He Was Asked to Drive Six Hours at 4 A.M. to Pick Up His Aunt, So He Refused and Told His Family to Find Another Way

Graduating from university is supposed to come with at least a little time to breathe.

For this 22-year-old man, that was exactly what he had planned.

He had recently graduated, had some free time before his next commitments, and was preparing for a flight abroad the following day. Then his uncle made a scheduling mistake that suddenly threatened to turn one of his last free nights into a six-hour overnight road trip.

His uncle’s wife was flying into Düsseldorf Airport at around 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

The uncle had mistakenly believed she was arriving Monday, so he had taken Monday off work.

When he realized the flight was actually Tuesday, he started asking relatives if someone else could pick her up.

The young man was one of those relatives.

There was just one problem.

He lived about three hours away.

'AITA for refusing to drive 3 hours each way at 4am to pick up my uncle's wife from the airport?'

I'm 22M, recently graduated, and currently have some free time. My uncle's wife is flying into Düsseldorf Airport on Tuesday at around 4am.

My uncle mistakenly thought she was arriving Monday, so he took Monday off work.

Now that he knows the flight is Tuesday, he's asking family members to pick her up instead.

I live in the about a 3-hour drive from Düsseldorf, so this would mean roughly 6 hours of driving in the middle of the night.

I suggested that he could ask his manager whether he could move his day off from Monday to Tuesday.

He works at a job where him not coming suddenly wouldn't be THAT big of a problem (Bit of an assumption here on my part).

He doesn't want to inconvenience his coworkers, which I understand, but I don't think that means the inconvenience should automatically become mine.

The thing is also, he didn't try and get rejected, he just said he doesn't want to ask because "he can't do that to them" in a kind of embarrassing...

My sister (21) has offered to go pick them up, but she's angry that I don't want to come with her and says that she isn't quite sure of her...

She says that because I'm free, and have no work commitments right now, it's basically my responsibility to help.

The thing is, I simply don't want to spend my free time driving 6 hours at 4am.

I'm SUPER recently graduated and would like to enjoy some of my time off and prepare for my own flight abroad the day after (Wednesday).

There's also some history. My uncle has had some problems, and I've lent him money multiple times to help him get out of problem-related debt.

He's paid previous loans back, but the most recent loan was quite high. So I've already gone out of my way to help him financially quite a bit.

I'm not saying he owes me a favour because I lent him money, and neither do I use this against him.

I'm saying this situation feels frustrating because I've repeatedly helped him, and now I'm being made to feel selfish for declining one more favour.

I understand that he doesn't want to burden his workplace. But I don't think that means I'm obligated to take on the burden instead.

Am I wrong, do I need to feel bad for not wanting to go, and suck it up and go? Or do I keep my own stance and not go.

Any thoughts are appreciated.. Edit: I need to leave at 4AM if not earlier to arrive for her arrival on time, my mistake.

A Six-Hour Drive Because Someone Read the Date Wrong

For him to arrive at the airport on time, he would have to leave around 4 a.m. or earlier, depending on the timing.

That meant roughly six hours of driving there and back, in the middle of the night.

He suggested what seemed like the obvious solution.

Why not ask his uncle’s manager whether he could move his day off from Monday to Tuesday?

His uncle apparently did not want to do that.

The uncle was worried about inconveniencing his coworkers and felt uncomfortable asking.

The nephew understood that.

But he also couldn’t understand why his uncle’s discomfort with asking his employer automatically meant that someone else had to take on the inconvenience instead.

There was another option.

The uncle’s wife could presumably find another way from the airport.

There is a train station directly underneath Düsseldorf Airport, and other transportation options were also available.

But the family seemed to be leaning toward asking relatives to make the trip.

And the nephew simply didn’t want to do it.

His Sister Thought He Should Help Because He Was Free

His 21-year-old sister volunteered to drive to the airport.

But she wasn’t entirely comfortable making the trip alone and wanted her brother to come with her.

That created another argument.

She believed that because he was currently between commitments and technically had free time, helping was basically his responsibility.

He disagreed.

Being unemployed for a short period after graduation did not mean every available hour belonged to his family.

He wanted to enjoy some of his time off.

He also had preparations to make for his own flight abroad on Wednesday.

The idea of spending an entire night driving several hours to an airport and then immediately returning home was not appealing.

And there was another reason the request felt particularly frustrating.

He had already helped his uncle financially several times.

His uncle had previously struggled with debt, and the nephew had lent him money more than once to help him get through those problems. The uncle had repaid earlier loans, but the most recent loan was a significant amount.

The nephew wasn’t saying that his uncle owed him a favor because of the money.

He specifically didn’t want to turn their financial history into a scorecard.

But it did make the current situation feel different.

He had already gone out of his way to help this family member.

Now he was being made to feel selfish because he didn’t want to volunteer for another major inconvenience.

Was Saying No Actually Selfish?

That was the part he struggled with.

He knew his uncle had made a genuine mistake.

He knew his sister was nervous about driving alone.

He knew his aunt needed to get from the airport to wherever she was staying.

But none of those facts changed the basic situation.

The flight had been booked.

The wrong day had been taken off.

And now everyone was trying to solve the problem.

He just didn’t believe the solution had to be him.

There is an important difference between helping family during an emergency and automatically becoming responsible whenever someone else makes a planning mistake.

A missed date on a flight itinerary might create a headache.

But it does not necessarily create an obligation for a relative to spend six hours driving through the night.

The nephew also had his own plans and responsibilities, even if he happened to have a few days of free time.

Free time is still time.

The Family Was Asking for a Favor, Not Enforcing a Duty

One reason these situations become emotionally complicated is that families can blur the difference between a request and an expectation.

His uncle was allowed to ask.

His sister was allowed to ask him to accompany her.

But he was equally allowed to say no.

The fact that he was available did not make him responsible.

And the fact that his sister volunteered to make the trip did not give her the right to volunteer her brother’s time as well.

There was also a reasonable compromise available.

His aunt could potentially take a train, arrange another form of transportation, stay near the airport until her husband was available, or the uncle could simply ask his employer whether the day off could be moved.

None of those options were particularly glamorous.

But neither was spending six hours on the road in the middle of the night.

Here's how people reacted to the post:

Several commenters said they would not make a six-hour round trip to pick someone up from an airport under these circumstances.

Wild_Ticket1413 − I only read the first two paragraphs, but: NTA, that is a ridiculous ask.

javlafan2 − Auntie should check into a motel at the airport and her husband can come for her the next day.

Thefarrquad − NTA, the lack of planning on their part, is not an emergency on yours. Also your sister volunteering her time is kind, but she doesn't get to volunteer...

Others pointed out that Düsseldorf Airport has a train station directly underneath it, making public transportation a particularly obvious alternative.

Buckleupbuttercup77 − NTA. Grown-ass adults who fly are responsible for getting to and from the airport. Other people are not required to step up because those adults did not plan....

Turbulent_Guest402 − can‘t she take a train or a bus ?

shadowimage − Hey OP, I don't know about you, but people who owe me money are at the absolute bottom of the list for favors. Has he offered to at...

softtpeonyyy − NTA. Uncle messed up his schedule. That’s not your problem to fix with a 6 hour night drive right before your trip. You’ve helped him enough already. Sister...

OfAnOldRepublic − There is a train station right underneath the airport in Dusseldorf. Problem solved.

And if you resent your uncle for borrowing money, stop lending it to him. Once he pays back the most recent loan have a polite conversation with him that you...

He's not really wrong for asking, and you're not wrong for saying no, so NAH.

Sebscreen − NTA. You don't even need to justify yourself, offer alternatives, or prove that you care even if you can't help this time. No means no. Not your mistake,...

EmIsLoCo − NTA 6 hours round trip is insanity. He can ask work or she can uber.

There is nothing wrong with helping family.

Sometimes you absolutely should rearrange your plans when someone genuinely needs you.

But helping someone and being responsible for fixing their mistake are two different things.

This man had already helped his uncle financially and was preparing for his own trip. He was not refusing to help because he hated his aunt or wanted his uncle to suffer.

He simply did not want to spend six hours driving through the night because someone else had mixed up Monday and Tuesday.

His sister could make her own decision about whether to go.

His uncle could ask his employer.

His aunt could look into transportation.

There were options.

The one option that did not need to happen was turning a 22-year-old’s free time into a family obligation.

Sometimes saying “I can’t do that” isn’t selfish.

It is just a boundary.

Would you make the six-hour overnight drive for a family member, or would you tell them to find another way?
