people will

remember in a year.”

I told her she was free to wear whatever she wanted, but that I felt it was

disrespectful to copy my dress so closely before I’ve even walked down the

aisle. She got defensive and accused me of trying to “control her choices.”

My brother later texted me saying I’d “hurt her feelings” and that it’s “just a dress.”

Now my mom’s on my side, my dad says it’s not worth the drama, and my

brother isn’t speaking to me at the moment. I feel like this is common

sense, but maybe I overreacted?. btw she was at the bridal fitting. So AITA?

THIS IS NOT MY STORY! i am 15 and my aunt is getting married. She said

she wanted an outside opinion so i asked if i could share it here. She wrote

this and sent it to me.

A wedding dress is rarely just a piece of clothing.

For many people, it becomes a symbol of a moment they have imagined for years, representing personal style, memories, and the feeling of being completely themselves on one of the biggest days of their life.

In Ella’s situation, the conflict was not simply about satin, lace sleeves, or a train.

The emotional weight came from feeling like something deeply personal was being copied before she even had the chance to experience it.

She had spent years planning her wedding, searched carefully for a dress that felt unique, and attached a strong emotional meaning to that choice.

Seeing someone close to her intentionally choose a nearly identical design likely felt less like admiration and more like losing ownership over a special memory.

At the same time, this situation has another layer. Sophie may genuinely see the dress as a compliment rather than an attack.

Some people view fashion inspiration as harmless, especially when there is no rule preventing two people from wearing similar styles.

From her perspective, she may have simply found a design she loved and wanted to recreate the feeling it gave her.

The disagreement comes from the fact that one person sees imitation as appreciation, while the other experiences it as a boundary being crossed.

Applied to Ella’s situation, the dress represents more than fashion. It represents individuality.

However, this does not automatically mean Sophie intended to hurt her. The important distinction is between intention and impact.

Sophie may not have meant to upset Ella, but the impact was still that Ella felt dismissed and replaced in a moment that mattered deeply to her.

The challenge for the family is avoiding turning the dress into a bigger battle over who is “right.”

Ella’s feelings are understandable, especially because Sophie had already shown a pattern of following her choices.

However, Sophie’s wedding will also be her own special event, and she may not view a similar dress as taking anything away from Ella’s day.

Ultimately, the healthiest solution may come from recognizing that two things can be true at once: Ella can feel hurt by the similarity, and Sophie can still have the freedom to choose a dress she loves. T

he most meaningful part of a wedding is not whether someone else wears something similar, but the memories created with the people who truly support the couple.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters believed the dress was not a small issue

MerelyWhelmed1 − It is not "just a dress. " It's dress for one of the most

important occasions. However, if the brother feels it's "just a dress," then

he should tell his bride-to-be to pick a different one. NTA.

AltruisticCableCar − Well, if I read the timeline right your aunt will get

married before Sophie. If so, there's no reason to really care since if people

recognize the dress as basically Ella's they'll probably find it very odd that

Sophie went with almost the same dress.

As in, no one will look at Ella any different but Sophie might get a few side

eyes and some whispers. Ella is allowed to not like it, but yeah, she won't

be the bad guy in anyone's eyes here, or the weird one.

polynomialpurebred − NTA. Does your brother really want to think of you

(aunt, not 15 yo OP) when he sees his bride walking down the aisle? That’s

a little yucky. Put that image in brother’s head.

These commenters advised OP to stop sharing personal plans

Broad_Pomegranate141 − Stop sharing your life with her. She’ll steal your

baby names and nursery decor too. Feed her lies and laugh when the truth

comes out. Don’t tell her you’re trying for a baby, going to Paris for your

honeymoon—stop every bit of it.

cstorm86 − Also, why did you even invite her to your dress fitting. That was

a dumb decision. She copies you, so you give her ammunition.

Maximum-Company2719 − It's pretty weird and sad in a way. Don't share

any information about your plans anymore. Give her the wrong wedding

venue, caterer, florist, cake bakery, and stuff. And definitely don't share

baby names if you get pregnant. Or give her the wrong names.

These commenters felt guests would likely notice the similarity and view Sophie as the one copying rather than judging Ella

trinlayk − Everyone who recognizes the dress will know who is the

copycat… If you don’t make it a big deal, she’ll be the one being laughed at.

DznyMa − The wedding guests that go to both weddings will seriously

question her choice.

These commenters suggested responding with humor and framing the copying behavior as obvious imitation

EliGrrl − The full quote is : "imitation is tbe sincerest form of flattery that

mediocrity can pay to greatness" - Oscar Wilde. You can always remind her of that

nursepenguin36 − Honestly I’d have told her “wow I’m so flattered that you

think so highly of my style that you so frequently decide to just copy me.

But don’t you ever want to do anything original? With our weddings so

close it’s going to be rather obvious you copied me. But it’s up to you of course. ”

MundaneAd8695 − I would just be petty and the next time jt comes up, just

say that you (your aunt) are so flattered by his she looks up to you and

imitates you, because it can be so very intimidating to pick out your own

style, and that you’re happy to help her feel more confident in her choices.

A wedding dress is supposed to be one of the most personal choices a bride makes, so the OP was understandably hurt when her future sister-in-law chose a nearly identical design after seeing hers.

While some felt that dresses are just fabric and everyone deserves to wear what makes them happy, others believed the timing and similarity crossed a boundary.

With years of subtle competition already involved, the dress became more than just a dress.
