A Stranger Told a Grieving Mother to Smile at a Spa, Then Learned Why She Was Crying

There are moments when a person’s sadness should be left completely alone.

For one grieving mother, that should have been especially obvious.

Just five days earlier, she had buried her baby daughter.

She was still in the middle of that unbearable grief when a close friend decided to do something kind. Knowing there was nothing she could say that would make the loss disappear, the friend bought her a spa treatment and took her out for a little time away from everything.

It wasn’t meant to fix anything.

It was simply a gesture of love.

While they waited at the spa reception desk, the friend started reading through the available treatments and asked which one she would prefer.

The grieving woman barely responded.

She eventually mumbled an answer, clearly overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted.

Then a stranger behind them decided to comment.

And what happened next left the entire reception area uncomfortable.

Not the actual photo

'Random women said my friend didn't look happy. Friend told her she her daughter funeral?'

My friend baby girl was stillborn. I decided to take her a spa treatment to help lift her spirit.

While we we're waiting for the receptionist dealing with another customer I started reading out the treatments they do and asked which one would my friend like?

She was almost non responsive but mumbled which one she preferred.

I guess the women behind us thought she was being ungrateful because she cut in and said what are you looking sad for?

If someone was paying for me I'd be happy! Smile!

Before I could say anything my friend, said I am sad because I lost my baby daughter and we just buried her 5 days ago. She ended up crying in...

The women mouth kinda opened and closed trying to figure out what to say but realizing that anything said at that point wouldn't matter because she had messed up and...

So in the end she just sat down and pretended to look for something in her bag while everyone else in the reception area glared at her. She eventually left....

“Why Are You Looking So Sad?”

The friend was still going through the treatment options when the woman behind them apparently became irritated by the grieving mother’s lack of enthusiasm.

She interrupted and essentially told her to cheer up.

Her reasoning seemed simple enough in her mind.

If someone was paying for you to have a spa treatment, why wouldn’t you be happy?

She told the woman to smile.

The grieving mother could have ignored her.

Her friend could have stepped in.

Instead, the mother quietly explained why she wasn’t smiling.

She had just lost her baby daughter.

They had buried her five days earlier.

That was it.

The stranger immediately realized what she had done.

Her mouth reportedly opened and closed several times as she tried to find something to say. But there wasn’t really a good response available anymore.

Any attempt to explain herself would probably only make the situation worse.

So she sat down, awkwardly looked through her bag, and avoided everyone else’s eyes.

The people around them had clearly heard what happened, and several were now staring at her with obvious disapproval.

Eventually, she left.

The grieving mother, meanwhile, broke down crying and was comforted by her friend.

It was an awful moment.

But at least she hadn’t been alone.

Sometimes Grief Doesn’t Look the Way People Expect

What makes the stranger’s comment particularly painful is that grief doesn’t come with a schedule.

Someone can be sitting quietly, looking exhausted, staring into space, or simply not smiling, and there may be a very good reason.

People don’t owe strangers an explanation for their emotions.

The grieving woman wasn’t disrupting the spa.

She wasn’t yelling at anyone.

She wasn’t demanding special treatment.

She was simply having a difficult moment after experiencing something devastating.

Her friend had actually done something thoughtful by giving her an opportunity to be cared for without expecting her to suddenly become cheerful.

And that distinction matters.

A spa treatment might provide a few hours of comfort.

It cannot erase the reason someone needs comfort in the first place.

Grief Is Not Something People Can Simply Turn Off

Grief counselor David Kessler has written extensively about the individual nature of grief and the fact that there is no single correct way to experience or express it. His work emphasizes that grief can involve many different emotions and that people shouldn’t be expected to move through loss according to someone else’s timetable.

David Kessler’s official grief resources

That is especially relevant here.

The mother wasn’t failing to appreciate the spa treatment.

She wasn’t being rude to her friend.

She was grieving.

There is also a strange assumption behind telling someone to smile. It suggests that visible sadness is somehow inappropriate simply because other people have to witness it.

But sadness isn’t contagious.

And happiness isn’t a requirement for being in public.

The friend understood that. She didn’t demand that the mother enjoy herself. She simply stayed beside her.

That may have been the most important thing she could do.

The Stranger Didn’t Know, But She Still Crossed a Line

It is worth acknowledging that the stranger didn’t know what had happened.

She couldn’t have known that the woman had recently buried her child.

That doesn’t make her comment malicious by itself.

People sometimes speak without knowing what another person is going through.

But not knowing doesn’t make the comment appropriate.

There was no reason to demand a smile from a stranger in the first place.

The kinder response would have been to mind her own business.

And once she learned the truth, the best thing she could have done would simply have been to apologize.

A quiet, sincere “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know” would not have erased the hurt, but it would at least have shown basic compassion.

Instead, she appeared to realize immediately that she had said something deeply insensitive and chose to leave.

Here's what people had to say to OP:

Many commenters were horrified that a stranger felt entitled to criticize someone for not looking happy enough.

Sometimes the Kindest Thing Is to Leave Someone Alone

The stranger’s comment probably lasted less than a minute.

For the grieving mother, though, it came at an already painful time.

Fortunately, she had someone beside her.

Her friend didn’t try to force her to cheer up. She didn’t tell her to enjoy the treatment. She simply held her when she started crying.

That is what genuine support can look like.

Not fixing the grief.

Not finding the perfect words.

Just staying.

The spa treatment might have been intended to lift her spirits, but perhaps it didn’t need to.

Maybe she only needed a friend willing to sit beside her while she hurt.

And perhaps that is the bigger lesson from this uncomfortable encounter.

Before telling someone to smile, remember that you have absolutely no idea what happened five minutes before you saw them.

Sometimes a person isn’t unhappy because they are ungrateful.

Sometimes they are surviving something you can’t see.

And in those moments, the kindest thing you can do is simply let them be.
