Woman Stops Speaking to SIL After She Blames Her for a Vacation She Didn’t Fund

in Social Issues

Family conflicts can become complicated when money, expectations, and old relationships are involved.

Sometimes the biggest arguments are not about the original problem, but about who feels entitled to be supported and who gets blamed when things go wrong.

The original poster (OP) had always had a good relationship with her sister-in-law until a disagreement over a family vacation changed everything.

After an unexpected expense made it impossible for OP to contribute as much as planned, her SIL publicly blamed her and turned the situation into a much bigger issue.

OP decided to step back completely, but when the family reunited months later, her silence created another round of tension.

Read on to see whether OP went too far by cutting her SIL off.

'AITA for giving my SIL the silent treatment during their visit?'

Let me start by saying that before my husband and I married, the

relationship between his sister and I was always pretty good. After we got

married, her behavior started to change. She started being rude and giving

little snide remarks here and there and even my MIL called her on it a few

times. After this particular altercation, I'd had enough. Get comfy.

My SIL had come out with her family from Western Canada and would be

staying for a week during the summer school break. The entire time she

was here, I didn't even acknowledge her existence while we all spent time

together. Here's the backstory on that: my husband was set to visit her

earlier in the year and would drive out there with his mom and our kids. I'd

just started a new job and wouldn't be able to take that vacation time, but

said I would help with some of the cost of getting there and I'd send money

while they visited (I was making more than my husband at the time). The

planning was going well and I'd been putting aside small amounts here and

there, but then a couple of things happened almost all at once: our dog

ended up getting Lyme disease (my bank account still screams in pain when

I mention it) and we had to get an entirely new set of tires for the car as

the inner walls were starting to crack on the old ones. Between the

treatment for the dog and the tires, the savings I'd had for the trip was

pretty much wiped out. I explained this to my husband and he was angry

that I was no longer able to provide the money I'd promised. Yes, I know,

this makes him sound like a complete d__che and I called him out on it as

did his mother (I LOVE my MIL, she's one of the good ones) because we

both told him he should have been saving as well. He did apologize for his

comments afterwards and there was some groveling involved. My SIL,

however, is another matter entirely. She lost her mind and took to

Facebook to post about it.

My SIL started by saying I'd "ruined the trip and that it was my fault her kids

wouldn't be able to see their cousins." Did I clap back? You better believe it.

I pointed out I had been the only one saving for the trip despite not even

going and the emergency expenses that had come up; that it wasn't my

fault her brother, aka my husband, decided to be an i__ot and not set aside

anything. Was it my responsibility to pay for absolutely everything? Her

reply was "Who else should pay for the trip? You're being an absolute

b\*tch and ruining this vacation that had been planned months ago." My

response was "Your brother could have helped out. Since I'm such a

horrible person, does this mean I'm off the Christmas card list?

Permanently?" This, apparently, was the wrong thing to say (yes, I could

have handled it better, but the words were out before my brain could stop

my fingers from typing them). She said that it was my job as a parent to

"pay for this trip and I was a horrible mother for denying her kids time with

their cousins". And then she blocked me.

Her mother was horrified by what had gone down and was angry at her for

putting this on Facebook and expecting everything to be at my expense,

angry at my husband for instigating the whole thing by not taking any

responsibility for saving up and putting it all on me and was firmly on my

side. She took what little savings she had (she's on a very tight fixed

income) and said she would pay for the gas to get out there and told my SIL

she didn't want to hear a single thing said about me when they arrived. So,

they went and it was a quiet two weeks for me.

And then they arrive in the summer. I hadn't said anything to or about my

SIL since she blocked me. I went complete no contact. I didn't even talk to

my husband about her and when he would mention her, I would tell him to

stop because I wasn't interested in hearing about her. During their visit, we

would all get together and I pretended she wasn't there. Did I walk away

while she would be talking to everyone? Yes. I couldn't muster the fakeness

to pretend like I cared she took up space. After they left for home, my

husband said she'd asked why I was completely ignoring her since it made

her feel uncomfortable, especially after she'd apologized. I explained I'd

never seen or heard this apology and he said it was on Facebook. I then

pointed out she'd blocked me and would have known I wouldn't have been

able to see it and that meant it wasn't for me or she'd would have made

sure I got it. It was so everyone else would think she was being the bigger

and better person. She still hasn't unblocked me or tried to reach out

despite him mentioning it to her.. AITA in this situation for completely stonewalling her?

Sometimes the hardest family conflicts are not caused by one cruel comment, but by the moment someone realizes they were never truly being treated like family.

For OP, the issue was not just a canceled vacation or a Facebook argument.

It was the feeling that she had been expected to carry responsibility for everyone else while being blamed when things went wrong.

The emotional core of this situation revolves around fairness, loyalty, and resentment.

OP had been trying to contribute to a family plan even though she was not attending herself, only to have unexpected expenses force her to step back.

Instead of recognizing that emergencies happen, her SIL framed the situation as a personal failure and publicly blamed her.

The hurt likely came from feeling unappreciated after trying to help.

By the time the family visit happened, OP was no longer reacting to one argument; she was protecting herself from someone she felt had already decided she was the villain.

A different perspective is that SIL may have viewed the vacation as a meaningful family connection rather than a financial arrangement.

She may have been disappointed that plans changed and reacted emotionally because she focused on the outcome rather than the circumstances behind it.

However, disappointment does not automatically justify public criticism or placing the entire burden on one person.

OP’s decision to withdraw was less about punishing SIL and more about refusing to pretend everything was normal after feeling disrespected.

This perspective shows why OP’s reaction makes sense, but it also highlights the difference between a boundary and a punishment.

Choosing not to engage with someone after a painful conflict can be a way to create emotional distance and recover.

However, complete silence can also leave unresolved tension if both people eventually want to repair the relationship.

The important detail here is that SIL’s apology was reportedly posted where OP could not see it because she had been blocked.

That creates a situation where the gesture may have been more about appearing apologetic than actually rebuilding trust.

Family relationships often survive disagreements, but they rarely recover through pretending nothing happened.

OP was not responsible for funding the entire trip, and she was not responsible for making SIL feel better about the consequences of poor planning.

At the same time, long-term peace may come from deciding whether she wants permanent distance or simply enough space to feel respected again.

Sometimes protecting a relationship means having a difficult conversation.

Other times, it means accepting that someone’s version of an apology does not repair the damage they caused.

The real question is not whether OP was wrong for feeling hurt, but whether both sides are willing to acknowledge their role in creating that hurt.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters said OP’s husband was the bigger issue for not supporting her

Actual-Dog3651 − NTA. You're husband should have been saving for the

trip as well. It's not you're sole responsibility and then for her to air her

dirty laundry and call you out for her children not being able to see their

cousins is outrageous. Better question, if you couldn't afford the trip why

couldn't she make plans to take her children to see their cousins?

Fragrant-Macaroon874 − Yeh, your husbands an ass. Aside from the

obvious ass move of expecting you to pay for a trip only he was going on,

not saving himself, and being mad that your savings went on joint

emegancies ( its not like you used that money to buy yourself something).

It also seems he doesnt defend you, still had his vile sister in your house

without apologising to you directly, and is still on her side: if he was a good

husband he would have explained why shes an ass and gone LC with her for

her disturbing behaviour. Husband and SIL beling in the bin, you should keep the MIL.

Amazing-Wave4704 − NTA. You have a BIG husband problem.

hello_reddit1234 − NTA but you have a serious husband problem. If my

spouse continued engaging with someone who blatantly disrespected me

on a public forum… Don’t speak to her. Your kids are going to hear

negative things about you if you allow them in her vicinity. Your MIL is

awesome. Instead of spending the money on your AH husband, take her away

This group defended OP’s decision to ignore SIL after her public blame and questionable apology

HereFromFB − I’m laughing at the people saying Y T A or E SH in the

comments. NTA sis! !! She wasn’t worth acknowledging after taking the

situation public and putting the blame on you. 🤷🏽‍♀️

jennypenny78 − NTA - she blocked you on FB, so you blocked her IRL. Totally justified.

ohemgee0309 − NTA Aww poor little SIL is being ignored. Oh well. Not

your problem, OP. You are absolutely correct that her apology was a public

attempt to recover her own image and not a sincerely made apology to you.

Bennie212 − NTA. I love this for you. She blocks you, then apologizes on the

book of faces but didn’t care enough to do it over the phone or at least by

text. You don’t need to give her any of your energy.

These Redditors viewed SIL’s apology as performative and more focused on public image than genuine accountability

Damncat124 − NTA your SIL experienced FA&FO. Her apology was fake af,

you never even saw it.

HoarderofEverything − Apologizing to someone you have blocked on

Facebook for everyone else to see tells me exactly the kind of person your

SIL is. Swear to god, she's probably the type who would post about

someone else having cancer without asking if they could do so, and tell

everyone "Send prayers! I'll keep you posted, ❤️❤️❤️"

This situation seems to be about more than a missed vacation contribution.

The bigger issue is that OP felt blamed for a problem she didn’t create, then became the target of public criticism after already trying to help.

While some people may feel ignoring a family member for an entire visit is harsh, others would argue that distance can be a reasonable response when someone refuses to have a direct conversation and only offers a public apology that the intended person cannot even see.

Do you think OP’s silence was a fair boundary after being attacked, or should she have given her SIL another chance to explain?

How would you handle a family member who apologizes to everyone except you? Share your thoughts below!
