Mom Refuses To Keep Buying Extra Period Products After Daughter Gives Them Away

Parenting often involves teaching children the balance between kindness and responsibility. Wanting to help others is a wonderful quality, but learning when and how to give is also an important lesson, especially when resources come from someone else’s hard work.

The original poster (OP) shared how her young daughter started her first period and was given everything she needed to feel prepared. However, OP later discovered that her daughter had been giving away large amounts of her feminine products to friends at school, leaving herself without enough supplies.

While OP admired her daughter’s generosity, she became frustrated after repeatedly replacing items that were meant for her daughter’s own needs. Now, OP is wondering if she was too harsh when setting boundaries or if she handled the situation appropriately. Scroll down to see what Reddit thought about this parenting dilemma.

A mother supports her daughter’s generosity, but must teach her that helping friends cannot leave her without essentials

'AITA for not buying my daughter extra feminine products?'

I know the title sounds bad but hear me out. I (32F) have 5 children. The age range is 12-5yo. I work 2 jobs, 1 full-time and the other part-time.

I do get a lot of help from family members with the children so that's always amazing.

With all my children, I have been talking to them about their body, what consent is, and what is appropriate and inappropriate touches/secrets.

So, when the oldest turned 9, I shifted the conversation with her to the way her body would start changing, the things she'd experience, etc.

When she was 10, she started complaining about cramps and pains in her stomach, so we talked about her cycle, what to expect

and I helped her pack a feminine care bag with pads, wipes, new panties, a baggy for the old panties,

and panty liners, that she could carry with her while she was on her cycle.

She didn't start until early this year just before her 12th birthday.

During this time, I went out and bought at least 12 months worth of care products for her because the kind she likes is not always in stock.

I kept them inside my closet, but showed her where they were when she needed them.

I also gave her a box to keep in her room so she wouldn't have to go back and forth everyday.

A box usually lasts 2 cycles, so 2 months.

It's been about 3 and a half months since then, and she came to me saying she needs more products because she's running low.

Thinking she meant the second box I gave her to keep in her room, I went inside my closet to grab another box for her.

To my SHOCK, she only had 2 boxes left. I'm sorry what?

I asked her what happen to all of her products. Low and behold, this child has become the pad dealing fairy at school.

She is a popular kid, so a lot of kids talk to or want to be around her. Some of her friends have also started their cycles around the same...

Because of this, she's been passing all her products out to them since then.

I told her there's nothing wrong with helping your friends when they are in a rough spot,

but she doesn't need to be giving all her products away or taking her products with her when she doesn't need them.

About a week after that, she came to me saying she needed more wipes because she was out.

I know that was impossible because 2 days prior I bought her a box of wipes.

I told her as much, and she said, "Well, my friend needed some wipes because she asked me for some."

I said, "So you gave her a full box of wipes?" She said, "Well, she needed them."

I explained to her AGAIN, not to hand out all of her products to her friends.

I said a bunch of things, but ended saying, "if she needs A WIPE, give her 1 for now and maybe 1 for later, the same with the pads.

It is NOT acceptable to give her a full box, because now, what are YOU going to use?" She said, "you can just buy me some more."

I feel I need to say, we are not struggling financially, but for me to continue to buy that many extra products,

WOULD put us in a bind eventually overtime as they are not cheap.

Anyway, at that point in the conversation I did become frustrated and raised my voice to her. I said, I am not their parent, I'm yours.

It is NOT my job to make sure they have feminine products, underwear or anything else.

If your friends are on their cycle, I'm SURE their parents know and their parents can do their job and buy their child what they need.

YOU and you ONLY are my responsibility. I will NOT keep buying extra products for you to just give them all away like money is easy to come by.

I work hard to make sure you have what you need and I will continue to do that because again, you are my child.

I will do what I have to do to make sure you have what you need. I will not have this conversation with you again.

Stop giving out all your products. If your friend needs 1 because they forgot, GIVE THEM 1 and 1 only.

You can even let them use your phone to call their parent and tell them to bring some to the school, but that's all the help you should be giving.

She didn't say much after that, but she looked deflated and it made me feel terrible.

Later that night, I acknowledged her giving heart and how that was a beautiful quality I loved in her and how much I was so proud of her for trying...

I also told her helping others should NOT put her in a situation where she's going without, and that's exactly what's happening.

It's okay to give, but not so much she doesn't have anything for herself.

We hugged and she went to bed. It's been a few days and I'm still thinking about it. Was I too harsh on her?

Should I buy 1 box specifically for her to give out, but tell her that after that box is gone she has to wait 4 months before I buy another...

How should I approach or readdress the situation?Should I just leave it where it is? AITA?

Raising children often means teaching two lessons at the same time: how to care about others and how to care for themselves. Those lessons can sometimes seem like they conflict, especially when a child’s kindness starts creating problems for their own needs.

In this story, the OP was not upset because her daughter wanted to help friends. In fact, she clearly admired that quality. The concern was that her daughter’s generosity had reached a point where she was giving away resources that were purchased specifically for her health and comfort.

OP had prepared her daughter carefully for puberty, made sure she had supplies available, and created a system so she would never feel unprepared. Discovering that months of products had disappeared because her daughter was supplying other students likely felt frustrating, especially because OP works hard to provide for five children.

A different perspective is that the daughter’s behavior actually shows a strong sense of empathy. At 12 years old, she noticed that her friends were uncomfortable or unprepared and wanted to solve the problem. She may not have fully understood the difference between helping someone temporarily and taking responsibility for something that belongs to their family.

Children often see immediate needs more clearly than long-term consequences. To her, a friend needing a pad was urgent. To her mother, the concern was making sure her own child had enough supplies.

Child development experts often explain that children need guidance in balancing compassion with self-care.

Psychologist Carol Dweck has discussed how children develop through feedback that helps them understand their choices rather than simply labeling behaviors as good or bad. Encouraging positive intentions while teaching better strategies helps children maintain kindness while building responsibility.

This is why OP’s follow-up conversation was probably the most important part of the situation. She did not only criticize her daughter.

She later acknowledged that her generosity was a beautiful trait and explained that helping others should not leave her without what she needs. That distinction matters. The lesson was not “stop caring about your friends.” The lesson was “you cannot pour from an empty cup.”

A separate box of supplies specifically for emergencies at school could be a reasonable compromise, but it should still come with limits.

The daughter can learn that being supportive does not mean becoming the person responsible for solving every friend’s problem. She can offer one or two items, help a friend contact their parent, or encourage them to speak with a trusted adult.

The bigger lesson is that kindness without boundaries can eventually become self-neglect. The daughter appears to have a caring heart, and that is something worth protecting. But part of growing up is learning that generosity works best when it comes from a place of stability, not when someone quietly sacrifices their own needs.

OP was not teaching her daughter to be less compassionate. She was teaching her that compassion includes herself too.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters supported setting boundaries and teaching the daughter that helping others has limits

Fancy_Avocado7497 − its important for girls to learn the word 'NO'. Its very valuable

LadyLoki1985 − Nta, while it's kind of her to help her friends, giving away all her products is not helping ,

almost sounds like they are taking advantage of her.

sassafrasthecat − NTA. Never set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm.

That’s a hard lesson all people pleasers have to learn. Good for you for setting boundaries right away.

These users suggested involving the school to address students’ access to menstrual products

ohnotheskyisfalling5 − It sounds like you handled this situation well.

Maybe you could talk to one or a few of her teachers about donating some boxes to the classroom?

She can bring them in and set them up. That way she knows she is helping, but you can limit it to a box a month or something.

liekkivalas − I don't think you did anything wrong in this situation, but I think there may be a broader issue of period poverty

(not being able to afford necessary products) at your daughter's school, if there are so many kids there asking her to share.

If you want to encourage your daughter to be charitable while not overly straining your family's resources, you could help her talk to the school

and see about setting up some kind of programme for kids who need menstrual products at school and don't have their own for whatever reason.

AdGroundbreaking4397 − Nta but I would address this with the school.

Clearly a lot of the girls arent getting their hygiene needs met at home.

They need to send a letter home reminding parents to ensure their kids have pads etc at home and at school

and that if they have an issue they can access period product through x resources.

I think in general it's a good idea to start including her in family budgeting, help her understand the value of money and the cost of items.

You could also give her a budget for personal items - pads, shampoos conditioner masks etc. She can start managing her own mini budget.

These Redditors highlighted concerns about people-pleasing and learning the value of money.

Gambit_Bedlam3137 − Here are my 2 cents, recovering codependent and people pleaser here. NTA but I'm seeing a red flag.

Your daughter sounds like she's trying to buy her popularity. This sounds like codependent/people pleasing behavior.

You are doing such a good job at raising your kids so they understand what's going on inside them (wish I'd had this)

and it seems like this is a new thing you may need to tackle.

I would turn my focus on making sure she was making friends in a healthy way. Good luck! You're a great mama!

Conscious_Bet_2005 − I would be more concerned with the Daughter’s response. “You can just buy me more”.

BiscuitsPo − I have an idea could you give her an allowance and if she wants to buy pads for her friends out of her allowance she can.

That will teach her real quick about mooching and being taken advantage of and sharing and what’s appropriate and what’s not.

Or maybe buy her some Dollar tree pads and wipes and those are the ones she can give to our friends.

This commenter shared a personal experience and encouraged checking whether classmates lack support at home

Naive-Stable-3581 − Some ppl have abusive parents who withhold period products as a tool of abuse. My mom did this to me.

I used school toilet paper wrapped into a pad, had accidents frequently, etc. super fun times. Ask if her friends have access to products.

Find out from your daughter what’s going on. Then get help accordingly.

Do you think the mother handled the situation fairly, or should she have created a separate supply budget for her daughter to share? How would you teach a child to stay kind without becoming overwhelmed? Share your thoughts below!
