Pregnant Woman Discovers Her Family Planned a Surprise Reunion With Estranged Mother Behind Her Back

in Social Issues

For three years, one woman had accepted that her relationship with her mother was over.

It was painful, but it was a boundary she chose after her mother demanded she choose sides in a family conflict.

She didn’t cut contact out of anger. She tried to keep the peace, protect her marriage, and even reached out when she became pregnant.

But now, nine months pregnant with her second child, she discovered something that made her question whether she could trust another member of her family too.

A planned family visit almost turned into an unexpected confrontation, one she never agreed to and was never warned about.

'9 months pregnant; my family tried to a__ush me?'

I've been processing this for about 18 hours, and would appreciate insights.

5 years ago, my mother and my sister had a falling out. I told both of them

that I wanted to stay neutral. My sister respected this; my mother did not. 2

years later, when I got engaged, my mom gave me an ultimatum that either

I disinvite my sister to our wedding or she wouldn't come. When I made it

clear that I wouldn't be disinviting anyone, she severed all contact. That

was September of 2022.

I got pregnant a month later and sent an email to my mom to get her new

address so I could send her a pregnancy announcement; no response. No

text when my daughter was born, or for the first 2 years of her life. The

only thing I learned in that time was that my mom had been praying that

my husband would die/divorce me, because "he's not the man God has for me."

Fast forward to now: I'm 9 months pregnant and was supposed to spend

this past weekend with my husband and daughter at my grandmother's

house before the new baby comes and travel becomes hard. We ended up

not going because I thought I was going into labor (false alarm). Last night I

called my grandmother to apologize for canceling and to make future plans

to come down this weekend. While we were on the phone, I heard her say

to someone "you heading out? See you next week." I asked who she had

been talking to; she said it was my mom, who comes to visit on Sundays.

After we got off the phone, I got to thinking about it and realized there

was a non-insignifcant possibility that my mother would have shown up

while we were down visiting, had I not canceled. I called back to clarify

whether my mom was planning to be there when we were. Come to find

out: my mom DID know we would be there, because my grandmother told

her so. Never once did my grandmother tell me about my mom planning to

stop by, nor did she tell my mother that it may be best to skip a week. She

then proceeded to ask me "can't yall fix this rift between the 2 of you?" and

how my mom needs us in her life (remember: I haven't talked to my mother

in 3 years, because she wanted it this way.)

I got off the phone and my husband and I realized these 2 women had

ZERO problem springing an incredibly emotional encounter onto me, 9

MONTHS PREGNANT, without my prior knowledge, in the hopes they'd get

a favorable outcome. Clearly, I'm not going over there now, because I just

don't trust them. I just don't know how to move forward after baby gets here.

Edit for clarification: my mother is not my grandmother's daughter. She is

my grandmother's ex-DIL. My mother and my (deceased) father divorced in

2004. She still comes over because my adult sister (different sister than the

one previously mentioned) lives with my grandmother. Also, my

grandmother has shown zero signs of severe mental deterioration, such as

Alzheimer's or dementia. She actually did something very similar involving

my youngest sister and my dad about a decade ago. This is 100% her track record.

Family conflicts are complicated because they rarely involve only the two people who are fighting.

There is often a larger circle of relatives who want peace, but sometimes their desire for everyone to “just get along” can unintentionally dismiss the reasons the conflict happened in the first place.

For OP, this situation was not simply about an uncomfortable family reunion.

She had spent years respecting her mother’s decision to walk away while also refusing to abandon her sister to satisfy an ultimatum.

After being cut off during major life moments, her wedding, pregnancy, and the birth of her child, OP was suddenly placed in a position where an emotional confrontation could have happened without her consent, during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.

The emotional conflict here comes from competing ideas of what family loyalty means.

OP’s grandmother may believe she was creating an opportunity for healing, while OP experienced the situation as a violation of trust.

To one person, a surprise meeting might look like a bridge. To another, it can feel like an ambush.

A different perspective is that reconciliation cannot be meaningful when it is engineered by someone outside the conflict.

Real repair requires accountability, willingness, and respect for boundaries from the people involved.

A person who has been hurt may be open to rebuilding a relationship someday, but that choice belongs to them, not to relatives who are uncomfortable with the distance.

This perspective is important in OP’s situation because her decision to avoid the visit was not necessarily about refusing forgiveness forever.

It was about recognizing that trust had already been damaged.

When someone learns that relatives planned a major emotional encounter without informing them, especially after years of distance, it can reinforce the feeling that their needs and choices are not being respected.

The grandmother’s intentions may have been rooted in love or hope, but good intentions do not erase the impact of someone’s actions.

A reunion forced before both sides are ready can create more resentment rather than healing.

OP is also entering a major life transition with another baby arriving soon.

Protecting stability, emotional safety, and a peaceful environment for herself and her children is a reasonable priority.

Family connections can be valuable, but they should not require someone to repeatedly sacrifice their own sense of security.

Sometimes healing does not begin with bringing everyone into the same room.

It begins when each person accepts responsibility for their own choices and allows others the space to decide when or if they are ready to reconnect.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters condemned the grandmother’s actions

Mediocre-Victory-565 − That was incredibly insensitive of both of them, but

frankly I'd be more angry at your grandmother. You've come to expect

nothing from your mom, but you trusted your grandmother and she

basically betrayed you. If you do want to try and salvage your relationship

with grandmom, tell her your need time apart.

Have your baby, enjoy your family and get yourself healed physically and

emotionally. If/when you're ready you can offer to hear her side but make it

clear that she violated your boundaries and your trust. Unless she shows

genuine remorse and regret, I'd cut all ties.

You don't need deceitful people in your life and them being family doesn't

give them a free pass to disrespect and trick you. Good luck and I wish you health & happiness :)

Minflick − Why would Grandma expect OP to have a relationship with the

person who wished her HUSBAND dead? ! Nope, they can both be cut off for a while…

ExtremeJujoo − They both suck. Your mother wished death upon your

husband; that is pretty fucked up and beyond a mere rift. So yeah, to Hell

with her and shame on Grandma for conspiring with her to a__ush you

Correct_Wolf1593 − NTA. That wasn’t a “misunderstanding,” it was an

a__ush. Your mom cut you off, not the other way around, and now your

grandma tried to spring a reconciliation on you at 9 months pregnant?

That’s manipulative and unsafe. You have every right to protect your peace,

especially right before giving birth. Set firm boundaries — no surprise

visits, no “coincidences,” and no pressure.

If they can’t respect that, they don’t get access to you or the baby.

This group agreed OP should prioritize herself and the baby

Mother_Obligation_86 − I would talk with your grandmother. Let her know

you love and appreciate her. But remind her. ...you tried to fix things. Your

mom is the one who chose to go no contact. You

chose to be nutral but your mom chose her pride over you and lost both daughters because of it.

She never got to know her grand daughter because she chose to ignore

you. Let her know while you are looking to fix things right now is not the

time. You are about to give birth. and it just will be too much stress for you and the baby.

But tell her when you do wish to speak after you feel better YOU will be

the one to choose when this talk will happen as you gave the mom all the

chances already to choose. She dos not get to choose any more. You chose

peace, your mom chose silence. If she regrets it then that is guilt for her to baree. not you.

worry about yourself. you neeed all the rlaxing right now to get ready for

bringing your second into this world. Congrats mama, sending you noting but love!

PossibleDramaLlama − Nah. .. If mama wants to be in your life, she can

grow tf up and personally reach out. I'm just a stranger but you have my

support 100% on whatever you choose to do on this.

These commenters viewed the situation as a deliberate ambush rather than a misunderstanding

Jaded_Leg_46 − It's quite sneaky of your Mum to go down that route

because contacting you to rebuild your relationship would dent her pride

so you're then forced into a situation where you have no choice but to deal

with the woman who's pride caused the rift in the first place.

RainbowMisthios − Whether you're 9 months, 9 weeks, 9 days, or -9 days

pregnant, what your grandma did was vile. I'd go NC, but if you don't feel

comfortable doing so, I would pull a Dorothy from Golden Girls and

threaten to put grandma in a nursing home if she ever tries that again.

Also: just a guess, but I think I know why your sister had a falling out with

your mom. Although I am genuinely curious (and a nosey b__ch if I'm being honest 😅)

OP’s situation was never just about one surprise visit, it was about years of broken trust, unanswered attempts, and boundaries being ignored.

While some may believe her grandmother was trying to bring the family back together, others feel that reconciliation cannot happen through a hidden setup that takes away someone’s choice.

Should OP give her grandmother another chance after this betrayal, or was protecting her peace the right decision?
