Wife Removes Wedding Ring After Husband Chooses His Brother Over Her Safety

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Sharing a home with extended family can be challenging, especially when boundaries start becoming unclear.

What seems like harmless comments or awkward moments to one person can feel completely different when someone repeatedly crosses personal limits.

OP never expected helping her husband’s brother during a difficult time would create tension in her marriage.

After months of uncomfortable interactions, she finally opened up about what had been happening inside their home.

Instead of addressing her concerns, her husband defended his brother and made OP feel like speaking up was the real problem.

Now, OP is questioning whether she reacted too strongly or whether her husband failed to protect their relationship.

Scroll down to see what Reddit had to say.

Newlywed woman becomes uncomfortable when her brother-in-law moves in, crosses boundaries, and her husband refuses to listen

Wife Removes Wedding Ring After Husband Chooses His Brother Over Her Safety
not the actual photo

'AITA for telling my husband “then I guess this relationship won’t work” and taking off my wedding ring after he told me not to talk about his family?'

My husband (32M) and I (30F) have been married for 8 months. We’ve been

together almost 5 years, and for the most part things were good—until his

brother (36M) came into the picture.

Some context: my brother-in-law had been living abroad for over two

decades. He got a decent job overseas when he was young, stayed there

forever, and just never came back to the usa until recently. He even

attended our wedding by one of those telepresence robots because he

“didn’t want to fly back for a short trip.” So I never actually met him in

person until after we were married.

Six months ago, BIL got fired from his job and came back here with no

place to live, so my husband told him he could stay with us “for a little

while.” That “little while” has turned into six months of him living under our

roof with no serious plan to leave.

Here’s the issue: his behavior toward me makes me extremely

uncomfortable. He makes these weird little comments when we’re alone—

like “you must drive my brother crazy looking like that” or “if I were married

to you, I’d never leave the house.” or as he told me last week “(my

husband’s name) is a fool for not showing you off. That’s like hiding a

diamond Ferrari in a garage.” Sometimes he tries to make it sound like a

joke, but it doesn’t land as funny at all. He has also “accidentally” walked

into the guest bathroom while I was in there twice (and just shrugged it

off). He’s overly familiar in texts too—sending winky faces, commenting on

selfies I post (in private messages/dm’s which also throws me off), and just… acting creepy.

I’ve been trying to handle this delicately because I didn’t want to start a

war between my husband and his brother, especially since he just lost his

job. I thought maybe it was just me overthinking at first. But after months

of this, I finally sat my husband down and explained what was going on

Instead of listening or even asking me for examples, he cut me off and told

me that if I “wanted this marriage to work, I cannot talk badly about his

family.” I just sat there shocked. I asked if he was seriously telling me I

couldn’t even raise concerns about someone living in our house, and he

doubled down. He said, “That’s my brother. If you love me, you won’t make me choose.”

So then I just.. took off my wedding ring right there, set it on the table, and

said, “Then I guess this relationship won’t work.” After that I walked away,

grabbed some stuff, and started sleeping in the guest room. I’ve been cold

and distant since because I honestly don’t know how to even look at him the same way.

I’m quietly making arrangements to go stay with a close friend for a while,

because I can’t keep living like this. But I haven’t told my husband yet—I

just need space to think.

Of course, word has gotten around his side of the family. His mom and one

of his brothers (not the creepy one) have been calling and texting, saying

I’m “overreacting,” “dramatic,” and “trying to break up a family.” My MIL

actually told me I’m “jealous” of the bond between brothers. The only

people who seem to understand me at all are my two SILs, who both said

BIL has always been “off” but no one in the family wants to admit it.

Now I’m sitting here wondering if I am being dramatic. Like maybe it’s not

that bad and I blew up too fast? But at the same time, my husband telling

me I can’t even talk about his brother feels like a slap in the face. I’ve been

nothing but supportive of him and his family for years. I need like

thousandths other opinions right now, especially people who don’t know

us? Am I just overreacting or what?

When someone says they feel uncomfortable in their own home, the most painful part is often not the original behavior, but feeling like the person who should protect them refuses to listen.

OP’s situation was not only about her brother-in-law’s inappropriate comments; it was about discovering whether her marriage was a place where her concerns would be taken seriously.

The emotional conflict in this story comes from OP being placed in an impossible position.

She tried to be patient because she understood that her husband’s brother was struggling after losing his job and returning from overseas.

Instead of immediately demanding that he leave, she gave the situation time and attempted to avoid creating family conflict.

However, repeated uncomfortable interactions slowly changed the situation from a temporary inconvenience into a question of safety and trust.

The most damaging moment was not just BIL’s behavior, but her husband’s response. Rather than investigating her concerns, he framed them as an attack on his family.

A different perspective is that OP’s reaction may not have been about one conversation at all.

People often reach a breaking point after repeatedly minimizing their own discomfort to preserve harmony.

In many families, loyalty can become confused with silence, where questioning a relative is treated as betrayal.

OP’s husband may believe he is defending his brother, but by refusing to hear his wife’s concerns, he unintentionally communicated that protecting family image mattered more than protecting the person sharing his home.

This insight helps explain why OP felt so hurt by her husband’s reaction. She was not asking him to abandon his brother without discussion.

She was asking him to acknowledge that someone living in their home was making her uncomfortable and to take her feelings seriously.

A healthy partnership does not require choosing between a spouse and family member immediately, but it does require creating a safe environment where concerns can be discussed without punishment.

The larger issue is that boundaries inside a shared home belong to the people who live there.

Compassion for a struggling family member is important, but compassion should not require another person to tolerate behavior that makes them feel unsafe or disrespected.

Before deciding the future of the marriage, OP may benefit from focusing less on proving whether BIL’s intentions were harmless and more on whether her husband is willing to recognize her experience and rebuild trust.

A marriage is not tested only during easy years.

It is tested when one person says, “Something is wrong,” and the other person has a choice: listen, or look away. In situations like this, feeling heard is often the first boundary that needs to be restored.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters urged OP to leave and prioritize safety after feeling unsupported by her husband

TheWacoFogey − NTA. Your husband is. You don't have someone move into

your house for six of the first eight months of your marriage and allow

them to sexualize your wife for their own amusement. He's married to his family, not to you.

You need to get out of there and see if that forces a recalculation on his

part, but based on the reaction of the family, I doubt he's capable of it. ETA: Thanks for the awards!

athenawise − Absolutely not. He's making you uncomfortable, he is wrong

for that. He should not be making such vile comments. My advice would be

to pack your stuff and temporarily leave to stay at your friend's house. And

block all of them. Including your husband. Make sure he knows you mean business.

Ignore him, avoid him, give him the cold shoulder, don't talk to him until he

realizes what's happening. Therapy would also work if you want that, but

talking to him would help if he understands what's happening.

PrizeBlackberry3003 − NTA. Please leave as soon as you can. If the two

other women in the family aside from MIL agree that there’s something

“off” with this BIL you need to listen to your gut. It is that bad and you

didn’t blow up too fast. If you can’t feel safe in your own home, it’s time to leave.

Especially if your husband isn’t going anything to make you feel safe and

comfortable. Maybe there’s a reason dude was “abroad” for all those years,

never came home, and now all of a sudden lost his job and is back? Seems weird to me. 🤔

iknowsomethings2 − NTA. Your husband is just fine with his brother

s__ually harassing you IN YOUR OWN HOME! Talk to a lawyer before you

leave that house S it’s martial property (I assume? ). Your husband has

shown you he won’t prioritise or protect you! Now you can find someone

who does. Send this post to the SIL’s. Maybe they can show their husbands.

However, even if the brother moves out now, your husband and his family

has shown their priorities, I don’t think there’s any fixing this now. Edited to

add: be safe in that house with the brother around still. Get cameras and an

internal and external lock on your room.

This group warned that the BIL’s behavior could escalate and encouraged OP to trust her instincts

Lonely_Howl_ − Be careful, and try not to be alone with the brother. I don’t

trust him not to try something, especially now that y’all are potentially

separating. Your husband has already proven he won’t believe or defend

you, and that has likely given the brother the mental “go ahead” in being

more aggressive towards you.

It’s very telling that all your sisters-in-laws acknowledge that the brothers

always been “off”. They’ve probably experienced what you’re experiencing

now, maybe worse. You are not safe in that house.

AltruisticCableCar − I think it's obvious that this particular brother has

always been the topic of concern for anyone trying to join the family. I. e.

any ex girlfriends there has ever been, to any of the sons. It's likely also a

topic that has been brought up by teachers and other relatives. Otherwise

your husband wouldn't immediately shut it down. He's heard it all before.

And it has been decided within the family that your brother can do/say

whatever he wants and it should never be addressed. I'll bet there are

plenty of cousins and other relatives that are no longer welcome in the

family, same with family friends and the like.

Anyone who has ever voiced concerns about the brother has absolutely

been told to either accept it or been shown the door. Your SILs are further

proof of this. So basically, make a choice. Either you shut up and accept the

way the family has always chosen to - and will always continue to choose to

- handle the brother being "off". Or you leave.

I am also willing to bet we're not only talking words, by the way. I can

almost guarantee that this brother has either full on raped someone or

he's at the very least attempted it. All of course which has been swept

under the rug by the family. You're allowed to make either choice you

want, but I'd consider the future if I were you.

Imagine bringing children into a family where one brother may be a full on

s__ual predator (or a budding one, at the very least) and no one gives a

f__k. Honestly, get out and save yourself.

I can promise you that if the brother ever tries anything with you (a high

probability) no one will want to hear about it and any attempts of taking

things to the police will be waived off too and they WILL make you look like

you're either completely lying or you seduced the brother and is now feeling guilty.

Mtl_kat29 − For your own safety get out of that house. There is no telling

how far your BIL will take things and god forbid anything happen to you

they will gaslight you to no end into thinking your at fault.

RubixcubeIAm − NOT THE F__KING A__HOLE. So, when he decides he's

comfy enough to start touching you, cornering you, possibly assaulting you,

they will blame you. Your husband will try to blame you. He's blaming you

now. If you want to try to make it work, move out, get therapy, see if he

wants to try. You are NOT in a safe space.

That should be your husband's number one priority. Not his brother's

f__king feelings. What did he get fired for? I would be interested to know. I

dont think I, personally, could get past the fact my husband is allowing his

brother to act that way. I finally told MY husband that his brother used to

hit on me. He did NOT take it well.

HE GOT UPSET AT THE PERPETRATOR. Not tge victim. Hugs and hope.

Trust your gut. Do NOT back down.

These Redditors suggested confronting the family with evidence and clearly stating boundaries

Nozza-D − I would have forwarded the text messages to MIL and other BIL

and ask them if these are perfectly acceptable for them. I don’t even know

why you’re second guessing yourself, he’s clearly sleazy, and it seems your

SILs are on the same page. NTA.

CatchMeIfYouCan09 − Full stop. To the hubs AFTER you leave. ... "I'm not

talking bad about a family member, I'm raising concerns about

questionable behaviors. Secondly asking to feel respected and heard is the

bare minimum expectation for this marriage and this home; feeling safe

and enforcing my boundaries is the bare minimum of YOUR job as a

husband, that you are failing miserably at.

Third, I wasnt making you chose, I wanted to feel heard and was asking you

to have a discussion with BIL to knock it off, it's creepy at the minimum BUT

now i am. I won't subject myself to what amounts to sexist male

objectification and it's disgusting that you're being so dismissive.

You could've easily talked to him and reinforced proper behavior around

YOUR WIFE and the problem would've been solved; NOW you are. You

could've easily been supportive by having him stay worth other family

while still providing him stability and support in other ways. Instead YOU

are forcing YOU to choose between the two.

YOU are being stubborn and putting yourself into this situation that never

would've existed had you simply listened and reinforced my boundaries to

begin with. (If you both own the home equally, have him trespassed) I'll be

home after he's off the property to pack.

" And to his family "You don't get to dismiss my boundaries; I don't care

that your self respect is so low you simply tolerate disgusting behavior. I

won't be subjected to it, nor will I be subjecting myself to YOUR abusive additude" Block em

This situation seems to go far beyond a simple disagreement with a relative.

OP tried to address repeated uncomfortable behavior from someone living in their home, but the bigger turning point was her husband refusing to even hear her concerns.

A marriage usually requires both partners to feel protected and taken seriously, especially when it comes to boundaries inside their own home.

Some may argue OP should have pushed for a longer conversation before walking away, while others will say her husband’s response showed where his priorities were.

Do you think OP reacted too quickly, or was removing herself the only way to feel safe and respected? Share your thoughts below!
