Best Friend Lied About Her to Steal Her Dream Job, Then HR Exposed the Ugly Truth

Sometimes, the people we trust the most are the ones who can hurt us the deepest.

Competition can happen between friends, but there is a big difference between wanting the same opportunity and secretly trying to destroy someone else’s chances.

OP had spent months working toward her dream job and believed her best friend Jessie would understand how much it meant to her.

When they both applied for the same position, she expected a fair competition.

But after the hiring decision was made, OP discovered that the situation was not as simple as it seemed.

Read on to find out what happened after OP learned what Jessie had allegedly said during the interview process.

'AITA for exposing my best friend's lie that cost her the job and ruined her career?'

So, I (28F) need some advice because I honestly feel like I might have gone

too far, but I can’t shake the feeling that I did what I had to do.

Here’s the backstory: I had been working my b__t off for months applying,

interviewing, and networking to land my dream job at a major tech

company. It was the kind of opportunity I had been aiming for my entire

career. The pay was great, the growth potential was huge, and honestly, it

was everything I had worked for.

Now, my best friend Jessie (29F) and I have been close for 10 years. We’ve

been through everything together, and she knew how badly I wanted this

role. I helped her with her own job search in the past and even gave her tips

and advice when she was looking for new opportunities. So, when I found

out that she had applied for the same job, I wasn’t worried. I thought,

"Okay, may the best person win.". But then, things started getting weird.

We both got through the interview process, and after some really tough

rounds, I got an offer. I was beyond excited. It felt like all my hard work was

finally paying off. But Jessie’s reaction was... off. Instead of being excited

for me, she seemed distant and almost bitter. She kept making offhand

comments like, "I’m sure you’ll be amazing at the job" but with a tone that

felt cold, not supportive.

A couple of days later, I got an email from HR saying that they had "decided

to move forward with another candidate," but they’d keep me in mind for

future openings. I was confused, but they assured me it was just a formality

—like they were still considering me in case things changed. No big deal, right?

Well, then I found out through a mutual friend that Jessie had actually

gotten the job. I felt completely blindsided. I mean, I knew we were both

interviewing, but to hear she got it after everything I’d done to land it—it stung.

I confronted her, and she tried to play it off like it was nothing. "Yeah, I got

it, but I think I’m more qualified than you for this role, don’t you think?" she

said, which already had me feeling some kind of way.

But when I pressed her, it became clear that something was really off. I

found out that during her final interview, Jessie had lied about me. She

told the hiring manager things that were not only false but deliberately

intended to destroy my chances at the job. She said I had "serious issues

with authority," was "known to undermine my colleagues," and that I had a

"toxic attitude" and wasn’t a “team player.” She also claimed I was

“constantly unhappy” at my job and that I was “planning on leaving soon anyway.”

None of this was true. Not even a little bit. Jessie knew I loved my current

job, and I had always been a team player. She had to have made it all up just

to make herself look better.

When I confronted her about it, she didn’t apologise. She said, "I did what I

had to do. It’s business. It’s not personal." And that was it.

I was furious. Not just because of the lies, but because of the sheer

audacity of it. She used our friendship as a stepping stone, stabbed me in

the back, and then tried to justify it as if it were no big deal.

I knew I couldn’t just let her get away with it, so I decided to reach out to

the company. I didn’t go into all the personal details about our friendship,

but I did tell HR that there had been some misinformation shared during

Jessie’s interview about me. I provided evidence that disproved the claims

she made—emails, performance reviews, and even testimony from

colleagues who could vouch for me.

It felt dirty, honestly. I didn’t want to get her fired or ruin her life. But I also

knew that what she had done was wrong on a professional and personal

level. The company needed to know the truth. I figured they’d just take

note of the feedback and that would be the end of it.. But then came the

unexpected fallout.

A few days later, I get an email from HR. They thanked me for the

information, but here’s the bombshell: They told me they had reversed

their hiring decision because of the false statements Jessie had made

about me. They said they had done an internal review of her interview and

found that her claims were unsubstantiated and damaging to their hiring process.

And that’s when I found out that not only had they rescinded the job offer,

but they had also decided to terminate her. It turned out that the company

had a zero-tolerance policy for dishonesty in interviews and had flagged

her as a liability. They said that in light of the evidence I’d provided, they

could no longer justify hiring her.

I was honestly shocked. I didn’t expect things to escalate to that point. But

it didn’t stop there. Jessie called me immediately after she found out. She

was furious. She called me everything from a "jealous, vindictive" person to

a "backstabbing, petty liar." She screamed at me over the phone and told

me I had "ruined her career" and that I would “never be forgiven.”

But the worst part? She went around telling everyone that I had "had her

fired" and that I was just “salty” about losing the job. She told our friends

that I was a "sore loser" and "couldn’t handle the competition," trying to

paint me as the villain.

And while I can’t deny I felt a little bit of satisfaction when I heard she’d

been let go, the guilt started creeping in. Was I wrong for going to HR? Did

I go too far? I didn’t want her to lose her job, but I felt like I had to do

something after she intentionally sabotaged me.

Now I’m wondering—AITA for exposing her lies? I feel like I did what I had

to do, but part of me wonders if I could have handled it differently?

Sometimes the deepest betrayals are not caused by losing an opportunity, but by discovering that someone close to us was willing to damage our chances to improve their own.

It hurts differently when the person competing against us is someone who knows our dreams, our struggles, and how hard we worked to reach them.

In this situation, the OP was not simply disappointed that her friend got a job she wanted.

She was dealing with the emotional shock of realizing that a decade-long friendship may have been viewed very differently by Jessie.

Competition between friends can happen naturally, and both people are allowed to pursue the same opportunity.

The painful part was not that Jessie succeeded; it was that she allegedly tried to make herself look stronger by creating a false image of the OP.

For the OP, reporting the situation was about correcting misinformation that could have damaged her professional reputation, not simply taking revenge after losing.

However, there is another side worth considering.

Ambition can bring out complicated emotions, especially when people feel insecure or afraid of falling behind.

Jessie may have convinced herself that she was simply fighting for her future, using the mindset that career decisions are “business, not personal.”

But there is a major difference between presenting your own strengths and attacking another person’s character.

Healthy competition allows two people to succeed based on their abilities; unhealthy competition tries to remove the other person from the race.

This perspective helps explain why the company’s reaction was so serious.

The issue was not that Jessie competed with a friend.

Hiring decisions depend on reliable information, and knowingly spreading false claims about another candidate can undermine the fairness of that process.

The OP did not directly decide Jessie’s outcome; she provided evidence and allowed the company to evaluate what happened.

At the same time, the OP’s feelings of satisfaction after seeing consequences are understandable.

When someone hurts us intentionally, part of us naturally wants that person to recognize the damage they caused.

But the most important part of the story is that the OP did not create the consequences alone.

Jessie’s own choices played a major role in what happened afterward.

This story raises a difficult question about ambition and loyalty: how much are we willing to sacrifice to win?

Success can be meaningful, but when it requires destroying someone who trusted us, the victory often comes with a much higher cost.

Sometimes the healthiest response to betrayal is not revenge, but allowing the truth to speak for itself.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters supported responding to the former friend with her own words

ApartmentMaterial950 − "When I confronted her about it, she didn’t

apologise. She said, "I did what I had to do. It’s business. It’s not personal. "

And that was it. " I would say these words right back to her.

Anniebelle1020 − Tell her “you did what you had to do. It’s business, not

personal “. She’s no friend. You can walk away with your head high.

These commenters questioned whether the story was realistic

Character-Toe-2137 − I work in HR and seriously doubt this story is true.

You don't extend offers to candidates if you are still interviewing. You

don't extend offers to candidates who bad mouth other candidates,

generally, especially when they a) say they know the specific candidate and

b) are aware they have an offer.

If we accept the possibility that a manager went rogue, then it's likely OP

hasn't heard back because hiring manager has also been fired for exposing

the company to a lot of potential legal liability and/or HR is consulting with

Legal to determine if they have to renew the initial offer to OP or can they

quietly just close the posting completely and start over since HR is not

going to want either of these people as employees.

This whole post, if true, smells of unprofessional behavior from all

involved. If true, OP would be advised to decline the offer and find a more

ethical company to work for. And more ethical people to be friends with.

Morrolan_V − I call absolute BS on this story. 1. An interviewer would never

ask a candidate about another candidate for the same job. 2. If a candidate

voluntarily spoke up to bad mouth another candidate in the interview it

would be an immediate disqualification.

3. None of the things that the alleged "friend" allegedly said in the alleged

interview are matters of fact that can be demonstrated to be lies. This

whole thing is a giant crock.

caribbean_sun − Why in earth would they ask a candidate about another

candidate competing for the same job? ??? It’s like they were encouraging

her to talk trash. I wouldn’t have hired someone so willing to trash talk

their friend either. But that’s me .

These commenters questioned the timeline

mayhembang − This sounds so fake. They are both applying for a job at

company that neither of them currently work. It is not an internal job

opportunity. If that is the case then how can a company rescind the job

offer and also terminate you? It is one or the other. This absolutely does

not make any sense.

Jazzy404404 − So no one got the job?

Adorable-Sentence-89 − Also, they offered you the job, and then unoffered

it after she interviewed? Why would they interview her after they made

you an offer? I don’t get it

These commenters accused the story of being fabricated or designed as exaggerated online drama

notsoreligiousnow − YTA for posting a fake story. Were you just posting

about prom?

Content-Potential191 − As AI ragebait goes, not too shabby.

A dream job turned into a painful betrayal when the person closest to the OP chose competition over friendship.

While some may argue that reporting Jessie’s actions caused consequences that went too far, others believe honesty was the only way to repair the damage done.

If someone intentionally lied to destroy your career opportunity, would you stay silent to protect the friendship?

Or would you defend your own reputation no matter what happened next?

The biggest question remains: was this revenge, or simply accountability catching up with someone who crossed the line? Share your thoughts below.
