MIL Books Hawaii Trip With Toddler Without Permission, Then Takes Her Before Mom Wakes Up

When it comes to parenting, boundaries are not just about personal preferences.

They are about trust, communication, and making sure both parents have a say in decisions involving their child.

Things can become especially complicated when a family member feels entitled to step into a parental role.

OP already struggled with her mother-in-law being overly involved, but she never expected things to reach this point.

After MIL planned a major trip with OP’s young daughter without asking either parent, OP immediately pushed back.

However, the situation became much more serious when she woke up and discovered her daughter was gone.

Scroll down to find out what happened after OP faced this shocking situation.

Mother refuses to let her mother-in-law take her toddler on a surprise vacation

'AITA for confronting my mother-in-law after she tried to take my daughter on a surprise vacation without asking?'

So, this happened recently, and I need some perspective.

I have a 3-year-old daughter let's call her Lena, and while my husband (21m)

and I(20F) work, she spends her days with my mother-in-law. Now, my MIL

is... let's say, very hands-on. She's always been involved, but lately, she's

been crossing boundaries left and right.

The other day, she called me to say she had booked a trip to Hawaii for

next month. Sounds nice, right? Well, here's the kicker: she booked it for

herself, my daughter, and her husband. No mention of me or my husband.

I was floored. My daughter has never stayed overnight anywhere except

our home. And now, my MIL thinks it's okay to take her across the country

without even consulting us?

I told her, firmly, that this was not happening. She hung up on me, and a

few minutes later, she called my husband, calling me a bad mother for not

letting our daughter experience things.

My husband thinks we should just let it go to avoid drama, but I can't just

let this slide. I feel like I'm losing control over my own child's life.. So,

Reddit, AITA for standing my ground and saying no to this surprise vacation?

UPDATE: Thank you all for the comments! My husband and I have had

multiple issues over this and this isn't the first time MIL had done stuff like

this. Husband and I have been together since we were 13 and 14. Not my

first rodeo. But, however i woke up yesterday morning, not to my daughter

climbing on me and husband which she normally does, I looked over and

my husband wasn't in bed which is unusual, I got up to check on our

daughter and she wasn't there. Panicked i called him and he said that his

mom took her in the early hours to Hawaii without telling me, i kept asking

is he let her, he would not respond always changed the subject. I don't

know whether to go to my MIL or the police? since it's my MIL and don't

want to ruin my marriage. but i need my daughter back, she's probably terrified. What do i do?

When it comes to children, the deepest fear many parents carry is not simply losing control, but feeling that someone has taken away their ability to protect the person they love most.

A parent’s boundaries around their child are often tied to safety, trust, and the belief that major decisions should be made together.

For the OP, this was never just about a vacation. It was about discovering that someone else had made a life-changing decision involving her daughter without her knowledge or consent.

In this situation, the OP was balancing several complicated emotions at once.

She likely appreciated that her MIL helped with childcare and wanted a relationship with Lena, but that support did not automatically give MIL the authority to act like a parent.

A grandparent can be deeply loving while still needing to respect the role of the child’s actual parents.

The sudden Hawaii trip represented a major crossing of that line because it involved travel, separation, and a decision made without agreement from both parents.

A different perspective is that some grandparents may mistake closeness with permission.

After spending many hours caring for a grandchild, they can begin to feel they are an equal decision-maker rather than a trusted helper.

This can happen especially when young parents are still building confidence and independence.

However, the emotional comfort of the grandparent cannot outweigh the need for parental consent.

The issue is not whether Lena would enjoy Hawaii; the issue is whether her parents were given the respect and information needed to make that choice.

This perspective highlights why the OP’s reaction was understandable.

Saying no to the trip was not necessarily about punishing MIL or preventing Lena from experiencing new things.

It was about recognizing that major parenting decisions require agreement from the people legally and emotionally responsible for the child.

A child’s relationship with extended family becomes healthier when grandparents understand that love does not replace parental authority.

The update makes the situation more serious because the concern is no longer only about a disagreement over boundaries.

If a child has actually been taken on a trip without one parent’s knowledge or consent, the focus must shift toward confirming the child’s safety and understanding the legal situation.

The OP’s hesitation about involving outside help is emotionally understandable, but protecting a child’s wellbeing has to come before avoiding family conflict.

Ultimately, strong family relationships are built when everyone understands their role.

Grandparents can create beautiful memories with grandchildren, but the foundation must always be trust, respect, and permission.

A loving family is not one where boundaries disappear; it is one where everyone feels safe enough to honor them.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters agreed OP was right to refuse the trip and prioritize parental boundaries

Icy-Copy1534 − Nope and I’d remind her taking a child over state lines can

be considered kidnapping. If nothing else it should make her think twice.

Best suggestion - find paid help. Free childcare is NEVER really free.

Icy-Doctor23 − Find alternate childcare. You and DH need to be united

front you’re absolutely NTA

0fluffythe0ferocious − NTA That is insane. The kid is three and they want to

take her to Hawaii? And they didn't even ask you? No, and your husband is

being an i__ot. You are the parents. Not the grandparents.

Jakb4321 − Yikes! What’s wrong with your husband for not shutting that

nonsense down immediately! That would be a huge NOPE for most parents!

laughter_corgis − NTA. Your husband needs to grow a spine! No you will

not be taking our child on a trip without checking with us first. Don't allow

her to babysit or do child care anymore. You can't trust her. What does she

do when you're not there?

These Redditors criticized the husband for avoiding conflict and failing to support OP’s decisions

West-Molasses4571 − You never wanna see your kid again? Because that’s

how you never see your kid again. Your husband is pathetic trying to

smooth this over. He can have the kid’s ticket and when he comes back he

can take his stuff off the front porch and move back in with hims mommy

because the cord was never cut.

AccomplishedLeave506 − You are married to a spineless i__ot.

IDONTKNOWPICKLES − Your husband should never pick his parents over

your word, that's a spineless act and he needs to grow the f__k up.

PomegranateReal3620 − Your MIL needs to explore the concept of Not

Yours. When a child is Not Yours, you do not get to dictate where the child

goes, when they are ready to go, how long they go for, and above all, who

they go with. She is not permitted to make any parenting decisions

regarding Your Baby, because your child is Not Hers.

Her Baby is the AH who wants you to give in because he doesn't want to

deal with her temper tantrum. He wants you to bend so she'll shut up. Do

not acquiesce to her emotional blackmail. You give in now, and you'll

become your child's third parent. This is Your Baby, not hers.

Go mama bear and defend your right to make decisions regarding Your

Baby. In the meantime, encourage Her Baby to stop being a baby, grow up,

and control his mom.

These commenters pointed out that a three-year-old is too young to benefit from such a major trip and warned about future boundary issues

Crafty_Special_7052 − NTA also experience what? Your daughter is 3 and I

doubt she’ll even remember her experience in Hawaii.

AtmosphereOk7872 − NTA. It starts small, you probably didn't notice the

first dozen times she put her wants over anyone else's needs. Sit down with

hubs and a pad of paper. Has she called one of of you when the other says

No before this? Has she given your kid something they shouldn't have

either behind your backs or in front of you?

Kept child awake when they should have had a nap or woken up child bc

"grammy's here! Where's my baby? " Check the JustNoMIL sub for other

examples. A murky picture of a thousand paper cuts may or may not

emerge from the fog.

Agoraphobe961 − NTA. She’s three, it’s not like she’ll have very good if any

memories of the trip. Stand your ground now and deal with minor stakes

drama or she’s going to keep pulling this crap.

Virtual-Swan-1253 − Couple things going on here. 1). IMO, you erred by

immediately shutting down the idea of the trip by not first discussing

things with your husband and presenting a united front to MIL. 2). But you

said no, your MIL called your husband and now he wants to override your

decision. Also wrong. 3).

Nowhere in your post do you share how your husband expects to establish

boundaries that his mother will accept and acknowledge 4). Your post

makes no mention of what your husband believes is in the best interests of

your daughter, only what is convenient for him -avoiding “drama” with his

mother. Does your husband really think your daughter can handle this kind of trip?

You are NTA, but you need to be more concerned about setting precedents

as well as figuring out how you and your husband will responsibly handle

these situations in the future.

What started as a disagreement over a vacation quickly became a much bigger issue about parental boundaries and trust.

Many readers would understand why the OP refused to let her MIL take her young daughter away without permission, while others may question the role the husband played behind the scenes.

A grandparent can love a child deeply, but major decisions still belong to the parents.

Was the OP right to stand her ground, or did this situation reveal a deeper problem in the marriage? What would you do if someone took your child without your consent? Share your thoughts below.
