Woman Stops Hosting Relatives After They Treat Her Apartment Like A Hotel

Some people see staying with family as a chance to reconnect, while others treat it like a free hotel experience. The difference often becomes obvious when gratitude, respect, and basic consideration are missing.

The original poster (OP) shared how some relatives repeatedly expected free accommodation whenever they visited London. At first, OP allowed them to stay because spending time together seemed worth the inconvenience.

However, after multiple visits filled with little appreciation, unpaid expenses, and unexpected demands, OP started questioning whether the arrangement was fair.

When OP’s fiancé finally stepped in and set clear boundaries, the response was much different than the cousin expected. Scroll down to see how Reddit reacted to this family vacation accommodation dispute.

'Freeloading family expect a free vacation'

I live in London and have family, specifically my cousins, who expect free accommodation to visit.

Before my fiancé moved in, I’d cave and stay at his place for a couple of days and let them have my apartment.

We enjoyed being together at his for the whole weekend, so it didn’t feel like a huge inconvenience, but he told me I should be firmer with them.

The last time, it was my cousin and her 15 year old son. The night they arrived I paid for takeout to be delivered for dinner.

No real thank you, and the next day half the leftovers had been eaten.

I ate the other half and got evil looks from my cousin who hissed “I was planning to have that for lunch!”

We went out for dinner on their last night. When the bill came, I pushed it towards my cousin, thinking she might be a good sport and cover it.

Nope! Out came the iPhone calculator to add up everything she and her son had, and that’s exactly what she paid.

I got the rest… plus the entire service charge!

I’d also bought some supplies in advance thinking I could use whatever’s leftover the following week. Nope! They took them all home with them!

Half eaten bags of crisps (chips), bananas that probably bruised in their bags,

half a bottle of milk, open packets of cookies, muffins, pastries, half empty boxes of breakfast cereal.

After my fiancé moved in my cousin messaged us asking to stay again.

As it’s a one bedroom apartment, I said we have neither the space nor fiancé’s place to stay anymore.

She came up with an elaborate plan of sleeping on the sofa and moving all my furniture out the way to fit an airbed for her son in the living...

My fiancé replied with a list of nearby hotels.

My sister came to visit earlier this summer but her Airbnb fell through last minute, so I offered the sofa for the weekend.

She was a delight to have around, bought me breakfast and left some beautiful flowers in a vase and a thank you card when she left.

A few days later, a message landed from my cousin asking if she and her kid could stay given I’d let my sister. My fiancé replied with a list of...

Cousin asked if she could stay on the sofa if it’s just her and she left the kid at home. Guess what fiancé replied with?

You’re a winner if you guessed the same list of hotels. I wish I was as firm as him sometimes!

Helping family can feel like a natural expression of love, especially when someone lives in a city that others dream of visiting. Many people are happy to open their homes occasionally, but generosity becomes exhausting when one person begins treating another person’s kindness as a permanent resource rather than a gift.

In this story, the OP was not upset simply because relatives wanted to visit London. The frustration came from the pattern behind those visits. She had offered her apartment because she wanted to spend time with family, even making sacrifices by staying elsewhere.

However, the experience left her feeling taken for granted: little appreciation, expectations around food and expenses, taking household supplies without asking, and later attempts to negotiate ways around her boundaries.

The contrast with her sister’s visit seems important because it showed OP that hosting itself was not the problem. The problem was feeling that her generosity was being treated as an entitlement.

A different perspective is that some family members may genuinely view staying with relatives as part of family culture, especially when visiting an expensive city. Her cousin may have seen the apartment as a practical solution rather than understanding the effort involved in hosting.

However, the difference between a welcome guest and a burden is often not the length of the stay. It is the attitude. A guest who contributes, expresses gratitude, and respects limits can feel completely different from someone who focuses only on what they can receive.

Relationship experts often emphasize that boundaries are essential because healthy relationships require both connection and respect for individual needs.

Therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab explains that boundaries are not about rejecting people; they clarify what someone is willing and able to offer while protecting their own time, energy, and emotional resources. She notes that people who are used to having unlimited access may react negatively when boundaries are introduced, even when those boundaries are reasonable.

This explains why the cousin’s reaction appears so different from the sister’s visit. OP’s sister accepted a temporary favor and responded with appreciation.

The cousin appears to have focused on finding ways around the “no,” including suggesting different sleeping arrangements after being told the situation no longer worked. That response likely reinforced OP’s feeling that the issue was never just space.

The fiancé’s role is also interesting. Sometimes an outside person can recognize an unhealthy pattern more clearly because they are not carrying years of family expectations. His hotel recommendations were not necessarily a rejection of family; they were a practical reminder that OP’s home is also her private space.

The broader lesson is that hospitality should remain voluntary. A person can love their relatives, enjoy spending time together, and still decide that their home is not a free vacation accommodation. The strongest family relationships are not built on unlimited access. They are built when people appreciate generosity enough to respect its limits.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors praised OP’s fiancé for supporting her boundaries and standing up for their home

NYC-WhWmn-ov50 − Fiance is the absolute BOSS.

DazzlingPotion − Your fiancé is a winner! 🏆

These commenters encouraged OP to say no firmly without overexplaining or feeling guilty

TaylorMade2566 − What are you afraid of if you say no? The whole "you're being selfish", "it's no big deal" or the ever classic "family helps family"?

Tell them that when they stayed at your place, they never expressed any gratitude and even took advantage of your kindness,

so they will need to find another place to stay.

hawken54321 − Don't explain anything. Sorry. Can't do it. repeat as necessary.

Equivalent-Roll-3321 − Boundaries are key. I don’t bother with users and rude people.

Simply reply no. No excuses required. TBH I would probably just leave the messages on read.

These Redditors warned OP not to let another relative use a similar excuse to move in unexpectedly

mismoom − The sister’s stay was impromptu. Just make sure the cousin doesn’t have “her AirBnB unexpectedly fall through” to be allowed to stay again.

TheQuarantinian − I would have included "after the way you behaved the last time you were here, no. "

They can't learn unless they connect the correction with the behavior.

These commenters shared examples of respectful guests who contribute, clean up, and appreciate hospitality

bronwynbloomington − We winter in the SE United States. When we have guests, I send them a list of things I provide.

(Soda pop, coffee, some snacks like potato chips, etc. , milk, cereal, bread, peanut butter, TP of course) Anything else is on them.

They must buy their own soda pop or snacks if they don’t like mine. They must buy their own wine, liquor if they drink.

I usually cook dinner or order out once or twice. Most of the time guests insist on paying for take out.

And when we go out for dinner, I always say separate checks when we order. Most of the time guests insist on paying.

And like your sister, many of my guests either bring a gift of leave me one.

Adelucas − That man is a keeper. He's helping you grow a spine and reducing your people pleasing.

I've been on both ends of the situation. I've had friends who live in London and visited many times.

I've been quiet as a mouse, made sure everything was clean and tidy, changed the bedding

if I was in the spare room or put the living room back if it was the couch, and bought a little thank you gift when I leave.

Oddly I was always welcome and even given a key so I could go out and not have to worry about their schedule.

When I got my own place I sometimes had friends ask to stay, and they were like me. A delight as a visitor and no trouble at all.

I never had to put my hand in my pocket for food as they paid for dinner and takeout, and they left no sign they had been when they left.

Great visitors like your sister make for a lovely time. People like your cousin don't.

As your BF says, there are plenty of hotels in the area, pick one. It's your home and safe space.

You get to choose who stays.

OrcEight − It sounds like the more you did for them, the less they respected you. I'm glad your fiance stepped in.

Do you think the woman should have explained her reasons more clearly, or was her fiancé right to keep things simple with a hotel list? How would you handle relatives who expect unlimited hospitality? Share your thoughts below!
