Nanny’s Fake Family Secret Is Exposed After Two Years Caring for Someone Else’s Children

in Social Issues

When someone admits they lied about their past, the hardest part is often deciding whether the truth they finally shared matters more than the years of deception that came before it.

OP believed she had found the perfect nanny for her children.

The woman was caring, dependable, and became deeply connected to their family over several years.

But everything changed when the nanny confessed that the marriage, child, and previous work experience she described were all part of an elaborate story.

Scroll down to find out why OP chose forgiveness at first, but later began questioning whether she had ignored a serious warning sign.

A mother learns her beloved nanny’s past was built on a shocking secret

not the actual photo

'Our nanny of 2.5 years admitted her entire personal life was a lie. I forgave her immediately, but now I'm not sure how to feel?'

I'm looking for some outside perspective because I'm still processing this.

When my younger son was about 6 months old, we were looking for a nanny. I specifically

wanted someone who spoke my language and could cook familiar baby food, so I posted on Nextdoor.

I interviewed several people and ended up hiring one nanny after a one-week trial. She was

incredibly warm, loving, and wonderful with our son. She told us she was married, had a 3-

year-old daughter, and had previously worked for another family for two years. I even called

the reference she gave me, and the mom spoke very highly of her.. Over the next 2.5 years,

she became part of our family.

We celebrated holidays together. I bought gifts for her and for her "daughter." She would tell

me stories about her child, show me photos, and I would ask how she was doing. She said

she had sent her daughter back to her home country so she and her husband could focus on

work here. My kids absolutely adore her.

When my son started preschool, we no longer needed a full-time nanny, but we still invited

her to come on weekends because the kids loved spending time with her.. Yesterday, she

asked if she could come over because she had something important to tell me.. She sat down

and confessed that almost everything she had told us about her personal life was a lie.

She isn't married. She never had a daughter. The reference I called was fake. She had actually

just arrived from another country and had no nanny experience. Someone had told her that

families only hire nannies who already have children, so she invented an entire life to get a job.

The man she had introduced to us as her husband was actually her boyfriend (now fiancé),

whom she met after moving here. They're getting married this month.

She told me she had carried this guilt for over two years. She said our family had become so

important to her that she couldn't continue lying, especially because she wanted to invite us

to her wedding. She said if she simply stopped coming on weekends, we never would have

known, but she didn't want our relationship to be built on a lie anymore.

My immediate reaction surprised even me. I told her that as long as she had loved my

children, cared for them well, and treated our family with kindness, nothing else really

changed. I hugged her, told her I forgave her, and said we'd still attend her wedding and

would love to have her continue helping us on weekends.. But now, a day later, I'm finding

myself processing the shock.

She lied consistently for over two years. It wasn't one lie - it was an entire fabricated life. At

the same time, none of those lies affected how she cared for my children. In fact, she was an

amazing nanny, and if she had never confessed, we probably would have gone the rest of our

lives never knowing.

Part of me admires that she chose to tell the truth when she had absolutely nothing to gain

and quite a bit to lose. Another part of me wonders if I should be more concerned about

someone who was able to maintain such a detailed deception for so long.. I genuinely care

about her, but I'm also wondering if I'm being too trusting.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Would this change your relationship with her?

Would you still trust her around your children, or would the lying itself be a deal-breaker

even though her actions as a caregiver were exemplary?

Trust is not built only through the absence of mistakes; sometimes it is tested by what someone does after making one.

Many people understand the shock of discovering that someone they care about has hidden a major part of their life.

A long-term lie can make us question everything we thought we knew, even when the person’s actions toward us were consistently kind.

In this situation, OP was not simply deciding whether to forgive a false story.

She was trying to reconcile two conflicting realities: the nanny who created an entire fictional background and the caregiver who spent years showing patience, affection, and genuine love toward her children.

The emotional confusion comes from the fact that both things can be true at the same time.

The deception was serious, but the relationship OP experienced with her children appears to have been sincere.

A different perspective is that the nanny’s lie may have come from fear and insecurity rather than malicious intent.

Someone new to a country, trying to find work, and believing she would not be considered without certain qualifications may have felt desperate enough to create a story that opened a door.

That does not make the deception acceptable, especially when children and trust are involved, but it creates a different picture than someone lying for financial exploitation or to hide harmful behavior.

The most revealing part may not be that she lied initially, it is that she eventually chose to confess when staying silent would have been easier.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s immediate forgiveness does not necessarily mean she is ignoring the seriousness of what happened.

Forgiveness and rebuilding trust are two different processes.

OP can appreciate that the nanny loved her children and value the years of care she provided while still taking time to understand why the deception happened and whether there are other things she needs to know.

The important question may not be “Can someone who lied once be trusted again?”

Most people have hidden things out of fear, embarrassment, or insecurity at some point.

A better question is whether the person takes responsibility, shows remorse, and changes their behavior afterward.

The nanny did not get caught; she voluntarily revealed the truth, knowing it might end a relationship that mattered to her.

OP may not need to erase the past or pretend nothing happened.

A balanced approach could mean continuing the relationship while allowing trust to rebuild naturally.

The children’s safety, consistency, and emotional well-being should remain the priority, but so should recognizing genuine accountability when it appears.

Sometimes the strongest relationships are not the ones without difficult moments, they are the ones where people are honest enough to face them.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters focused on the circumstances behind the lie

LeaJadis − She lied about personal things (that frankly are not relevant to a

job interview). Shes not from our country and she probably didn’t know

that legally you can’t ask if she’s married or has kids. I say, tell her that you

can’t imagine how terrifying and desperate she must have felt to lie about such things.

You forgive and forget and get her the nicest wedding present. She didn’t

do anything illegal or harmful. She lied out of fear and to make herself seem stable.

SarcasticAnd − I understand the personal hurt you're feeling because she

has become so important and you care for her. You feel betrayed by a close

friend. But I think it's important to remember she wasn't lying to her friend

and none of what she's done was malicious.

She lied to a potential employer about things that ARE irrelevant to the

actual job (minus the reference) but do make a difference in the image of a

person and likeliness of getting the job. She trusted that she would be

judged unfairly in the job market without creating a fake persona. I don't

think you should hold that against her now.

Would you have hired her if you knew the truth? Probably not. :/ are you

glad you did hire her? Yes, you are. Let the lie go.

MovieLazy6576 − Desperate people do desperate things. I would forgive her.

This group emphasized the fact that she eventually confessed

Fall_bet − I can't imagine being in a new country and trying to look for work

and trying to fit in. she shouldn't have lied but I understand why she did.

and over those two and a half years she gave you no issues and you built a

relationship with her then I think you should forgive her and ask her just to

be honest with you moving forward.

WiseStock8743 − Yes, she lied. She was desperate for a job. She is also

emotionally connected with you and your family, to the point her

conscience wouldn't allow her to continue the lie. She is basically honest

and I'd be more impressed with her basically moral character than if she'd

chosen to continue a harmless lie.

Qweniden − She was desperate and she lied to survive. The fact that she

felt guilty and confessed when she did not need to show that she is a good person.

These commenters compared her situation to struggles many people face when trying to get work

MSinadress − I think she was playing the employment game. It’s difficult

out there. (How do you gain experience without someone taking a chance? Being a good person

Available-Physics-60 − She didn’t think it through at first. Desperately

needed a job. She got herself into a bad situation. It sucks but at your child was well taken care of

Daft_Daffodil − As someone who was also desperate for a job once - I also

lied. Well, I needed 2 references, but I only had one, so I asked a friend to

help with the second. Perhaps she was in a similar boat. She didn't lie out of

malice. She needed a job and then it was no going back. .until very late I guess.

These comments focused on the relationship built over the years

ZookeepergameTiny992 − It took real courage to tell you the cold truth.

Someone who didn't love you wouldn't do that.

Aggravating_Note4931 − She was in survival mode. It shows how much she

cares for you and your family that she came clean because she wants you to

be a part of her real life. Although unsettling she means well.

peace_love_mcl − I would make this water under the bridge and keep her.

She is already, and will continue to be, very loyal to you. She’s a good

person, I wouldn’t throw her back bc she came from an unbelievably

difficult situation where she had to tell some white lies to make it through.

If she were violent or stealing from you, that would be a completely

different story. Being a good parent, I think it’s very reasonable for you to

be thinking it through and processing what to do going forward, but based

on what you’ve told us here, I wouldn’t get rid of her.

OP was faced with a strange mix of betrayal and compassion: someone she trusted built a false identity, yet the person behind that lie was also someone who cared deeply for her children.

The confession changed the story, but it also showed a willingness to finally be honest when walking away would have been easier.

Some people may see the deception as a major red flag, while others believe her actions and accountability matter more.

Do you think OP was right to forgive and continue the relationship, or would the years of lying make trust impossible? Share your thoughts below!
