He Was Embarrassed by His Girlfriend Wearing Pajamas in Public, Then Realized There Might Be More to It

For most couples, deciding what to wear for a day out isn’t a major relationship issue.

But for one 32-year-old man, his girlfriend’s habit of wearing pajamas everywhere had started making him uncomfortable.

The couple had been together for about a year, and until recently, they had never had a serious argument. They had planned a simple weekend outing, starting with a visit to a museum and ending with lunch.

He got dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and was ready to leave.

His girlfriend wasn’t.

She was still wearing her pajamas.

When he asked whether she was ready, she simply said yes, slipped on a pair of slides, and walked out the door.

To him, she looked like she had just gotten out of bed. Her shirt was stained, her hair was messy, and she hadn’t changed into clothes that looked appropriate for going out.

He didn’t say anything.

They went to the museum anyway.

But throughout the outing, he couldn’t shake the feeling of embarrassment.

My SO (32F) Wears Pajamas Everywhere and it Makes Me (32M) Feel Embarrassed. How Do I Tell Her with Being a Jerk?

My SO (32F) and I (32M) woke up this weekend

with plans to go to the museum in the morning followed by lunch in the afternoon. After I get dressed and ready to go, she's still in her pajamas.

I asked if she was ready to go and she said yeah and slipped some slides on.

She basically looked like she just rolled out of bed in a stained shirt and bedhead. I wasn't even dressed nice or anything, just jeans and tshirt. We walked around...

embarrassed. We stopped at home for a bit before lunch, but before heading back out I asked if she was ready, she said yeah.

I said "You're going out to eat in your pajamas?". She said, "Yeah I don't feel like putting clothes on. I said, "But your clothes are washed and cleaned, I...

(she had asked me to wash the clothes she brought over to my place the previous day, and I did). She said, “I just don’t feel like it.” And I...

We have been together 1 year and have never been in an argument, but in that moment I really did not want to go out to eat with her dressed...

She has done this multiple times throughout our time dating and has been doing it more and more often.

How do I tell her that her wearing pajamas to nice things makes me feel embarrassed?

Like it could literally be jeans and a tshirt as well, just not the same clothes she slept in.

I honestly feel like an asshole for feeling this way, but if she was dressed in normal clothes, I would for sure not be able to leave the house in...

It Wasn’t About Dressing Fancy

The man wasn’t expecting his girlfriend to dress up.

He wasn’t wearing anything particularly nice himself. He wasn’t asking her to put on a dress, makeup, or heels.

Jeans and a T-shirt would have been completely fine.

What bothered him was that she was wearing the exact clothes she had slept in.

They eventually returned home before lunch.

Once again, he asked whether she was ready to go.

She said yes.

That’s when he finally asked, “You’re going out to eat in your pajamas?”

Her response was simple.

She just didn’t feel like changing.

He pointed out that her regular clothes were clean because he had actually washed them for her the previous day after she had asked him to.

Still, she didn’t want to change.

He didn’t push the issue.

He simply said, “Oh, okay.”

And they went to lunch with her still wearing pajamas.

But internally, he was frustrated.

This wasn’t the first time it had happened either.

According to him, she had increasingly started wearing pajamas outside the house during their relationship.

At first, he had ignored it.

Now it was becoming frequent enough that he was wondering whether he needed to say something.

The Part He Was Missing

His biggest concern was how to bring it up without sounding cruel.

He didn’t want to tell his girlfriend that she was embarrassing him.

He also didn’t want to make her feel judged or controlled.

But there was something else he hadn’t initially considered.

Several commenters immediately wondered whether the change in behavior could be connected to depression.

And that possibility became more significant when the girlfriend revealed that she was taking antidepressants.

That doesn’t automatically mean her clothing choices were caused by depression. There wasn’t enough information to know that for certain.

But a noticeable change in motivation and everyday self-care can sometimes be worth checking in about.

The important thing, therefore, wasn’t simply whether she was wearing pajamas.

It was whether she was okay.

Concern Before Criticism

One of the strongest suggestions from the comments was to change the conversation entirely.

Instead of beginning with, “I’m embarrassed when you wear pajamas,” he could begin by asking how she has been feeling.

Something as simple as, “I’ve noticed you’ve been having a harder time getting dressed and going out lately. Are you doing okay?” would open a very different conversation.

That approach matters because criticism can easily make someone defensive, especially if there is already an underlying struggle.

Psychologist and author Nedra Glover Tawwab has written extensively about communicating needs and boundaries without trying to control another person’s behavior. The distinction is important here: he cannot dictate what his girlfriend wears, but he can communicate what he is comfortable participating in.

In this situation, the healthiest approach would be to express both things honestly.

He can care about her wellbeing while also acknowledging that he doesn’t enjoy going to restaurants or other outings with someone dressed in sleepwear.

Those aren’t necessarily contradictory feelings.

A Boundary Is Different From a Rule

There is a big difference between saying, “You aren’t allowed to wear pajamas outside,” and saying, “If you’re going somewhere with me, I’d prefer that you change into regular clothes.”

The first attempts to control her.

The second communicates his own boundary.

He could even keep the wording much softer.

“Would you mind putting on some day clothes? I feel more like we’re going out together when we’re both dressed for the day.”

That says what he wants without attacking her appearance.

If she chooses to keep wearing pajamas, he then has to decide what he is personally comfortable doing.

He can stay home.

He can go without her.

Or, depending on the situation, he can accept that this is simply something they disagree about.

What he shouldn’t do is silently spend the entire day feeling embarrassed and resentful while pretending everything is fine.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Several commenters immediately suspected depression and encouraged him to check on his girlfriend instead of criticizing her clothing.

StillStanding613 − Tell her that you're worried about her because you've noticed she's had more days when she doesn't feel like getting dressed, and you're concerned about her. Is she...

Does she need more support? If she needs support for depression or similar, help her get it. If she's just being lazy, she'll get the memo that you don't consider...

Edit: Holy moly, awards! Thank you so much, whoever gave me those!

Throwaway127721 − A lot of comments have asked, yes she is on antidepressants. I have never dealt with anything like this in a relationship, but I do genuinely care about...

I will sit down with her and ask her if she is ok, instead of telling her that it embarrasses me as I do not want to her to think...

karmicreditplan − Yes maybe she’s depressed and you should address that. But you can and also should say babe I’m not going anywhere with you if you don’t get dressed...

ItsaTheMal − Is she experiencing depression?

Others agreed that he was allowed to have a preference about what his partner wears in public.

bea_dizzle − She might be depressed.

tardytimetraveler − You just say “any chance you could put on some day clothes?

” And if she asks why you can say “ Makes me feel like we’re ready for the day together” or “makes me feel like you value my company when...

or “those pajamas are stained and look kind of sloppy” You have to start by expressing your desire.

Don’t start by expressing your embarrassment.

Long_Cartoonist_1283 − this genuinely sounds like depression and you should probably check in on her

elgrn1 − Your passivity and conflict avoidance means you are part of the problem.

You don't have to be rude but to spend a whole day resenting your partner and feeling embarrassed because you haven't wanted to either show some compassion

for whatever she is struggling with and ask if she is okay, or tell her you aren't willing to spend a day with her wearing pyjamas in public, is unacceptable.

This has been going on for months, where is your empathy and emotional maturity? Where is the consideration for her wellbeing?

Strangers have immediately suggested she might be depressed, how have you not noticed, considered it, or even asked her about how she is? ? As for speaking to her, you're...

"I don't feel comfortable with you wearing pyjamas in public so if that's what you choose to wear i won't be joining you". You don't make rules for others or...

wizardnamehere − Honestly? Just tell her you don’t want to go out with someone in their PJs and ask her to put some outside clothing on. You don’t need to...

hdwr31 − That’s tough. I think I would say, it looks like you would rather stay home.

In the End

The clothing may not actually be the heart of the issue.

If she simply prefers pajamas and doesn’t see anything wrong with wearing them outside, then the couple has a straightforward difference in preferences to work through.

But if the change is connected to her mental wellbeing, criticizing her appearance could make things worse.

The best first step is probably the simplest one: talk to her.

Ask how she’s doing.

Tell her what you’ve noticed.

Then, once you’ve made sure she’s okay, explain honestly that you’d prefer she change into regular clothes when you’re going somewhere together.

He doesn’t need to choose between compassion and honesty.

A healthy relationship should have room for both.

Would you focus on the possible underlying issue first, or would you simply tell your partner that pajamas are a dealbreaker for going out?
